- Today we dismantle this old rusty motor from the 1965 VW Beetle restoration. This engine was sitting outside for over 40 years. It's RUSTED! Complete ENGINE Teardown. Restoration air-cooled Type 1 Volkswagen engine build
The best start to a restoration video in a long time: “we are going to be using vice grips a lot on this one…”. Another great video CT-keep ‘em coming!
HAHA! Thanks Jeff!!! =)

Did you fit the drive boots ?
Get yourself an engine stand. Life will become much more simple then.
Ya lo tiene..
I agree.
Loving this build I'm willing to bet you could get this engine running
Thanks Justin! =)
I know you could with Darren’s help.
Jaaa. I just realized why I enjoy watching your channel. It’s like when people see a car accident and instead of driving everyone slows down to see what happened. I also enjoy watching someone struggle like the rest of us and find out if they figure it out. We were all you at some point. I still learn from your videos too as I’m sure a lot of other newbies do so keep making these videos and let us learn from your mistakes. Honestly I bet most people are where you are and these videos help out a lot. Most dudes are not like those high budget car shows with all the equipment and full editing team. They are just like you and me. DIY guys. Getting it done.
Well said my friend! The struggle is real! =)
WELL THE LIFTER CORES ARE GOOD......Save them we are running low on lifter cores.
So cool! I'm a vw enthusiest and worked on ton's of vw's back in the 80'and 90's.
The paint on the motor you put in matches one I bought and painted. The silver blue one. So awesome
I did not expect to much to be good concerting the shape of the car. Good video!
😎😎😎
I don't know if it's too late to number the cylinder heads and pistons at this point, the pistons may only need piston rings and the con rods might benefit from a little PB Blaster and heat before you remove them, if that's what you're going to do. The surface rust isn't something I've seen before but it's light. I've only rebuilt one of these engines but I'd say pressure wash it and get a specialist verdict (I don't know if you've put together a short youtube video of less than two minutes, it might work quite well for this purpose. If the corrosion is minor, a rebuild is possible - it might weaken the case as I'm sure you're aware and it could be prone to leaks as well as not lasting that long.
Mustie1 once fixed an engine that was a lot worse than this one in terms of aluminium corrosion and reckoned it would last another 50k miles or so.
CONTIGO DE SEGURO QUE ESE MOTOR VA A QUEDAR PERFECTO COMO DE FABRICA, TE SIGUO DESDE HACE UNOS AÑOS, PORQUE ERES MUY PRESICO EN TUS TRABAJOS, TE FELICITO Y MIL BENDICIONES DESDE VENEZUELA
I have worked with Germans many years. They always said Clean before disassembling. Very True.!
Cool teardown CT! Some parts for blasting as you say.
Thanks 👍
Some useful spare parts there CT always good to investigate
It´s the same level of difficulty as bringing up the Titanic to the surface and repairing. A Swedish thought.
Fascinating, I loved seeing how those engines go together, I'd have to agree with your assessment that it's mostly toast, like you said, there's still a lot of those out there.
after a good cleaning, you can assess how the engine block is and what can be done to recover, a lot of work ahead!
Hi. That's right. An engine-stand is absolutely helpful. I've welded a stand out of flat-steel, four wheels and empty used gearbox. If a starter is mounted you can even use the stand for run-ups.
Greetings and regards
Good idea! =)
PARABÉNS PELO BELO TRABALHO E PELO VÍDEO, TENHO UMA OFICINA MECÂNICA E ME INSPIRO MUITO NO SEU TRABALHO.
I think you're doing great man you didn't break any fins office on the cylinder heads
Excellent video CT :) also that not first motor seen that rusted up and dirty before and I seen lots them ! But was excellent task to take apart for and amazing to do!
Снетерпением ждем продолжения!!!!!!!!
Nice job on the teardown
Save what you can, have seen cranks come back good, interesting just what can be done.
When I was in high school I had a 1969 VW bug and the belt would jump off the pulley. Replaced pulley and belt lots of time. Taken to shops and they couldn't get it right either. Drove around with a spare pulley and belt.
Maybe the crank and generator pulleys were not perfectly aligned; this happens frequently.
Domenica! Grandioso appuntamento! Ottimo lavoro! Bravo!! Saluti da Milano (Italia)
Enjoyed and learned..thank
Hi CT, guess what? I'm picking up a 40h Friday to play with and possibly do a restore if good? 50 bucks but I have to drive up north an hour. Turns over an has compression. Missing some external parts buts he said he has them. Fun winter project even though I don't have a bug yet. Got a plan for that two someday
keep that anchor away from that chassis :)
I got something up my sleeve! =)
Excellent video ty!
