  • Wow! What an amazing battle. The end/winner was a total surprise to me.
    Lye is not for kids to play with. Mix lye in water where well ventilated. Never mix water in lye as the result is hazardous. Don't mix lye in a non-tempered glass as you can see my mix reached 190 degrees.

    I am surprised at your conclusion - I thought the corn starch one gave a much better shape in the end - did you know there is another formula using corn starch -- add some mineral oil to it and that makes it easier to work with.

    Wow, so helpful! But I was surprised that you chose the Dawn mold. I thought surely you'd choose the mold made with cornstarch. I'm new to mold-making, but I make molds for polymer clay instead of soap. Thanks for doing all the heavy lifting for a newbie!

    2 things. you can take and put your silicone mix in one pan and press the other one over it easy and it will help form it and give it a uniform thickness. Second when demolding take a can of conpressed air like keyboard cleaner. and shoot it in between the mold and soap. will pop the mold free

    With the constancy one you have to add a fair amount to the silicone but you should also add some oil, I use baby oil which blends in nicely

    What about a silicone coil at the top to give yourself something to grip when releasing from the soap? It would also add some rigidity to the rim of the mold, hence, wouldn’t tend to bow as much. Thank you so, much, for your post. I do pottery/ceramics and I’m learning to make molds for surface design. 👍😀

    In my sculpture classes in college we found that using RTV silicone set up better and made a better mold. We used the dawn method. Sometimes the cheap silicone would never set up at all.

  • @CorenaGaroutte
    @CorenaGaroutte 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Silicone will mold around silicone. You can just take some more silicone and mold it around your first mold to strengthen it. The one with thin spots you can just take pieces of fresh silicone ( with dawn) and smooth it over those areas.

  • @58Kym

    You could try using gauze to reinforce the cornstarch dough or even the straight silicone. Put a layer over your shape, lay gauze over that and then cover it with more gauze. Alternatively, just spatula silicone on the gauze and lay it on in strips until the thing is covered.

    Seriously....loose the aluminum pans. And if your soap turns bright orange and emits fumes....that's the aluminum reacting to the lye so if that pan touches the soap....that will be an issue.

    I don't think you worked the cornstarch long enough

    • @TomboTronic
      @TomboTronic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I fully agree Nick. The cornstarch should be worked until it is a uniform putty like consistency rather than all powdery and dusty. For ease of use and uniform finished product, cornstarch wins in my book everytime. Like Nick says though it needs to be worked longer to make a valid comparison. If it was setting up too fast it was due to the ten minute delay while you dealt with the postman, not a deficiency in the cornstarch method.

    • @hollylowery26
      @hollylowery26 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Doe with the dish soap mold he added soap as a release agent before adding the silicone. On the corn starch mold he didn't put any thing on the pan as a mold release agent before adding the silicone.

    Trace...16:40 right there. That's a light trace. You poured at thick trace. Aim for light to medium trace if you want to design or add fragrance. Light is better because some scents will accelerate trace....and give you soap that's bionic if you aren't ready for it.

    • @Mity_Moose
      @Mity_Moose  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose you can. Not sure what it will do to the soap characteristics.

    • @nocturnaldaisy6181
      @nocturnaldaisy6181 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can but it’s not just about drying or letting the water evaporate from the soap. There is still a chemical reaction going on with the oils. A natural cure is best. You can use the soaps safely after 2 weeks but the soap will not last as long as a hard fully cured soap.

  • @nicolemitchell446
    @nicolemitchell446 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed you didn't fragrance the soap. I wonder what effect that would have especially on the cornstarch one. Also I've seen people use baby oil in the cornflour one. Did the soap smell like silicone? Great video. Thanks for sharing 😀

    • @Mity_Moose
      @Mity_Moose  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nicole, I am allergic to most fragrances, so I quit using those. The soap smells like soap. But when I use olive oil the soap starts to stink, like it is not keeping well. So, just stick with simple ingredients. Thanks for the compliment.

