Guess the guitarist challenge. Write a series of famous guitarists names on cards. Lee and Rob take turns picking a card and trying to play like that guitarist and the other has to try to guess who he is trying to play like.
Cap, I'm with you. I had a leak in my Custom Shop Reissue 58 like you have. When I turn my volume knob of the neck pickup, the sound of the bridge pickup changes. I made blind test tons of times. I guessed 9 from 10 every time. People said to me you are crazy but it's imposibble that I guess everytime. So I discovered then that in vintage wiring there are some leaks. So my ear is just well trained because I'm a pro audio engineer. I see you hear guitars. Don't let them convince you that there is no difference.
Ive actually brought al my old gear to my old mechanic to get it in shape to be sold.and got yelled at badly on how dirty and beer drenched and nicotine coated everything was.wel it was used a bunch of time a week and travelled a lot so thats kindof inevitable right
Hello guys, I am a blind man in Denver Colorado, in the middle of the US who watches your videos all the time. I just started learning a year and a half ago and love your videos because you both are excellent players, you do a great job explaining the gear, what it looks like, how it works and your thoughts about it in general and this is all helpful for people who can not see the video itself. I was sighted until almost my 21 birthday and now am 47 and just came to the realization that life is going by very fast and the best time to learn is now, right now and am doing so. Being blind is hard for you guys because you are sighted so this is your blind experience here, waking up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and stepping on the cat, tripping over the boots. Being blind is not difficult when you do it 24/7 as I hav in a big American city for 26 years now. One of the tests to graduate the from the training center I have worked at for the last 18 years is a Drop where the student is dropped off by a sighted employee and they have no idea where they are and they must find their way back to our center and only allowed to ask one question of anyone about anything. I passed the test myself in 1994 and have seen hundreds since I started working at the center. It is a full time, 9 month program so people learn all they need to be independent the rest of their lives. The things I miss now is the emotional things, looking at women, looking at the stars or the beautiful mountains just a mile to the west of my home and of course miss driving. I started off with a cheap Ymaha 012 Pacifico starter pack and have since purchased an Ibanez RGA42 and a Black Star Silver Line 50W that I learned about here with you guys. Thanks for the good work educating all of us and entertaining us as well. Ii will never be as good as either of you have learned a lot and love playing and will be getting better every year I do play. Love my Ibanez but looking to get a triple single pick up guitar and looking at the Tele, the Strat and learning about the Epi now, not interested in Gibson because of the extra weight.
Les Kinney I have an iPhone and iPhones come equipped with a software called voice over which allows the phone to speak and read what is on the screen. All phones have it, just has to be turned on. I can do anything on my phone, navigate the Internet, emails, text messages. Technology has made life better for the blind too. I navigate TH-cam this way and find their videos and then I just listen to them talk about the equipment
What the fuck, Rob is a wizard. He guessed both the color and the model of the first two guitars. "He doesn't sound comfortable playing it" for the 335 :o Jesus!
Idea for a challenge. 'Cheap modded guitar' Vs 'off the shelf'. Take a £500 guitar, spend £500 on upgrades, and compare to a £1000 off the shelf guitar?
Obviously the cheap with the mods will sound better, provided that they both play on the same gear. From what I've seen, the sound quality change is very slight when ascending from a 500 to 1000-ish range
They have. Surprises me that people don't look through the back catalogue of videos before making a request, there are absolutely loads of great challenges they've already done. I came into the videos relatively late on and spent many an hour enjoying the older stuff.
I agree with you. It's been a long time since Rob and Lee doing review of ESP. I would like to see blindfolded test of LTD vs E-II vs ESP original/ESP USA.
I rarely watch 40+ min videos, but this one was absolutely worth it. Not only interesting but also makes me pick up my guitar more than anything for some reason. Loved it!

DREAM GIG CHALLENGE! Rob and Lee starting a band together and have to build all their equipment. Assemble a custom guitar, a custom amp. The challenge of who rocks harder with a smaller budget.
I have to say... its really nice to come back to an older video like this when none of these scandals or whatever they are were going on... seeing these mates having a laugh and a great time...
You should do these blindfold tests, but switch some of the pickups in order to find out how much of the tone comes from the guitar itself. For example a squier with genuine fender pickups vs a whole fender guitar.
I hazard to guess 'not a lot' TBH. It makes sense it would be more about feel and playability with the more expensive guitars rather than sound, especially if they had the same pickups, strings and setup.
SW1976 You might be right. I played a dirt cheap Squier with Fender TexMex pickups for quite some time before switching to an american strat and it really wasnt that bad. Keeping in mind that the Squier with Fender PUs was still 5 times cheaper than the most affordable american strat, it is a pretty good option if you really are on a budget.
MetalWonderWombat My sons got a Squier CV telecaster and TBH even with the stock pickups the differences between it and the more expensive Mexican and USA models we've demoed is negligible and very hard to justify extra cost. The biggest jump in guitars over the past 5-10 years has definitely been In the quality of < £500 instruments IMHO.
