  • Just before Valentines Day at Fort Benning, 3 inches of snow covered the ground, adding an unusual obstacle and bit of entertainment to the new troops training at sand hill. Although most people had the day off, our Ron Andruss joined the basic trainees.

They had snow this last cycle too. My son graduated on 2/11/11 and they had sleet, snow and even a little freezing rain. Being from Iowa, he was used to it but not expecting it. They had a good time with it like the guys on the video. Fort Benning is such an awesome place and the NIM is the most beautiful museum, I wish I could go back for 2 days just to see the museum.

No......I was in Ft. Wainwright, AK and if they were there, there would be the difference of about 2 feet on the ground and another 60 degrees colder or even more.

I was at Fort Benning in the summer of 1986 and 1987. They said that we were crazy being there in the summer. I don't know what I would think if I were there in the snow however.

The US Army was born on June 14th, 1775 and the US Marines were born on November 10th, 1775. So I guess you could say the Marines learned from the Army, but its not like we could back in time and ask them.

All of modern Infantry doctrine was written during WW2 on the battlefields of Europe. Most of it was written by the Paratroopers, and a good deal of it was invented on the spot. The class L shaped assault on an objective was born on the battlefields of Normandy. 7-8 and the Ranger Handbook have most of the information you are trying to source here. Both were born out of what was learned in WW2 and then Korea and Vietnam.

Ok, the only way you'd have basic there is if you enlisted 11X, if not then you'll wind up going to either Leonard Wood or Jackson that is if you didn't enlist for a 13 series MOS then you'll go to Ft. Sill Oklahoma. However most support MOS go to either one of the first two I listed.

Not the Fort Benning I remember either! What a difference 10 years make! I didn't know what Polypro was until long after Basic and AIT, and I graduated from basic just after Thanksgiving! Georgia mornings and nights are freezing cold, ice forms on your head after doing PT.
We weren't even allowed to wear our old coats, let a lone Gortex or Poly-Pros!
Glad to see the training has advanced, looks like they are learning more! At least they are learning Urban combat skills/CQB!

@ARMZofSORROW Marine boot camp doesn't put its trainees through 61 days of 20 hour-a-day training, maybe 3 hours of sleep, and 2 meals a day tops. On top of all of this, Ranger Candidates are expected to learn advanced infantry and combat leader skills, mountain and swamp warfare, advanced patrol tactics, air assault tactics, among a myriad of other skills.

When did you go, because it's there... if the range is not ready, you have to wait... or if something's missing, you can not leave the range until it is found! Also these are graduates, near the end and it's snowing!
I was in Georgia for work related training when this happened, the whole city shuts down and most of the state because they rarely ever get snow, especially 3" of snow!
In AIT after chow in AL we had a few girls from Alabama cry because it was 1st time seeing snow!

No one can deny that Marine Corps Bootcamp is a harder thing to go through than Army Basic training. You can ask any Soldier, and They all know and acknowledge that fact. But outside of Bootcamp or basic training, and it comes to War and battle. It is just as brutal and rough, no matter what branch you are.
