My favourite HWM skill is point blank shot, just for the animation of him lowering the gun and clicking it. Probably muttering "Got something for you right here......."
8:58 one thing you didn’t quite mention about Double Tap when it comes to boss killing is since the vast majority of bosses occupy 2 or more spaces, Double Tap can always hit them (assuming Dismas is in the right ranks). The best example is something like Leviathan, since it moves around a lot to make way for the hand, but it’s still able to be shot by Double tap at all times because it’s large. This doesn’t apply to every boss though, the Librarian is a notably annoying exception (though because of the timing you can still probably kill it with Double tap when you need to).
Parrying Patriarch + Smoldering Hymnal on a Rogue Dismas with the classic Duelist's Advance -> Point-Blank Shot combo was my first-try 1.0. Resentment clear, on a fresh Steam profile just the other day. Rough going getting there but the payoff was 200% worth it My man's absolutely _dumpstered_ Resentment. Finished the fight with literally 0 Stress and basically full HP/without getting meaningfully hit
Rat Skull + Smoldering Hymnal on a Sharpshot is bonkers. 66% chance you start the fight by blasting the enemy frontliner into orbit with a 34 damage Point Blank Shot crit. And the firing off Grapeshot Blasts with crit and strength tokens from rank 2 puts out 16 damage into both front ranks. Or you switch to Pistol Shot or Double tap to demolish the back rankers.
just beat act 3 today. wast stuck there since early access. Beat it with only dismas sharpshot after all my party died (in the first DBR check). I had on him Thrilling Tablet. 100% more damage and hp per missing hero. Just want it to thank you for your guides. they've helped me a lot. Always go through your videos when find myself stuck in any away. You make great content!!! Thanks!!
One thing I feel I should say since the game updated quite a bit since this video is that DB resist on enemies is no longer a thing and they instead have DB armor that protects them automatically from an instance of damage if it would kill them. Wicked slice was given a buff called execution that can kill an enemy if it has one instance of DB armor. It can’t activate if the enemy has 2 or 3 instances of DB armor. But I guess it makes wicked slice have more utility for cutting through DB armor and killing tanky enemies a bit quicker
I believe that Double Tap also has this same effect of Execution since it also previously had DB resist piercing. I don't know if this is going to be a pinned comment or not, I just want people to know why there is a discrepancy in the video compared to current and future versions since it is considered to be a fundamental change to gameplay and this video and others are pretty solid guides, so I guess this is an addendum.
Highwayman Robbery skill can easily deal with all enemies that can generate tokens. Also many enemies/Bosses can use blind debuff so Take Aim skill is also excellent skills to counter them.
Ned to remind people that they are not hard locked into selecting their 5 skills. Example, you can unequip Double tap for Non Lairs, Non Oblivion Nodes. Which means Highmanway (and many others) will never be caught off with a "uselsss skill". Additionally, once people do figure out that, Take Aim+Grapeshot starts dealing closer to 32/36/40 over two targets, they will realize that Highwayman is literally never caught off-guard.
Not to mention Grapeshot is the only ranged ability that he can hit the front spot with without being in front himself, and using a crit token with it often results in at least 1 person getting some stress reduction.
Your videos are amazing, good sir. I haven't really had that much time to sink into this game yet, just picked it up recently. But Highwayman I've really come to enjoy bringing along for the exact reason you stated: his consistency. Yeah, he won't reach those 70+ crits easily, but at the end of an act it seems very easy to just pump 20+ almost every round regardless of what team you bring along.
On wicked versus open vein, I prefer open vein simply because it's a good way for HWM to ignore blocks and still actually do something. You aren't running a DoT for the upfront damage, but the longer term payback.
Take aim and gun is so good, especially for those guaranteed high damages. Also reposte is usefull for stripping dodges and defence tokens from enemies. I would like to make teams without him but I haven't found an other character that does damage as good and consistent as he does. Similarly, man at arms is so good that teams without him i struggle with.
I cant stop gushing about how great of a buffing ability take aim is and why its so much better and worth using than buffs in DD1. The way it changes from DD1 buf is that in dd1 you can either swing 3 times for random numbers or buff 1 turn for 20-30% to deal slightly bigger numbers in round 2 and 3. In dd2 crit tokens guarantee max roll +50% damage so the math comes to 1 turn buff and 2 turn that deal the same damage if you hit 3 times for max damage roll without talking about the benefits of crit. The only way swinging 3 times would be better than using take aim is if you hit max damage on 2 hits and a crit on one of them. I agree with the nerfs to dodge and cooldown they gave it and now it's in a great spot. it was a bit to overtuned at first.
