What I love about Sabbath is that they always have sections in their songs for Bill Ward to display his chops and his iconic drum fills.
Great point , George .Underrated, for sure , but Bill takes a backseat to nobody. He is up there with. Ian Paice , Appice, Carl Palm er , Watts, Moon , Peart, Bomham etc. He rates with the best .

Having been living in London at the time, I can tell you, Sabbath LITERALLY scared people with their music back then. Clubs refused to allow them back.

Geezer Butlers bass tone and playing besides being a primary lyrical contributor is sorely under appreciated.
Ozzy play the Harmonica really well. He plays it on Black Sabbath "The Wizard." One of my favorite songs by them.
Sabbath is more popular and influential today than they were in the 70's, mainly due to the radio not playing their music. Eventually they started playing Paranoid and Iron Man, but unless you could afford to buy the albums or you had a cool older cousin that bought them, you really didn't know how great they were until years later. As kids we had limited funds and there was so much great music being released, we really had to pick and choose what we bought. Being played on the radio had a huge impact on what we would buy...
Plus the great live performances of Sabbath slipped when Ozzy was drinking heavily. So the propaganda by evangelical haters matched with some bad tours hurt in addition to FM radio stations worried about sponsor boycotts. Thank God for 8 track tapes and vinyl. We rocked out to Sabbath, Floyd, Zeppelin, Who, SRV, ZZ Top and Rush like it was a career.
I believe Ozzy solo helped propel sabbath to the next level with new generations too. Back in the day exactly right Their air play on FM was limited to paranoid and iron man! We had to work hard to here Sabbath back then !
More Sabbath, please! The only instrument I've heard Ozzy play is the harmonica on The Wizard from their 1970 debut album.

Ozzy played the harmonica in concert a few times, even when he wasn't supposed to LoL! Unfortunately I didn't see Sabbath until Ozzy was getting himself kicked out being drunk. He sometimes forgot lyrics and played his harmonica. Same thing when he had his Mr Crowley tour. Him and Davie Lee Roth were trying to see who could tank a show drunk faster in that era. Roth 'won' but I think because Sabbath had such better songs Ozzy's drinking got more press.
I came hear to say the same thing. That’s a great song also. Can’t really go wrong with almost any song on the first 4 albums. Maybe even 6. I’m not sure you can say that about any other band.

No offense, but I never heard Bill Ward was underrated. He's a god on the drums. Neil Peart may be the most proficient, fast and excellent probably the SRV of drums. But feel, talent and musical ear? Someone tells me Bill Ward is Da GOAT on skins, I'm already liking that person. Nobody underrates Bill Ward. He's a legend.

These guys to me are the fathers of Metal. Great musicians, intriguing lyrics, distinctive vocals. Wasn't as big a fan of their 2.0 lineup, but loved the original
Heaven and Hell is a great album. Once Ozzy lost his battle with sobriety, coming up with Ronnie James Dio, what?!! That's such a big score to stay relevant. Gotta give Tommy the credit. We got to see Dio be propelled to where he deserved to be. Ozzy is arguably the voice of Black Sabbath I mean War Pigs is all Ozzy among so many other songs that just wouldn't be the same. But Heaven and Hell could be Sabbath's 3rd or 4th best album. And that ain't chicken feed. Dio was a legend.
@@Greg-io1ip It took me 30 years to figure out what the difference between Ozzy and Dio was, and for me, it's this: Dio is *clearly* the better singer technically. RJD could have sung opera if he'd had a mind to. Ozzy sometimes doesn't even quite hit the notes, and Dio never misses. Yet I prefer Ozzy as a vocalist. Why? Because Ozzy sounds as if he's always on the brink of madness, like he's unstable. I feel something when Ozzy sings. It's compelling. When Dio sings, I can hear the greatness, I can hear the talent, I can hear the hours of practice...but I don't feel anything. It sounds very clinical. It's impressive, but it isn't compelling. Dio is an engineer, Ozzy is an architect.
But that's just my opinion. I know that other people prefer Dio to Ozzy, and that's fine.

Man..Portland, Maine..summer 1971..Paranoid is brand new, we're the 1st gig on the tour..nobody knew who they were..smoked a joint with Ozzie while they were setting up..Badfinger opened, Sabbath was 2nd, and...Mungo Jerry was the headliner. I was 3 feet from the stage..oh, yeah...
I know you've done War Pigs, but there is a video of them playing it live in Paris in 1970 that you guys would love. Bill Ward committing a straight up assault on his drum kit.

One of the best loudest concerts had the opportunity to attend was the 1980 Black and Blue concert. It was at the outside ball stadium in Arizona. Molly Hatchet followed by Blue Oyster Cult ending with Black Sabbath. All three had combined their sound systems and sound tec's. We were up front on the infield but the music was too loud so fortunately we moved back. Nearing the end of Sabbath's long set a monsoon blew in in with 70 + mph winds. Sabbath didn't quit playing despite the rain and lightning only when the wall of wind hit and tore up the elevated stage with all the mixing equipment and toppling a wall of speakers.
Our group ,11 of us came prepared with tarps. We sat there watching the panicked people Stampede each other for cover. But even while the storm was raging they were screaming on the loud speakers save your tickets will come back and do it again.
and despite already giving us our money's worth they came back and did it again for free.
Not bad for a $12 ticket. Lol

I saw the same tour, they had a no name for the opening band but no cared, as the Dio Sabbath and BOC blew us away at the Lebanon Valley Speedway. Same deal, they brought both bands PAs and for once I was glad to be back a ways, they had it cranked! Great show and tour, I saw them twice together, killer shows.

