You are saying atoms, actually, it's the electrons. Also, according to Pauli's Exclusion principle, two or more electrons cannot occupy the same quantum state. Then how can u achieve population inversion in the same metastable state? Can You please explain it.

Life span of atom in excited state is 10^-8 seconds and in metastable state is 10^-3 that's more than excited state.
In all the lectures of population inversion they say atoms instead of electrons...what is the correct one can anybody tell me please?

I would like to correct you that its not the atoms that move on supplying energy, it's the electrons which move. Atoms are immobile.
