Good morning, Victor! Your reel breakdowns are by far the most technical on TH-cam, such an invaluable resource. Thank you, Victor!!!
I appreciate that buddy. I just swim in my little Ultralight world. I don't follow large tackle any more
Your review is absolutely exceptional with the break down, the measuring, the explanations, etc. thank you! I really like the new improvements. Very promising for Daiwa's future to see them keep looking for improvements, even when they already have an exceptional reel. 👏👏
Thank you sir, for not being lazy and leaving a comment!!
Love all the details and break down of what has been changed and improved. I ordered two of the 1000 and One of the 2500 and have about a week to go before they arrive. I think for the money they are as good as anyone could expect from what you are showing here. I agree also that the old bail looks better but really they both serve the same purpose so the new one doesn't take away from anything. Thank you for the time you spent breaking this down. Good stuff.
Thanks buddy!
I just received my 1000 Legalis and ❤ it! Thank you for doing the homework!!
You are the absolute best at discussing reel design! I've suscribed and am going back and watching all your videos. Two questions: What function does the rubber o-ring on the main grear perform, and what does the bearing in the back of the pinion gear sit in? Is it the back of the body cavity or behind that cavity?
the o-ring improves contact with side plate and bearing. The back bearing sits in a hole in the frame, just like in the revros, but in the revros it is the pinion sitting in the frame and here a bearing sits in the frame and the pinion sits in the bearing
Hi Victor! Great review. Yes, it's a huge difference in weight/design of the new rotor. What makes it a even bigger difference is comparing the new rotor to the much 1st gen air rotors. Thanks for your time!
Thanks buddy
Just got mine in and it is quality! Copped it on sale for $70 and it is going on my regular Presso!
Love the detailed review as always Vic!
thats the best UL combo in the world in terms of value
Quick tip Ifish drag grease is perfect for all threads for screws anywhere on reel
Ha! That's what i have been doing! They say don't put grease on the screws so they don't get loose, but for me, i want the second time i open the reel to open it without stress on the thread, or mangling the head of the screw. I just like to removes screws easy and until i lose one of them i'm gone keep putting grease, so its easy to On and Off
@@ifishcatfish great job 👍😎
Your first reviews of the Legalis LT 2017 was the reason I bought my very first one in 1000 size back in 2018. I added a 2000 and 3000 size in 2019 to my collection and now looking to add a 4000 reel and this new 2023 Legalis LT is exactly what I will be getting and again your review has done the job.
All three of my 2017 Legalis LT’s are still as smooth and tight as the day I first unboxed them. Used to be a Shimano fan but since getting that first Legalis I have not been bothered to look at Shimano again.
Daiwa is best under $100 currently, but i would never write Shimano off..
Good video Victor....Good that you have so much focus on the weight of the rotor, (and elsewhere) I got a shock when I tried my new Shimano Exsence C3000 MHG-A (Japan). You can really feel how much weight matters, but the handle is very heavy (26 grams), you can use one from shimano vanquish
Hi Victor! Is a 210 grams ,2000 size reel considered ultralight? Because if so - I may have a challenger and it is Tailwalk Speaky 2000.
I don't know if you can find Tailwalk products in the USA. It costs around 200 USD, but you said regardless of price. The reel feels and looks amazing. It will be great if you have the time, desire and possibility to take a look at the reel and share your thoughts.
I wish you all the best, sir!
Never heard of them. It's heavier than anything in my Buying Guide, but weight is actually not a limit for the Ultralight label. Size 1000 and 2000 is considered Ultralight.. I am not eager to spend 200 USD just to 'try it' though.. Kastking just sent me a $120 reel for review. If they send me one for review, i will review it, but will tell them the same thing i told Kastking - i will say whatever i want to say in the review, even though u sent me the reel for free
@@ifishcatfish They make mostly rods and their price/ quality ratio is really good. They dont't really have a budget line - only mid and high end products. I think that Speaky is their first spinning reel. Ofc you won't buy the reel just to review it,this would be ridiculous :) And your sincerity regarding the quality of the products which you review is one of the main reasons why we all are here with you imho:)))
Hi Victor, i'm a subscriber who loves your videos and I really appreciate the time and effort that you put into them. I'm a saltwater fisherman usually chasing larger reef fish and pelagic's so a bit different from your ultra light world - perhaps a small crossover with my estuary gear that runs 2000/2500 series reels. As an engineer of 35+ years, i just like watching them from a technical perspective ........ and i like your accent (I'm Australian). Just a note for your followers/readers on reel bodies. Sometimes the term 'plastic' is used and said in a negative manner. In high-end engineering applications (aerospace, piping, military structures, robotics) as well as sporting equipment, we use carbon fibre composite plastics which have mechanical properties far greater than any metal. Also, the terms strength and stiffness are often used interchangeably or incorrectly - in simple terms, strength is a measure of resistance to load or force and stiffness is a measure of resistance to deflection or deformation. Standard Carbon fibre has a stiffness (elastic modulus) about 10% higher than steel and so about 3x that of Aluminium, and a Tensile Strength about 6 to 7x that of steel - Aluminium has many alloys and tensile strength is completely dependent on the temper used but most popular is around 90MPa so standard carbon fibre about 35x that of Aluminium. You can also get high modulus, and high strength, carbon fibre which has 2x the stiffness of steel at about 1/2 the weight of aluminium. Given these high mechanical properties only low doses of carbon fibre are usually used to keep costs down. Lower-end applications such as tools, car parts, and sporting equipment (which includes spinning reels) composites are usually engineered so that they just have better stiffness to weight ratios than competing products - usually aluminium in the spinning reel world. Any low dose plain weave carbon fibre composite should have a higher stiffness to weight ratio than most commercial aluminium alloys so not difficult for any reel manufacturer to produce - if that is what Zaion V is supposed to be??? From the comparison at 4:00 we can all see that the support arm at the junction with the reel body has been significantly thickened geometrically so would have much greater stiffness even without changing the composite structure. As the weights are still the same as you measured, Daiwa have likely changed the composite to reduce the material density - and may have also reduced dimensions elsewhere. Would be interested in some data on Zaion V for sure.