What I love more in DDII is that fact that tokens are insanely powerful but limited, so you need to consider how to spend them, like resource, and provide counterplay. Unlike DDI, where you just stack shit ton of stats, then perhaps pray RNJesus, and blow enemies away.
@@kadenha2175 In DD1 you stack the buffs but they rarely were useful as just hitting multiple times unless you were running a meme build where you 1 shot a boss. also dodge and blind are way better than accuracy and dodge in DD1 cause in DD2 you have to make a choice while in DD1 you just pray. This also removes the need for accuracy trinkets and damage trinkets are rarely better than trinkets that give tokens.
Correct, the thing about dd crits is the always max roll rule. Rolls of 6-13 average to like 9,5 but crit for 19. Its the ole ancestors pen shit. 8 percent crit, 10 percent dmg sounds measly. But it should average out to about 20.3 percent.
grape shot with take aim is actualy quite insane in damage. He deals by default like 18 to 2 targets consistently, which is 36 damage. Add vulnerable and damage trinkets and those numbers start ramping up closser to 50 damage totall. There is no other hero in the game that can consistently deal 40+ damage per turn outside of DOT combos with specialized items.
I’m back at it again with a small detail that mostly goes unnoticed but can change everything about how you play, there is an unlisted effect that makes it so highwayman’s riposte occasionally combo’s the enemy with no trinkets required.
Been loving these videos man, thanks so much! You really hit that perfect balance of concise and informative that makes your videos easily digestible without leaving me with questions at the end. Any interest in doing a video on how to make a dance team in DD2? That would be super cool to see.
I usually run sharpshot with take aim and grapeshot and double tap Extra damage from grapeshot + take aim for guaranteed crits = goodbye enemy back line with doubletap
Feel like double cross should give combo when upgraded to make yellow hand feel a bit better. Open vein could also use a small damage buff, since, even if you're playing him as a more utility/support character, at his core he is a damage character.
The way I play HWM is to combo him with Vestal and Jester for maximum amount of Light Consecration usage. Btw, Vestal in this team is a tank and PD is the healer on 4-th position. Trust me, it's great. You got 2 stress healers, two regular healers, insane mobility for whole team provided by Jester, DoTs from PD, and Vestal as tank with the path which gains conviction on hits. The only two things I miss is the taunt... and for the most time I really struggle with moving my PD from 4-th to 3-d to use cause of death.
I feel like I just wanna change rogue so that it makes riposte and/or duelist's advance do a little bit more damage and then the character would be perfect
I go ranged grapeshot spam normally and put a doctor/cultist in the back for backline wreckage. Then leper up front. Bit of a weak setup for stress but there are ways around that
16:17 The -15% crit does not force you to stay under 100 relics, it is staying OVER 100 relics, meaning thats a lot of money you're not allowed to spend versus just spending all your money (which is good when fighting the last boss).
I would really like to see a guide on the occultist. He seems like a very interesting character but I think I struggle to use him to his full potential.
the first couple of times I got cursed coin I didn't pay attention to the text and assumed you had to be over 100 coins to NOT get -15% crit. I assumed because it was a coin you had to be rich to use it, so I threw it away. I was using a take-aim/robbery sharpshot build each time... lol.
Is there a good reason to use HWM as a Rogue instead of Sharpshot if you're going to mainly use Point Blank Shot? Both paths would give him 25% damage but Sharpshot would also boost his other ranged abilities when not in first position. Plus you get more speed.
Only if you want to use the melee moves instead. That'd make rogue better, but as you said the other ranged skills are good too with the speed. In terms of a meta thing, not really a reason to use it. Fun is reason enough though :)
I am new to the game, having only recently finding DD1 and completing that. I think lots of these moves have been changed or nerfed as I don’t think all of them do all of these things now. Very useful though as I am struggling a bit

From my understanding either you get an additional turn or you get stunned (no inbetween). This sounds like there would be no expected value, do I miss something or do you just pray to RNGsus?
how the hell people argue against take aim? crit is 150% dmg at max value, take aim spends a turn and gives you 2x150% turns, that 3 turns of 100% damage+dodge. you also get an extra round while using grapeshot+power
one question that's been bothering me. Anyone knows how riposte damage is determined? Since there's no character base damage in DD2, what is riposte damage based off? Is there a hidden number that's not shown?
4:36. Either what you are saying is wrong or the tutorial is. According to the tutorial, the 20% resist piercing on crit only applies to dots, not debuff, move or stun. Personally I believe you are right, but I have yet to see proof of it. If anyone reading this knows of a clip that can prove it, please link it.
