""Pennsylvania 6-5000" is a famous big band swing song performed by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. It was released in 1940 and became one of the iconic pieces of the swing era. The title refers to a telephone number for the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City, which at the time used the telephone exchange name "Pennsylvania" followed by a five-digit number (6-5000)." ~Leland Palmer
I just read an article online which states that demolition of the Hotel Pennsylvania in NYC is slated to begin in January 2022. For those who are unaware, Pennsylvania 6-5000 has been the Hotel Pennsylvania's telephone number for decades, and Glenn Miller and his band played at the hotel in the late 1930's/early 1940's. I wonder who will get the iconic Pennsylvania 6-5000 number now that the hotel is scheduled for demolition?
I'm a New Yorker. I went inside a few years ago to see the famous ballroom. It was under renovation. Strange because why would they spend all that money in renovation when they were just going to demolish the hotel?? I'll have to do a little research to see exactly what's going on. I'm only very rarely in that neighborhood these days.
This is a fine sound recording. ThereS something about Glenn Miller I realy Admire THAT BIG BAND SOUND 😍 . I'm 64 now wasn't alive when Glen Miller was
played trombone for a year in jr hs also enjoy the "warmth" of early recordings one of my brothers father-in-law was a Miller. A ceramics engineering student turned soldier boy in the 40's i play this song in his memory quite often
I know I'm old!!🙄 But the music of that era never seems old to me! Our parents were starting our family then. I love music from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s as much or more than recent years.🤓
Oh Glenn Miller....I know how you made this...dancing....telephon... music....for your wife to hear at home...though apart....miles away love....can fly....with your music... wonderful.....love the film..💕🌬🎶🎵🎼🎷🎺🎶🎵
I recently restored a gramophone cabinet for school and got a bunch of 78 rpm records from my moms friend. This song was one of them, definitely a keeper!
I loved listening to this and others on my older brother’s LP back in the 50s. Then in 1958 when we stayed at the Statler Hilton in NYC I saw that the phone number belong to the hotel, which was originally named The Pennsylvania Hotel.
That's Jimmy Stewart in the still picture, not Glenn Miller. Stewart did play him in "The Glenn Miller Story", but you'd think if you went through the trouble to post this, you'd give Glenn his rightful credit.
I REALLY DIG. ** THE MUSIC OF. GLENN MILLER. AND A COLD BEER. "" MILLER ( THE CHAMPAGNE OF BEERS). AND. A HIT PIAZZA. !!! O N L Y INN AMERICAN YOU CAN FINE. THIS TYPE OF MUSIC TALENT. & SKILLS.
While this song played they were showing Roger's apartment with his humble but special knack knacks, his shelves, kitchen, etc, it looked like an ikea commercial.
I live in Germany. I was at a town Fest today where there were various stages set up to play live music - and I chose the one that had the big band sound orchestra played by school kids - and they played this BEAUTIFULLY
My uncle and his friend from the south ,got husled oout o a he she bar in 1943 los angeles.the werw in the army. They sai on a bus stop bench and waited as 7 marines entered the bar and the rest is history.
Yes, thank you Pennsylvania for your choice on 11/3/2020... (not the 7th) Too bad the highly suspect and at times illegal behavior and almost certain rampant election fraud in Philly was enough to overturn the results and give Biden/Harris Trump's positon. 😢 Gotta love living in a Banana Republic😐
thank you, Sydney Hoffman.
Sydney is one of my top 10 personas of Roger 🥰
Right? It always bugged me when I used to hear this stuff and didn’t know how to look it up
I love this episode

My late father used to play this whilst his Sunday dinner cooked and my late mum would do the Yorkshire puddings. Both sadly gone up to heaven now..
What an awesome memory my friend...I can easily imagine it...

Glenn Miller never gets old..... his music will be evergreen forever and ever. Thanks for posting this wonderful share.
One of my dad's favorite band leaders. Listened to this gem growing up plus many others. Smooooth!

USA midterms brought me here ! Everytime I hear the name Pennsylvania I think of this song !
"Pennsylvania is-a-swing-state." With a little effort, you can say it in place of "Pennsylvania 6-5000."
Just wanted to hear something from long ago. I look at old pictures of 1800s & 1900& wonder how it was. Today you can listen to anything with a phone.
My grandparent’s favorite song, many a dance to this classic.
I loved listening to this and others on my older brother’s LP back in the 50s. Then in 1958 when we stayed at the Statler Hilton in NYC I saw that the phone number belong to the hotel, which was originally named The Pennsylvania Hotel.
I love the music. It was a music for the people during the second world war. He gives joy and hope for the soldiers.