good post, but remember that on the video i have 2017 model, and not the 2020. I did review the 2020 model in a nearly identical video and then sold it, due to it being in a blue color that i didn't appreciate. I believe the frame updates happened in 2020 and there were no frame updates in the material this year. Of course the frame is a little different due to different geometry inside the reel but it is hard to tell from that if there is a new material. At the end of the day, the 2020 model already had no flex (1) so the 2023 model is not upgrade in terms of flex, and the 2023 model is not any lighter (2) so we have no upgrade in terms of weight. Because of (1) and (2) i think it is safe to say that there is no frame upgrade, even if they did use a different material, because different would not mean upgrade.
@@ifishcatfishthanks for confirming mate. I saw your 2020 review with the thicker support arm but because they are not side by side in this video, couldn't tell if it had changed profile again or if the body had changed in any way. Agreed, different does not mean upgrade - as we have seen time and time again over the last 15yrs, some reels went backwards (generally not the cheaper reels though).
Hello Victor!
Thanks for these videos, I really find them helpful!
I would like to ask you a question about these "new" Daiwas. I have been using the old Daiwas for a long time. Now I am thinking about to retire them and buy a new '23 Legalis.
I saw Daiwa made the belt wire much more thinner to make the reel lighter. What do you think, is it still durable? It looks so fragile. I'm afraid, if I use it as normal (open it about 100 times a day) maybe it breaks or bend.
What is your opinion?
Here in Hungary, it is almost impossible to get any Daiwa parts (or you have to wait a half year to arrive) so if something is broken, better buy a new reel :(
Thank you!
the old bail was HOLLOW. Empty inside. Much more fragile. More elegant looking, but more fragile. The new bail is solid wire. U can't break it. U can bend it, but then u can bend it back. As far as bail goes, u don't even need to buy one. You can buy stainless steel wire and just bend it the same way. That said, there is no need to retire the old daiwas. The 2017 daiwas are still very competitive, only a little bit heavier.
Awesome Victor! Thank you for the review.
I just received this reel and it’s a great finesse reel. It feels like a Sahara to me. In a blind test I would think I’m holding a Shimano.
I know you said it shouldn’t bother anyone but for me the bail does. The thin wire and the “springy” audible click while opening the bail drives me nuts. I’m accustomed to Daiwa air bail and quiet open design. The only noise I like my reel making is drag clicks. Other than that it’s a fantastic reel!
Any recommendations on a similar Daiwa reel but with a hollow bail?
You can remove a spring inside the bail mechanism and will not click any more. I know how u feel but fish it a few months and come back and report to me again how u feel. U will see it will not bother u any more. It really is a 300 dollar reel in terms of finesse and performance
Well done Victor. This content is why we are loyal viewers of i_fish. Now if we had some occasional carp content again, it would be like the old days. 👍👍
I gota do that
Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick Vic!
As comprehensive of a review as you could ever imagine.
Those Zebco Lovin' Sons of #%@ actually improved the rotational mass by 12.5 grams. I agree, that relocated Shaft support is gnarly and those new spool cuts sound like a Harley Davidson reel. Plus, there's more bushing for the pushing and to boot, We can Shim it!! The only pimping I'll need to do is throw one of those high performance Japanese Samurai handles on my baby & I'll be ready to slay!!
Thanks for being so smart & God Bless!
Again great video. Now I have not had a legalis but the piscifun carbon x 1000 seems fairly comparable 20 dollars cheaper now I don’t know weight wise it says 5.5 ounces but I have not weighed it but the internals seem pretty close to each other.
