I was shocked to hear you paid €100 a night for accommodation. I have stayed in many Greek Islands, including twice in Milos and have never paid even half of that. I usually find a nice clean studio for 20 to 40 a night and have never been disappointed. I have travelled to Greece over the years in every month from May to October. Even in Santorini there are many reasonably priced places to stay, for example, at Perissa and very reasonably priced restaurants away from the caldera views.

You can pay €50/night and even less in some places. She had a fancy place with a private overlook balcony with jakuzzi, and visited the 3 most expensive islands in Greece, Santorini has millions of tourists competing for a room, and Mykonos is meant for high end tourism. It's like going to [private club galore, rich people ski resort town] Gstaad (like Aspen, for the Americans) and complaining that "Europe is expensive"). There are 100+ cheaper islands (as or more good), plus countless beaches in mainland Greece coasts... It's also "peak tourist season". May to July and September are just as good weather wise (if not better, for people who could do without places being overcrowded and 40+ degrees celcius/104+ degrees Farenheit) and have even cheaper prices...

It's just as cheap or as expensive as you want. I go every year twice to Greece and every time for 6-7 weeks. The best (and often the cheapest) islands are the ones without an airport where charter planes full of tourists can land.

As long there are customers willing to pay 100 euros a day for a room
(you chose a room with private pool and in the island it doesnt really matter how far you are from the center of the island)
the owners will price it 100 euros a day. You chose to travel with speed ferries and it was your choice to pay 25- 30% more for that, also the price are up
not cause of the pandemic but because of the war and the extreme prices of the gas. There are 100 more Greek islands that are half the price of what you spent in LUXURY places you chose.
Everything is your choice . You can go to a restaurant and have a 10 euro Mousaka or a 100 euro Lobster. Both very tasty(Mousakas is better) but is up to you to decide what you will have
.Finally you have to understand that the islands nowadays all mostly for tourist. We as Greeks if we are lucky enough to have a job we get paid 500-600-700 euros a month so Santorini, Mykonos
Paros etc are way out of our budget. Pls enjoy the Greece that we cant.

It’s definitely fun to mix up budget accommodation with something more expensive. I did that in Sicily (I used 4 different types of accommodation, 3 pretty cheap and 1 expensive) the funny thing was I expected to like the most expensive place best and it turned out I liked the cheapest best of all! It was 30 Euro per night. It’s nice when you get surprised like that!

It’s possible to travel off season (in October for example) for quite cheaply. Find street food and buy at grocery stores (depends but cheaper than €15-€20 per meal), book longer ferries or flights (a flight might be cheaper in advance) for $20-$50, stay in small hotels or hostels for $15-$40 a night, and take public transit.
Even beautiful hotel rooms with views off season will be much cheaper than more expensive but similar destination. Although afaik Turkey or Georgia are both cheaper.

We’re quite similar (I also combine more ‘expensive’ - as a solo traveler - lodging with hostels and travel mostly on my own). I would really like to visit Greece, but it does suck (as I read in the comments) that with these prices it’s becoming unattainable for Greek people :(

One country where the prices surprised me was Romania, having lived in Poland for the last two years. And the quality of service was lower. I encountered restaurants that had only alcoholic drinks on offer and refused to serve water (but I could take the empty glass to the washroom and fill it myself in the washroom sink), a 20 euro hotel infested with cockroaches, and worst of all, an intercity bus line (costing 22 euro) at the last minute rebooking me on the 1:00 P.M. departure because they didn't sell enough tickets for the 10:30 A.M. departure. At least the museums were cheap.

