Failing at Un Hemi Swapping My 1970 Dodge Challenger Part 2

- I’m on a mission to complete the Un-Hemi swap of my 1970 Dodge Challenger Vanishing Point Clone car. I didn’t have anything against the Gen 3 5.7 hemi engine, but I knew it never was a big block, and the Vanishing point car truly deserves to get back to its roots.
In this video I weigh my options and try for the best! But Fail and fail big time!
The 440 is screaming, "PICK ME!"
😅
You may be on to something!
@JustMoparJoe I think I heard Sam Kinison screaming in the background! "440 Source, crank, rods, pistons! Stroker kits at great prices! Oh! Oh!"
440 Engine, Performance, Dependability and Reliability.
Not to mention the Sound.
440 and a 4 speed.
Just sounds cool!
Mopars to The Front!
Thanks Ed! Just landed
THIS!!!!
That awesome car needs the 440 Joe !
You may be right!!!
I’m going to pile right in with the other guys. 440. Something about a worked 440 and 500+ hp and 500+ft.lb. Of torque ripping asphalt and that roar! Kowalski would be proud. One man’s opinion. Your choice brother!
Thanks brother!
Well i guess the 440 is looking for a new home. Which ever way you go it will be awesome. Keep up the good work Joe.
We shall see! Maybe I can build both!
SNOWBALLED!!! We all know how the quick and easy builds go
Never ever what you expect
Joe!!!
This is a car of a life time. It should be in the hands of only some.
It's DNA refrence is: 440.
Since you have so much going on I say take your time and build a master class 440 driver and keep us updated as you go along.
Take care,
Phil
@@philreed3748 thanks brother! I believe you hit it on the head when you said, “I’ve got so much going on”! I’m only showing half of it all on the channel right now. But I definitely am morning a solid plan for this one
Joe you gotta do the 440 but either way I’m sure it will be awesome
I think you may be right! Thanks brother
Like a snowball rolling downhill
Looks like another easy project 😂 great job, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
Thanks Donald! Same to you!
You gotta do the 440. White ‘70 Challengers are SUPPOSED to have 440’s in them. It’s the law.
I fought the law and the …
Old school big block.=happiness😂
Absolutely!
As a fellow White 70 Challenger owner. I say 440 all the way. I just built a 440-6 for my 70 GTX. A 484 purple shaft cam. 10:1 pistons and aluminum heads. I don’t remember the cost. But it wasn’t too awful. Car fires right up and idles really good. No mufflers yet because I am doing body work. But a healthy 440 would just go together with that 70 Challenger. You have to get pistons. So 10:1 would work real well for the street.😉. But I know you Joe. You will put together a real nice package for the street. If there one thing you do well it’s putting together a big block Mopar. Waiting in anticipation for your next move.
I appreciate that! I won’t overbuild it, but I want it to be meet my needs. It will get a good flat tappet cam and some nice machining. I’ll try to hide some horsepower along the way!
Yep option 2 😃 👍 👍 👍 👍
Sounds good to me! Thanks brother
Use the "541Stroker kit" from 440 Source and demonstrate for us how to set up an external oiling system for said swap since you already need a rotating assembly
That would be excellent. I am waiting until winter time to pull my 512 and do the external oiling with Rick Seeman.
Well, whichever direction you go with it, we know it'll be awesome!
Thanks Big/-Medium Mike!
I have the 360 magnum in mine. You can't go wrong with that 400 or the 440!
Thanks Todd!
Old school muscle car has to have the old school 440 power. 👍
Yes sir! The classic!
Uncle Tony is a know it all and kinda a smart ass
Haha!
Uncle Tony is old school. To the point and speaks mopar .
@@kevinpatrick8788 he had made great success on TH-cam. I look forward to racing him someday.
I'd have to go all out Kowalski on it with the 440, a 833 4 speed with pistol grip shifter and R/T badging ! It would be a must for me!😊👍
It’s telling my soul! Or Super Soul..
@@JustMoparJoe🤣👍
Yeah, make it a Max Wedge 440 Joe, just look for Long Ram ♈ manifolds.😊
Haha! I know where some are, but ll keep it in the 70 style
I'd go with the 440 Joe. I was just at Chryslers at Carlisle. I met Nick from Nick's garage and was checking out his Kowalski Challenger really cool car. just my opinion
Thanks brother. Nicks car is nice! I’d love to race him in this one someday!
I like the 400 idea. Bore and put in deck height pistons. Love that bb sound. Historically the 400 doesn't get much love. Nice to see one get a good home or is that a good hone? WAH,Wah,wah.
Haha! I see what you did there!
The 360 Magnum china gap intske for 130 and then you already have a nice reground cam for it. Set of cheap trickflow 16982 springs and have a nice 350+ hp 360
@@aaronbarnes8938 the magnum man!
My question is simple. What’s your dream for the car? All at once or in steps or baby steps. Do what your heart tells you! If you got the knowledge use it. You got the cash spend it. You got the time use it. If any of these things don’t equal the others don’t do it. Wait.
Thanks Stan!
Can't go wrong with a RB motor...thanks Joe..🔧🔧👍
You got that right! I love my low decks in A videos
That Challenger need a big block , a Stroker in a 383 block , a 496 o the 440 you have , the good old days , a B body Is mandatory a BIG BLOCK. Amd this E body too , the cudas with a 340 look " funny" , but in mid 70's with the W2 heads , a lot of E bodys run a very hots 340 wih W2 , cheaper 371 strokers with W2, heads ,a solid cam and you are the King of the " stop lights" 🍻
Sounds great!
