      It’s all drivers not just truck drivers. It’s just more dangerous when 18 wheelers r involved. I have 2 commend that 1 truck driver for not hitting anyone even though he got hit. I drove 18 wheelers during blizzards and whiteout conditions during my cross country driving days. We slowed down for the visibility and road condition even though 1 time north of Denver I didn’t know that I-25 was icy. I stopped normal even though I was empty,but I couldn’t move at first because it was slick. The next morning I saw cars all over the place even upside down,but not one 18 wheeler wrecked.

    I always drive in the number 3/slow lane on the 400 series highways. And if I ever come upon a situation like this, my plan is to immediately drive off as far into the field on the right hand side as I can. Then, if I feel that I am still too close to the roadway (in case a transport also veers off to the right side), I plan to get out of my vehicle as quickly as possible and book it (on foot) even further into the field!

      Conditions can change in seconds, you’ll be fine doing 70mph and then 1/8 of a mile later 30mph is now the maximum speed you can go, how do you achieve slowing down on what is now ice when it had been perfectly fine black top before? Most people will slam on their brakes and lose control, you have to let off the gas and not use the brakes, letting wind resistance slow you down. Had I been going any slower initially, I wouldn’t have felt the initial loss of traction and likely would have joined the pile farther ahead.

    My opinion as a Canadian with 20+ years driving experience, many of them with 40k km annually : this may seem way too fast, especially for some who haven’t heard of snow tires. It’s evidently too fast since there was a pileup, but not for most cars, since the cam car managed to stop way ahead of the danger. The problem for the past ten or so years comes mainly from the truck drivers. So many of them drive like terrorists in bad weather, passing people in the powdery snow turning day into whiteout conditions, pushing cars off the road, at maniac speeds, tailgating in the right lane if there’s even the slightest of downgrades, tailgating in the left lane in a snowstorm. This is exactly what we see here : a bunch of moronic truck drivers not even caring to turn their cb radios in very slippery conditions (I was on the road that day about 200km to the northeast) and not carelessly maintaining 110 km/h with full loads. There must have been serious injuries with this pileup, I hope no one was killed. Poor fellow on the shoulder just standing there with no clue of the danger he’s in.

    • @ChrisPhilipSquires
      @ChrisPhilipSquires  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Unless... in this case moving to the left was the safest thing to do. As evidenced by the vehicles in the left doing much better. Every situation isn't the same. Me and the cars by me who came up to the accident waited and tried to figure out the best place to go. Then we kept seeing trucks coming up in the right lane - no one was driving in the left lane as it wasn't clear at all. You can see him move over in front of me. After multiple trucks came up the right lane and crashed, the left was the safe place to be for sure. I was in the left and neither me nor my car has a mark. Same with the vehicles in the left ahead and behind me. Trucks and vehicles on the right were destroyed. Watched a team of firemen cut a guy out of a truck. Trucks on the right shoulder were flipped over and destroyed. So I get what you are saying but in THIS CASE you couldn't be more wrong.

      @@playdiscgolf1546 there are a ton of reasons why trucks go faster in these conditions. If the roads are slick but straight there’s no concern if you don’t have to stop. In bad visibility it is not recommended to go slow on the roads, your tail lights get covered in snow so no one can see them and going slow can cause someone to rear end you and start a big pileup. Best to go a reasonable speed and stay off the brakes.
      But even if you’re going a reasonable speed for the conditions, like the oversize load in this video, it is nearly impossible to stop a huge vehicle on ice.
      The biggest problem in the industry these days is CB radios. If everyone had a CB radio installed and turned on in their cab these situations wouldn’t happen. If the government really wants a solution to situations like this, they would make it mandatory for big trucks to have a CB radio installed in their truck and turned on while driving.