      Baby oil has a mineral oil base (which is the oil another youtuber suggested) for the silicone / cornstarch mold. Is mineral oil chemically preferable for this process ... or can I use vegetable oils, like sunflower oil for instance?

  • @peepla7
    @peepla7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The cornstarch actually was better. The mold has weak spots which is why it ripped and you need a lip or a recess ...like most silicone pans. And it was stronger....more structurely sound. So I vote for the cornstarch pan....now add some silicone to repair the rip and continue on.

    I found these two videos to be very informative. I had to look up why lye must be used in soap-making, because at first I thought you must be a tar-worker or something to need so much lye soap around. Now I realize that lye is used in all soap-making. (Live and learn!) I really enjoyed your videos. I find that these 'regular man on the street' type how-to videos are a lot more informative and trustworthy than the corporately-sponsored professional ones, which are usually nothing more than a thinly-veiled sales-pitch for this or that product. Here is a question though: Why does every video I've seen about this always use Dawn dish-washing liquid, and never any other brand? Is Dawn special in some way? Was the whole two-part video series sponsored by Sunlight, to discredit Dawn??? (After all, cornstarch took the belt.)
    Yes, I know Dawn is what they use to clean oil off ducks caught in oil-spills, and all of that, (applause from me) but what is the chemical difference between Dawn and any other dish-washing detergent?

    • @Mity_Moose
      @Mity_Moose  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow! What a nice compliment, Laura. Thank you. Made my day. When Mity Mouse does the dishes, he uses Dawn. It's the best grease cutter and the only soap on hand. Haha, ironic it is that everyone uses it for soap molds.

      I used to be an Ajax man because of that Ajax squeak commercial 150 years ago. But the "spousal unit" has convinced me that spending a few more pennies on Dawn does a much better job on cleaning. Been nearly 20 years since I switched and never looked back. Too funny.

      I stumbled upon Dawn 30+ years. It was on sale! I have not stopped using it. My experience with it is the same as stated above. After living in “oil country” I learned that the men used Dawn exclusively on the rigs for many years. That is why they started using it on the wildlife.

    Frankly your soap recipe isn’t a very balanced one so that’s why it thickens so fast. If you want a soap that doesn’t set up so fast drop your palm down and add in some olive oil or other liquid oil. It will be a more conditioning soap too since palm is a more drying oil. Using primarily palm and coconut oils isn’t going to give you as moisturizing of a soap compared to other handcrafted soaps but it still beats store bought- lol
    Your palm oil can also give you spots and the clouding you are mentioning from the stearic acid in it. You really should heat the entire container of palm oil and stir it well before dishing out what you need because the stearic acid will settle to the bottom unless you buy the no stir type that has been treated so that it doesn’t do that. Not doing so will mean more stearic acid is in the bars made from the bottom of the tub which cam cause your soaps to have white spots and throw off how your recipe behaves. It’s not so much an issue just making plain soap but if you want to get into fancy colors and adding scents it can be problematic.
    For an easy recipe using what you have for the most part I suggest 5% castor, 25% coconut, 30% palm and 40% olive oil.
    Great video! I had thought about trying to make the diy molds myself but didn’t feel it was cost effective.

    • @Mity_Moose
      @Mity_Moose  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mesha, I have shared your comments with others. I have been happy with my formula for 5 years now. I have experimented with other oils and fats to make a softer bar, but my skin only likes my formula. Lastly, i had never thought about my oil needing stirring because it is a solid or semi solid at room temps. But, you may be right and I will stir next time. Thanks for your input. I am about to make a new mold video in a couple of weeks when my new mold arrives. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

      Aluminum does not rust, the oxide produced is white.
      Iron, and stainless will rust, and since lye is a powerful oxidizer it will cause a reaction to both iron based alloys (stainless has nickel and while it will rust, won't stain the metal like stright iron would be) and aluminum produces a hydroxide and gas that is very harmful. Plastics like hdpe (research is needed since I don't remember if my reacts with this or pet) are the way to go, or straight silicone

      You can’t put the raw soap into an aluminum pan because the lye reacts with it.
