Gosh this is lovely! Seeing _real_ ice dancing! It's been turned into pairs skating lite by 2020. Thank you for posting this. Some might think it's boring to watch each pair skate the same dance over and over, but not me.

I couldn't agree more! Your calling current ice dancing "pairs skating lite" is right on! The "dance" couples now skate apart, perform "ice dance 'spins' " (SPINS? are you kidding me?), even costume themselves like pairs skaters! What's next? .. A throw double choctaw? Give me edging, lines, flow across the ice, expertly performed twizzles, chasses, rockers, swings, cross rolls, etc. .. All the things that ARE ice dancing!~ And bring back the Compulsory Dance .. a real test of a pairs expertise! BTW, I also love to watch this "real" ice dancing! .. Miss it so much!

Me too! Not even a compulsory pattern in the RD any more. Really hope these are not lost forever.

I'm watching this 35-1/2 years after these Games (in October 2023) - and loving it just as much as if they just happened. I'm a former competitive roller dance skater (low-level) and I so miss these compulsory dances.

I really liked Annenko and Stretenski's Viennese, and I'm with the British Judge's 5.9! It's such a shame we have to watch 33 year old videos because there are no longer any world class competitions skating the compulsories, however the quality for a 1988 recording is much better than most of the older olympic recordings.

It’s too bad that they did away with the CDs altogether. I agree that it’s become more like figure skating light. Some of it is a shift away from ballroom dance and more toward modern dance. Big think there was a place for at least some CD. It really shows the mastery of the details and the dances.

Am wondering if there were problems with the ice for the last group of the first pattern causing two couples in a row to have a slip. After so many couples this is understandable, but wouldn't they send the ice machine around to resurface?

ice dancing has lost its way; bring back compuslory dances and drop the rhythmdance

My proposed format: first round - two CDs (1/3 total), second round: one OSP with a prescribed rhythm (1/3 total) and one OD (free choice of rhythm) 1/3 total

Eliminating compulsory s was the death nil of ice dancing

There must be millions of Ice Dancers who miss seeing the stars of today tackle the compulsory dances, but one sequence of something that looks as if it’s never been practiced for ages doesn’t do it. For me the New Era of Ice Dancing leaves me cold, as despite the freedom the new rules allow, the routines have become so boring and repetative. Lots of show, making an entrance onto the ice, even more to get in the ‘zone’ to start, and then three turns or mohawks to get into back crossovers to get to the first lift, and twizzles at arms length. Then it’s a race to cram in as many elements as possible. I can hardly stand to watch them anymore. What happened to style, grace, smoothness, togetherness and eye contact? Dare I say movement in time with music?
