As an Englishman who has grown to love the NRL over the last 3 years or so, it was great to be educated as to the late Tina Turner's influence in the game. My dad loved her music and he was a RL fan so I'm guessing that's where his influence came from. God rest her soul.
I was a young man in the UK in a northern town and when I first saw Tina Turner promo of Australian rugby league it made me fall in love with the game all over again. Great times the 90s even in a northern English town enlightened by Australian rugby league Tina Turner Mal meninga et al. Great memories.
@@kerzytibok3211 Rugby "League " not union ! In the northern UK over 100 years ago the northern rugby teams went professional hence the division between League and Union. I am from the northern UK and it is our homegrown sport and in Australia League is the bigger code over union. Still I am genuinely surprised that you didn't know about Tina's long promotion of Australian rugby league. It's a great game and because of the wonders of the internet you can check out the back story of the sport and really get into it. Best wishes.
I didn't know that she did those commercial ads for rugby ? Sport I don't understand the rules, but I think, probably mistakenly, that she loved the challenges that life would produce for her. And took it on ! She was, and still is, somewhere, a beautiful woman ! That Australia and the players give thanks. That's just heartwarming ❤️
I'm rugby born, raised, and played but admit the marketing from those days of a great game with the energy of Tina Turner to this day has me watching league before rugby 🏉 ❤💥RIP Queen of Rock n Roll.
Yea still remember those Tina Turner promos they definitely were one of the best things to come out of Rugby League in the 90s. Both of the songs were awesome too. RIP Tina Turner, now an honorary rugby league goddess ❤❤
I definitely remember the Tina Turner and rugby league campaign as a kid from kiwi land, was cool to see such an awesome powerhouse 🌟 star come and perform here. There was a buzz in the air and that was from just seeing it on TV. R.I.P legend Tina 💜🙏
Watched the 93 grand final, Simply the best was the best performance and song for any grand final these past 30 years. It resonated with the toughness of the game. RIP legend Tina Turner
RIP Tina. Definitely a big PR gamble that paid off big time. The combination of her song and voice mixed with some the greatest rugby league for the times (80s to early 90s) was in a nut shell "simple the best ". 👌
A minutes silence at the first Origin in Adelaide and again at the GF is fitting for someone who knew nothing about League but did so much for the game. If the younger generation don't get it, put the footage from The Best promo up on the big screen and they will. RIP.
It was about the same time and I think because of Tina's involvement that Aussie Rugby League grabbed the attention of people like myself in New Zeland who played Rugby Union but saw the game in New Zealand as a really poor cousin. We saw a side of league that wasn't seen at home and it was attractive, exciting and because of the "life Ban" rules at the time, out of our reach here. Friday night footy became all the rage and people would often buy Cronulla, Bulldogs (Canterbury), Broncos tops etc and Aussie players became household names alongside a smattering of Kiwis in the game. If any sporting body made the right decision at the right time it was the NRL.
Definitely. What a brave sporty icon and legend. She truly became the Brand Ambassador for NRL and all other sports from 1989 song and then the National Anthem of sports Simply the best in 1993 to this date. ❤❤️
Simply the best thing that ever happened and the first and best marketing campaign done by ARL in 1993 with the best ever Rugby league Anthem to this date. Love you always Tina Turner. RIP legend. ❤️❤️
Thank you Tina, you were Simply The Best! Now I’m an old fart! The first vinyl ( look it up) album I ever bought was called ”River Deep Mountain High”, by Ike and Tina Turner, it was recorded in mono not stereo and it was her vocals that sold that album. Ike Turner was an OK guitarist but Tina was …… Well Tina!
When I watch her in her past concerts from around the world I see she was guided by the Only Creator of Everything what Exists...it is visible. Ave TINA !!
Oh u had to be there in 93 GF...Sydney just won the Olympics and its was a second GF Repeat...blustery Spring day.. loved it ..Tina had the crowd in her hand..and the saxophonist what a show he put on. that memory will live with me forever.
The greatest rock performance ever!!!! She started cold and with one minute she had the stadium with her!! I started really watching rugby league at that point! A great star, and I'm truly sad she's gone
Late Great Tina made Rugby League "Simply The Best" and moving forward, today is bigger than ever! Rugby League is the number one sport in my country Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬 and the Song: Simply the Best is ❤ by all. May she rest in peace 🙏
Yeah, how I remember that grand final with Tina. That was the last grand final my mother, Madge and me ever saw together and her favourite part was the sax player. Being an ex advertising man , that campaign was simply the best
Brilliant campaign - what a woman- what voice!! She had so much class - the world has lost a living legend she was just brilliant and us Aussies & the NRL were just so lucky to be part of her amazing legacy- I hope the NRL finds another living legend who is appropriate for a new campaign- ROCK not POP music!!!
Here in Porirua New Zealand during the 80s it was my grandfather that got me in the great sport on tv, but Tina Turner was the one that motivated me to get out and play league, exercise, be proud or myself and lift weights..............I was 6! 😂😂😂
The game of rugby league still needs legends in the same league as Tina Turner to market the game to the world.. RIEP Tina Turner. You were "Simply the Best!"
Matthew johns this is a GREAT tribute to the late Tina Turner by you and by the way Matthew you have really MATURED as a media personality throughout THESE years 💯 percent 👍

Getting Tina to help change the face of Rugby League & make it more appealing to the general public at that time really proved a masterstroke & we'll be forever grateful for her contribution...R.I.P Tina Turner

Massive MASSIVE influence. Tina almost inspired a type of mysticism surrounding league.
Good tribute by Matty. They were perfect songs and perfect ad campaigns. 90s was a time to be alive. RIP to the legendary Tina Turner

I'm an American and never knew Tina promoted rugby "down under" --- I was tickled to find about this hidden part of her legendary career!

That Voice was so iconic. What a merger between an American Powerhouse Singer and A rugby Leage code. Amazing.🎉
Simply the best thing that ever happened.

Well said mate.
Awesome that a beautiful, talented, smart woman can be held in such high regard by the game.
The old man was in the “what you get if what you see” ad… I watch it constantly 😂

no sport in the world has such an ICONIC song then "Simply the Best" for Rugby League

She was an absolute powerhouse. Such a random combination, Tina Turner and Rugby League but it worked amazing!
Canada loves Australia! And of course WE LOVE TINA TURNER!!❤❤❤

Those videos even reached South America, I remember them. She was so cool. 💕
I never knew about all of this. Very wild and cool.
😢 Americans didn't care about her after 2000. I am a Texan and she will always be a godess to me!!
This just shows how empty-headed the americans are, in general...
What a sweet interview. Thank you.
she should have a ''friend of league'' immortal spot in the hall of fame

Also they Aussies NRL was to get into USA 🇺🇸 supporting tough men playing tough sport 🏈 😂
This was quality
Surely this should just be the NRL theme song - every year!
NRL and super League should use 'the best' as this years song. Absolutely fitting.
Very jealous the Rugby league got Tina Turner while the AFL only got Meatloaf
Tina Turner is Historic.
Why is Tina an Inductee into the Hall of Fame?
Tina made Rugby League famous.
Induct Tina Turner.

She's been indicted into the hall of fame twice once with Ike and second by herself

How about this for another Tina Turner Ozzie connection:
When Brian Johnson auditioned for AC/DC, the first song they played was Nutbush City Limits.
Tina reviving Rugby League 🥰🏈💃🎵👑
Just Brilliant……had no idea! She was and is a Legend 🙏🏼👏🏻🙌🏻💖
What you get is what you see .... she promoted the game. What promotion has been effective since then either in rugby or AFL. She is a legend
