I call it a DRAW! Not all blocks are created equal. Without doing the test several times you can't come to a positive conclusion. A second, third or fouth test likely will have different results. Winner would be the one that did the most damage repeatedly.
Need to redo and have that mosin shot more center. The projectile skewed to the right and could have done more damage I have both rifles and my 54 took down a tree and i finished it off with a 5) beowulf
that 24" 308 CMMG is a great fire arm. the longer barrel definately get the most out of the round. I sure you are gonna have a wonderful time hunting with it. maybe in one of your future vids you can demo its long distance accuracy.
Cinder block test are the best comparison videos. Put the blocks sideways, like they are in structures, and then put a block of balistic gel on the other side, to see how much deflection each round has afterwards. Yes, it's way more work for you, but I think it would look neat. Thanks.
It's ok we call them cinder blocks down here in the south. Good video really don't know a whole lot about the 7.62 by 54. I've recently purchased an AR-10 chambered in 7.62 by 51 or 308 and still learning about it. I'm really an old-school kind of guy this still wants to go back to his bolt action rifle however I do like the AR-10 or you can just let him fly. Keep up the good work man and God bless you and your family.
The blocks could be either cinder blocks or concrete blocks. it depends on who manufacturered it. Some block manufacturers use a combination bottom ash and fly ash both sourced from coil burning power plants ( coil ash is cinder according to Webster's) along with stone screenings and type 2 cement to make cinder block's. Cement block's are typically type 2 cement, stone and a product called stay light to reduce weight.
In this test the .308 definitely was the winner. I have a Ruger SR762 and a Sako in .308. The Sako can drive nails from long distances and the Ruger is a lot of semi-auto fun. I've said this to you a million times..... It's smart to go with US military rounds because of their availability and abundance. I have plenty of different guns but my go to guns are chambered in 223/5.56 and 308/7.62x51. It keeps down the cost of the ammo and those rounds are always available (except during covid-19). That .308 looks real nice, which rifle are you going to use for your long distance shooting? I've seen your long distance shooting videos but I'm not sure if have chosen one specific rifle yet Great video brother. God bless.
Video paused before the test: my prediction is very similar results, considering these two are near ballistic twins. Any variation should come down to bullet design.
I am blessed to have a Maurer 8mm. It was my Grandfather's. I have been checking to see if it was a ww2 conversion, but I think it was manufactured a few years after ww2. I shot my first deer with it near Helps Canyon, Oregon.
I think the results may have been a bit different with a clean shot of the mosin but as others stated, it would take multiple shots to find consistent results to compare but I’d be curious to see how they compare at range. Good video nevertheless.
Nice video, but I would have used a TulAmmo 308 in addition to this side by side comparison. The TulAmmo rounds are usually underpowered in my opinion. I enjoy shooting both calibers as well.
AnimalLechter I agree! Both rounds should preferably be from the same manufacturer so that the loads should be similar. Tula is typically underpowered compared to Winchester or S&B. Also, the Tula power from round to round is not as consistent, so more blocks are required for an accurate test.
I disagree, in a caliber comparison, we should be comparing what is the typical loading for each rifle, and in this case, it's either surplus or newer Russian steel for 54r, and I would use m80 ball for 308(or 150gr fmj if it's commercial 308win)
It would be interesting to see this comparison made with Silver Bear bi-metal jacket, 174 grain 54R, vs the heaviest .308 round you can find. I suspect the 54R is probably more efficient with a heavier bullet. That being said, I really like the .308 and that CMMG of yours is gorgeous.
Enjoyed the concrete block test, I mean cinder block.. So confusing but good video... My bet was on the .308. Hunting last fall with an AR setup similar to yours. Keep them coming...
Both pack a punch! I’ve been watching people with those old Mosins think I may try to find one at least it will be a conversation piece! Love the CMMG but really like that Bazooka green that you have on your 450 socom
Looked to me like the 54r dumped more energy in the first 2. It's like a 5.56 vs 7.69 test. The 7.62 is a bigger fist and the 5.56 is a better high speed slicer. Same here.
