One of the few special occasions for a farm boy in a very remote area was to drive to the city and hear the Statesmen and Blackwoods sing. There was so much talent, and Rozie Rozell was among my favorites.
I know what you mean. My older sister used to take me and my mother to occasional Saturday night Gospel Sings in the nearby "big city." Thanks be to God that I heard this instead of godless music.
I was at a singing at age l7 in B'ham and when Rosie sung "Oh What a Savior." I thought about how much Jesus loved me and how great a Savior he was and I surrendered to the ministry at that singing, That was 56 years ago, and not a day goes by that I don't once again rejoice in the fact that "He gave His life blood, for even me."
Amen Donald!! I always contend that there are many people that God uses scripture-based gospel singing to speak to them like preaching may never do. Many people have been saved by hearing God speak to them thru His Word in gospel singing.
Reminiscing, I tracked this music down as it was my Dad's favorite. I was very young when this music played in our home but happy to see that I recognized it once I played it again. Added it to my Amazon playlist. Some friends have no idea what it is but they listen intently like it's something completely foreign and new. I am enjoying rediscovering it 48 years later in my life and feeling closer to my Dad and my God.
I love these men. I knew Rosie and Hovie personally thanks to my dad's heavy involvement with Southern Gospel. This was my favorite to hear Rosie sing and my dad too. They don't make it like this anymore.
Rosie was the best Southern Gospel Tenor I ever heard and the song O What a Savior was made for Rosie, It is one of the top songs in Southern Gospel of all times !!!!!
Anyone who sings this song should always pay tribute to Rosie, he created the arrangement and made the song what it became. Greatest tenor ever in gospel music IMHO! We miss you Rosie!
Rosie, brought the Blues to Gospel music , with perfect breathing control and a great Tenor God given voice. No one will ever sing this song quite like Rosie.
The last time I heard Rosie, back in about 1984, he could still raise the roof with this signature number. We are indeed blessed to have had this talent pass this way. Look for "Hide Thou Me," as another great Rosie number. This is one of the songs that made the Statesmen truly great.
If that powerful, beautifully written, spirit anoited song don't stir up your soul, I don't know what will! Rosie's signature song won many souls for his Savior! Oh what a Savior Rosie served and we serve..his sacrifice was depicted and portrayed so vividly in this great timeless old Spiritual!!
Rosie's expressions and delivery seem so positive and kinda make me look forward to my day.. I've listened to these guys since I was a young kid. Their just great!
I was fortunate enough to hear Rosie sing this in person. I heard him sing it when he was with the Searchers back in the 70's. I tell you I've never seen someone get more excited while singing a song. You could tell it was more than just a song or performance to him.
I heard Rosie sing this song in person many times in Chicago and in Nashville. I have to say there is no other song that moves me to tears but this one with Rosie singing it.
Rozie is the best at this song!! I cry everytime I hear it, especially the last time he sang with Dean Brown. Thank you for posting. I added you to my subscription list. God bless always.
WhileI would say that Ernie Haase is no Rosie it is still blessing that this young man has taken this song and madeit his own. Now it is still being sung in the 21st century. RIP Rosie and all the old statemen
Always have and Always will be my FAVORITE QUARTET. As a young teenager, during th 50's, listening to Elvis, The Platters, The Big Bopper, Chubby Checker, I bought a Few Records, 45's. BUT, My Favorite Music of All was Quartet Music, Gospel. I have More 33 rpms of My Favorite Singers and others that are Gospel, still have them. But, the Original Statements were and still are my Favorite.
very very nice :) I sing tenor in a gospel quartet, and we do this song. I don't mean to try to put myself on any pedestal or anything, but I think I do it pretty well. This song will, however, ALWAYS belong to Rosie Rozell :) LOVE his version, he's the best. Thanks for the post!
Yes, I really like this song, too. I may not sing it as well as Rosie Rozelle, but the Lord blesses me when I sing it. Just read and think about the words sometime! Glory to God!
Oh ny! Yes, I saw it the last time Rozie sang this w/Dean. Talk about chills, the look on Dean's face when Rozie did his familiar "on Calvary" at the end. Made me cry! R.I.P. Rozie. Keep singing up in Heaven to Him.
i`ll soon be passing...he died shortly after this praise service. i`l join him in heaven soon to worship God who dying on the cruel cross for all my sin his hands were nail scarred
i always thought i was different when in high school i sang 2 soprano till i heard rosie sing in the old akron armory to bad my voice changed greatest singer ever
I believe Lady Marine is correct, His side was "riven." and here all these years I have been singing it "His "sight" was driven.....lol Thanks for the correction Lady Marine, have a blessed day!
This Song stood the test of time till Jesus returns. The christian writer who wrote the Song & the musician who created the tune and the melody is so wonderful to listen. I don’t compare the number of singers who’ve sung this Song, but I have two favourite of mine - Rosie Rozel & Larry Ford. Rosie has a unique sound of his voice and its natural Larry is a hard working man in terms of practicing his voice. These two gentlemen are God given talent that blessed the hearts of many around the world.
The recording I like best with Rosie singing "O What A Savior" is the 1982 album called "O What A Savior." He recorded it with The Masters Five. You can find it in iTunes, type in "Southern Gospel Heritage Series and you'll see "O What A Savior," I highly recommend it. Rosie's style & how he sang it with such feeling has won me over! What a fantastic song that describes our Lord and what he went through for us.
WHAT A SAVIOR (1946) Words & Music: Marvin Dalton Key: Bb 4/4 1. Once I was straying in sin's dark valley, No hope within could I see; They searched thru' Heaven and found a Savior, To save a poor, lost soul like me. Chorus;Oh, what a Savior! Oh, Hallelujah! His heart was broken on Calvary; His hands were nail-scarred, His side was riven, He gave his life-blood for even me. 2. He left the Father, with all His riches, with calmness sweet and serene;Came down from Heaven and gave His lifeblood, To make the vilest sinner clean. 3. Death's chilly waters I'll soon be crossing, His hand will lead me safe o'er.I'll join the Chorus in that great City, And sing up there forever more!