  • @Ptolemy336VV
    @Ptolemy336VV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Greece is very much a affordable nation so I for the most disagree a bit with your video. I have been there 50 times, so I know what Im talkin about. You paid 100 euro's per night? That is just funny. I have hardly ever paid more than 65 euro and the vast bulk of it was 40-50 euro per night for incredible and wonderful stays. So, you spending 100 euro's per night in Milos is your choice. And don't try to say it is a better accomodation for 100 euro's for an argument, because that is nonsense from the accomodations I am seeing in your video. It all depends on how you look.
For example. I just came from Jordan. Wadi rum is a lovely place. The tour in Wadi rum alone will cost 300-500 euro excluding everything else. But I managed to have a great place, the whole tour, breakfast, lunch and dinner included, for 4 people in total for 180 euro's. I arranged everything, and my friends where very surprised of how cheap it was. Basically the same quality for a much better price. I can also spend 5 times more. But I look a little bit better and find great options usually for great prices.
Also. I haven't been to Mykonos, but I have been to Santorini 4 times. I don't need to be at the literal caldera, but very close to it, I spend 40-50 euro's per night. Why? Because I am a person that doesn't have to be sitting all day at the hotel. In Santorini the very best thing to ever do is go around the caldera and island. Have a walk from Oia to Fira or other way around and see the sunset, sunrise and so on. And for that you need to be outside and not in your hotel. So Santorini can absolutely be affordable.
Yes. summer season is more expensive. Fully agree. and also this year everything in the whole world became atleast 10% more expensive.
I rent cars for 2 weeks in all my stays in Greece. ALL my stays. I spend between 250-500 euro's for 14-18 days in Greece with full insurance and a good car. That is not expensive whatsoever. In low season I can get it for around 250-300 euro's for 2 weeks. So those are my transportation costs.
I will not lie for the fact that unfortunately Greece, like every country is more expensive than before. And that means that countries that where already very expensive are going to be impossibly expensive slowly. And Greece becomes slightly less affordable on it's status of being a very affordable nation. But if Greece is becoming slight less affordable, I don't even want to know how it is going to be in Italy and other nations.
I agree with your food prices. I pay generally for 2 people between 25-40 euro in total. So your prices of 15 euro for 1 person would match my expenditure options.
But the costs of sleeping options and transport is something we differ on.
By the way I am from the Netherlands. My milk costs me 1.50 euro now. some years ago it was 1 euro. Netherlands everything is expensive. Im happy I have a good salary. Or else I would call myself poor.

I think it depends where you're from (different countries have different sallaries) and which areas you're visiting (eg Mykonos and Santorini are expensive even for Greeks), and also what options you make (how much expensive the hotel is etc).
I think sadly Greece is expensive for Greeks, but for people with a normal salary from abroad it's not too bad.
Greek sallary is super low compared to abroad, like 600-700 euros per month.

Prices are similar to any other European country because of the taxation. But Greece has services. it cannot be compared to Asian or African countries. In case of an accident, there are first aid centers in every island and a fleet of medical helicopters for a quick transfer to a large hospitals in Athens. Motorway network for road safety, high speed railway, fast catamaran and modern ships, coach and buses network, airport services and heliports in even the most remoted island. That's why we receive 30 million tourists per year, that's 3 times our population.

It's very interesting with the sunbeds prices in Greece. The most expensive I have seen for a regular sun bed at a top beach is 40 euros, so when you said 120 euro for a bed, my jaw dropped. And it doesn't include anything! So does it include two beds for 120? Everywhere I went as a solo traveller It was a fixed price for 2 beds mostly. The best I've seen in Rhodos was in Kalithea Springs, you got a nice luxury bed for 10 Euro with 1 soda and 1 big bottle of water included, delivered to you with ice bucket. I would do sunbeds every now and then, mostly spending 5 euros, but also just lay on my towel for free. It's not ok to have prices that the locals can't afford, ethiqual questions comes to mind when travelling.

    • @foljs5858

The prices of ferries have gone up a lot, hopefully they will go down next year! Really I love how the prices of food are so affordable compared to Italy for example or Spain, a small tip since as a solo traveler it is always more expensive to eat and harder to split stuff, you can always try to ask for half portions. For some foods that is possible for example you could ask to have half a tzatziki and half of some other spread and in that way try 2 dishes instead of one. Some restaurants will do it if you politely ask, some will say no but you can try it. The Greek food industry is known for adjusting to the customer.

what will be very interesting on this Greece journey is to find out if you got laid (or even flirted) while in Ios....

Greece is overtly overrated, personally I found Tunisia to be similar (architecture, Mediterranean climate etc..) with better hotels and cheaper options, also when it comes to Islands, Thai or Indonesian islands are much better, I wont spend a penny on Greece any more after discovering Thailand and Indonesia.
