Contrary to popular belief, lightning will strike multiple times and in the same spot. If there’s enough ionization built up after an initial strike, there will be multiple strikes until the ionization is spent. Being localized, the lightning (electricity) will opt for the path of least resistance, i.e. the last “road” taken, which still contains positively charged ions.

When a hurricane came over my area of long island about 40 or so years ago, i chose to stay home, as i was dumb. One brother decided to look out for me. My mom, other brother and sis went to a shelter in the city. Although i was braindead enough to stay home, a cute dog who was roaming the street was glad i did, as i rescued him in time before the heaviest winds ripped apart a large section of our area, plunging half the town into darkness for weeks. Our house was on a grid that was restored that same day. the damage on our block, including my backyard was extreme. Even the pool exploded because of the pressure.

1:28 It will always find the shortest path to ground. So, if that pole is the only or best way to reach the ground in that area, it's going to hit it multiple times. Usually there's many good grounding points. It's pretty odd to see it strike that many times in one spot.
Edit: Path of least resistance. Not physically shortest distance. To be clear.

Hi Kabir, while tornadoes can produce incredible damage, even stripping the ground of pavement and tarmac, trees and buildings, hail storms can be far more damaging. Tornado damage is usually confined to a rather small area. Hail storms, however, cause widespread damage. Tens of thousands of roofs and cars can be affected. Hail not only breaks the glass, but leaves the rest of the car looking like a dozen carpenters hammered in the roof, trunk, and hood(roof, boot and bonnet)! It can cause thousands of dollars to fix your car, and many, many thousands to repair your house. I got caught in a bad hailstorm at Mayfest, an annual spring festival held in Fort Worth, Texas. The hail was marble sized, and left me with numerous bumps on my head and bruises on my hands, which I was trying to cover my head with, and on my shoulders. I later heard that four people died from it.
Since you are coming next spring, you might get lucky and see a tornado, we are in Tornado Alley, and spring is the beginning of tornado season!

Well Kabir, since you're curious. I'm in North Florida and in less than a year, Hurricane Idalia, a tornado in May, and Hurricane Debby all battered my home and property. Finally, our giant oak tree gave up and fell on the house. I was standing in the doorway taking video when it hit. Somehow, me and my pets all were unharmed. I'm looking at the huge hole in my ceiling now😂. But, finally, FEMA came through for me and sent some relief money. I guess third time's a charm. The roof was replaced a few days ago. Thank goodness because we just got rain all day from Francine. Woo hoo!😂❤

Fun (not) story - my spouse and I planned a long-needed vacation to St. Augustine, Florida. I went there in elementary school, but hadn't been since. My spouse hadn't been there at all. We got a B&B room upon arrival, went out to the beach and dinner, as it was late. We then saw they offered a Ghost Tour. Great! Did that, lots of fun, tons of historical information. When we got back to the B&B, we were told we had to evacuate the next morning. Ah, Hurricane Ian. So we got up early, and turned inland to visit parents in Central Florida. The hurricane went almost right over us, the wind howling all night was terrifying. But worse was the next day, when everyone poked their heads out to see the damage. Water was EVERYWHERE. Flooded streets, trees down, lots of debris. So we didn't get our dream vacation, but spouse got to live through a hurricane, which was a first for him!

Yes, you can get insurance for tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, etc. It is pricy but most people who live in areas that have frequent severe weather consider it worthwhile. When it comes to rain and other water getting in homes, lot of homes with basements get water in their basement from severe storms or melting snow - and they have sump pumps in their basement to pump the water out, and large fans they turn on to help things dry out.

Hey Kabir, I recently moved into my Van and got out of my apartment. I live in Florida btw. I couldn’t afford 3k a month rent anymore because of inflation. It was either stay there and not be able to afford food or hop in the van and make the best of it. It’s fully set up with a backup generator kitchen with a small stove, shower (which I don’t use unless I’m not near a planet fitness). It’s quite nice being able work remotely on a beach, however that weather was crazy and the van was rockin back and forth. I had to move during the storm to have the windshield facing the wind which wasn’t easy. I lost a side mirror but it wasn’t expensive to replace. This van was just used for weekend trips and such but now it’s my house on wheels. I’m now saving 3k a month. It’s good on gas unless I go long distance like over 200 miles. That’s not necessary though. I honestly didn’t even leave town, I just moved beachside. Hope your well my friend ❤

Why is gas over $4.00 in blue states? Cmon. I can’t find any place in the state that not in the ghetto for less that $1500 a month on rent and even then it’s an old pos complex. Inflation may have driven up the costs of an apartment somewhat, but it's way more likely you were being price gouged like crazy by the scumbag landlord. Inflation wouldn't be nearly as bad as it is right now, if it wasn't for companies literally raising prices beyond the inflation levels from the pandemic era. I mean look at that supermarket chain (I forgot which one, maybe Kroger's?) got caught raising prices well beyond inflation because they could get away with it. I'm sorry you had to make that choice regardless.

Everyone brings something and one girl has this inflatable movie screen with a projector. We all post up on the beach with a bonfire set up the screen and watch movies and cook out. It’s fun times. I honestly feel free from the system. One day I can be in one city the next if I want I can leave the state and be at the mountains rent free.

Our neighborhood looked like a bomb had gone off. We were lucky we lost a smallsection of fence, the gazebo and a small tree in front. The biggest issue with these things is insurance. AFter this happens a lot of people lost their insurance or tried to make claims and insurance went sky high. We are talking thoughsands a year wtih like a 7000 or 10,000 dollar deductable if you can get it. AS a homeowner you are caught between a rock and a hard place. Make a claim and you will probably be cancelled or at least premiums raised a lot. Don't makea claim and be victim to all the repair people that are price gauging.

Home insurance in the US is divided into two basic categories------a comprehensive home owner's policy, which includes fire , storm and pretty much all other sorts of damage except flood , which is a separate policy. Because we live on a small island , we have to carry both types of insurance . The homeowner's policy costs us about $4,000 per year and I have the new flood insurance bill lying here on my desk . Three years ago it was $ 500 per year , last year it was $ 780 , and now it is $1500.When we got hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 ,it was a big hassle sorting out between the two which category all of the different types of damage fell under which policy . Each company tried to claim that most of it was the responsibility of the other . In the end I got back $38,000 from the two insurance companies for about $150,000 of damage

It rains about half of the year. I got off the bus a few months ago about 5 minutes from my job. I got caught in a storm similar to the ones shown in the video. It was awful. I couldn't see because it was raining so hard. And the wind kept blowing the rain into my face. I had an umbrella. But that didn't help. I ended up being drenched in rain. I ended up stopping about 2 minutes after getting off the bus. I walked to a halfway house that I passed everyday. And stood on their porch while I waited for the rain to subside. One of the employees at the halfway house saw me. And let me come in and dry off. He gave me a towel and a change of clothes. He also gave me a brand new backpack. Since the one that I was wearing was drenched. He ended up giving me a ride to work. I was about a block and a half from work. But the storm made it impossible to see. Turns out that man was my assistant director's cousin.

People should plan have to deal with whatever weather you usually get becoming far more extreme. For us in the UK we can expect dangerous heat waves in the summer, possibly colder winters, and more intense hurricanes and storms. We might be luckier than some when it comes to the extremes they were already dealing with (tornado alley, for example) but all weather is trending toward the extremes as a result of climate change.