People dont realize sabbath is the heaviest rock. But they got Funk no other heavy bands get that. . Also thier music is a work together- it sounds great because drums bass guitar and vocals are meant to work together. Its Not about trying to be faster or louder than the next guy.

Such a great groove. Bill & Geezer are definitely one of my fave rhythm sections(that don't seem to get as much Love as they deserve, along with McVie & Fleetwood, imho). Just a few hours 'til my weekend starts, and this is a good start. Have a good one, lads!
You know it. Geezer and Bill know exactly where to transition. Geddy and Neil gave Alex the paintbrush same way Bill and Geezer gave it to Tommy. Although Tommy is probably the actual Wizard Himself.

The drummer is Bill Ward, who stated that he listened to quite a lot of jazz in his youth--it shows. Also, before "Heavy Metal" became the universal term for this kind of music, Sabbath and their contemporaries were described variously as "Downer Rock" and "Atomic Blues". I really wish the latter term had stuck.

This rabbit hole is vast. 40+ years later I still find new things throughout their catalog. If you really want a deep dive listen to Stargazer from Rainbow. If you hear a harmonica that is Ozzy. This song "Fairies Wear Boots" is related to an incident between skin head punk rockers wearing combat boots back in the day and anyone with long hair like all of the guys in the band, namely the bass player Geezer Butler who had trouble at a soccer game.

Many have mentioned the Live 1970 Paris set... Trust me when I tell you you will be quite happy if do these songs. Even the whole 40 min set in its entirety -- I know that is super long and seems excessive -- but no reactors have done it, and you would a) love it, and b) make a lot of us very happy...

One song suggestion is the song "Black Sabbath" -- which, try to imagine a horror movie made only in audio... a horror song... Their live version is spectacular... They all get off, and Ozzie's performance is legendary... Pretty please 🙂
They are all special musicians in such a unique way. All virtuosos in composing songs from beginning to end. It"s bluessy, jazzy, hard rock, metal, and it all fits together seamlessly. Ozzy"s voice is powerful and clear like an air raid siren.
Music is the common ground that brings everyone together regardless of race ,or economic background. It brings me joy to watch you guys enjoy an entirely different genre of music. I don't know where you guys live but, I would hang with you guys and listen to music. In fact I could turn you guys onto all kinds music.

I love these guys' reactions so much. They may be listening to the music of my youth for the first time, but they are obviously musicians. They get the tempo changes and how difficult it is for a band to sound so tight in the midst of complexity like Black Sabbath.

Besides The Warning, this is my favorite Sabbath track. This song brings together so much of their musical prowess.
Black Sabbeth was the firsr heavy metal band years before heavy metal was a genre.

The reason for that deep, dark sound is Tony Iommi's industrial accident, where he had the fingertips of his middle and ring fingers chopped off. He thought he would never play guitar, again, but he persevered by using lighter gauge strings, and by tuning down one and one-half steps from E to C#. There are documentaries on TH-cam that explain how Black Sabbath got its sound.

For about twenty-five years I was a Home Theater salesman at several AV companies, and I used this song at FULL volume, but a live version I found, as a demo song when someone wanted a "Rock" demo. Sold a lot of equipment that way. Love Black Sabbath, finally got to see the original crew in 1999. Still rocking hard at that point. Drummer Bill Ward was a revelation live, so much POWER!
From day to day my favourite Sabbath song may change, but more often than not this is the one.
In 1978 I was introduced to Black Sabbath, and they forever Changed my Music Preference. I've been fortunate to have Experienced Sabbath and Ozzy with Randy Rhodes live in Colorado USA.
Still One of my Favorite Metal Bands in 2023.

Progressive music isn't simply about change ups, but rather addition of sounds to create walls of sound, and rebuilding those. Groundation is a progressive reggae band.

The whole album needs to be reacted to, every single song, including Bill Wards drum solo Rat Salad and the other changeup, Planet Caravan.
What you should do is the first album, everything is developed from it, including their self titled, signature song and the amazing suite on side 2 that nobody reacts to, it is one of Tony Iommi's defining moments and by the end, you knew something big was happening. Do Sleeping Village into Warning, an amazing jam and musical onslaught. Iommi said years later they just wanted to make heavier music than anyone else. Mission accomplished! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎶

What’s great about Sabbath is they loved American southern blues and you can tell.
Listen to a few songs each from the first 4 albums and you will hear the progression of heavy metal and all of its sub genres. The differences and growth from album to album is amazing.

I saw them at the Dallas Convention Center in 1978. It was intense. One of the loudest concerts I've ever been to. It is right on the edge of painful. Not kidding Ozzy and the band were in good form!.

They were "progressive" for back then, late 60's to 1978 was their best years. Nobody sounded anything like them. They also are one of the main inspirations for what became "Metal"

When Ozzy got booted from Black Sabbath he came back strong with "Blizzard of Ozz" - Sabbath released "Heaven and Hell" with Ronnie James Dio on vocals.
