Well done, I would recommend a full painters suit as well to keep the fibreglass shards off your skin; these can be very irritating for most people. I have foiled the fin before adding top coat and final wet sand.
The video makes me itchy Just made my first panel this spring - nice to have scrap laying around now for bonzer fins and other twin fins. Working on a dust collection vac to go under my vice and catch all the glass shavings
Great video! Lovely fins. When using those slotted spring pins its best to force them into the hole rather than fix them with resin, let the spring function do the work and hold them in place.
Nice to See you staying Busy. TB you are The Master Surfboard Builder. Love the Fin Videos, how the New Shop During these Days? Thanks TB for this Video. Peace Be With You and Family. Gory of Ohio
How are you friend? I really enjoyed your video but if I can give you a tip, I'd advise you that next time you separate the resin plate from the glass, use an air compressor. Place the end of the hose between the glass and the resin plate and release the air. It will separate immediately. I'm saying this because same thing happened to me as it happened to you in the video (the glass broke) and it cut my hand. But I really enjoy the video, I follow your channel and I learn a lot with you!
Nice! I've been wanting to give that a try too but haven't - no excuses! I wonder if laying down a layer of that thin plastic food wrap on your layup plate would work. It should sand right off but don't know how it would stand up to polyester resin. Anyway, as always very nice work! BTW when we designed parts using prepreg graphite epoxy we allowed .010" per ply. I don't recall what the weight of the fabric alone was but it seems like that factor is about right in this case too. We vacuum bagged everything so that might make some difference too. Thanks for sharing your fantastic skills!
awesome!! i want to try, but i didn't get if you laid down all at once, or you did like sets of 4 sheets each time, waiting for them to dry and lay down the next 4 sheets until 32.
Thanks for the video. Just made my mold for a fin. Used epoxy resin, hardener, Add F, tint, and 32 layers of cloth. After the last layer it started to smoke and i took it out of my garage and out in the shade. No other problem and looks good but any idea why it was starting to smoke? Maybe too small an area, I only made one fin in. Pieces of fiberglass were 10”x16”
I did 4 layers at a time but only a few minutes between each set of 4. Total time took about 20 min. Did you wait much between your layers. Couldn’t tell on the video. Thanks for replying
@@gregpines2113 Too much epoxy in the mold and probably too high room temperature...?? or maybe even too much of hardener led to isothermic epoxy reaction. I had no problemes making fibreglass panels of 36 or even 40 layers with epoxy anytime...
@@gregpines2113 I did around 4 batches of 3 - 4 layers at a time then I'd let them dry and come back. Not to say that is the correct way, its just the way I did it.
G'day mate, Thank you so much for this video! Which thickness of the fibre glass do you use? I was checking it out but there are so many different thickness where I live 😅🙂
Yo been loving the channel, was wondering if you have made a video on repairing spider cracks? I don’t think I’ve seen you make one yet, I’ve chased them out with a dremel before but the repair looks ugly after. Any response is greatly appreciated
I've always been curious about what goes into making fins, thank you for sharing this! As someone who loves to surf and also build/make things, I'd love to try this out myself 🙂 Do you have any advice for someone trying to make their first fin?

The vacuum will be well worth it
I like those fins, especially the color makes them stand out.
Brilliant. I have used a polished porcelain floor tile to lay up on and it works a treat. Love the colour design’s
I work in a surf shop and with these videos I am learning to repair boards very good videos
Glad to hear it!

Choice bro, gotta be happy with those, well done.
Yew! Congrats on leveling up your surfboard building game! 💪🏻🤙
you can use a silicon cooking pad underneath in addition with whatever flat surface you use . it work just fine . reusable too.
Nice work. Try find PVA liquid release agent, your best friend for glass (or any) moulds.
Man, your skill level is impressive - always enjoy your videos
Thanks 🤙
awsome colors !

