1970... I am 16 years old at the "Strawberry Festival" in O.C. Calif.. and saw this band live. After doing a show in San Diego, on the bus to L.A. they were told about the festival, so they stopped, seeing a stage Ozzy Volunteered to play a couple, they had their guitars and a drum kit was there on stage... So.. Unscheduled, unannounced, unexpected. Black Sabbath did.... "Iron Man"... "Paranoid"... "The Wizard"... "War Pigs"... to about a crowd of 5,000.... It was awesome. Right place at the right time.
Me too, except I was in San Diego for that show. Great time to be in Southern Cal. We had Led Zep, Rolling Stones, and in 73 we had early Lynyrd Skynyrd at San Diego State (free concert).
The producer: More cowbell? Bill: No, one is perfect. Bill was right. I love that one cowbell hit. The Wizard is a top Sabbath tune, instant classic and forever cool.

cant emphasize enough what this sounded like 53yrs. ago......again, i love your reactions....when this came out i had to only listen when my father was out. he couldnt take it!!! thank god for 8 tracks in the car.....
Tony Iommi always with those gut punch riffs. He's the driving force behind the band. He's stated that if he hadn't come in with ideas, the songs would have never gotten written. Best power riffs in the bizz.
I'm with you. Oz over Ronnie, Bon over Brian, Gillan over Coverdale, Roth over Haggar. Each replacement was phenomenal in their own right, but the organic chemistry is missing.
@@ppaulisdeadd5879 , if you’re old enough and grew up with the birth of Sabbath, you would agree with me. Obviously you’re not old enough to understand.
Then I'm sorry to say that you weren't really listening. It def wasn't the same but as long as riff-master Tony was there, it was still Sabbath. And remember, Ward was gone also. All 4 members have their own distinct sound and should be able to be picked out of a sound line-up easily. The Ozzman was most definitely a perfect fit and extremely important to the band, no doubt - love that man's entire career - but take a listen to the first ten seconds of War Pigs and you instantly "identify" them as Sabbath, without any vocals. I understand exactly what you mean and feel. I lost interest also after Heaven and Hell - which was brilliant. I can't even name one album or song, I don't think, after that album.
Paranoid came out less than a year later. The first 4 albums in 2 years. The blueprint for heavy metal and the difference between S/T and Vol 4 is staggering. Everyone should listen to the first 4 Sabbath albums in a row at least once in their lives. Brilliant. Love the channel!
The blues was largely overlooked in that time period. It was a few musicians from a small island called Britain that discovered the blues and realised its potential. That’s when bands such as the Rolling Stones, led zeppelin, black sabbath, pink Floyd, the Who etc. started to emerge and brought the blues to global dominance in the 60s and 70s.
"dude from The Yardbirds" was Keith Relf, a phenomenal harmonica player, a good singer, excellent stage presence and charisma... The Yardbirds are very underrated
I'm sure l told you that they're one of my top 3 favorite bands, along with Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, saw them all several times back in the 70's. Best times of my life❤
When i hear that harmonica I get chills up and down my spine, because I know what's coming. First time I heard this album I had the same reaction, it never stops.
Love this song! All though I was into rock when I was young, I wasn't really into Sabbath apart from paranoid and only in recent years started listening to there stuff. My god, they are absolutely genius. Why on earth didn't I discover them before.
Che said it best. It’s easy to follow the logic of their riffs and hooks. Normally an album that was recorded in a few days, paid little to make, then shopped around to various labels only to be denied would never make it. At least one producer had the balls and a R&R soul, took a chance, pressed a few thousand copies and changed Rock forever. I still remember this first Sabbath release always having a very cool “underground” vibe even after millions sold. Cover art is perfect. 🤘
The next tracks after The Wizard should be played together as track 3 - Wasp/Behind the Wall of Sleep/Basically/N.I.B. and then track 4 - Wicked World and finally track 5 - A Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning. Sometimes they have these broken up in listings.
EXACTLY! It can’t be stressed enough when there’s a 2 or 3 part song, and it happens all the time one reaction channels cause the reaction crews won’t realize the difference and people often post them from recording broken up into separate tracks, though even on a CD the songs will still flow normally like the vinyl would.
Hey guys, I've been listening to these guys since 1974. I can't get enough. Hey next up on the album is N.I.B, don't freak out, it's an unconventional love song, you guys will love it.
I really enjoy watching you guys give reactions. I remember as a teenager sitting in my bedroom listening to this album with the headphones on. You guys reminded me of that memory watching you.
When I was in high school in the 70s I heard a demo tape of Ozzy playing Blues on the harmonica. He is an exceptional harmonica player. And the one hit on the cowbell after the first verse makes the whole song
I was a teenager when this was released the album front cover got your attention then you opened the gatefold and inside was this poem. Still falls the rain, the veils of darkness shroud the blackened trees, which, contorted by some unseen violence, shed their tired leaves, and bend their boughs toward a gray earth of severed bird wings. Among the grasses, poppies bleed before a gesticulating death, and young rabbits, born dead in traps, stand motionless, as though guarding the silence that surrounds and threatens to engulf all those that would listen. Mute birds, tired of repeating yesterdays terrors, huddle together in the recesses of dark corners, heads turned from the dead, black swan that floats upturned in a small pool in the hollow. There emerges from this pool a faint, sensual mist, that traces its way upwards to caress the feet of the headless martyr's statue whose only achievement was to die too soon, and who couldn't wait to loose. The cataract of darkness forms fully, the long black night begins, yet still by the lake a young girl waits. Unseeing she believes herself unseen, she smiles faintly at the distant tolling bell, and the still falling rain. Then you put on the Album to hear the rain and thunder followed by the dark foreboding sound of the title track Black Sabbath the cover the poem the track the name Black Sabbath all fitted perfectly with the vibe. Sabbath being a religious day and the black inferring it was a religious day for the devil. They got the idea for the name from a cinema across the street from the band's rehearsal room showing the 1963 horror film Black Sabbath and made the decision to focus on writing material in an attempt to create the musical equivalent of horror films.
Black Sabbath was so cool they made a song like this clocked in at, as La noted, 4:20, before "420" was even a thang! Ahead of their time in genres as well, since of course they were arguably THE founders OF "Heavy Metal."
One of many best parts of y’all’s reactions are for me remembering or trying to remember what I was thinking and doing the first time I heard whatever song you’re diving into. Love your breakdowns and knowledge of instruments and producing. Just wanted to letcha know 🤷🏻♂️🤘🏼❤️