Decisions, decisions! 😁
Only good ones!
I've passed through loads of engines and heads and intakes and have never once had a set of heads where the guides weren't thrashed, sunk valves, or some such issue. For example Im sitting on a 383 that ended up munching an intake lobe early on its rebuild... it was promised as a running drop-in ready long block. (I learned my lesson early, before I agree on a purchase anymore I pull the pan and a few caps) If you are sitting on some factory flat top 20+ pistons you could get away with some hone work and a set of rings?
Imho 440 all the way! Like you said, a VP car is meant to have one :)
I like the way you think!
Seems like everybody likes the 440,count me in. Have 2 in my boat. Unlimited power.😂
That’s awesome!
You forgot to show us your secret boosted slant six😢
I’ve got a couple..
Dart Sport!!
May need to go down the road!
Build the 400. Fresh bore and zero deck pistons and you have a strong engine.
I love the 400, but I have a special idea for it!
I just got a 440 but havent crunk it yet. Suposed to be a good one but its the last year they was made. The detuned version.
That’s great. I really don’t think they made a bad year of 440’s. I know production tolerances and forms could be worn out. Good luck with yours!
@@JustMoparJoe thanks. I appreciate what you do. Makes me wanta romp the throttle on a ripper with side pipes. Lol
Seems like the good Lord’s saying that 440 was meant to be. Hopefully that engine works out good.
Yes sir!
Got some big decisions to make these are world changes events lol you could always put the 440 crank into the 400
That’d be a good mix! Nothing but time and money!
I would/could be happy with the magnum, but you wouldn't be happy till it has a BB in it! So BB it is!
Thanks Tim! I always think of you as the magnum man now!
Need to give that 440 block to me lol
Haha! I can find you one if you need it lol
440!
That’s a great idea!
Call Rick Seeman ang put one of his Hemi's in it! 🤠
Haha! He wants me to get my own financing for one of those bad boys
@@JustMoparJoe yea, but big money means big fun, right?😁
@@parrishpatterson6780 😂 it’s true
Go with 440. Stroke the 400 for the Dart!
The 400 will be stroked for someone! Stay tuned 🫡
Hey Joe,
Tim here, i'll say again, 440!!!....no ifs, ands, or buts!!!.....440!!!......that older block probably has better nickel in it......i know its expensive and all.....my initial comment was "440"......get r done!!!.......haha...PEACE my brother
Yes sir 🫡
@@JustMoparJoe 👍
451! 451! Let’s build a 451!
I know it’d be fun! I’d bet money that low deck turns in to a stroker if it hangs around long enough 🫡
@@JustMoparJoe I’ve read the 451 is the perfect stroker size. Can you imagine it with a set of Trick Flow heads! Let Ed work everything over and it would be scary fast!
@@brucesherrill4116 they’ve bene built for decades and well liked because guys could make them before they had stroker kits and cranks. With new stroker kits, they make lighter rods, lighter crank, and better designs. But the 513 kit costs exactly the same as a 451
😎
Thanks brother
If the 440 is already built, I'd run it. Then maybe build a 400 that's not stroked, that can scream for something else.
All good ideas buddy!
Im not sure which wat your going to go either one would be a good choice. I do know it will be right when you do it. Joe doesn't do junk.
Thanks brother!
lol!!!!!! You know how it goes. You want to do it right. Pull that 440 out and start over or you will never be happy with it.
@@richardmoerke9329 I know. I had a sweet 340 auto black challenger. But it wasn’t a 4 speed. And it wasn’t a 440!
🤙
Thanks brother
Not sure if I get a vote, but I'd vote 440!!!!
Absolutely do! Thanks buddy!
40 or 60 thou over build and deck the block 🤔. How long is a piece of string Joe . You could always build a slant with a Turbo 🙀😀🤣. Na she big block or nothing . What about a good old 340 have you got any lying around 🤔.
Thanks brother. No 340’s for me around. I do have 4 360’s now to do something with 😂
Did you say the 400 cylinders were at .020 over already? If so, think I remember hearing that the 74' and up 400's can only be bored out .020 over. Please correct me if I'm wrong though, it's been 23+ years since I've built myself a Hot Rod.😢
The 400 is still standard. It will clean at .030 for sure. I’ve never seen one that wouldn’t go .030. My 512 is .035” over and my 406 is .030
@@JustMoparJoe Ok gotcha. Thanks.
Huh the 400 she worn out.
It does have a lot of wear
440 , I’m way old so a 440 challenger would do a Vanishing point car right
Yes sir. It’s on the roster!
5.9l needs a reground cam or itll be a dog
Yes sir. I have one! But it’ll have to be for a different project
You will fix the 440 or snag something else . 413 426 you know what I mean .
Absolutely! I have 3 413 blocks laying around.
Why did you sell the hemi ? A stroked out 340 would be cool but you dont have one.
It’s true. 340’s are great! But big blocks have to win out here
Ok then by the same logic you must put a 440 in there because its a 70 and that's what they came with. They never put a 400 in a challenger @@JustMoparJoe
@@tonyb3864 I agree!
440
Yes sir
The car says only the 440 is proper.
It’s true!
400 dog chow motor or a 440 so why is this even a question. Vanishing point challenger says son do me right.
@@Roosters_Restos haha! I have been known to make 400’s great again! It’s hard to beat a 440
@JustMoparJoe I know that and it's a proven fact but it's not correct for a 70 challenger so if your going to fix that fix it right and that's my point. So you have a block so build it.
@@Roosters_Restos I’ve got a lot of goodies I’ve been saving up