Great explanation vic. Going to get a ultegra. Mainly for saltwater in Texas for trout redfish and flounder.
great choice
Thanks vic. I fish main ly saltwater. Looking for deep spool and dependable reel. Should I get the ultega c3000hg or c3000xg for trout and redfish?
never get HG or XG for ANYTHING. I don't want to know what application, don't ever buy that crap. Buy the normal models, no god deam c letters, just get the normal models
Thank you for all of the recommendations.
Its difficult to find a normal reel. Every reel has some type of letters in their model? You need to educate on us all types of models and the type of fishing it is best for. It is very confusing.
Thank you, Victor. I bought two of the '23 Daiwa Legalis LT 1000s today.
Hey Victor. Your right, the 23 legalis is an unbelievable reel for the price. It feels like a 300$ reel. I picked up a 5000, and compared to my Certates the gap is getting closer and closer. The airdrive really does make a difference.
Love this content! Can’t believe I missed the original upload. Any chance you will update your legalis family video since there is now a 23 version of the exceler and regal? I’d love to see what if any difference’s there are now
im working on 24 UL reel buying guide right now, but i haven't reviewed the exceller yet. Do u want to send me yours?
This is an incredible video. Thank you!
Very informative videos you do. Truly enjoy watching.
Hi. Would you still select the Shimano Sahara 2500\3000 over the new 23 Legalis for bass? Thank you for an excellent review.
You know... for myself i would still go with Legalis because i fish with 3 lb line for bass, and i do not use much force.. But for traditional bass fishing, jacking up hooksets and 8-10 lb line... yes, i still recommend Sahara for that. Both frame and gears are stronger.
My apologies. The question was related, so I replayed it to another comment. The jig itself does not create resistance, but it needs to be fished occasionally with the rod. And that causes shocks that are transmitted to the rotor and gears. That's what they told me. Thanks for the answer, I'm calmer now!
Yes, the weight of the jig is also an issue, just like u described, but not as big as driving a wobbler. If u just fish it occasionally, then u don't need 2500 i would say.
@@ifishcatfish taknk you so much!
Victor. What accent region do I detect? Thanks. Love your videos!
Bulgaria
I’d have to say I was quick to try a heap of the Off brand reels but there is no amount of bearings or drag pressure that can defeat attention to detail and refinement! Something developed over many decades! I’ve the opinion that you get what you pay for!
Inside the same brand u get what u pay for. But between brands value can vary a lot. This reel costs $65 and is better than a $300 abu
@@ifishcatfish yep new budget daiwa is Going in the right direction! It’s the early high end features finding their way into budget reels such as the ‘o’ ring dampener and main shaft seal and weight reduction that makes me want to go buy more reel’s thanks mate for these in depth vids!
The Japanese love America. As an American, I LOVE the Japanese! Thank you for taking your craft seriously and trying to perfect your work. Also, let me say that TH-cam is allowing market forces to impact industry more immediately and this channel is educating customers to demand from suppliers higher quality at lower prices! Thank you.
Thanks D
Absolutely thorough review man! I will see if the new exceler is exactly the same as the JDM legalis. Daiwa has increased it's dominance the budget ultralight war!
Nice review Victor, still my go to reel.
Zaion V is *stiffer* than the previous material, not lighter. It's used to reduce the handle flex that the previous models had. But it does weigh the same.
But if it is stronger, they can make it thinner and still save weight. Also, it is made by adding carbon. How do u add carbon, which is weighs nothing, but do not reduce weight? I am just thinking logically but i don't know for sure. Do u have a legitimate source for this? Can i read something?
Bravo once more!
Awesome review. Thank you.
Hello Victor! Looking to buy this Legalis LT but am having a hard time choosing between the 1000S and 2000S-P. Mainly going to use it for spoons, spinners, and mini jigs. Also am wondering if the line capacity between the 2 is a big difference as I plan on using 4lb fluro line. Thank you!
whatever you chose, forget about line capacity. It doesn't matter for ultralight fishing. All spools hold more line than what u need anyway.
Thank you Victor! Always looking forward to your next video. Ordered my Legalis 2000S-P last week. Hope it arrives tomorrow. Cant wait to test it here in the South of Philippines. God bless you always!
Hope you enjoy it!
Amazing, well thought out and in-depth review. I wish we had more content like this on youtube instead of the usual "taking it out of the box, spinning it and saying it's good or bad" kind of videos.
On another note one thing came up in my mind about the new LT reel range.
Not so much in the ultralight aspect, but in general spin fishing here in europe i have heard of several reports that people have found reels like the vanford and vanquish to not be as good at fishing with hard lures or lures with large resistance because of the MGL rotor as it has less rotational momentum due to the rotor's decreased weight, therefore making the retrieve of such lures less comfortable.
Coincidentally i find it odd that Daiwa has decided to add this similar style of rotor to all of their reels as it might be a deal breaker for certain customers.
What do you think?
