I want to start with a statement: the #Etron RS GT is in a lot of ways, probably the best car the Audi Sport currently makes. I wasn’t expecting it, but I’ve been left more impressed than something like the RS6 which I personally felt was highly overrated.
Built at Audi’s Böllinger Höfe facility in Neckarsulm, the same place the built the R8 #supercar, #Audi says that the Etron GT is the brand’s new flagship car. Of course the E Tron is based on the same platform as the Taycan, which is the J1 EV platform, with much of the internal structure shared, but Audi are positioning this as more of a GT.
Today we will focus on this top dog RS version, and I’ll tear the skin of and show you every little detail before we launch control and drive Iron Man’s last car in anger.
The E Tron sits on a 800V architecture and shared underpinnings with Taycan, to an actually fairly significant degree.
So just like the Porsche, we have an 85KW battery with 33 modules laid at the bottom of the car, affixed around foot garages to give room for our legs, but still allow for that sleek look synonymous with this platform. The RS features two electric motors, both permanently excited motors or PSMs. Our rear axle also has the two speed transmission, the first gear for your acceleration, and the second for efficiency or providing more power later.
Of course, it’s a Quattro, and in the RS’ more dynamic modes the power is more rear bias as you’d expect. Suspension is where things diverge: Audi taking the route of a more supple GT car even in the RS version. The adaptive suspension standard in our RS is a three camber air suspension, with variable height of three stages, and adapts alongside the dampers depending on driving mode and style. Finally, we have Rear wheel steering up to 2.8 degrees too.
The base GT Quattro model gets 469bhp and a 0-60 time of 4.1secs, but our RS Etron GT is a beast. BHP starts at 590, launch boost giving 637.. Torque: 830NM. And a 0-60 of 3.3 that we test at 3.1!! Range could be better at 280 miles.
As far as exterior and interior design, this is my favourite EV in terms of aesthetics. Audi with all their etron product have kept things familiar to combustion cars but with still a very aerodynamic value of 0.24cd. Much more on this in the video.
But will it be able to stand out vs Taycan? And will it suffer from the same foibles that haunt the current RS line up? Today we explore:
    - E-Tron and Taycan shared J1 platform
    - Batteries
    - Motors and transmission
    - Quattro and diff
    - Adaptive Suspension
    - Performance figures
    - RS6 ETron GT estate?
    - Exterior design review
    - Interior review
    - RS E Tron Launch control

So true about the Audi Wheel design, tbh they've not always been great. The newer RS4 and RS6 especially have had the best designs but previously it was very limited and mostly swapped for aftermarket ones

I agree but it is a dam shame that for the price your paying the range is awful. It is like they have put more money into the tech and the look. Why is it that Tesla can make a 1050bhp car the Plaid that looks quite nice and is stupidly quick yet has a better range than both the Audi and the Porsche? Don't get it these are multi billion dollar companies that should have an amazing R&D department. They made the Bugatti Veryon god dam it

I was looking at the Taycan XT 4S. When I sat in it I was shocked how small it was considering the huge exterior. It's no bigger than an Audi A3 (with the exception of an extra 200 litres of boot space). The new RS3 is just as quick (if not a little bit quicker) and came in about £47K cheaper in a similar spec.
Then add 12453 to the equation...it's Audi RS3 all the way!! 👍🏻😎❤

Audi are very much in line with what my retiree uncle wanted for the Cross Turismo, a modern 911 interior in an ev. Couldn't get it regardless of the cost though, just wouldn't so he ended up getting the last gen rs6 until as he put it "people wake up to screens not expressing quality or style".

Superb video Raz. So informative. So detailed as to what was it is and is not a Taycan. WELL DONE! Learned a ton. As to the car, it is superb too - though I sure get it that if one wants even harder core than the RS, that a Taycan has that extra sharp edginess. Personally, a nice yet highly capable GT is what I am leaning toward.

  • @peterpage7322
    @peterpage7322 ปีที่แล้ว

Fantastic review, in fact the best and most informative I have seen to date. I am actually part exchanging my Tesla model 3 long range for this and picking it up in two days. The Tesla screen has caught me out too many times because it is too fiddly to make the usual adjustments that one does. Also the interior is showing signs of wear after just 6 months. The Audi on the other hand is in another league entirely but of course more expensive. The Tesla has good range…..if you drive it sensibly and turn of a/c or heating. I think that the Audi if driven the same way would also give a better range of over 300miles. The problem is……can one have enough self control to accomplish this? This Audi is the best ev I have driven to date without question and the best looking.