Damn CT! That engine is a mess! That is one of the nastiest one I’ve seen! Good luck in trying to reuse some of them parts! Great video! That really looked like a task!😎👍
Thanks buddy! Yes, it is really bad......I might have a back up plan! =)
@@CTmoog lol 😂 I see! Maybe a whole new engine! Yikes!
Here We are back again taking things apart
And not finishing any projects
Good call on trying to preserve and use some of the parts. A shame it’s mostly a goner. But; like you say; after a good cleanup many things could turn out to be good, including the case. The cases on those 1200s due to their low power didn’t get the pounding that the larger engines got. You might be surprised.
The fun part of VWs tearing it down and rebuilding it enjoy the challenge
А какой смысл разбирать этот мертвый двигатель, он даже на запасные части не годен. Сам процесс реставрации вызывает удовлетворение. Смотрю с большим удовольствием. Спасибо, удачи!
O bloco parece estar muito bom, ele quer manter o original.
да не факт что мотор труп, отмыть надо, не удивлюсь, если даже не все поршни поменяются при ремонте

Cool video 👍
Thanks 👍
Hey! You are doing great work! I wonder whether one video represents one day of work or if it' s mixed up a little / a couple of days compromised to one video. Can you answer me that question?
Thanks buddy! =) Yes, sometimes I get the work done in one day sometimes it takes two or three days....there are so many factors involved it really depends.
Minha série preferida 👍🇧🇷
This is the best VW beetle! ☝️🇧🇷
Holy smokes. That thing is toasted. I’m surprised when you said it’s no good. That doesn’t seem like CT. Honestly I would soak everything in a bucket of parts cleaner and see how it looks after. Then you can make a better decision if something is trash. Seems like OG German 40 horse parts are getting harder to find. I wouldn’t worry about saving certain parts for this project though unless you plan to keep the engine stock. You might be able to keep the stock look and upgrade the internals. If not you can sell the good stuff on samba maybe. Or just keep them as wall art. Jaaa. I feel like all og German parts are collectible now even if it’s trash.
Hey CT, I watched this through to the end and find myself asking why hasn’t anyone ever taken a 25gal barrel of penetrating oil and dropped an entire rust bucket engine in it for a month, then attempt to tear it down? Why fight all that rust and corrosion?
That's a good idea Stew! Maybe I'll try that not eh next one! =)
I had to think of Hand Tool Rescue's barrel of rust remover.
wow the engine is rough brother that will be a challenge to save that one.
Most of it could be cleaned up and be okay, barring wear/corrosion-pitting, but yeah, that case is pretty sorry!
I'm surprised the cam-gear is still there! Those usually get eaten away when they sit in water.
I've got some cams where several teeth rotted off! (like the bottom of the case did)
Crank wouldn't be too tough, nice bath in evaporust or do some electrolysis to it, same for the rods.
But you really hit the nail on the head when you asked- Is it worth the time? Depends on the costs you want to pay.
You either pay in time spent cleaning, some of which will reveal a part isn't usable, or you pay for new parts.
I think it'd be an impressive thing to get that running with as many original parts as possible, not counting wear items like bearings, but it definitely wouldn't be worth the huge amount of effort! I look forward to the art-pieces!
Dude stop to tearing apart things and start re assembling something
“You’d want to be more delicate” as you drop the crank on the ground 😂
It’s a rough engine but some of the parts may be salvageable.
Worse case, lots of yard art supplies there!
Channel your inner Mustie1, send Mrs. CT to a day spa, and fire up the vapor blaster for a day of cleaning that block and other parts!
The crankshaft and rods don't look that bad, just minor honing and I think it'd be good.
👍👍👌👌
I always had problems with the fan rubbing in the fan housing.
theres a bellows thermostat usually on the rod for the heater flaps
At 3:11, Don't forget the Finnish code word "PERKELE". All rusty nuts, bolts and screws will open mutch more easyer☺️. Regards Stig Österberg from Dalsbruk in Finland.
Amazing how critters get into even the smallest places to take up residence. This engine is the definition of diminishing returns.
You are the only person I've ever seen who used a hammer to disassemble an engine! You need to invest in some much needed tool's
Guess you don’t work on old VWs?
@@andyhamilton8940 first things first, clean the dirt off the engine before disassembly! Spraying penetrating oil on dirt isn't going to help loosen anything. Heat helps remove stuck nuts and bolts.