I think someone who is confused spread rumors that he shouldnt be spreading. Heavy rotor will offer u zero help for heavy lures, it will actually make reeling heavier. If they feel too much resistsnce its probably because they ate casting huge lures with tiny reels and are overloading them. The only downside if light rotor is that if u tighten the drag and overload the reel the rotor can just snap. But as long as u dont break it, it will SAVE you your energy in all cases
Victor my guess is the gear speed has a bit to do with fatigue. I know that when I was buying a reel for a Muskie rod I looked at an 8:3:1 gear speed on the reel and I read that becasue it is so fast, it actually make the bait harder to move through the water due to resistance. I ended up getting a lower gear just to help with fatigue@@ifishcatfish
Could be. I personally never felt the difference, but i thought it was an interesting observation soke people make.
I totally agree that the reel either helps or hinders lure retrieve / action. However, action on the lure is a combined factor of reel, rod and line all working at the same time. That's where the term "a balanced rig" has meaning. When the reel matches the rod, with the correct line and lure type / size / style and you hit that sweet spot where all the "parts" of the system compliment with each other, it works wonders.
@@mildmanneredmercifulmouse1839 how can a reel ‘help’? In all cases u have to overcome the resistance of the lure plus resistance from spinning the rotor. In all cases, no exceptions. Think about that again.
I did not tried legalis but after this video I will consoder buying it for sure! Best reel I have ever used is mitchell mx9 and i cant find any video on youtube about disassembling it.Also I found pflueger patriarch reel thas is 100% same looking from outside but I don't know is there any difference from inside
All mitchel reels are FAR inferior to this reel. Absolutely everything is inferior: weight, resistance, inertia, balance, finesse, everything
The knob on my 2023 Exceler is not removable so I think in most countries 2023 Legalis doesn't have a removable knob. Good video, thank you!
really sux.. daiwa thinks that in europe and usa people don't care about that and puts a removable knob only on japanese models
Lion Sport makes some really good budget reels the prestige spin is quite solid.
No.
Damnit... Lol... I shouldn't have clicked on your video... Well yet at least, as I'm tearing down the legalis this week... I wanted to see everything for the first time on the bench... Daiwa is taking no prisoners with this generation of reels... I like you, am scratching my head over what zaion v is... The only thing in writing I can see is that it's a "more machineable" carbon composite. Awesome video!
Zero weight difference below rotor. It cant have much zaion. Im thinking whos gona buy their luvias now and all of that kage crap and whatnot. It will eat up some sales from more expensive reels
come on tackleadvisors we r waiting... 🙂🙂🙂🙂
@TackleAdvisors i have gotten 100 requests for Stradic FL but i don't want to buy this reel.. it is not UL and i have no use for it..
Thanks for this video, it was very interesting to see the differences! 👍
Nice job Victor
Does the new spool fit the old rotor and vise versa? It would be handy to use the old one as a spare. Great video. Thanks.
no, it does not, sorry
Thx for a detailed review
My pleasure!
Do you think the old thicker bail is interchangeable with the new rotor. I'd be curious as to the weight difference of the older bail vs the new one once removed. 🤔
Definitely not interchangeable.
Just looking at the screw placement on the new model, the screw is fixed from inside unlike on the older models.
It would be great if you could swap them, but i honestly think they made them non-interchangeable on purpose.😢
Darn, would've been cool.
Not interchangeable
In 4:00 those metal rods that support the oscillating shaft they are on the revros 2015 model, both upper and lower of the revros 2015 frame have that, thus the shaft is steady when oscillating, and yup the bearing on the pinion gear in the revros 2015 is only one thus it is feeling gritty when turning it.
I hope daiwa will upgrade that Anti reverse clutch on 10:00 because that anti reverse easily corrodes under saltwater conditions, unlike the KOYO branded anti reverse clutch that the higher models use (btw it is blue green in color, on lower models its black)
If they upgrade the anti reverse bearing on the lower models and removing the reverse switch below that reel, that reel will be a great reel.
Btw the bail is airdrive design, its the same as the saltiga and lexa Lt 2023 model, i think they are trickling down the techs from higher models because on shimano Ultegra they have done that, what technology the higher model have they are using it on budget reels.
Shimano is reluctant to introduce tech from over 200$ reels into sub 100$ reels though. But daiwa did. I don't think the ARB needs upgrade. This reel has no seals and u are not supposed to use in the salt. U can upgrade everything but that only increases cost. The reason this reel is amazing in because it is so good and still under 100$. The bearing is perfect for freshwater in my opinion. U can buy the Fuego if u want to fish salt and the ARB will have protection.
I love this review ❤😊
Hello Victor! Thank you for the info. Do you remember if there is any difference between 4000c and 5000c, except the size of the spool? The size of the main gear, or something like that? Thank you.
generally for Daiwa and shimano 4000 and 5000 is same body, different spool
@@ifishcatfish thank you so much.
Great video! Fantastic comparison between old and new. With the 23 Legalis new screw-on handle, any reason for Daiwa to continue producing the Exceler?
Im sure it will have some extra seal or something..
