This is Coke Studio Pakistan guys.. We have a number of these music session franchises now. There is Coke Studio, Nescafe Basement, Levi's Live, Battle of the Bands, In the Box, etc... Pakistan is not about bombs and guns, as it is mostly shown in the Western Media.. We love art, we spread love through various forms of art - music and theater being the major ones... "Nizam, not a god"
Ameer Khusru, an iconic figure in the cultural history of Indian sub-continent during 13-14th century, a sufi mystic, a musical genius, a scholar and a poet, was a spiritual disciple of famous sufi saint, Nizamuddin Auliya. The “Chaap Tilak” is an expression of love in praise of his beloved, spiritual mentor Nizamuddin, addressing him as 'Nizam' in the lyric. The poet has its own unique style of communication in popular country dialect. Owing to its simplicity and melody this piece of poetry has been graced by every legendary voice of sub-continent for centuries.

My life has never been the same since I discovered coke studio and sufi poetry (which is what is most often sung by coke studio singers), once you take a moment to understand the lyrics that are being sung, it shocks you that you have in your life never come across such outwards, and shocking expressions of love that are expressed in these songs. Music is just a gateway to a higher realm of higher emotions. Whatever is felt when we listen to this beautiful music cannot be explained.

This composition was created in undivided India in the centuries old hindustani classical music tradition (Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb) that amalgated two rich cultures (Sapt-sindhu and Persian) before vested interests fragmented our shared heritage along partisan lines. Those going on and on about who this amazing gem belongs to, please pay heed to the song's lyrics....'Chaap (the impression on a Muslim devotee's forehead when he bows before Allah in reverence) Tilak (the sacred mark applied on a Hindu devotee's forehead during prayers) sab bhooli (I have forgotten all those rituals) to se naina milaike (under your divine gaze My beloved Lord).

Rahat and Abida are legendary Pakistani artists, Rahat is nephew of Nusrat who is known as one of the greatest vocalist of all time, Jeff Buckley used to do his covers as well and called him his Elvis. What Nusrat was for male singing Abida is same for female singing for classic music, she can make you emotional in a second and best Sufi singer in the world alive right now. Coke Studio has alot of performances of this style and obviously this one stands out, it is a show started in Pakistan and later adopted by multiple countries like with brand Coke Studio India, Africa, Philippines, Arabic and some other. It focuses a lot on Poetry along with Vocals and other musicians that is why they are usually longer in length and sometimes blend of two songs. Usually its called Sufi and Qawali singing, people around the world come to Pakistan to listen to it as it is home to great musical families who have been singing and practicing it for generations.
P.S: You are welcome to come to Pakistan and listen to it live.

Saw the various reaction videos to this. I think you are the only ones who realize just how much gets done in a single breath in classical singing. Another video spoke of them sitting singing and hunched somewhat which is a no-no in Western music and said to show this video the next time someone made a fuss over it. But that is not it either. Breath is used in such a rationed way in classical music that sitting probably helps reduce the velocity that is used to make the "big sound" in Western (and thus the more linear force it gets, the more the sound). Basically all the tutorials showing how to sing with an open voice, etc involving loud singing/shouting would get thrown straight out of the window (along with falsetto - also frowned on) when learning Indian classical. As much air as necessary to create the sound. More force than that is inefficient technique and wastes breath reducing what you can do with it if it adds nothing and force that takes away melodiousness is frowned on (distortions like screams etc would get a "nope" lol).
Indian/Pakistani classical generally frowns on "shouting" and the mark of experience is to use skill to create big resonant sounds while not using more vocal force than necessary, so to say. Almost every song demonstrating excellent mastery over Indian classical musical vocals will have moments that have these lengthy melodies using continuous voice with demonstrably few opportunities to breathe. It is a mark of the mastery they have over vocals that they can produce such huge rich intricate sounds for so long per breath. You train for years, decades, lifetime and do more and more with a single breath (I haven't, it is just learning to appreciate the music also makes you aware of these things. lol)

It is not a hate comment and there are many talented singers in india but just give me one song that is in same qawali style from any indian composer(not copied). We are the only ones who preserved the real form of sufism qawali.
It may be originated in india, but we own it now completely.

    • @chats-bug
      @chats-bug 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@HammasAli I didn't mean India when I said 'land', I meant the subcontinent undivided. Sure you guys kept the qawali style alive and kudos to you for that. We did the same for other classical forms here. It's just that the two lands took two children of the parent style to preserve, and that's not a bad thing I guess. I pointed out that you neither the current Pakistan nor India 'owns' any form of the music themselves, the people from both the lands, Burma, Sri Lanka and Tibet share them alike.
      Peace.

A love song for God needs no interpretation, you will feel your spirit dancing in joy as the portal between heaven and earth opens, allowing your spirit to connect to The Creator. This is how you call the Creator to us. No love song for a human can erect such emotions.

    Dear David and Matthew,
I very much enjoy the both of you enjoying music and musicians from around the world! I love your commentaries and nuanced insights into the vocalist, the accompanying musicians and the genre of music. I see with interest that you have discovered musicians from the Indian sub-continent. There are two iterations of Coke Studio, the original version from Pakistan and the Indian version Coke Studio India. Coke Studio show cases some of the best sufi music and musicians. Ustad (Maestro) Rahat Ali Khan and Begum Abida Parveen are musical icons in the subcontinent. They are masters of their craft as you have heard in this sufi song that you have featured. Sufi music is devotional music - with poems (Ghazals) written in Urdu (a language spoken in India/Pakistan that is a mixture of Hindi, Persian and Arabic; used to be the lingua franca of the Mughal court) and sung in the Qawwali style. The poetry is eclectic and brilliant. I would like you to read about sufi music (so that you can understand the passion in the singers/the mood/vibe etc.). Also, I would like to recommend the following artist for you to analyze- Javed Bashir. The music videos have subtitles for you to understand the poetry and meaning of the songs.
    (58) Coke Studio Season 10| Naina Moray| Javed Bashir & Akbar Ali feat. Aamir Zaki - TH-cam
    (58) Coke Studio Season 9| Man Kunto Maula| Javed Bashir & Ali Azmat - TH-cam
I like him and think that he is brilliant. I am interested to see what you think of him. Keep enjoying music and posting videos.
    Girish
