      Now you must give it time and check it out but the UK and Australia are doing trade talks and one part of the talks is to remove the need for visas either way , but I'm not sure about work visas .

However, when I return to the UK which I do regularly, it feels like home. Congrats! I just found your vids and found them really informative. I really like that you have a balanced opinion about the differences between the two countries and, more importantly, acknowledge when you don't have enough experience about something. Some vloggers make it their shtick to be over the top about certain aspects of US life that just play into simple stereotypes without acknowledging the full picture. The reality is the 2 countries are so different that it's hard to compare at a glance... some Brits move here and love it (or hate it) and some Americans move over there and love it (or hate it). As with most things it really comes down to personal circumstance.

  • @blotski

    The only disadvantage to keeping US citizenship is being taxed by the Americans for anything you earn, anywhere! Welcome to being a Brit by the way. I'd love to know one thing though. Somebody told me this once and I'd like to know if it's true. If you have dual citizenship each country regards you as belonging to them first and the other second. So you have to use your American passport when entering and leaving the US but you have to use your UK passport at UK passport control. I'd love to know.

    • @RJS4287

      A minor grumble but Australian tax can be quite tough on overseas income. As an Australian/UK dual my pension pot made in Australia is tax free up to almost equivalent of GBP1million. But my UK occupational pension - accumulated on same terms - is classed by the Australian Tax Office as overseas income and is taxed. Also means I have to put a tax return in and pay provisional tax in advance. UK OAP are also taxed in Australia. In Australia Old Age Pensions are means tested and not universal but tax free if you are eligible. But very, very first world problems ....willingly pay tax to live here.

    • @phoebus007
      @phoebus007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not strictly true. You pay tax on your UK earnings to HMRC. The IRS will only come after you for income that is taxable in the US but not subject to tax in the UK. For example, Boris Johnson, who was born in New York, had to pay Capital Gains Tax (CGT) to the IRS for the profit on the sale of his house in London. In the UK, CGT is not charged on profits from the sale of your main residence. He gave up his US citizenship shortly afterwards.

    • @gemoftheocean
      @gemoftheocean 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You still have to file US Taxes, BUT, if you make LESS than a certain amount of pounds, you don't have to pay taxes on it. The allowance is fairly high. I think you had to make more than £90k. You'd be taxed on amount over 90k. I'd be concerned if I were her to make SURE she had 40 quarters or more of paying US Social Security tax in. I.e. 10 full years. Otherwise afaik, she wouldn't collect zip.

      If you have a passport for the UK and entering the UK, overseas dependances, Crown, and other UK territory then use the British passport, the same if entering USA, its colonies and possession use the USA passport.
      However, she might be a dual national but there is a disclaimer in the UK passport that states that the British government will not protect you from military service or other requirements in the other country that you are a citizen of.
      Additionally the UK can render you stateless (though illegal under international legislation) by rescinding your eligibility for a UK passport (as has been done to groomed children who went to Syria).
      Being a British citizen will not stop the British from deporting you, as this has happened with hundreds of people whose families originated from the carribean.

    • @phoebus007
      @phoebus007 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@olavsantiago Britain only removes citizenship from those who also qualify as citizens of another country, as was the case with those, albeit teenagers, who knowingly travelled and joined an organisation which declared itself an enemy of this state.
      The people deported to Caribbean countries had previously been sentenced to terms of imprisonment of at least 12 months and were also citizens of those countries to which they were deported.

    Well done - as an Australian / UK dual I found one of the odd advantages (?) is that a UK passport is less than half the price of an Australian one (GBP 75 as opposed to $AUD300). However - though many may not agree - the UK one used to be a lot more useful when pre-Brexit it was also an EU one. If forced to give up one citizenship, for me it would be the UK one. Australia is a long way from anywhere but the standard of living, healthcare etc is in my view far better .I used to pick which passport to enter the UK on, on the basis of the length of the queues at Heathrow - but COVID has also stuffed that as vaccination certs etc are linked to one passport only and Australia is a lot more strict in terms of visas, borders etc.

    To answer your question, Canada or Australia would both be nice and easy (we have family who have emigrated to Australia and they now have dual citizenship there) but, for me, I think it might be Germany or Switzerland - everything just seems to work so well in those countries.
    One small point that you will be aware of but other US viewers may not is that even with a British passport and living in the UK, US citizens still have to file a US tax return (and of course, this will also apply to hubby if he ever gets a green card).

