My mom used to tell me that her dad only raised chickens that laid the most eggs. The egg man came everyday to collect the eggs back in the day plus the milk guy. Mom wanted pretty chickens but grandpa said no. I think we raised the ones she liked when my parents ran the farm not far from you. Great memories this brought back. Dad does raise them anymore but his great friend keeps him stocked with fresh eggs.
I consider hard working family farmers like yourself the salt of the earth. I wish I lived close to your farm, it is hard to find fresh farm eggs in my area.
It is my experience with my flock that male turkeys are awesome to keep. Actually Todd isn’t there just for fun, he is great to keep the hawks at bay and protect your flock from flying predators! Also the heritage breed that Marie is raising is very valuable to keep in existence as there aren’t that many farms keeping the rare breeds of turkeys anymore. Well done Marie! You could have your own great market item with them at some point going forward! ❤️
I never learned to tie specific knots, but I did learn the saying that "If you can't tie a knot, tie a lot". That's worked well enough for me in the past.
Suggestion; sink a metal pipe (a size or two larger) than the one you had to remove; it can be flush to the ground, slide the pipe you had to remove into that pipe, then it can be removed easily when needed. We do this for our shed doors; we just use a long piece of rebar and it keeps our doors open while we bring our mower in and out, etc.

I like the kids work ethic..impressive! I too raise layers and sell eggs - Replacement birds this year totaling around 250. I also hand wash my eggs but have started using the metal racks out of an old fridge to dry the eggs on - they hold about 60 eggs, more if you double stack....I do put a towel under the rack so the counter is not soaked. I find the eggs dry way better on the racks as bottom of egg not damp, less laundry and are easy to move around on the racks if need be. I was surprised to see that the eggs were not candled and date stamped with the date picked. I do both as it helps for rotation in the fridge and lets the customer know how fresh the eggs are and that there are no cracks or blood spots. But whatever works for ya. Good job Marie.

Do you electrify your fence? We tend to have more predators if we don't. We have turkeys in tractors ourselves. So your turkeys and chickens get the same feed?

You guys get snow right? I’m just wondering about your wintertime chicken coop situation, do you leave them in the pasture with the hay wagon chicken coop? Or do you move them into another one? I live in the Upper Peninsula of MI and we get pretty chilly here but we are building our homestead from scratch (wooded land, getting it cut In the next couple weeks to start building pastures) and I’m just wondering if that would work for 0 and below temps and lots of snow 😩
A well ventilated, insulated, structure would be best for deep winter for sure! We experience a significant drop in production and freezing eggs when we attempt to keep them in the mobile coop. You just have to weigh out the advantages and cost input into a structure like that versus how many eggs or chickens you will get.
Are you guys having what people are calling a hard Molting season with your egg layers this fall? I have 38 hens and I only get about three eggs a week. Do you have any tips and tricks on how to boost the egg laying up without using lights?

When I was a small girl, and lived in northern PA, in the 50's and 60's, we were not allowed to wear pants to school. IT WAS SO COLD. Out of 12 turkeys we only have one left. They are super hard to keep. We have no problems keeping chickens, ducks and geese alive.

We wash eggs for our customers and put them in the farm shop fridge but for ourselves we keep them unwashed.