“Large Screens are a fad” - Totally Agree and as you say, very very dangerous distraction (I was recently driven into by someone who was fiddling with his touchscreen and not paying attention to the road)! Also nothing will date these cars faster than their screens and infotainment. A ray of hope for this car is that it drives well and isn’t plastered with iPads like the majority of BEVs.

I agree about the touch screens, particularly the lower climate control touchscreen in the Audi’s. When I first saw the interior of this e-Tron with the buttons, I was disappointed it didn’t match the clean lines of their other interiors but having lived with the RS6 for 12 months, the lower screen is pretty dangerous while driving. It takes your eye off the road far too much as you try & figure out which bit your supposed to be swiping or touching. Even the haptic feedback doesn’t help because you still have to glance down to make sure your fingers are in the right place for the function you want to adjust.

OMG! Analogue controls? The idea Audi isn't going all in on the digital dashboard makes me very happy. I cant stand my fathers sq7 and the glossy touchscreens where everything looks the same. I was beginning to think my ttrs was one of the last cars they made with simple intuitive controls.
I love the interior...designer was able to make the dashboard look great even with no less than 4 different materials. I think most interiors looks confused, like too many people had a hand in it. It needs a knob in the middle to control the infotainment so you're not hunting for touchscreen buttons

  • @Mockle07

As someone who is very detail/history orientated, and someone that does often engage with their commenters, I’m hoping you can answer this one for me. When did PR people, journalists etc. stop saying “the” before a care name? It has been a few years now, but why? Why do people say, for example, “So what we have done with R8 this time” rather than “So what we have done with THE R8”.
Now I’m not losing any sleep over it, it just irritates the hell out of me as it sounds like some marketing guff that came from Apple or something similar that everyone has now adopted. Please help me understand!
Totally agree btw - the E Tron GT is, by some margin, my favourite production EV looks-wise. It just looks like a well-sculpted ‘normal’ car, rather than one where the designers have said “Right, it’s an EV so we must make it look DIFFERENT”, which mostly ends up with some contrived styling cues.

I think the Cross Turismo looks better. I also like the way the EQS looks because the lowest drag coefficient is beautiful in itself. This one looks great too but the wheels look silly and the bonnet is a little too common.

Great looking car, when the move to full evs is upon us all I hope they sort the bl**dy alloys out. Agree 100% with the review, the only negative is the wheels. Great video thanks

This does paint a good picture of the future, but it's concerning to think that all the differences between this and the Taycan are basically managed by software. With the advent of expensive electrification killing small brands and development, how long will it be before every car is at heart the same electronic skateboard?

It's my favorite car I've owned. There are two "P" buttons that look nearly identical. The one located in the gear selector is park. The one further forward a few inches is the park assist.

True that, infotainment screens defo dangerous as they take seconds away from your attentioon to the road where as before you could direct choices from ur steering wheel whilst looking at the road....

Interesting. New M3 (Joe Achilles) is fractionally faster running the 0-60mph.

The RS e tron is one serious car on performance and it goes against the likes of the it's high performing petrol sibling, the R8

Your reviews are SUPER (and fun). Just watched this and your BMW ix50 review. We (still!!!) drive our 2005 (!!!) BMW 325ci (6-speed) "sonora bronze" (dark champagne-coloured) coupe, maintained to the max, totally babied, clayed and waxed forever . . . with only 68,000 miles on it. So, A QUESTION: Do you possibly see BMW coming out with a BMW 2 or 3 coupe EV? For, THAT is the only thing that would ever drag us (kicking and screaming) into the 21st century. Perhaps that "fleet-wide" EV modular chassis BMW has developed, applied to such a format? Meanwhile, our "ancient" 325's very peppy yet thrifty UN-aspirated 6, manual shift and hydraulic steering still are our "Gold Standard." Any ideas? (We're both scarily alive mid-70s car nuts!). Thanks for replying.

Fantastic review as always, but I think you're wrong about minimalism in car interior design being a fad.