Really enjoying your videos and wondering what size you’d recommend for a 6’ lamiglas x11 light4-8lb. I like the idea of the lower gear ratio you talk about but wondering if I’d be better with a 1000 size for most line
Does the 1000 have more line? I never check for stuff like that. Not sure how
Mich line u need but i would orefer 2000 for that rod because of the L power..
Not more but it seems closer to the recommended line weight of the rod? I’m very new to fishing tho so I’m not sure. I intend on using 4-6 lb line. And the 2000 line capacity shows 6-8 lb where the 1000 shows 2-8lb thanks for the response!
@@browsinmusic 6 lb is bass fishing territory. I don't recommend more than 4 lb for ultralight fishing. I know you are afraid, but people fish with 1 lb. If u plan on using it for bass, then i would go with 2500 size reel, to get a little stronger body and gears. Otherwise.. i prefer 2000 but if u get 1000 its not a big deal, its hard to tell the difference
To keep your humble, they may have taken your opinions in their remake but judging but the amount of incremental improvements seen, I would say they took a top to bottom look at this reel and the drag part was just part of the review.
well of course.. there is nothing in my opinions that would help an engineer.. My opinions are about user experience
So what will now be the difference between Legalis & Exceler, when the Legalis got the steady handle + even the changeable knobs ? 🤔 Knob of the first Gen Fuego LT was changeable as well, but with the second Gen, they cut this feature.
I actually dont know that and i dont want to buy exceller too. I will ask someone to send me one.
@@ifishcatfish thx, because this will be interesting.I haven't checked their homepage in a while ,are the new gen exceler and fuego even announced yet ? So far i also haven't seen anything on the daiwa Japan channel, except the legalis '23 .
I guess this is some kind of a forerunner for the new LT family.
Anyway, thx a lot for this detailed vid !!!
the jdm legalis and exceler lt will NOT be sold in the same market thats for sure
@@danielwutfisho How do u know that? I know 4.8 gear ratio will not be offered in USA because everyone is Hating on the slow gear ratios here but it's more of a guess... i don't really know for sure...
@@ifishcatfish because already in the australian market we have 23 pin through legalis, differentiated from 23 exceler lt. So I predict this will also be applied to global market. Exceler might have few upgrades though who knows...
Very comprehensive review! New subscriber here! I'm trying to get back into fishing after a 30 year lapse. I finally have time in my older years to get back out there. Originally I was going to purchase a Legalis 1000D until I watched your review and you suggested getting the 2000 with the slower gear ratio. Does the gear ratio really make all that much of a difference when you're fishing for panfish? Keep in mind there is a $30 price difference between the 1000 and the 2000 you recommended. Thanks in advance... Dan
if it doesn't make a differnce, get the slow gear ratio anyway.. Fast gear ratio kills the joy of fishing
@@ifishcatfish Thank you Victor!

Awesome review I'm getting the new diawa legalis on black Friday 👍🐟
Perch there yet?
Victor, I have been seeing the Fuego discounted to $80 by a number of retailers. Do you feel that the new Legalis is a better reel at pretty much the same price point?
for freshwater - yes
Thanks for the video. Just cost me 80$ because i instantly wemt and ordered o ne 😅. Nice breakdown. Lookimg forward to some videos of you fishing with it.

@@ifishcatfish yes I stay in chicago and also don't have a boat. But she it will be ready for some fishing when spring rolls around.
Really good work. There ist one question left, wat ist now the difference between the legalis and exceler? In the past it was only the screw in handle of the exceler..and now?
now the exceller is a completely different reel. But thats for another video..
Thanks you for your answer. I'm excite to see the Video about the new Exceler. Maybe you can Tell some Side notes to the 23 legalis and 23 fuego. Thanks you for your work and videos🎉
I have a hunch -- that the new redesigned Exceler maybe be the same as the Legalis LT - but I'm still researching this ... that the new Exceler is the USA version of the 23 Legalis LT @@ToboHerzo85
Is there a shim on the large bearing on the Piniongear? I'm missing one, but there is one on the exploded view from Daiwa and I have the feeling that the fishing reel runs quite rough.
do u want me to open my reel to tell u?
@ifishcatfish No, it would be too time-consuming to open the roll, but it would be interesting to know whether there is a shim washer there
Do you plan on posting a 2023 ultralight reel and rod Buyer's Guide like you did last year around this time?
i still haven't decided. If i do, it will be shorted, and it will be rods and reels combined
Hi sir can i know the size of Daiwas Pinion gear bearing
Hey there ifish, was wondering if you’ve tested ultralight snap swivels with spoons? I’ve just been getting more into JDM/micro spoons since I got the Carabus. If you get a chance, could you give your opinion on JDM telescopic rods? I’ve been looking at the major craft trapara 6’ UL versus the Daiwa triple BBB 6’10” light….i plan on doing a lot of backpacking and I’m looking for a solid solution!
no, i don't fish spoons almost at all... i think there are enough rings and swivels for spoons already..
