    Thanks for this video.
    Could you tell us more about the basics of portfolio design layout? I mean the page size, how many pages, margin size, suitable font size & style... etc.
    Also, what is the preferable orientation? Portrait or landscape? I see most of the online portfolios landscaped from the cover, but when it comes to the facing pages it seems too long.

    Kind of unrelated but it would be really interesting to see you render images with very diverse scenery. I have seen that most of the times the surroundings on the image are either forest, with the projects being secluded cabins in the woods or subourban residences. Most oftenly I am asked to render scenes from a city and the surroundings have to apply to the existing ones and it seems a lot more difficult and your tips might be very useful.

    This video was so helpful, but i just had a question if for example it's more suitable for one project to use a main image spread style as an introductory spread and on another project it's more suitable to increase white area and have the main image only on the right page and white space and text on the left, will this somehow create inconsistency throughout the portfolio?

    • @ShowItBetter
      @ShowItBetter  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      well this is totally subjective and based on my taste, but the spread where you introduce each project is important to have a consistent language so the viewer can understand that someone is starting a new project. If not it can be a bit confusing

      Thank you for your comment and for watching the video! In my experience, it's important to choose legible fonts for your portfolio or resume. I never understand why people don't work with layers on the master pages. One image layer (that holds the images on the document pages and one "page number / header" layer on the master page. That way you never have to over ride stuff and the page number is always on top. easy peasy

    The problem I might face when creating my portfolio for masters uni as a 2nd year ArchiStudent, is like in uni we do 99% only group project. I can’t put someone’s else’s plan in my portfolio but if I worked on the section plans and my teammate on the views, like I am not gonna put just random plans with no other drawing to support the project. What should I do?

    • @ShowItBetter
      @ShowItBetter  ปีที่แล้ว

      When creating your portfolio as a second-year Architecture student with mostly group projects, you can overcome this challenge by:
      Clearly defining your role in each project.
      Including sketches and concept development drawings that highlight your individual thinking.
      Presenting your section plans and explaining your design decisions.
      Emphasizing teamwork, coordination, and communication skills in collaborative projects.
      Including supplementary drawings, with permission from teammates, that support your section plans.
      Showcasing personal projects or design competitions to demonstrate individual work.
      Providing a brief description for each project to provide context.
      Focus on demonstrating your skills, creativity, and potential as an architect while acknowledging the collaborative nature of the projects.

    As good as this channel is I believe that propagating the idea of creating portfolios in book format with a left and right page is harming and detached form the real world. Even with without considering that it incetivizes towards either small or vertical pictures, companies (almost) never print portfolios nor do they visit links (like issue). There seems to be a lot of fetishization of layouting, without understanding the context. The people who hire scroll through a portfolio on a screen for 2-10 minutes per person.

      Hey Stefan!
      These are just layout ideas for some portfolios, not all of them. For sure there are many ways of displaying images/text/drawings in a page, this is just a couple that I thought for this project, would be suitable.
      I don't really think people putting their drawings in a small or vertical way is a real issue per se, perhaps an issue would be only thinking there is only one way of putting your images, but as you can see here, I tried to place images in a full bleed spread, others in a small proportioned way according to the white space and in other ways that suited each image best. So the fact that an image is vertical, square, horizontal, small or big I don't think by itself is an issue. It's more a matter of how all of the elements in the spread are communicating one idea or telling one story...
      And yeah, I agree people who scroll through portfolios to hire are spending less and less time on each individual one, that is why i think the general layout structure, story and idea are stronger than thinking of a single format, size ratio or website page. It's maybe more of how can you tell a good story and show a good project and your role in it, in a way that is understood at a glance and from afar.
      All this to say that these aren't the definitive portfolio layouts or styles anyone should use, they are just a small sample. I'm by no means preaching for everyone to copy these :)
      What do you think are the best layout designs, or things you should keep in mind for the current portfolio era? Interested in hearing your thoughts!

    Hey Steven! Thank you for such an amazing video. I love the styles shown in here. However, I would like to know how can one create a portfolio in minimum number of pages for Uni applications showing maximum number of projects in the this simplistic format. I have been struggling to fit in maximum drawings in minimum space. Also, the portfolio is a combination of UX + Architecture works.

    • @ShowItBetter
      @ShowItBetter  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Manjiri! That is one of the biggest struggles tbh. You have to curate very carefully what projects and images you need in your portfolio. Less is always more, and the more you filter and ask yourself, which are the best 2-5 images that explain my project and my skills as an architect, the better. Remember that the portfolio is a first impression of you as an architect, but it's not the last one. In an interview you have a second impression and chace of showing more images and projects you have worked in. So don't try to show all of your cards from the start, make them curious to see more.

    Hello! Loved the video, it was really helpful! I was wondering if there is an app or site that transforms a regular pdf portfolio into a realistic book look alike (i don't mean an online flipbook, i mean an actual book) as you showed in the 3:45 of this video? Thanks :)
