  • I cleaned this headstone and the customer asked if the lettering was going to come back!!! I was hoping it was going to be visible once it dried but that wasn’t the case… so I went back and painted in the lettering! And I think it looks great!

    There is a long forgotten cemetery in Irondale Missouri, very old. I only know what's there. Cause I found some headstones in the fence line between it and the Railroad. Tracks.
    when I was a kid.

    Why would they have frosted the letters instead of deep cutting is beyond me. Both are sandblasted processes, so not like it would be anymore labor intensive. It just seems like a needlessly half-assed approach to monument lettering. Thankfully, you came along and repainted it so it's legible again. Nice job!

      Yea… I always wonder the same thing… it’s really all about what the customer wants. If something looks nicer than something else to someone that’s what they will go with.

    Razor blades work fine for removing the excess paint on those polished stones.

    I was walking the fence line if my little country cemetery -244 graves. As I looked just over the fence in the thicket I saw a headstone. I have to get it back in the cemetery somehow. I'll get help because at my age I can't do it alone. I''m making slow, but steady progress.

    You need to be very careful, granite monuments have imperfections of quartz and other elements that allow the paint to seep in lower than the granite surface . The paint will remain in these imperfections when you scrape it off

    • @Headstoneman
      @Headstoneman  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup! This technique only works on granite that has a very smooth polished surface

    There is a difference between paint and pigment. Pigment is a concentrated color in a small amount of binder. Paint is pigment that is in a binder that is intended to adhere. Be sure to get paint…

    • @Headstoneman
      @Headstoneman  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You would need to call a monument lettering company to do that. The letters are usually cut in with sandblasting equipment and would have to be filled with granite dust before creating the new letter

    I have few questions.
    Can this be done on frosted granite as well or polished only ?
    Also can the paint you used be bought in black as well?

    • @Headstoneman
      @Headstoneman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This process only works with polished granite… the rougher stuff should be done using molasses to deter paint from binding to the raised rough surfaces.

    • @dwaynemerry6996
      @dwaynemerry6996 ปีที่แล้ว

      Molasses is the cheap fix. To do it properly iit needs to be done by a real professional. It gets taken to the shop, repainted, the letters then get filled with a clay. The paint gets sandblasted away and the panel gets re-hilited. Then just rinse the clay out of the letters. Brand new

    • @Headstoneman
      @Headstoneman  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The molasses trick is a trick that’s used by professionals…. Which is exactly where I learned it. The result is the same with much less time and material invested

    • @Headstoneman
      @Headstoneman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pet shop, it’s usually for in birdcages. A razor blade won’t do the job with anywhere near the efficiency. Just make sure you let the paint dry thoroughly before removing.

      A hockey puck, a nice rag and some acetone. Also it's best to use monument paint if you want it to last

  • @kendrahutto1053

    Would this not work if you just used a rag and wiped it while it's still wet? No disrespect intended.

    • @Headstoneman
      @Headstoneman  ปีที่แล้ว

      No… it’s oil based paint so wiping while it’s still wet is just going to smear it… also waiting for it to dry and removing it will help make sure you get the paint out of all the little nooks and crannies that aren’t the lettering.

      @@Headstoneman Thanks. Is it ok to do on a cremation stone? So a stone that lies flat on the ground rather than standing upright. Just thinking if it would wash out more easily being a flat stone.

    • @Headstoneman
      @Headstoneman  ปีที่แล้ว

      @annieanonymous611 it really depends on what the finish of the stone is like… that determines how you paint it. Putting paint on the stone is no problem… but the method of applying it is different if it’s not a smooth polished finish.