What about new Regal 2024? Does it have the new reworked internals as the Legalis 2023? I can have it for amazing price during blac friday sale, so tempted. Thank you
i haven't seen that reel. I should, but i haven't
Hello -- your channel is great ... here's the question ...
I hear that the Daiwa 23 Exceler is the U.S. version of the rebuilt Legalis LT of which you
just tore apart recently -- do you have any knowledge of this ... as I find the 23 Exceler
better looking.
Please advise when you have time.
On the link that you sent me, daiwa usa, scroll down to where frame is. Then open my video and go to where i show the open frames. Then compare. Let me know what you think.
Point taken.
Servus! Informative video as usual especially for "fishing normies" like myself that enjoy tackle but maybe cannot find the time or ressources to go in depth into it.
I like to know what you think about the Bullzen Zantetsu CX 800. It's JDM gear for UL with good availability here in the EU for 140 Euros. I don't know about the looks.. since it's like a monster energy drink can as reel but goes Ok with my Carabus extreme. Cheers Victor!
i have no idea what that is, but there is only a few companies in the world that make fishing reels. This mumbo-jumbo of a name is just a label that they put on top of reels that are made by okuma in china or by the korean factory that makes abu and lews reels and a bunch of others. If you want to buy 5 000 chinese reels, u can call a chinese factory and they will make some ebay garbage and will put your label on it, but good luck selling that when legalis is so cheap and so good.
Excellent vid!

I recommend starting from the 60 dollar legalis or sahara..
Another brilliant review.
Victor, for someone new to ultralight fishing would you recommend a 1000 size or 2000 size reel of the 23 Legalis LT to pair with a 5ft Daiwa Presso for small creek fishing?
there is virtually no difference. Whichever is cheaper.. If you are putting it on the $60 presso, the 2000 will look a little better. If you are buying the $300 presso, then the 1000 will look a little better
@@ifishcatfish it is just the $60 presso, do you recommend the lower gear ratio 2000 size or the higher gear ratio for creek fishing crappie/trout? I’ve been trying to watch a lot of your videos and do research but I’m having trouble deciding
@@landonfraser5954 low gear ratio for everything, no exceptions

I've got a Legalis 2000sh, must be 10 years old. Is. it worth upgrading to the new legalis model? The handle has some side to side play, i don't remember if it originally had it.
it is VERY MUCH worth upgrading. Dont buy high gear ratios though!
Why not? May I ask?
What size and model do you recommend? I see a few different ones with different gear ratios. Looking to start and would love your opinion
1000 and 2000. Lowest gear ratio you find

I_fish I'm looking for a new spinning reel. Shimano miraval or a legalis lt. What are the pros and cons. Do you have a video comparing them?
well, shimano miravel costs twice as much as the legalis, but otherwise they are pretty similar quality and feel
@ifishcatfish I'm seeing the legalis 23 model for 109.00 on Amazon the miravel for 99.00
@@K.D.32 well if thats ur options then go for miravel, i guess..
I like your videos victor and I think you can help me The new air rotor design has ,to me has a very difficult line roller to reassemble. it has completely stumped me those 2 little washers and hooked on bail are crazy difficult to reassemble. I bought mine from the amazon japanese store and it showed up with no schematic. I cannot find it anywhere.
I really like this rotor and bail but if I can't service the line roller then that is abig problem
i have a video of how to service that. Somewhere on my channel
Got mine in today, feels solid....very similar feel to my Ultegra. Does the reverse switch ever wear out? Price on the 2k size like you have went up bout $30.00 now $103.95
I would get the 1000 size then.
Hey Victor, I just picked up a 2000S-P just like you have to pair with the 6' Crappie Maxx Pro I just bought.
I noticed the grease inside the notches of the spool. I am guessing that is not stock since mine is not grease, I could be wrong.
Any reason for that? Is it to smoothen out the drag clicker and dampen out the pinginess?
@@JustDrinkingCawfee yes. Grese will make it quieter. Up to u
Is the new Legalis you tested made in China,Vietnam or Japan? Thank you
I dont even know but it is sold only in Japan, it seems. Nobody else has it.
Can you do a comparison of 24 Regal and 23 Legalis. Is the 24 Regal just 23 Legalis minus the screw in handle?
buy one and send it to me and i will do it. I don't know what the differences are. I opened the old one and compared them, but daiwa likes to change things
Hello VIctor, thanks for the info . What do you think about TSURINOYA Ranger 1000S 156g ? Thank you!
i put all chinese reels in the same bucket. If u watch my latest videos about Kastking - thats my opinion about all chinese reels. They have some interesting features but they NEVER feel like daiwa and shimano..
I got one in 4000 size. Generally great reel but the amount of play the two bearings supporting main gear have in their housing is unbelievable . Now wondering how I can improve that?
you can't. forget about it and enjoy the reel
@@ifishcatfish thanks. BTW, why don't you make any reviews of ABU reels? I got few of them and they are ok, I especially like Winch with low gear ratio, great look and it is very smooth.

