Robert glad to see Big Pine Fishing Lodge campground at 14:22. We stayed there a week after we met you, about three weeks after you were in the area. The staff did not take money from us until after we had a chance to check things out, they told us to be prepared it was nothing like we would remember from previous stays. But they are working on bringing it back, the pool was open and warm. The road going by it that you took to the end was off limits to anyone but home owners/approved visitors when we were there, just weeks after you, so I would say that the boon docking spot is no longer open/allowed. We did see a deer the morning after our first stay, came real close to our site. Sure glad that Big Pine has a large grocery store, even though it is hidden from US1 since we needed supplies. We did fail to visit No Name Pub, a place we usually stop at. Love their food, but not convince that they have the best pizza. THANK YOU for your blunt honesty about places, we almost stopped at the place you did that was overpriced. Since we got rained out of work and caught up with paperwork now playing catchup watching your videos and tonight someone on a Fulltime FB page just asked about Bahia/Keys camping, so we shared a link to this video and recommended they watch all your videos.

As part of our honeymoon my wife and I camped by tent for three nights at the park back in 2002. The park hadn't been ravaged by hurricanes at that time and so was in better shape. I haven't been able to reserve a campsite there since, glad we made a video of it at the time.

I know it’s nature’s cycle, but it is quite sad to see how destroyed this place is after hurricane Irma. Looking at the ocean it is still gorgeous and relaxing, but the lush vegetation is gone. I wonder how long it will take to recover. Great memories of Bahia Honda. Thanks for the video.

Hi Robert and family, How are you all? Do hope you are doing great. We watched your show in Florida on the keys at Bahai Park. Its ok to leave the oil behind but the toilet paper....we laughed so hard. We loved the sunset Robert and think Florida's sunsets are the most beautiful in all the world. They do not get any better and bring us to tears when we view them. Thank you Robert and family. You all are a blessing for our world. Its people like you that will make the Americas great again. When I was about 6 my parents took us to Key West in our Chevy Woodie. Back then the bridges were mostly WOOD! and NOT so safe.
There was a fisherman on one of the bridges... he had just landed a fish ... and BAM... my timid mom ran over it. I can still hear the poor guy yelling! Timing.... it's everything! LOL

@@cherylyoung979 Aahhh the good ole days. 🌴🐟🐠🦈 however.. although the Ride back then .. (around 1954) was simply beautiful... once you GOT to Key West itself... that was kind of a downer... just a drab Navy base, everything painted gray .. and No Beach... No touristy Duval St. with all its shops & restaurants. Key West really had to re-invent itself to stay alive.. and that they've done.

Robert, wanted to say there is a very nice Winn-dixie on Big Pine Key. Where you turn off of route 1 to go to No Name Pub, take the left at the Y and you are right there. Nice laundromat in the complex also. Stayed at Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge in February and the Key Deer are everywhere, they stroll right through your site. Thanks for another great video!

Peggy and I made reservations for this park back in 2014. We arrived on the date agreed upon. Only to find out we were one year to early ! A typo I'm sure. Never the less, we traveled on down further to the KOA. With just one opening. A bit crowded for our likes. We were lucky to have it.

    • @TravelingRobert

Wow! I was at Bahia Honda a week ago (my first time in the Keys)and we wish the weather had been like this. All the locals were apologizing about the wind and rain saying "It's never like this..." however it was still beautiful. We were able to take a tram tour of the closed areas of the park, well worth the suggested donation of $5/person. They've got a long way to go but they say they have the funds coming to them and they seemed optimistic. Can't wait to get back here again someday and see it all fixed up. Thanks for your relaxing and inspiring videos!

You need to look for the key deer, at dusk. That's when they come out and feed along the roadside. We got lucky at 3:00 p.m. but only because it was stormy and it got so cloudy that it looked like dusk. Incidentally, my Uncle Jerry was the Big Pine Key postmaster for many years.

7:55 Your "wild" crab, sand & sea grass reminded me of the time a city guy from New Jersey took a job with my company back in the late '80s. My wife & I invited them to come float down the Itchetucknee River with us and you could tell they were not comfortable. I asked _Is something wrong?_ He replied it would be much nicer if they would *concrete-in* the bottom of the river the way they do in Disney... just completely dead-serious. I tell ya Robert, I didn't even know what to say.

My wife and I were at Marathon Key the first week of April. Totally agree that the clean up has been miraculous. But the scope of the damage was apparent everywhere. It was obvious from Key Largo to Big Pine Key. The south side of the keys took most of the damage. Key West appeared to have dodged a bullet and showed the least damage, though that may be where most of the restoration focus occurred.
I had my Mavic drone with me but hesitated to fly it since most of the public parking in the Keys was within a Florida state park. Are you a 107 certified (commercial UAV) pilot?

I believe when they paved the railroad roadway for vehicular travel, they used the actual "rails" from the train tracks to make the guard railing. Used to drive over the bridge many times growing up in south Florida. Scariest was the part you showed at Bahia Honda. The road was built on top of the trestle, not on the train tracks. If there was a traffic accident on the bride,it could shut down the bridge for hours. Two very narrow lanes left no room to get around the accident so you had to wait it out. Thanks for bringing us along.

    • @femurphy77
      @femurphy77 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The old Seven Mile Bridge used rails from the old railroad. We were down there a couple of years ago and I was surprised how much they had corroded. In some places they had fallen completely away. And yes an accident on the bridge or if the draw bridge stuck open caused travel nightmares.

Very impressive area. When looking up the old Bahia Honda Rail Bridge, it said that 2 spans were removed to accommodate boat traffic after the replacement bridge was built later. I thought maybe the old bridge was broken up because of hurricane damage.

Sure is hard to get a site at Bahia Honda. I just got back from Sugar Sands RV Park, u did a video of the place way back. Crappy weather but I loved the little park.
    Once again another great video!

I think the only reason I got in is because the park is not fully open and some people probably canceled. Thank you!

Bhaia Honda beach is the best one for sure. On the other side of the bridge there is lot of wildlife in the marsh land...the dwarf deers and alligators.

I enjoyed the historical narrative in this video and since the water is more turquoise here, I think I will come here instead of key largo

Your drone footage is fantastic!! ~when you said "Hide, before you become crab-cake" I literally laughed out loud! The bridge at 21:50 was that hurricane damage or was it always separated like that? That sunset capture at 25:46 is one of the most majestic I have ever seen. AMAZING! Great video Robert!
