    MiniLED is definitely something to get excited about until microLED becomes affordable. LCDs can also suffer from image retention which can be similar to OLED burn-in but is much more rare and usually fixable. That said, this is the 1st gen of miniLED TVs coming from big brands (apart from TCL which you rarely find in Europe) so I'm a bit cautious. Usually things are significantly improved when 2nd gen hits and I know too well how it feels to be an early adopter. Even so, it is exciting to see how things are evolving.

      Ridiculous comment, now here's one from someone who doesn't replace their TV every 12 months. I have a 2017 55" B7 OLED and it started to show burn in (TH-cam scrub bar and what looks like maybe an icon from a game or app).
      Before you say it I watched mixed media (live broadcasts, movies and games), always had pixel shifter on, backlight at 70, in addition to pixel refreshing once a month and although it is also hooked up to my PC on a second screen I run Actual Multiple Monitors with a time out of 60 seconds (TV will then go to screensaver) as I was so paranoid about burn in.
      Even with all this babysitting errors like this can still manifest and what's worse I actually got the TV in April 2018 (discount on the outgoing last year's model), so it's not even 3 years old.

    The one thing nobody mentions about OLED is no screen flicker. Granted, most LED TVs flicker so fast you can't see it, but it does cause eye strain (for me, at least). I notice a big difference using a flickerless monitor compared to an LED TV. That being said, Sony LED TVs tend to be the best in terms little or no backlight flicker.

      This is true, I am using the Sony x720e 43" 4k tv as a monitor and its really good, rtings rates it as flicker free, my eyes notice flicker easily so its mandatory for me, still waiting for a good upgrade candidate and these mini led tv's look promising as long as they can be produced flicker free. The sad part about tv's is they tend to be 50"+ now, not seeing as many 40" options like the past

    • @PainterVierax
      @PainterVierax 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexandrusava642 easy fix is pushing the brightness to its maximum. The PWM signal should be a straight line so no flicker anymore.

    Times have changed a little this year. I managed to get the 48" C1, for just under $1000. The pricing is definitely heading in the right direction and I definitely think its kind of in the mainstream price range now. It was a black "Friday" (was actually the whole of November) deal but still, it's one of the best deals on TVs I have ever gotten. I had a 2020 TU7000 ($450) before as my main monitor temporarily after building my PC because of budget constraints (Don't worry it's not wasted - it's in a different room now) and the OLED is definitely more than twice as good, especially for gaming! In November 2018 I purchased a Samsung Q9FN 75" (QLED). I have been very happy with it and I just saw this video on it! Still quite an amazing TV - backlight on level 50 lights up my living room like a tiny sun. I am also very happy about the external One Connect Box. The design is perhaps a bit dated for a "flagship" model today. In the future, perhaps 2 years from now, I might replace it with new tech. It seems it might not be OLED.

      Problem is that contrast is the one advantage that OLED has above LED. Currently, I'd say OLED is a dying technology. In a few years, those who want a premium experience will go for Micro LED. And those who don't have the money for that will go for Mini LED, which is significantly cheaper than OLED and will offer a contrast almost as good, while having far higher brightness.
      LG seems to be trying to make OLED cheaper, but it's taking them a while and whether they can offer the same quality as current OLED panels remains to be seen (though I think it's likely that they won't). Even then it'll likely still be more expensive than Mini LED. I don't really see OLED overcoming its barriers before LCD technology catches up. I'm glad you mentioned the local dimming algorithm, because it's absolutely KEY to mini LED technology working, and is an IMPOSSIBLY BIG processing overhead. I think the mini LED TVs we'll end up with will be far from perfect, and OLED will remain the only solution for great contrast. It's just such an elegant technology.

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It shouldn't have a big processing overhead. You'd just analyze the frame, and activate them based on a specific brightness level. It's as easy as creating a mathematical curve to compensate for color differences. The REAL problem is it's still never going to be as good as OLED. And the only real problem for OLED is making panels with 100% functioning pixels. All companies really need to do is to segment panel production into smaller more efficient groups to lessen production losses on large screens. So for example, making only 100x56 pixel panels (for 16:9 resolution), and allowing them to be stacked/plugged in side by side. This can be done virtually seamlessly by testing each panel part before assembling it onto a substrate that will be the screen covering, which will ensure everything is seamlessly lined up. So a pixel on a 100x56 OLED panel is bad? You throw it out, with a very small loss, maybe you lose 50 cents in production cost instead of $500 for having to throw out 4K pixels worth of screen because some pixels are dead. This would make OLED infinitely cheaper, and modular, allowing them to use a single fabrication process to make every type of screen resolution.

Chose C9 over CX for brighter panel (and less aggressive ABL), DTS support, and true HDMI 2.1. the only thing I miss from CX is 120 hz BFI, but according to end users it is apparently not that necessary due to the near instant pixel response time of OLEDs. Burn in is indeed a major issue for OLED's, especially after the 1.5 - 2 year mark. Many that I know have had burn in issues and now it's finally happened to me. A good 30% of the red pixels around the center of my 65" C7 have started fading slowly over time. It's left very noticeable blotches and is also making white skin tones look a pale zombie green. Everywhere else looks totally fine, just not in the middle of the display.
    I've been running pixel refresher at all the recommended times and have also been very cautious about static images. My guess is that a static blob from people talking center screen has formed over time. So OLED buyers beware.
    I'm excited about these new TV's though. Glad to see comparable options come to market because I didn't want to go OLED again for my replacement.

