    Once while we were building a house on Daily on Island Alabama , we were told by an engineer who drew up the plans for a house to nail straps with certain nails . Nails we never used before . We told him this and he said that was what HIS plans called for and we were required to use them . So we used them . A month or so later he comes back and tells us we have to replace ALL nails in the straps as they were rusting . Needless to say , I had no part in replacing those nails .

    The couple that wanted a fireplace in their apartment could probably have gotten a fake one, although they might have had to use fake brick/stone depending on the loadbearing capacity of the floor. They may not have liked it as much as a real fireplace, but it seems like the best option for them.

    • @emmettmcnally740

      Electric fake firelogs can put out a surprising amount of heat if you get a good one

    • @HappilyHomicidalHooligan
      @HappilyHomicidalHooligan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It isn't their best option...it's their ONLY Option...
      Modifying the building to install a wood burning fireplace on the 4th floor will require a new footing directly under the fireplace and structural steel columns from the footing up to the floor supporting the fireplace...THEN you need to punch a chimney AND Fire/Heat Insulation for that Chimney all the way up to the roof...
      Depending on it's weight, a gas burning fireplace would be simpler to install since they're usually lighter than a wood fireplace (so the structural reinforcement required would be a LOT less drastic) and the chimney can be routed straight out the side of the apartment on the 4th floor...
      Either way, you're going to need a LOT of Permissions from the City, the building Owner AND the residents of the Apartments below yours...
      Good Luck with getting the Permissions...
      Buy a Lottery Ticket instead, you have a FAR better chance of winning enough money to buy a chunk of land and build a custom home with a fireplace in it...
      😄😁😆😅😂🤣

      A flat screen TV with a fireplace on the screen would have been a good idea inside. Could have had a casing built around the TV to *look* like a fireplace and had a "fireplace" at the push of a button.

    When in Belize in '95 locals told me of a recent fiasco - the Belizean government decided they wanted to build a dam to control waters when the annual flooding rains came. They hired a Canadian engineering firn who examined the area and toldcthe Belizean government that they could build a good dam at a certain crucial point in the river that would do the job. The Belizean government however stated, " Oh no, we want you to build it in this other location." The Canadian firm informed them that for logistical reasons an effective damn couldn't be built there, it needed to be in a certain location.
    Well the Belizean government finally said, " No, justcbuild it where we want you to. " so the firm built a dam at the incorrect point and basically took the money and said, " Good luck! ...idiots." ..and low and behold, the next rainy season came, flood waters overcame and destroyed the ill-placed dam. The engineers were like, " Well, we told you so."

    Parallel… I gave out some late in the spring tomato plants, most advanced ones were starting to try to bloom. It is June 29th. A woman asks me if it’s possible for her to have tomatoes (full sized and fully ripe) by July 4th. My immediate answer was “From the store!” (Bloom to set can take that long, then the fruit has to grow and ripen) I further told her it would take at least three weeks to have the tomatoes grow, expect end of July to enjoy the delicious red tomatoes….

    My dad had to go inspect some cranes, found put maintenance was barely done on it and they were using a crane that holds up to 14 tons to pick up 17 ton objects. He said the structural damage was not salvageable and had to shell 1.4 million to replace it. But instead of doing that, he just decided they will have to make due with the smaller cran

      @@HappilyHomicidalHooligan my dad was an equipment specialist for the government. So when his reports go in, he doesn't really get to see the punishments. He did have to take a 14 hour flight to Anchorage in Alaska because some guy got crushed by a shipping container. Turns out the guy was standing in front of the vehicle too close and would have survived if he had been wearing his helmet.
      He also had to deal with a crane that fell over for the same reason somewhere else, however he had no choice but to allow a brand new crane, which was a huge loss of money. He tends to find a lot of issues with a lack of maintenance.

    Not an engineer, but my grandma's husband had his own huse built. As he was having it built, he decided he wanted the foundation to be on a big concrete slab. My dad advised against it (he'd built houses from scratch) but he did it anyways. Turns out, they poured the concrete before they hooked up the hot water to the master bathrom. Now they have a master bathroom bigger than a normal hotel room, but it has to have the hot water heater turned on an hour before you shower. -_-

Rectangular room with a rectangular drain in the middle from which the floor goes up with the same angle in all directions so that the edge to the wall is at the same height everywhere. When I told him that this isn't possible in a rectangular room he just laughted and told me that's what he tried to explain to the client for half an hour. After that my father just gave up, acted confused and asked the client (a retired architect) if he could draw him a plan for that so he won't mess it up. It was only then that the architect realised

    I'm an Electrician, retired, and would get asked all the time to change a breaker. So, I'd go out, expecting to find a breaker that won't reset for one reason or another. And what I find is:
    The Microwave, refrigerator, covfefe pot, rice cooker, toaster, and others all all plugged into the same circuit, often the same outlet with a power strip or worse. Turns out what they really want is me to drop a 30 Amp breaker onto 14 gauge wire. Sorry, man, I'm not helping you burn your house down.

    Magical thinkers who graduated from Dunning-Kruger University provide most of the comedy, and tragedy in the world.
    Hindenburg? Titanic? Challenger? Columbia? Chetnobyl? All these disasters were caused by twits ignoring the laws of physics.
    'Let's fill a balloon with hydrogen, then paint it with thermite!' (Hindenburg)
    'Let's build the biggest ship in the world out of substandard iron and race it thru an ice field at full speed!' (Titanic)
    'Let's build rockets, then ignore safety regs to get our spy satellites in place for the Gulf War!' (Challenger and Columbia).
    'Let's build a flammable graphite nuclear reactor, test it up to ignition temperature, then leave the test running without telling the second shift!' (Chernobyl)
    Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. Booooom.
    It would be funny if it didn't kill people.

    My daughter worked for a company that did building plans and site details. She was the one who went out to verify the contractor followed specs. Any time something didn’t get done or was inconvenient to do the builder would try to get her to just mark it off so they could go on. Her reply was always “I’m signing a legal document that the building and the plans match. If anything ever happens it will be my fault if the building doesn’t match the specifications. I’m not taking liability for your screwup and if you don’t like it you can call my boss to remove me. But I will tell him why I won’t sign off and you can try to convince him to sign the paperwork.” They didn’t like it but they couldn’t argue it either.

    • @tennisontower8003
      @tennisontower8003 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On top of the above reply, there is also the delay in converting the signal from wire to fiber and back at each end. The 60ms the fiber actually achieved was probably the result of at least a few junctions slowing the transfer

    • @AlessandroGenTLe
      @AlessandroGenTLe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You both are right, I didn't consider the media difference, still it's around 124000miles/s. The hypothesis of having one single uninterrupted fiber pair (hence with no optical repeaters in the middle) is already unrealistic because repeaters are needed over around 60km distances, hence we may calculate just based of the speed of light into fiber. Which would be ~5590miles = ~9000km.
      Still too much. But yes, we don't know if he calculated the routers speeds and added latency
