    I want to address the "why didn't you warn people" critics on this video. There are several reasons why this is a completely unreasonable thing to expect me to do. First, of all, these videos are shot during winter storms when roads and bridges are icy across multiple states. Authorities and DOT crews are well aware of the conditions, in fact, you can see plows working during my videos. Furthermore, police officers have told me to stop trying to warn drivers roadside. Their vehicles with bright flashing lights are often hit by out of control cars and trucks. Do you get winter weather (ice and snow) where you live? I'm assuming then, if you are one of those who think that it is somehow effective or advisable for civilians to be waving down drivers/putting up signs on the side of a dangerously icy road, that YOU do this where you live during winter storms? If not, then why do you expect ANYONE to do it, especially TV cameramen out doing their jobs? Can you cite one example of where you've seen this civilian "roadside warning" during winter storms being performed and it being effective? Ask what law enforcement and EMS personnel think of this idea, when their big vehicles with bright flashing lights are routinely hit by out of control drivers. The "why don't you warn" idea is a knee-jerk one by people who aren't at all thinking about what they are saying. Furthermore, there are videos on my channel that show me warning drivers during bridge icing in the South - one of those rare times that it had even a remote chance of working. And even then, I could not get people to notice me unless I stepped into the road IN FRONT OF THEM, frantically waving. Police officers on the scene told me to NOT to do it. I have spent 9 years on the icyroadsafety.com site trying to educate and warn the driving public AHEAD OF TIME. It's just incredible how some think I should put my life on the line along icy roads in a futile attempt to prevent a couple of fender benders. If you think that this roadside warning is something that should be done, then I expect YOU to try doing it yourself in your neighborhood during the next winter storm - then tell me how it went for you. I would also like you to ask any police officer or first responder what they think of your actions.

      In our area we have signs stating "Bridges Freeze Before Roadway" and I assume that most places that normally have slick roads to have the same signs. But maybe some areas don't (where winter weather is not problematic for drivers). Thanks for trying to educate people thru your channel!

      @@TRDang1 -- I haven't had a rear-wheel-drive vehicle as my own daily driver since 1991. Ha! I like small cars, with front-wheel-drive. The same over-steer and under-steer principles of physics apply, and I'm not convinced that either pulling or pushing the weight of the car in a winter slide has an advantage over the other. It's all about the 'intangible forces' of the moment combined with whatever skill and calm reaction a driver can command in a crisis. I think that 4WD and variants of All-Wheel-Drive have *_definitely_* made people complacent and too assured. I work with a guy who drives an Audi that's a few years old, and he says "I just flip on Traction Control and the car basically drives itself." This is a guy who's used to Northeast winters.
      EDIT: That Audi is a 6-speed manual, too. Ha!

    Amazed at how many idiots drive in winter weather, rain, including white outs with NO LIGHTS ON! Then if you do spin out, put your flashers on and try and get off on the side or shoulder if able to. And just SLOW DOWN! Hats off to the people who reacted cool under pressure like I saw a number of truck drivers do . Great videos, I think watching these can actually help people to see how and what to do and NOT DO when encountering these road conditions. 27 years of driving truck, majority of that pulling doubles , has taught me a lot with just doing some of the small things, small adjustments in speed,braking,acceleration to maintain control and handle when you do lose traction. Black ice is definitely the worst ! Stay safe out there people, getting ready to see what this winter has to offer 😅

    I grew up driving in ice and snow but moved to Washington DC area for a decade. Drivers from warm places all over the country and world come there and put on a master class of what not to do in a car on slippery roads. My favorites are steering into the skid but simultaneously locking the brakes, making any steering input useless. The big spin outs in these videos always have three brake lights on, and the recoveries frequently do not. Another is slipping on an icy incline and flooring it (because faster = more traction right?) then watching the car go sideways into a parked car or roadside obstacle.

    I found the car spinning out in snow compilation very scary. The moment at 5:38 was particularly intense, as the car not only spun out of control but also blew up into flames. It's a reminder of just how dangerous driving in snowy conditions can be and how important it is to take precautions and drive slower in such conditions. It's a miracle that the driver managed to get out alive of control but also blew up. It's a good reminder of the dangers of driving in snowy conditions and the importance of being cautious and prepared. It's fortunate that there were no apparent injuries from the explosion, but it's still a sobering reminder of how quickly things can go wrong on the road. "And now, here we see the common idiot driver, 'automobile idioticus incredibli', in its natural habitat.
      "Watch, as this incredibly stupid creature hurtles along at insane speeds, totally oblivious to the changing road conditions until suddenly, without warning, it slides and crashes into road signs, barriers and even other creatures, knocking pieces of both its own and its fellow creature's carapace flying, often amid spectacular showers of sparks.
      "These creatures seem incapable of rational thought since, when faced with an emergency situation, their only response is to jam on the brakes, causing their slide to worsen and removing all chance of control.
      "This is an incredible sight and how these creatures have not yet gone extinct is truly one of the wonders of nature."