Not long before this album was recorded they were a heavy Blues Rock band and called themselves The Polka Tulk Blues Band - they even had a sax player and a slide guitarist!
There’s a Chicano funk/rock band called Brownout that has two albums worth of Sabbath covers under the name “Brown Sabbath”. They do some absolutely filthy, funky, versions of classic Sabbath songs. I believe Prince hired them to play at his birthday party once, before he passed. Seriously worth checking out, especially if you dig percussion!

Truth! Bought this album (still have it) when released and that one hit is still a feature of this song all these yrs later. 👈🤘😎

Theres two in the song lmao

Bill Ward is easily one of the most underrated drummers in the history of Rock music.

My Favorite from Black Sabbath. Ozzy on the Harmonica is evil ominous wicked and sinister.... Beautiful.
Bill ward is a monster on the drums, all amazing musicians 🤘🤘🤘
Own it!!! Wear it proudly. Black Sabbath is one of the greatest bands of all time. ❤❤❤
One of my favorites for sure!!!!! Godfathers of METAL!!!!! Thank you Ozzy, Bill, Geezer and Tony for creating some kickass music I!!!!!
Ozzy doing work on the harmonica! Best band ever along with Zeppelin. Another great reaction
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Black Sabbath
3. Everyone else.
"Damn, are they my favorite band?" 6:25
"You love Black Sabbath, man"
"are they my favorite?"
Yes Che, mine too. ❤❤
Yeah that was funny 🤣
Drumming is so good in this song (whole album really). A big step up from most of what we were getting in 1970.
"The WIZARD"
Misty morning, clouds in the sky
Without warning, the wizard walks by
Casting his shadow, weaving his spell
Long grey cloak, tinkling bell
Never talking
Just keeps walking
Cursing his magic
Evil power disappears
Demons worry when the wizard is near
He turns tears into joy
Everyone's happy when the wizard walks by
Never talking
Just keeps walking
Spreading his magic
Sun is shining, clouds have gone by
All the people give a happy sigh
He has passed by, giving his sign
Left all the people feeling so fine
Never talking
Just keeps walking
Spreading his magic
Thank you
This is the album that made this 15 year old girl fall in love with them in 1974.
14 yrs old for me, same feeling!
13 for me, incredible..
If I'm not mistaken, I believe this album was recorded in about 8 hours and cost like 1200 bucks to produce. Incredible
Black Sabbath invented every metal riff ever!
Thank you! 🤘
Sabbath are the Holy Grail of hard rock/ heavy metal.
Sabotage & Sabbath Bloody Sabbath will be the gems 👍
They're my favorite band of all time. Love your all's commentary.
💯
And it just gets better.
Wait till you hear the groove on Hand Of Doom. Good Lord ❤