You can get Winchester white box for the 54R round, you just have to look around online for them. I stumbled across some in a local hardware store a few years back.

another fun video to watch! obviously not a scientific comparison and not intended to be. there is no 'fair' when comparing different calibers unless you use the best round in both. but then you have to figure out best for what. ignore those who cry foul. personally i like to use a 208gr or heavier for the mosin to break stuff. but its all great fun regardless
Nice! Considering the "Age" gap in cartridge design and powders.... They are close enough to be equal! On another note... Liked the .22 shoot out.... I've had a M&P .22 c for a few years and like Paul I just have been a Glock fan... but the G44 that you two have been plinking around with looks like a nice unit... i'm going to rent one at the range
Yeah well it's a decent short range cartridge. But it's kinda like the 6.5Creedmoor vs 308Win. With the difference that the .35Whelen actually uses up more ressources and still falls behind the 308Win at distance
I shot a dead tree that was 2 feet in diameter (not circumference) with my 54r from about 50 yards, the bullet tumbled through tree and was sticking out of the back of the tree backwards. Use the surplus ammo and the Mosin is unstoppable.
7.62x54 rimmed vs 7.62x63 or 3006. Russia used a 148 grain and America used 150 grain both 2700 fps. 54r had a bore of .311 and the 06 had .308 bore so they're almost the same the only big difference is the cartridge
You ever see the 82 caliber air rifle here on TH-cam or the 58 caliber air rifle or the 12 gauge air rifle highly encourage you to look it up on TH-cam it's amazing that a lot of videos I've seen here on TH-cam shooting cinder blocks what different calibers very few of them do the damage that I seen of the 58 caliber air rifle the name of the video is 58 caliber air gun versus cinder block if you're interested in looking it up
I knew it would be really close, but I kinda thought the 7.62x51 would have just a little more power because I think it's loaded to a slightly higher PSI than the 7.62x54R. I'd almost bet that your 24 inch barrel will penetrate more, using the same ammo, than my 16 inch barrel will. Pretty sure yours is more accurate too.
What year of manufacture is your Mosin? I see it has the laminated wood stock. There are harder to find for us collectors, and usually bring a higher price. I have 2 rifles with that style of stock.
did you giy the same ammo with the same grains cause the quality of ammo will make the difference sometimes am able to get a 20 rounds box of 7.62×54 mm for $5 buck's and the 308 for $30 buck's and and the last times at the range the mosing nagant got stuck one case in the chamber due the low quality of ammo on the mosing nagant and 308 we are able to get pretty good rounds and have no problems on jammed gun or low penetration that's the difference my friend who tee who by the way i love your semi 308 cmmg rifle i want one for my own
I think that the 7.62x54r have a little bit more potential if your action is strong enough because of his case capacity which is 4.16 cm³ vs 3.6 cm³ for the .308 winchester. Both are amazing cartridges.
308 has a higher velocity made for newer rifles. The 7.62x54r i had one before selling it to my brother was a m44 . 7.62x54r was the Russian 30,06. The 7.62x39 is their 3030 or 308 depending how u look at it.
.308 for me because i already have one. How do you think you would go putting water jugs around the sides of the blocks to catch the projectile if theres any left?👍🇳🇿🇺🇸👍
Heard some talk about 6.5 creed being better than the 308. I personally don’t think so. I love my 308, but how about doing that comparison 6.5 creed v 308
Your mosin shot wasnt a squared shot.. ALWAYS have extra blocks..you had extra rounds! PS the Mosin cost 10% of your CMMG.. Of course you want the CMMG to win
TulAmmo has a bimetal projectile with iron which is harder than the copper lead in Win white box. I'd say with the same projectile, 308 goes through that 3rd wall.
The cinder blocks are ok.. but they are not built equal and some are more brital then others.. Should do the same test but use 2x8" blocks of wood.. with multiple stacks..
Thanks for the video. You could try some plywood on the sides to try and keep the round where you may be able to find it. Just an idea. And I have a .308. I like that one.