Ernie is my personal favorite as far as this song but, Rosie IS the original & hard to beat. Just think folks Rosie is probably singing this right TO that Savior :)
Oh, that the oceans were tears and my eyes were their fountains though they never cease to flow, naught of time or eternity could tell the least of my love for Him, my precious savior. Indeed; O What a Savior...! BTW, who is Rozie?
I'm looking for a song Rosie did that started out with this line: In that great triumphant morning, when we hear that bright Bridegroom cry, (then he did a small sweet chuckle and continued the song. I cannot find the title of the song, nor can I remember the other words to it. I loved the song and would love to hear it again!! HELP PLEASE!!!!
The hymn your looking for is actually called "In that Great Triumphant Morning" but as hard as I've looked, I can't find a rendition done by Rosie. In the great triumphant morning, When we hear the Bridegroom cry, And the dead in Christ shall rise, We’ll be changed to life immortal, In the twinkling of an eye, And meet Jesus in the skies. Refrain We shall all rise to meet Him, We shall all rise to greet Him, In the morning when the dead in Christ shall rise We shall all rise to meet Him, We shall all rise to greet Him, And shall have the marriage supper in the skies. In the great triumphant morning, What a happy time ’twill be, When the dead in Christ shall rise, When the Lord descends in glory, Sets His waiting children free, And we meet Him in the skies. Refrain In the great triumphant morning, When the harvest is complete, And the dead in Christ shall rise, We’ll be crowned with life immortal, Christ and all the loved ones meet, In the rapture in the skies. Refrain In the great triumphant morning, All the kingdom we’ll possess, Then the dead in Christ shall rise, Reign as kings and priests eternal, Under Christ forever blest, After meeting in the skies.
O WHAT A SAVIOR (Marvin P. Dalton) ***Chorus O what a Savior, O hallelujah His heart was broken on Calvary His hands were nail scarred His side was riven He gave His life-blood for even me. Death’s chilly water I’ll soon be crossing His hand will lead me safe o're I’ll join the chorus in that great city And sing up there for evermore. ***Chorus
Oh what a savior! He gave His life's blood for all then arose to live that I might live forever to be with Him. Believe in Jesus that you may be saved, also!
@ldoyle1043 I thought the same thing but come to find out it's driven not riven......as in driven with a spear. If you watch the video again you'll see! God Bless!
No one can sing this like Rosie!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And anyone else who thinks it’s “their” song is just full of themselves!!
Nobody ccould ever hope to sing this song like Rosie did!!!!!!!
ROSIE WAS THE BEST FIRST TENOR IN GOSPEL QUARTET MUSIC!!!!ABSOLUTE!!!!
This will always be Rosie's song...Nobody will ever do it better...
I so agree! I grew up on this music and there is no one who sings this any better.
Rosie is truly one of the best tenors ever.
One of the few special occasions for a farm boy in a very remote area was to drive to the city and hear the Statesmen and Blackwoods sing. There was so much talent, and Rozie Rozell was among my favorites.

Rosie really puts his heart into it
Exactly!! No one can come close to Rosie!!!

Rosie was a legend. The Statesmen Quartet always have been at the top of the best quartet as long I can remember
We need a gospel group like the statesmen now
Rosie, brought the Blues to Gospel music , with perfect breathing control and a great Tenor God given voice. No one will ever sing this song quite like Rosie.
I love this song, and to hear Rosie sing it along with Big Chief just makes it that much better.
The last time I heard Rosie, back in about 1984, he could still raise the roof with this signature number. We are indeed blessed to have had this talent pass this way. Look for "Hide Thou Me," as another great Rosie number. This is one of the songs that made the Statesmen truly great.

Oh what a Savior..and Oh what a Singer! Rosie was one of the best tenors next to Johnny Cook
Johnny Cook also did an incredible job with this song.
I was fortunate enough to hear Rosie sing this in person. I heard him sing it when he was with the Searchers back in the 70's. I tell you I've never seen someone get more excited while singing a song. You could tell it was more than just a song or performance to him.

As a youngster in the late 50’s very early 60’s seeing the God’s of southern 4 part harmony gospel remains alive today
It is no wonder Elvis Presley loved listening to the gospel quartets .. The statesmen are a prime example why.
Rozie is the best at this song!! I cry everytime I hear it, especially the last time he sang with Dean Brown. Thank you for posting. I added you to my subscription list. God bless always.
Such a beautiful voice he had. Loved listening to Rosie and the statesmen.
Pure gold.

Often imitated...never duplicated
❤❤❤❤❤
Isaiah 6:5, wow is me, for I have realized my unrighteousness and then I met the Saviour!

that perfect key of F :)
Riven, as in stabbed by a spear.. check the dictionary.
LISTEN to the tenor of the Masters 4 of the 70's-80's. Harmon McKenzie is the tenor. He is good.
What can you say.
@kjones309 .........Seriously? You're "parshall?"
@ldoyle1043 I thought the same thing but come to find out it's driven not riven......as in driven with a spear. If you watch the video again you'll see! God Bless!
