      Actually, years later, Johnny grew quite weary of the Hope interviews. He drove him to the edge, boredom and too little spontaneity on Bob's part. Always scripted...
      I can see his point. Loved em both, tho. 👋💜

      Apparently all of Bob's replies were always scripted by his writers, and Johnny hated interviewing him, feeling he was incapable of giving a genuine and spontaneous interview.

    Johnny did not like Hope. That pencil tapping was like Chinese Water Torture. But yea, he hated him but had respect for him. Also, Carson had his deepest voice during this era of his show due to his incessant cigarette habit of 3 to 4 packs a day. Carson also hated it that he left during the interviews.

      that is a myth....Hope and Carson knew that the network bosses insisted that Hope go on the Carson show to promote his Specials...The Carson show had an audience of about 3 million night-owls...Hope's prime time specials drew 80 million viewers....so Carson had no way to prevent NBC from promoting Hope's specials on Carson's show

      @@essessessesq Thanks, we'll just call you the original myth buster. Very interesting numbers and Hope (based on the numbers alone) must have been pulling in about 10M annually vs. Carson's 1M annual (or perhaps it's Hope pulling in 20M/yr. and Johnny pulling in 2M/yr if you go by the numbers.

      @@harpoon_bakery162 yes. you're right, Bob Hope made a fortune from his highly-rated TV specials, which is why NBC kept him under contract for 60 years, until he was actually physically unable to do them anymore because he was well into his nineties...more trivia....Groucho Marx's son wrote a bio of Hope and revealed that Bob had shaved 3 years off his age early in his career...so Hope really turned 100 in the year 2000 and lived to the age of103

    I watched this without any preconceived notions and started reading the comments and just don't see any friction between Johnny and Bob. Sure, Bob is mainly there to promote some show, which must have been awful since they cut out the clip of it. Overall it was average funny for a Tonight segment.

  • @eduardo_corrochio
    @eduardo_corrochio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    It's been said that Bob Hope went on Johnny's show whenever he wanted (very powerful guy at the time), and often just to promote an upcoming TV special. Hope always needed to have jokes prepared ahead of time, so before an appearance with Johnny he'd have his people send Johnny a list of several questions that Johnny would have to ask Bob on the show, and Johnny was not to stray from them; answers were prepared ahead of time for laughs. I can only imagine how Johnny reacted mentally to such nonsense. Hope was always scripted, Johnny was often spontaneous and loose. So it was a bad mix.
    I think Bob was fidgeting so much here (pencils) because he was edgy or nervous. A TV taping like Carson's show, without any prep or cue cards, may have been trying for him. Strikes me as insecure to behave like that. Maybe he was secretly resentful or envious of Carson's easy manner and relaxed demeanor.

    • @essessessesq
      @essessessesq 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      NBC insisted that Hope go on shows like Carson's to promote Hope's specials.....remember, Carson's late night show had an audience of 3 million viewers...but Hope's prime-time specials drew 80 MILLION viewers...Hope was BIG $ for NBC...Carson was small potatoes...Carson was well aware of that...and NBC never offered Carson a prime time show....unlike Carson's 2 predecessors as host of the Tonight Show...both Jack Paar and Steve Allen graduated from the Tonight show to prime time NBC shows, and both of them were successful...but NBC never gave Johnny a shot at prime time.