      Black ice is it. Almost no traction there. If you suspect conditions like that, going over 25 can be an invitation to a serious collision. Even at 25 you may not have enough traction to keep the car on the road in a turn. Skidding skills can make things easier in most situations, but in some you are just an audience member. If ice is dry you'll have a lot more traction.. but any wet spots on it can make your traction fall off a cliff.

    • @anthonyferguson7158
      @anthonyferguson7158 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      What you stated is absolutely not true. That applies on dry roads and even wet, but not ice at all. Locked wheels give zero control. ABS doesn't magically make traction. It can help you use what's available if you're one of those who just stomps the brake pedal. As for motorbikes...Again, you are way off. Generally only high end touring bikes have it at all.

    Thumbs up Dan.
    This footage should be shown in driving schools and its lessons apply not only for ice and snow driving but also driving in heavy rain. So it's relevant for many countries. How to steer out of ice slides is taught in only some countries, mostly the Nordics. The right tires for Winter season is crucial since tires are the crucial elemet connecting the vehicle to the road. If the stock tires are for Mud+Snow only, those won't function so well on ice and even with 4WD it might not be enough to steer out of trouble, as evidenced by e.g. 4WD pickups and SUVs (e.g. starting at 9:20) geting into trouble. Studded Winter tires are recommended for places where icy roads are common in the Winter.

    I have witnessed many of these accidents over the many years, as a skier driving the mountains, including autos and tractor-trailers. All of it was due to drivers, again, including tractor-trailers, overdriving the conditions.
    There were numerous mountain winter driving situations where I drove like an old lady, despite that I'm known as a fast, aggressive (I prefer assertive), much to the annoyance of other drivers as well as my passengers. On those occasions, I eventually passed those "faster" drivers who ended up buried in snow banks, off the road, etc. all requiring tow trucks. I drive 4-wheel drive F150s and F250 with aggressive, high-gripping mud-snow tires ... I STILL drive like an old lady on unknown surface conditions from snow (even fresh rain, although not quite as slow as snow). I have literally driven as slow as 15-20 mph for miles down icy or snow-packed mountain roads while other vehicles were speeding past again seeing those vehicle immobilized due to loss of control later on.
    Also, if you look closely at these videos, you will notice the brake lights coming on just before the vehicle go into uncontrolled skids. Worst thing you can do, applying brakes when you first feel your vehicle losing even the slightest traction. That's a natural reaction to panic and hit the brakes. When first noticing loss of traction, keep your foot off the brake, ease completely up off the accelerator, turning the wheels in the direction you would want the vehicle to go (or, turn into the slide), also avoiding turning the wheel to sharply.

    • @chrome4096
      @chrome4096 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Orbits_Loona when your wheels stop turning you basically loose control over a moving car. Thats why ABS for example was invented, or more modern stability control. Thing is, what ever you do when you slide should be done gently, slamming on the brakes makes you slide further than just rolling on AND makes you loose control over the direction you move. A lot of those people also induced an oscillation by over correcting, and then over correcting their over correction and so on (even pilots crashed aircaft that same way going up and down and slamming in the runway). If you slide, get of the gas and very gently steer in the direction you want to go, once you see an effect slowly keep correcting meaning slowly go streight again.
      If you get your first car, look for some training in your area, its good to slide in your car in a controlled fashion before you get into such situations in traffic

      Yeah I went on vacation in west Virginia once and in those mountains the roads are crazy and I could only go up those mountain roads at like 20 cause you have 160° turns everywhere but the speed limit was 40 and in some places 50 and the locals were taking those 160° turns at 40 minimum and with huge cliffs to one side, I dont know how they were doing it but I concluded the locals drive insane! Absolutely insane.

      Some people, and by some I mean a LOT of people seem to have this notion that the road works the same exact way when it's wet or even snow or ice covered as when it's dry.

      "Did not seem to me that all were speeding." They most definitely were speeding for the conditions. Driving requires a bit of common sense and an appreciation of basic physics.

    • @Shawn-rq4py

      Not all of our states have winters bad enough to have them. I live in southeast America and we may have snow once every other year maybe but only for a day or 2 then it’s back to 80 degrees. We have had irregular winters from time to time and had ice storms or heavy snow. However when we get a few inches our state closes all roadways and we stay put. Our northern states however have rough winters so I’m not sure why they don’t have winter tires.

      @Wes Peeble Not all states allow them, though. I live in one such state. If they allowed them, I'd have them in the trunk/boot any time it snowed enough to possibly need them.
      Plus you have to realize how many people would put them on improperly and fling them off while revving out of a ditch, or have them fly off on the highway, wrecking their car and others. I don't trust the average person enough to want them using chains...