I feel sorry for people still thinking OLED has burn-in issues. LCD has TONS of issues, which are present on DAY ONE. This is why OLED is used in all flagship products now, except for Samsung which still scams it's customers with garbage LCD, however they are doing MicroLED and OLED soon too. My C9 looks as impressive today as it did 1st time I turned it on. Jawdropping image quality. Never ever going back to LCD thats for sure. LCD will be considered entry level only soon. Cheap and dated tech which relies 100% on proper backlighting but even with FALD and tons of zones it does not even come close to OLED (but costs more when FALD with several hundred zones are used). looking for a new TV is a nightmare these days with all the fancy jargon so start with what size you want or need its the most important thing.
    eg if your living room is 15 feet from one side to the other you will need an 75"-80" TV if you get a 65" it will be to small.
    the second thing is the same as it ever was, native smooth motion, a lot of TVs have clever software to smooth it out but in native mode there is blurring in fast movement. the best way to ensure smooth movement is haveing a very fast quad prossesor and a high refresh rate.
    basicly the cheep 4K TVs will have that problem and have a 50hz panel and a slower CPU-GPU so look very carefully at the specs the minimum is a quad core chip and a 60hz panel.

      Bingo. Just the massive PC market is going to give Mini-LED and Micro-LED the leg up for market dominance. As you said, PC use cases have so many goddamn static elements that you're extremely likely to cause if not burn in, really ugly image retention. And things like Automatic Backlight Limiters are a no-go for PC use. That would be hugely disruptive and distracting. It also doesn't help that OLEDs do not have better text reproduction than LCDs due to their RGBW subpixel structure.

      I just returned a q90a which was mini led 50 inch.
      But Samsung decided to swap out the va for ips to save money 2019 qleds where better than anything now.
      Oled is the way to go.
      Unless you can find a old plasma.
      Don't be tricked into the fancy tech nonsense a good TV from 10 years ago will wipe the floor with most led garbage including mini led

    Excellent run down on the technologies. We spent a ton of money on a 75" 8k QLED in 2019, which we absolutely love. Great picture, and with our sound bar, excellent cinematic sound. Undoubtedly some of these are now better, but by the time we change TV again, which might be 5 years or more, who knows what technology we'll be talking about then! P.S. Congrats on the million subs...well deserved 👏

    Loving OLED but one of the biggest weakness is also the reflection. In your video you see the reflection of you lightning and when you standing playing on ps5. So if mini led have the same or almost the same darkness thrn de mini led is far better for almost every user. Because not many people have a very dark room where they watch tv

    problem with some OLED is that while black are true blacks, in some instances TVs have troubles with black crush ending up darkening even ares that was not supposed to be dark, or troubles with lifted blacks which yes your OLED is able to display true blacks, but in some instances may end up struggling with shades of a gray..

    • @nathanpickering6742
      @nathanpickering6742 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lg has bigger problems with black crush. Sony has very little. Even then, if you do get a bit, you can just raise the gamma a bit and it usually goes away. Grey blacks don't happen too often on OLEDs but it can happen depending on the content.

    I think a lot of OLED innovation has been in transparent panels, bendable/rollable, and they’ve been getting thinner.
    LG display showed off a prototype of a bendable TV so you can have a curved tv for gaming and a flat TV for movies all in one. We’ll see if any tv manufacturers actually pick that up though.
    LED/LCD innovation is focused on catching up to OLED picture quality while OLED innovation is mostly focused on form factor.

    I purchased the Panasonic TX58AX802 with a 58 inch IPS screen back in 2014. It cost me £2500 and was their flagship. The picture quality superb and the audio, outstanding. Anyway, my close friend, also in the trade, advised that as my current premium set was 8 years old and technology had moved on, I should update. He said go OLED but not the pinnacle of the range, the additional expense was not worth the minor performance. I took his advice. Got a mid range Panasonic 65 inch OLED. Whilst I still maintain that my old 58 inch LED set can still hold it’s own, the new 65 inch OLED is night and day better. What surprised me most is there is absolutely no issue with brightness. The audio reproduction is lacking, but my friend knew I had a premium sound system to augment it. I paid almost half what I paid for the IPS screen 8 years ago and benefit from a vastly superior picture. The screen on my iPhone is OLED and has no issues, except in extremely bright direct sunlight. My iPad Pro is mini LED and is sublime. Yes, you can cause bloating if you push it to extremes, but in day to day use and real world applications, there are no issues.
    I think rival and competing technologies are healthy and help push the industry ever forward. Ultimately, whichever topology you opt for will be influenced by your needs, preferences and the size of your wallet.
    My only regret? I should have gone for a 77 inch OLED not it’s snaller sibling.

    Going to have to wait for micro-led if you want to match the quality of OLED.
    I’ll probably give micro-led a shot when it comes around at a reasonable price but I’m sticking with OLED for now.
    OLED tech itself seems like it could be cool for futuristic display stuff(windows that are also displays, a display that wraps around your wrist). The innovation in OLED is in areas not really needed in TVs such as the bendable and transparent displays.
    P.S. loving my 55” LG CX. I honestly watch more content than ever before just because I want to admire the tv lol