New shaping bay is still a work in progress 🤙
Pro Tip: Shape the fins like a tuna. Plump in the center.
....tuna are fast. Hence your board will be fast with similar shaped fins. 🤙🌊🏄
Just great! Congrats! And thank you: this is gonna be my next project 😉
🤙
Obrigado

Thanks, yes you could use wax paper as an alternative 🤙
would a final hotcoat eliminate the sanding voids? The finished product looks like on the fin sides there are white marks from sanding
That’s from air bubbles I didn’t get out during the layup. You could add a hotcoat but not necessary
Talent! 👍
Great Job ! Love it !! :D
El loco very prooooooo
so sick!!!!!
So great Man! How is the new shaping bay? )
Still working on it, more videos to come!
This was an epic video on building fins! Great work!
🤙
hi mate try a sheet of glass i use an old coffee table i dont have to wax first its to flat for it to hang on too
Hi bendheim, I’m 13, and I want to be a shaper I live on the east coast of Australia, I’ve shaped 2 twin fish boards, any tips
right on man! Just keep practicing. The more you make the more you learn!
Nice!
Very Cool…🤙😎

Need a mask for glassing and sanding. Can you advise what size you wear and if this mask has vapor and sanding cartridges?
Yes it has both. I wear a medium. Use my link if you buy one 🙏

Could have been the resin overheating. Possibly if you did all layers at one time

Rad! 👊🏻😎
Excellent video on the construction of your fins. What resin are you using and did you use any thinning agents like alcohol?
Polyester laminating resin and a hot coat at the end to help with sanding. No alcohol used
How many sheets of fibreglass where you laying at a time? 4? Cheers!
how well did they work in the water??
Haven't tested them yet! Soon!
G'day mate,
Thank you so much for this video! Which thickness of the fibre glass do you use? I was checking it out but there are so many different thickness where I live 😅🙂
6oz cloth
Hi Tanner, what kind of pen holder is that?
Rail marking gauge from Foam EZ
What was in the spray can man?
Aerosol finish coat?
Acrylic gloss clear coat

Thanks man. I don’t have a video on that. I don’t repair stress cracks unless they are leaking water
More work needed on fin foiling and also fin layup. Get yourself a spike roller and only layup and roll every two layers.
Yea man, first attempt at fins. Happy with how they came out, but definite areas to improve next go around
What if you realized that you forgot the hardener in like the 2nd batch of resin?
What kind of roller is that? I was going to use a wallpaper roller, but yours is a much smaller diameter.
Just one I found on amazon

So three layers at at time..let the resin kick and then add three more layers each time?
Yes, I did 4 layers at a time but 3 would be easier.
Don't let them kick in between, you'll get a much better chemical bond as well as mechanical.
hello good video! One question, what resin did you use polyester? or epoxy? Thank you
Polyester for these fins. Epoxy works as well though
@@BendheimBoards hey thank you very much .. very good videos greetings from Argentina!
Nice video.
Let me know if you need advice for the next batch. I make fins full time. Meraki Fins
Thanks, if I make more I’ll reach out 🤙
How much resin did you use for this batch of fins?
Great video!
Great video, where did you get the metal square/bolt that you put into the base of the fin? Was interested in trying to make one of my own
Thanks, from shapersupply.com
Couldn't you 3d print the fin in carbon fiber then wrap in fiberglass?
Moulds are bit more efficience on materials
Nice
Hola cuantos. Pedazos. De tela. De 6 onza cortan para que quede. En 10milimetros de grosor mmili
Waaaaaaaaaah!!!! Why are these multicolored pivot fins $100. This is why. Enjoyed the video.
What blade did you use to cut them?
Metal grade cutting blade
Top broo, 8", 10" and 12" ?? 😁😁
Two 9” and one 7.5”
gosh that is so itchy the way you do it, i got blister even if i touch those fiber glass dust.
👍😎
Downside is you’re paying for protective equipment and tools that cost much more than buying the fins new

Highly recommend not cutting fiberglass cloth in your living room
