I completely agree! I had a band leader whenever I had a solo - after I ran thru it once his feedback was always that’s good now just lead strongly and be bold and free. That created in me so much doubt because in my run thru I would be bold, free and that WAS already my version of strong! So the expectation set forth by my band leader would create so much doubt and then I always was striving beyond what my voice naturally wanted to do and that created lots of problems for me. Be aware of those expectations from others and yourself and keep them In check for the health, happiness and longevity of your singing 😊😉🤗

Thanks for your thoughts Freya. When getting feedback I usually disregard anything that has to do with "style" but rather focus on more tangible matters such as; am I out of pitch, tempo, is the key too high or too low and so on. Anything else is about my personal rendition and is about my personal voice which others may like or not, depending on their own tastes. It helps me to be focused and confident in my performance without second guessing - as the person below " A girl who likes to sing" experiences. Early in my performing career I had someone come to me after a performance who said - Hey John, that was a great performance and then he proceeded to critique. My reply was - Hey thanks for the encouragement but I did not ask for your critique. That stopped the conversation.