No. Fuego for saltwater
@@ifishcatfishthank you very much.i have one fuego 2021 and its sealed.

Which one would you recommend for perch fishing, the legalis or sahara? Thanks anyway
just as good. Go by the color that matches ur rod better
@ifishcatfish Thanks Victor! Legalis size 2000 it is then.
Victor I know you have a grease on your page that you sell. For the kit you are going to list, do you put a tad bit of grease on the bushings before instaling or just swap them out?
No grease there. Will add resistance and dirt later willnstick to grease
That makes sense. I didn't think that through very well. Brother today is going to be a good day! My reels and all the different Varvias line I bought to try are showing they will arrive by 8:00pm @@ifishcatfish

Is there two types of colors? You have the gold one...but I also see blue model.🤔
3 generations. First one has black handle. Second one has silver handle. Newest one has gold handle.
@ifishcatfish But I look on their web page and it's has a blue spool and has a chrome handle. I don't get it
I already told you. Just get it.
@@ifishcatfish Relax vic...Im going by what ya said. And Im just saying there is one with a blue spool and a chrome handle. I thought maybe you knew something about that.
you are still not getting it. You said 'i don't get it'. I explained to you that the first Legalis, that came out in 2017, had black handle. The second generation Legalis, which came out in 2020, was blue. The newest Legalis, that just came out, has a gold handle. WHat you are looking is the old reel. I don't care what pages you are looking, but it is the 2020 model. Hopefully now you got it, because you are out of questions
Would you happen to know if I can put a different spool on a 23 Legalis lt 2500shx a 2500d spare spool?
all 2500 and 3000 size spools should be interchangeable. The letters don't matter. Capacity will be different, sometimes drag disks inside are different, but they will fit and work fine.
Bought a Nasci this year and could not put it down. Maybe this could be a challenger.
What do u fosh for?
Mainly bass and pike
@@darcywood4637 then u dont even need Nasci. Sahara is absolutely same reel
I've found out that the 23 global Legalis models have the old handle type.
Only the Japanese models have a screw-in handle.
It appears that the 23 Japanese Legalis is identical to the 23 global Exceller.
What a shame... I really wanted that new handle.
Very good information - thank you!
Have you tried the Kastking kestrel 1000 size spinning reel, at under £50 it is very hard to falt.
Kastking called
Memto ask me if inwant to review that reel. I told them yes but i will saynwhatninwantnicen if its critical. Never heard from them.
But i heard feom subscribers inertia and smoothness and not on par with daiwa.
Hello, do you recommend 2023 legalis in size 3000 for pike or zander fishing? Or should i choose shimano stradic fm for durability and hold that for years? I have 2020 legalis in size 2000 but i dont know if 3000 size can do the job with big pike or zander. Thank you!
both reels with fight a pike or zander with no problems, as those fish don't fight good like carp. The question is how do u fish. If u fish on the bottom and u watch it, then legalis will be enough and its so light i would prefer it. But if you are CASTING heavy lures for these fish, then i would go to stradic. It is the casting of heavy lures that kills the gears, and not the fish. U catch 2-3 fish per day, and they rarely pull much drag... But u cast these big lures hundreds of times per day and that wears out everything
@@ifishcatfish yes, i would fish on the bottom and will cast jigs like 20-30grams because i will fish on danube river, so Stradic would be better. Thank you 😁
@@ifishcatfish Hello Viktor, I have a question. For UL/L, I usually use small soft silicone lures. I also use small wobblers. But sometimes when I need a longer cast, I use small metal jigs of 10 grams. Do you think that even such small light jigs can harm a Legalis/Fuego 2000 LT reel?
How much do you think is the maximum for a metal jig that won't hurt the reel? 10 grams? 15 grams?
Thank you for your reply. I love your videos, your precision, refinement and dedication to everything you do!
@@ivanvedris9636 First of all - don't reply to other people's comments. Nobody likes that!
You are NOT going to HURT a 2000 size Legalis with a 10 gram jig right away! If you do it infrequently then don't worry about it. If you do it often, i would get L power rod and 2500 size Sahara, which has stronger body and gears than the Legalis. Legalis is a FINESSE instrument, not a power instrument. What is more important is the resistance while you are reeling. 10 gram jig doesn't make much resistance, but 10 gram wobbler will have a lot of resistance.
Mine should be here Tuesday.
Genuine question Victor. I have the 2000s-p with shallow spool/4.8:1 gear ratio. I was wanting to get the new Vansford 2000 for an upgrade on my favorite rod.
The new Vansford has a 6.0:1 gear ratio and deeper spool. Would it be worth it or should I just keep this?
Also when are you going to release your own rod?
there is a 2000 model with 5:0 to 1 and shallow spool.
@@ifishcatfish is it worth buying over legalis
@@ULFISHGETTER of course.. there is no comparison. Vanford is one reel that Legalis can't mess with. Legalis is better than any other brands of reels, but can't compare with high end daiwa and shimano reels. They have carbon frame, machine cut aluminum gears, more bearings, everything is better
@@ifishcatfish would you still rank the Vansford as the best reel in the high price category?
