    The suggestion that the Salem Witch Trials were related to ergot poisoning was made popular by Linnda Caporael (who was an undergrad student with no scholarship into phycology or New England history) in the April, 1976 edition of Science magazine. And it wasn't the witches that were supposed to have been effected in this theory, but the victims. It was debunked almost immediately; as ergot poisoning effects everyone eating it but only 1 or 2 members of any household were ever effected and the symptoms didn't even resemble ergotism. The theory largely gained popularity at the time because of people's fascination with fear-mongering of LSD.
    It's weird that almost 50 years later people would still be repeating a theory that was discredited within weeks. Shortly after the appearance of this article, Nicholas Spanos and Jack Gottieb published a full review of the theory also in Science magazine. In their response, Spanos and Gottieb firmly concluded:
    “The available evidence does not support the hypothesis that ergot poisoning played a role in the Salem crisis. The general features of the crisis did not resemble an ergotism epidemic. The symptoms of the afflicted girls and of the other witnesses were not those of convulsive ergotism. And the abrupt ending of the crisis, and the remorse and second thoughts of those who judged and testified against the accused, can be explained without recourse to the ergotism hypothesis” (Nicholas Spanos & Jack Gottieb, 1394).
    Three of my family were put on trial in Salem in 1692 and two of them put to death including my 11th great-grandmother Mary Towne Eastey and her sister Rebecca Nurse. Many people later admitted that they made up their testimonies either through coercion or just for fun. For example, the testimony of Daniel Elliott in favor of Elizabeth Proctor describes a March incident where an afflicted witness claimed to see a specter but admitted “she did it for sport, they must have some sport.” (Bernard Rosenthal, 537) Before she was executed my great-grandmother wrote an impassioned plea for reason and better education that's still needed today.

      I've spent a lot of time around people who were very high on various substances (sometimes I was high with them, sometimes I was the sober one) and in my experience, people who are stoned/ripped/twisted out of this world do not display the consistent behavior of the witch trials. I can't claim expertise on the trials themselves, but it does seem that their accusations and "testing" methods were too repetitive for a whole town of people who were suffering drug-induced hallucinations and delusions.
      I think mass hysteria is just a polite way of saying "idiots doing idiot things because they're idiots."
      In some cases, you could substitute "bigots" for "idiots" and it would work just as well.

  • @Gongulez
    @Gongulez หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Nice video
    But i gotta correct you at 7:50
    You said that long term use of psychedelics can “damage” structures as in damaging the brain, that is false.
    Long term psychedelics use will change neuro chemistry as will anything in life if done long term.
    Psychedelics wont damage your brain like you’ve stated.
    If you want help regarding the nature of psychoactive substances let me know! I study their chemistry and impact on society and now more than ever we need to spread awareness and not misinformation!
    Ps: Skooma is probably opium.

    • @warmb33f
      @warmb33f  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I appreciate your comment and I am well versed on the topic as well. I understand and have learned about the potential applications about psychedelics especially in their ability to help with treatment resistant depression in end of life care. According to multiple studies published in nature and other peer reviewed sources (I'll post their titles below...) long term psychedelic use has been associated with structural changes in the brain and cognitive changes as well. I think it's important to be mindful of these types of studies even if one is supportive of therapeutic psychedelic use as psychedelics are still emerging drugs in medicine and we do NOT have enough long term scientific data on their use.
      Studies: Developmental changes in brain structure and function following exposure to oral LSD during adolescence
      Long-term use of psychedelic drugs is associated with differences in brain structure and personality in humans

    • @Gongulez
      @Gongulez หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@warmb33fthanks for answering and please forgive me for my English.
      My attempt was to clarify that those changes aren’t malignant like I’ve felt they were portrayed by you.
      Furthermore i have to disagree with you again, many psychadelic tryptamines have been used in traditional medicine for millennia.
      MDMA (even tho not a “true” psychedelic) actually is one of the most researched molecules in modern medicine.
      I’m sorry for criticising so much, you made a great vid and there’s a need for fictional drug analysis in a real pharmacological way, but unfortunately this topic attracts a lot of pro/contra biases.