    Congratulations! Sounds like hard work 🙂. Just interested to know what benefits you would get by having a UK passport on top of you official citizenship…are there any, or is it just because you can?
    To answer you question at the end of the video, I would choose Portugal for my dual citizenship: love the people, the country, the food, climate…and the port, obviously! Very civilised 😆

      Well it certainly does in Kaylin's case and many others, you're quite right. In recent months I've been watching many similar videos of people from overseas of all creeds and colours becoming British citizens and they all seem decent hard-working and likeable people. But your assertion doesn't prove any such thing. Don't you watch the news? Does the word Dover ring any bells? Unfortunately there are some who come here illegally, don't want to learn the language, integrate, expect everything under the sun, complain that their wi-fi isn't good enough, and other petty complaints, trash hotels they are living in for free, and in some instances commit serious crimes. All helped by the woke brigade of course. I don't supposed these people are deeply worried about paying their fuel bills this winter either, or even having enough to eat. This situation isn't fair on Kaylin and countless thousands like her, who did everything by the book.

    Hi Kailyn,
    Congrats! So you're no longer an honourary Brit but a 'real' one!!
    No country is perfect and has pluses and minuses having lived outside the UK for a few years.
    I'm looking at a golden visa from Portugal as that gives me access to the Shenanigan region without the 90 day restriction rule. Looked at Spanish citizenship but their taxes are nearly as bad as the US!! ;)

  • @thedeutschman9905

    Great video, here are some corrections to verify: you said only certain visas lead towards the ILR, but that's not entirely true. If you stay for 10 years, most of the visas can count as long residence, even if you were here as a student initially, and therefore you can count them as ILR. But if you're here as a visitor, short term student visa, or as a seasonal worker, then you can't count those as part of your long residence. Secondly, yes it's true you'll lose your ILR if you stay outside the UK for more than 2 years, HOWEVER, you can still get a Returning Resident visa, so it's not exactly true that you have to start over, you don't have to be married or work to get it even, you just have to prove that you intend to make this your home. Also, I don't know what your plans are, but if you ever plan to have kids with your Husband, do not get them US citizenship unless you plan to raise them in the US, as they'll have to file taxes in the US even if they never set foot there. Otherwise, congratulations and best of luck.

    Congratulations! I am a Brit who has lived in the States for 20 years and am still struggling to get American citizenship, even though I have all the credentials and got a master's degree from an American university. The system is broken.

    • @Psmith-ek5hq
      @Psmith-ek5hq 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In what way/s?

    • @dacutler
      @dacutler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Psmith-ek5hq The main way it is broken revolves around the status. If, for any reason, including ones that are beyond the immigrant's control, they fall out-of-status, it's almost impossible to get back in-status, no matter what credentials they already have. If, for example, the company they are working for under a bona fide visa, reorganizes and the employee has to reapply to maintain legal employment, it's likely the application for the same visa they had before the change (or any progress in the citizenship) will be rejected because going out of status happens immediately and they have to leave the country, with no return possible, for 3 years, or 10 years if the process takes more than 6 months. Yes, no matter what credentials a person has, an application to get back in status will be rejected because they are out-of-status!!!! A classic Catch 22 situation!

    • @Psmith-ek5hq
      @Psmith-ek5hq 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @rowanbarrett6508

      It is a catch 22 but if you are out of status as a student in the US, the only option you have is to marry a US Citizen.

    • @dacutler
      @dacutler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rowanbarrett6508 Even marrying a US citizen doesn't guarantee a path to citizenship. There are many examples of this not being successful. For example, all that has to happen is for the person to be out of status for any reason before getting married and that overrides the path created by the marriage. Out-of-status can kill any process the immigrant can have, no matter what their credentials are.

    My wife and I (Brits) lived for 14 years in California with green cards and our younger son was born there.
    So, he has dual citizenship.
    The only downside seems be that the US requires you fill in tax forms every year wherever you are.
    The UK is more laid back. No forms if you are not resident with no UK income.

    This is one of those things that isn’t quite reciprocal. Unlike the US, Britain doesn’t chase its citizens for tax on income earned elsewhere, depending on actual place of residence. The other big difference is that an immigrant seeking US citizenship has to renounce all other nationalities - a migrant in the UK doesn’t have to do this. The good news is that you don’t have to to notify your country of origin. Therefore the USA regards you as a citizen of only the USA, but in reality you can continue to use your other nationality when you wish.

  • @olavsantiago

    As you're an immigrant to the uk I would highly recommend that you keep copies of your "official" UK documents and certificates, even as a new British "citizen", as you can still get deported back to the US. The British have done this and still do this.

    One minor disadvantage of dual citizenship is as follows. I am a US/EU dual citizen and was told by a friend in the FBI that having a second passport would be an impediment to my getting a security clearance. I decided that it’s better to have both passports, 28 countries being better than 1.