Obvi it can’t compete with the money is no option category.
@@ULFISHGETTER if u buy from japan its 200. FOr that price, yes. Otherwise the Daiwa Presso is same level, but more expensive
Hi, do you think 21 Freams is a step up compared to 23 Legalis and is it suitable for salt water ?
worse, it has the old rotor
Thanks! What reel would you recommend for seashore spinning considering the fact that 23 legalis is not for salt water .
The pinion? on the right actually looked tapered vs the one on the left?
tapered pinion?? That would require some seriously crazy gear geometry : )
Hello Victor! Great review as always! May I ask for your advice please? I'm looking forward to buying a new reel for a rod that I recently got. It's not really an ultralight as it's 0-8 grams. It's Atec Crazee Ajimeba and I can put a link later if it's ok and if needed. I have never fished so light as I was mainly targeting bigger species thus I can't really decide 1. Reel size and 2. Reel model. I got the rod for about 100 USD and the reel should be roughly same price. I would instantly get the 2023 Legalis as I already have the old model and I love it,but I want to use it for sea fishing as well. I have used my old Legalis for light sea fishing a few times and it didn't have issues yet.Do you think the 2023 will survive the sea or I should go for the 2023 Fuego? Is the new Fuego just a Legalis with magsealed again?( I know how much you hate it). And lastly - 1000,2000 or 2500 size? Sorry for the long comment and thank you in advance!!
if the rod is L power and u fish Saltwater, i would go with 2500 size because in saltwater it is very often u tangle with something big. And u don't want to retrieve 5-6 gram lure with 1000 size body (which is also in 2000 size reel).
As far as models, if that is your price range, your choice is between Fuego and Nasci. Nasci is a bit heavier, but also stronger and more durable. I would go Nasci because of saltwater.. , don't worry about the few extra grams
@@ifishcatfish Thank you for the prompt response! I actually have a 2500 Nasci, but it's a very old model. I have it for probably 10 years now. It has been serviced only once, and only after and because an unexpected wave took my bag, my rod etc while I was having my lunch:))) It's not as smooth as it once was ofc,but after the beating it has taken it still works quite fine. I was thinking about Nasci,it just seemed a bit heavy. The weight of the rod is 80gr and I wanted a reel less than 200 gr. Anyway, there is still some time until the season here starts and I'll just take the rod to a store and play with a few reels until I feel which one is the right one. Thank you once again and have a great weekend!
@@bozpasev2834 the new Nasci is amazing, its like the old twinpower. Also 80 gram is not a light rod.. Fuego is also nice but has cheaper gears, frame not as strong, and difficult to open and service with that stupid magseal
I was just checking the prices online at a local shop. The Nasci 2500 FC 2021 is a bit less than 100 USD. If I want a lighter reel I have to double my budget and get a Vanford . There is a 60 grams difference in the same size. I have fished with a 4000 size Vanford of a friend of mine and I don't like it. We go together with the boat jigging for Zander(walleye in the USA), and I have tried the reel many times as I was thinking of buying one. It may be just me being picky(my friend likes the reel very much), but I finally bought the new Ultegra which is way smoother imho. In those days when I get 1 fish or none at all but I keep turning the handle all the time I don't want that "grindy sandy feeling" which you mentioned in one of your videos. Also a lot of people complain about the Vanford behavior when used in saltwater. I remember you said that it's a matter of luck with the Vanford - one is great and one is grindy. If I manage to find a good Vanford somewhere do you think it's worth spending more than twice money?
The problem I have in purchasing is that most sellers don't give the year. The Daiwa store on Amazon does but they want $98.00 for the 2000S-P.
everyone raised the price on that model just now. After my initial impressions that model pretty much ran out of stock everywhere, including in the Japanese stores that ship here. When daiwa makes more from this model price will come down
@@ifishcatfishLegalis looks heaps good for budget anglers, but I won't be upgrading my luvias lt anytime soon. Can I ask if the side cap has a o ring seal?
@@danielwutfisho I removed it.. i was afraid it adds resistance : ). Luvias is still better than Legalis in everyting except drag SOUND.

Victor I’m sorry to beg a favour, but as a Daiwa and JDM Tackle expert do you know anything about the Daiwa Iprimi 1003 reel? - I sent mine to a reel servicer who lost the bail trip lever... I’ve tried the retailer and Daiwa but no one can/will help me find a spare. It’s now scrap unless I can find a part.
not familiar with that reel, but usually u can flip the bail by hand and fish just fine. If it was me, i would remove the bail trip from all reels, and force people to flip it by hand. You are damaging your gears every time u use the bail trip. But if you can't even assemble the reel, i would recommend buying some junk from ebay, and using that that one part. I am not familiar with that reel, but all reels in that price range and same year will have bail trip