@@gregmarcou1705 yes we need to keep a parts engine very clean for disassembly.
you should use a vacuum to get that crud off as you go. Also some cases need a compressed air blow.
See if "Minute of Dangle" will dip that case for you. Lol
Saludos de Mexico CT
👍👍👍
Thank you my friend! =)
Is this the original engine?
Yes! =)
Amazing that the exhaust ant muffler are intact
You need a hand impact driver for those screws…. They are cheap.
Save those “forgotten tins” I hear they fit better than after market I think
Wow, looks good to me...
Hehe, hidden archeologic treasures inside.. Waw, that's a wonderful left in the water to rot machine. You certainly know it's serious, when aluminum gets corroded and some mice took a piss on it.. 🤔 Could it be refurbished? Probably with an insane amount of work and parts, but if you want someting "more", then you replace it. I wonder how mine is gonna be, when I'll open it up.. It leaks a bit of water in the oilpan, producing some milkshakle... Cheers, Mr. CT, slowly something is going to be born.. 😉
Use your little blow, torch and warm those rusty boats up and nuts it will help them to come out easier if they don’t break off.
yeah I was wondering why you wasnt using the impact screwdriver
If it was me I'll disassemble everything lube everything and make it run, those engines are really strong..
It looks like it was used as a boat anchor.
Hey Dave! Yes, I think it was....=)
Yeah, my first thought was: "Are you sure it sat in a field and not on the bottom of a pond?"
Bay a small induction heater for bolts and laser cleaner for rusted staff, and you save money and time.
Are you going to use new rims or rehab the origionals
It would be great if you could save the original engine if that is the Original!!! More work but it could be cool to watch
I'm pretty sure it's original. We might try to save it.
HEY! You forgot to sweep the floor, CT!
I have a 68 bug and the engine is seized too - no rotation at all and no thrust motion on the crank. I expect my engine to look like that on the inside.Empi case is in my future
Show 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷
get a torch...heat those bolts up...helps them to come loose
dannng CT that is one crusty vw motor thierssome salvageable parts but man bud that motor is crusty 😯
first of all-wash all the parts and then make a closer look with measuring tool, the engine may be not so bad as it seems
Hey CT. I got a 61 beetle and need the top, gen, shield and stuff. How much?
I would save it just out of curiosity
The water pump probably failed and filled it with water 😏
Got a dumpster on standby?
Put a nice 1776 with dual carb set up in her.
=) You know what's up!
I thought those slots in the front pulley were for a puller.
6volt?
Hi CT, I need that first look, dump the shit, not worth putting money in neater time. Good luck with the rest of the Bug restoration Buy one new or a nice used engine, greetings buddy,Hubertus
Power wash the case before you say no go mine had nuts and leaves in the lower case,,, cleaned up just fine. Those cases and cranks are very rugged, my t4 is being rebuild. TSN
Esse esta realmente muito tempo parado !
diga os varios componnetes do motor
That crankcase was pretty gunky, someone didn't change the oil regularly. Strange how the rocker covers were relatively clean(er). I also notice the strainer was already removed. I guessing someone tried to do something long ago but gave up. Maybe a serious engine flush...
Hi CT, you never know on those motors till you take them apart. Yep save what you can and sell what you can. Good plan on having Darrin take a look first. Don't you have a new rebuilt one you can use? If not I'm sure Darrin can set you up when your ready on the bug. Definitely put a 1600 in it duel port
Hey Tim! Yes, it's too bad this one is so far gone but there are some good parts. Darrin said he can save it but not sure I want to go that way right now. I have the Ghia engine Darrin built last year. I might borrow that one for a bit! =)
It's even more cramped in a bus oddly enough,my first tune up.was on my 69..one spark plug had.gone in.crooked and I didn't realize.popped out..didn't even know that u could buy motor.halves either
super
Yikes! Best thing to do is get new everything.
Pour a 50/50 mixture of acetone and ATF down the cylinders
I don't know why people don't use heat when removing rusted hardware. Plain old propane torch . Oh and impact screw drivers are great for situations like this.
CT, I think the main reason the internals look so bad in that engine is because somebody removed the oil sump cover years ago, and let water and humidity get into the crankcase. Find another engine.
Amazing how many VW engines end up under 💦
didnt actualy see any broken parts but a bunch of wear though lol
You forgot to drain all the dirt from the engine before disassembling...
HAHA! =)
