    The British people are so nice. I love your country's sense of humor and the country is very beautiful, I am an American, who given a chance, would love to live in the UK. I had the good fortune to visit in 1989 and loved every minute during that time. It was the best vacation. Everyone my husband and I met were kind and helpful. I was very impressed by everything in GB. Love your traditions and beauty of your cities and countryside as well. I hope to one day to return to the country that I loved since childhood. The British are the best!!!

    True there were quite a few above Britain but it was mainly incredibly small countries like the Bahamas/Trinidad and Tobago with 1-2 Gold medals which doesn't really give an accurate reflection however Hungary came away with 8 and I will say they truly done better than us per capita.
    But GB came third in the medals table with 29 Golds and that's quite stunning in comparison with the likes of China/US/Russia and other countries in Europe.

    As for immigrants we welcome them with open arms, provide health care, education and shelter and for no input from them save the promise of contribution to our diverse society as and when they are settled. I dare say a few hundred thousand people in Syria or Iran or any of the other Muslim nations would love the chance to join our "mistreated" society. This country IS the finest country in the world Do you know why? Because we are TOLERANT, tolerant of people such as yourself.

    I never really quite understood the "medal per capita" statistics and their significance.

    • @chrism7574
      @chrism7574 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because obviously a larger country has more ability to create top class athletes to win more medals by quantity. Most medals per capita is just a measurement of the ration between medals and population total. Now he doesn't really have it correctly, because GB has a medal to population ratio of 1:957,876, while Grenada, who only got one medal, had a medal ratio of 1:110,821.
      So for every medal that GB won, they have almost 958k in population.
      In comparison, the US have just over 3 million per medal.
      And China has 15.3 million per medal.

    • @cylaq
      @cylaq 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess what I'm confused about is what is there to be proud of from the interpretation of the "medal per capita" statistics. I should clarify that I have an undergraduate degree in pure mathematics but I only took the most elementary course in statistics so this is a bona fide question about statistics and interpretation thereof. This isn't about nationalism or patriotism. ALSO I find equally confusing is the "total gold medal" / "total medal" statistics and their significance.
      It seems to me that one divides the number of medals by population in order to remove any inherent biased/unfair contribution from the sheer population to the medals tally and in hope of gaining a "purer" form of statistics which reveals the strengths/weaknesses of a nation's sporting ability/achievements.
      Take diving for example, a country only needs to produce about 5-10 top athletes in the field for a real possibility of gaining a medal. If that country has only a population of 10 people, then it's virtually impossible that all those 10 people are top divers. If the population goes up to say 10,000 - 50,000, then the odds may be marginally better but still very slim. However, when the population reaches say one million, then that country has a pretty good chance of producing 5-10 medal-worthy divers.
      From this point onwards, every extra million population probably only improve the chance ever so slightly. When the population reaches say 10 million, any inherent advantage by having extra population is probably gone by this point.
      Therefore if two countries win the same number of medals where one has population of 20 million but the other has 100 million people, I'm failing to see any objective quality of the first country revealed by this statistic which justifies the people of the first country to feel proud.