I just knew the 7.62x54 was gonna punch all the way through and edge out the .308, now I'm wondering what FMJ 30-06 would do cuz 7.62x54 is close in case length
Yo Whotie!!!! It's not a fair comparison with the AR style 308, even though 308 is my favorite rifle caliber, but I guarantee a through an through shot with a bolt action 308 rifle..
308 vs mosin is apples to apples, this all comes down to projectiles used, it is totally possible to use the exact same projectiles in both rifles, only issue is sizing them down a couple thousandths to work in the 308 and then test. I bet results would even be more similar
The mosin is usually loaded hotter than 308. Especially the milsurp stuff with steel cores or s&b hunting rounds. U kind of had the absolute cheapest 7.62x54 made. Still a cool video. I think a really cool video idea would be to test the recoil of those 2 guns bc they are pretty close in power. I bet the cmmg is way softer shooting!!
I was wrong too. I thought they would both just barely break the 3rd wall, and I thought the Mosin would have slightly more power, although I was rooting for the .308.
A long single stacked mag may negate the rim lock issue in a semi operation. Preferably piston operation over impingement system with adjustable valves to contain all the expelling gas. There might be some custom builds out there, but from factory would be nice. Shouldn't be to hard either, technically a longer ar ten.
So close. Got the closest weight bulletS, but then you fire one from a bolt action and the other from a semi-auto. 54r with the longer barrel and all the gasses moving the projectile, where as the ar10 looses fps because of the gas system and shorter barrel. Try with 2 bolt actions next.
Love to see 7.62 x 51 vs 308. Before you say they are the same they are not. Super similar but the 308 is a little higher pressure. Might be enough to push thru the third wall!
Another great video on a beautiful day here in Middle Tennessee, Brother! Hope to get in and see you and Paul real soon. I have a couple popular pistols I hadn't seen on the channel I'd be more than willing to let y'all shoot if you're interested. We'll talk.
I don't believe cinder blocks have been made for a long time now, however cement blocks are quite common, and it seems yours are cement. Just saying. I do however enjoy your videos very much. Thanks for the time and effort spent doing them...
Tulammo is not a military round. These are cartridges for the civilian market. I don’t know how in the USA, but in Russia the cartridges for the army have a different amount (and maybe a type?) of gunpowder and another bullet. Cartridges for commercial use are usually weakened in comparison with military ones. In any case, with pistol cartridges this is the case. I see no reason why things would be different with rifle cartridges.
If you would have hit the center with the Mosin, it would have been a different story. You hit the block at an angle and likely the bullet just grazed or completely missed the back wall of the block
I like your cmmg endeavor ar10, urban gray looks great. Surprised it had an a2 compensator though but still looks good. My friend told me the Russian ammo has a steel core rod, l didn't check with magnet to confirm this but considering it's cheaper l find it doubtful. Those Winchester super x rounds are the bees knees, l small game hunt with those, they always get job done one shot squirrels to ground hogs no problems. I also use them in 30-30 and 308 at my gun club, they pack a punch. Not as cheap as Russian ammo but White box or Super X are good rounds but Ranger T is my favorite.
Hello bro, thanx for testing a russian caliber, there are many interesting ones from the ballistic point of view, as to compare them with european and american calibers, for example the. 50BMG vs the 12.7x108mm soviet, hopefully one Day a video on those two or the 14.5x114mm
Looks like cinder blocks to me. There IS a difference between a concrete block and a cinder block. Concrete blocks are heavier bc they’re much more dense. Tell your viewers to do a quick search before they jump on your case lol 👍🏻
I was just browsing yesterday and looking things up. Its super confusing that bullet diameters dont match their name. .308 is. 7.8mm bullet, 7.62x51 is a 7.82mm bullet, and 7.62x54r is. 7.92mm bullet. 7.62x54r and 8mm mauser use the same bullet
@@Gungeek well according to reloading sites .308 winchester and 7.62x51 use a. .308" diameter bullet, and the 7.62x54r uses a .312" bullet. That is why I made my comment
7×62/54 needs to be in the center too with the shot I think the brick was kinda side ways when you shot it, then the 308 brick shot was right on the face of the rifle .. I would say DRAW or a RE-DO
I call it a DRAW! Not all blocks are created equal. Without doing the test several times you can't come to a positive conclusion. A second, third or fouth test likely will have different results. Winner would be the one that did the most damage repeatedly.
