Great shout out to Ashvin, he is a so much better food guide than the guy on the Mark Wiens series about Mauritius, resulting on a much better series about Mauritius food here ! cheers from Reunion Island (where the food is even better, sorry ;) )
As a Mauritian, i have to say that this video accurately summarises our diverse history and culture which I think you could taste in the food and which I’m sure you saw among the population. This small island is one of the rare places in the world where different cultures live in peace and harmony.
Great guide to show off the amazing food diversity and quality of Mauritius! This channel is going to skyrocket with more content from The Paradise Island (Mauritius)!
As a mauritian in Australia, watching this video makes me miss my island even more ! And I need to say this video is so beautifully made portraying our mixed cultures.
So similar to Trinidadian style of cooking. When you're back in Canada I can take you for some Trinidadian Dhal Pourie roti... or better yet we can go to Trinidad for their Indian and Creole style dishes.
Oh yes, as a Mauritian, I tried Trinidad cuisine, my fiancée and I were so amazed by the dholl puri and the chicken curry! It's very identical in terms of taste and texture!! If someone is in the KW region in Ontario, definitely give Madhu's Roti & Doubles a try. It's on Fischer-Hallman st. Madhu's is my go-to food, whenever I feel homesick! :)
I love this video, the food looked amazing! The Dholl Puri looks so delicious, I would love to try that and i loved to watch how they make them. Thanks for taking us on this journey with us.
Hehehe! I'm a Mauritian in Canada (with my fiancée).. so great to see a Canadian discovering the Mauritian cuisine! There are some people who prepare the same quality of 'Dholl puri' in Quebec!! Idk if they can ship everywhere in Canada though!
@Luke Martin, if you are in ON, and if you wanna try other Mauritian food, I can welcome you to contact me! I won't say I'm a great cook but, I can prepare some great dishes :P
You have to go to Guyana or Trinidad. The Indians that went to Mauritius are of the same descent as the Indians in Guyana and Trinidad...by the British. We have dholl puri, curries, customs just like the Mauritians.
I I live in Mauritius right now I'm in the UK forever but I go to Mauritius every year so seeing this makes me want to go back to Mauritius you should go to Port Louise
That’s why Mauritius can never be compared to India because of the multiculturalism where you can eat various cuisines next to each other, Asian, Oriental, Creole etc etc and every community respect and lives in harmony with each other.
Hi you have the choice in the curry to skip the chilli on demand but you have to tell when they are selling it and also you can try the Alouda - it's a nice drink with milk, ice cream and many good things that you can try there😊
The farata, samoussa, chutney and the masala chicken curry are not creole food. These are clearly indo-mauritian food. I think the vegetarian dishes are also not creole food and are most likely to be indo-mauritian food.
@@keshgrdhrno dhal puri is East Indian that is why Caribbean Indians, Guyanese Indians, Fuji Indians share the same food. Chinese do eat dhal puri same way you eat McDonald’s which is American fast food. The same way if I eat chow mein doesn’t make it not Chinese food.
Hi I am the guide, I think you need to do some more research on Mauritian Street Food and street food culture. While distinctly all the food have their own origin each of them have been adapted to the taste of the people who live on this island which is one of the reasons Mauritian food is not as spicy as indian food. Secondly a lot of the ingredients have also changed based on what's available here on the island. All these small changes and small tweaks brought to the cuisine gives it an identity which is kreol food. I think instead of passing Mauritian indian food as “creole” you should be honest about it. The food hasn’t been changed, the indentured labourers bought all the animals, marajuana, fruits and vegetables from Bihar when they came to Mauritius. The Africans are trying to pass off Indian foods which the East Indians shared with them as their own and totally bypassing them which is not on.
@@MCain007 Completely true. You are one of the few mauritians who knows history. There are people from guyana and suriname commenting that the mauritian food is similar to their countries' food and the reason behind this is because that the majority of indo surinamese and indo guyanese ancestors' came from from east india like most of the indo mauritians' ancestors so it is completely normal that their food is more or less the same as indo mauritian food.
Imagine traveling to Africa to try east African food only to find Indian food that you can buy in every country because Indians are literally everywhere.
Only thing missing was hare and tang(tandrakes) with is harder to find. Most Hindus don't eat porc. Beef is missing as well but it would have been a similar cookimg method to porc or deer.
I find the guy potah was talking too much and there was less focus on the food and with him talking too much, your video felt flat and did not showcase Mauritius and Mauritian food! Maybe just add what’s important and add pictures to give context and clarity when he is speaking because not everything that he said made sense to viewers, instead we were confused! Focus on Mauritius and the food!
Well, aren't you just incredibly ignorant. 1. We don't all arbitrarily have lentils and chick peas every single meal. It depends on preferences, and tends to be part of home made meals. 2.