I agree should shoot at least three blocks each with guns on a bench set so trajectory is the same on the target.
Cope
Looks like the 54 was shot at a bit more of an angle.A square shot would have tied up the results.Just my 2 cents though.
Yeah? Well your two cents are WRONG! JK, I have no idea, but either one would get the job done. Both awesome rifles and rounds to say the least.
i'd like to see it where the mosin is equally centered as well =)

I was wrong, all my experience with Tula is it is steel core. I have a M91-30 and a S&W M&P10.
Tula is not steel core...
Tha Mosin made me proud, That 308 is just downright Beautiful.
Yo Whotie!!!! It's not a fair comparison with the AR style 308, even though 308 is my favorite rifle caliber, but I guarantee a through an through shot with a bolt action 308 rifle..
No way
Love your videos. Wish I had subscribed many, many, many videos ago.
I have both rifles but my favorite is my DPMS SASS in .308.
I'd like to see cmmg make a AR platform in the 54r
💪💪
A long single stacked mag may negate the rim lock issue in a semi operation. Preferably piston operation over impingement system with adjustable valves to contain all the expelling gas.
There might be some custom builds out there, but from factory would be nice. Shouldn't be to hard either, technically a longer ar ten.
So close. Got the closest weight bulletS, but then you fire one from a bolt action and the other from a semi-auto. 54r with the longer barrel and all the gasses moving the projectile, where as the ar10 looses fps because of the gas system and shorter barrel. Try with 2 bolt actions next.
But the 308 still won...
Love to see 7.62 x 51 vs 308. Before you say they are the same they are not. Super similar but the 308 is a little higher pressure. Might be enough to push thru the third wall!
👍👍 good idea
And then you can use the same rifle and exact same weight projectile.
That's a good looking AR!
I love it! Thanks for watching David!
Damn beautiful rifle sir and also nice cinderblocks
💥💥💥💪💪
Wonder if cinder block is tougher than a wild hog skull for example
Another great video on a beautiful day here in Middle Tennessee, Brother! Hope to get in and see you and Paul real soon. I have a couple popular pistols I hadn't seen on the channel I'd be more than willing to let y'all shoot if you're interested. We'll talk.
Thanks for watching J Random!
I don't believe cinder blocks have been made for a long time now, however cement blocks are quite common, and it seems yours are cement. Just saying.
I do however enjoy your videos very much. Thanks for the time and effort spent doing them...
Thanks for watching Alan!!!
Awesome video! I was pulling for the .308 should have finished off the blocks!
I should have. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 thanks for watching Mark!
That Mosin is an awesome looking rifle!! I love that 308 also!!
Awesome guns and great video!
🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ just having fun, not a science lab 😁😁😁
@@WHOTEEWHO I understand this, no problem.👍
I hit wrong button A lot of Mosin surplus Spam can ammo is steel core, but not all.
Use the 180g fmj stell core for the mosen and it will turn the block to dust.
I agree!! Love that old rifle though!
I thought the Mosin would do more damage to the third wall....I am happy to be wrong on this one 😉 Great camera work as well bud.
I thought so too
I think it deserves a reshoot. Just because the mosin was a bit off angle.
It may not really make a difference, but let's see anyway.
Who tee who you are right them are cender blocks they do make Concrete blocks but they are a lot heavier.
Awesome video!
7×62/54 needs to be in the center too with the shot I think the brick was kinda side ways when you shot it, then the 308 brick shot was right on the face of the rifle .. I would say DRAW or a RE-DO
Hey Adam next time for effect stick a milk jug in center of the cinder block love the videos keep it up 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Dan White it will affect the penetration
@@reaganriddle1583 yeah but it will look good
I'll pick the 54R simply because you can shoot it with the iron sights and don't need a scope.