+MetalWonderWombat same goes for epi/gib, take my words with a grain of salt cause I'm no expert and I don't have a lot of experience but what really blew my mind when I switched from an epi les paul to a gibson more than the sound itself was how smooth and easy to play felt in comparison I literally felt like a better guitarist (which probably wasn't true ofc but that's the feeling) just cause I thought I was more agile and fast on the fretboard
The second he strummed that first chord on the Epi SG, I was just thinking "The plot thickens...." lol. That's a damn fine sounding instrument, especially considering what it is. It had some of that PRS-esque controlled jangle that I love. Most guitars these days just sound like a messy jumble of disorganized frequencies. When you hear a guitar that gels like that SG, you know you've found a good one. Unfortunately, with the preponderance of online guitar sales these days, the chance that you may get a good one or you may get a lemon will become all the more prevalent. Personally, I've never bought a guitar that I couldn't play first, and until all the physical guitar stores go away * knock on wood * , I never will. I've always found that the nicest playing, best sounding electrics in a guitar store are rarely the most expensive ones. For instance, my current favorite guitar is a $750CAD Jackson SLATT soloist that was made in Indonesia. I A/B'ed it with a USA made Jackson Dinky just for shits and giggles, and imagine my surprise when I discovered that the SLATT sounded and played way better than the other one which was going for 3x the price. As soon as I discovered that, I decided that I would not leave the store without that guitar. Say what you will about Indonesia, but their factories make some damn fine instruments. Indonesian made Ibanez guitars are also quite good.
the fishman will stand out completely they blow away the active pickup competition. especially with the ability to switch between active and passive sound
I love Rob's nickname for Rabea..."Fro Bro" is just awesome! :D Only problem is, when he can identify a guitar just by the way it SMELLS...kinda makes these challenges a bit pointless!
Gosh that SG is perfection. I'd kill for a deep burgundy red wood finish, some 11 gauge strings ugh I miss playing. Sold my guitar for heroin a few years back. Since then I've gotten my shit together, got clean and sober, but I miss the hell out of playing the guitar.
I feel you bro, one of my sm57s, and my pearl snare drum is the pawn shop right now, not to mention how many of my synthesizers and guitars have been sold for H
Just goes to show that Epiphone makes damn great guitars for the price. They're clearly entirely in the same class as Gibson's in terms of build quality but they're still great guitars.
Well, it's pretty much the same for every brand, high end guitar will be a good instrument, low end guitar will be crap, including Gibson and Epiphone.
I would agree with ya, Boss Ross. I bought an Epi Les Paul Standard Plus Top about two years back for a fraction of what a Gibson costs. I have been thrilled with its performance so far. I think i paid between 600 and 700 USD for it and have never once regretted it.
The tone and sustain is no where near as nice. Is that tone worth the extra cash is debatable but I was not even watching the video, it was just playing in the background and I could tell which was the Gibson and which was the Epi and I have never owned either brand. If I did not hear them back to back I might not be able to tell, but one after another its obvious. This is an ad, there is no way a guy with that many years with all different types cannot tell the difference between a US pickup and a... "what ever pickup the epiphone uses" pick up. I was a total noob when I bought my first fender and I could feel the difference instantly between the mexican ones and the US ones. The frets were smoother and better made, the finish was smoother, and it was just easier to play... The overall feel of the cheap one was sharper and obviously machine made. The sound was even easier to pick out. The Mexican strat sounded like a ghost hand was palm muting every note I played. The US one sounded like it was running through an amp that was twice as loud and clear.
The Cheapest Rig Challenge Metal VS Blues. Budget £250 price does not included leads, picks or power supplies for effects pedals. Guitar - Up to £100 Amp - Up to £100 Effects pedals combined- up to £50
Watching in the fall of 2020. This challenge shows basically two things: 1. Cheap affordable guitars are made much better nowdays. 2. A good setup makes a ton of a difference. I hope someone from Anderton's reads this comment and I will get a t-shirt.
Anderton's US? maybe the first transatlantic store?! What say you Gentlemen?! Google Maps will show you that Anderton's is in Brighton - which is on the South coast of England, about an hour or so from london by car. So, in which city should anderton's US store number 1 be?
They were both cheating with ES-335, they kept touching the hand guard because Epiphone has their symbol on it and you can clearly feel that E on touch.
Love you guys to no end, but you have to know you can feel the Epiphone logo on the pick guard for the 335! lol Not to mention Rob felt it like 5 times.
Rob's ear continues to amaze me. The fact that he can tell what pickups are in a guitar from SOMEONE ELSE PLAYING and just be like "probably duncans" is unreal.
This was a great video! What i liked best is i can literally hear the difference in attack between rob n lee...goes to show just how different the hands of the player will affect the overall sound too
I know so little that I can't tell the difference on any of these challenges... but I love watching you guys prove that you can (usually). As a total beginner, though, I have to say that these videos also provide a great public service in letting me know that I can get into this hobby (for me) without feeling like my budget equipment is going to keep me from enjoying myself. And that if I get good enough to want to upgrade... there IS a payoff once you can hear it. Thanks.
I remeber watching this video when I started playing in 2017. I still am sh*t at guitar, but this stil gives me motivation to this day. So happy that I can watch it again. Thank you Rob!
You guys should do a blindfold test with some beginners or people that have only owned a maximum of 5 guitars in their life to see how well less experienced people notice the differences!
+Noisey Stooges "I believe this is an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro in Alpine White played through a Marshall DSL40C Combo with a Tonecity Golden Plexi, a Dallas Arbiter FuzzFace and a Boss Jazz Chorus in the front of the amp. I hungry now."
Why would anyone want to know if a beginner or someone inexperienced with guitar can tell the difference? That’s the point of these videos. To help inexperienced people.
Maybe you could do some high end boutique pedals vs their cheaper (maybe tone city or something) counterparts. I'd also like to see some Squier's loaded up with high end pickups and you could either challenge them against the stock models or against higher end guitars, something like a standard squier with duncan ssl-1 pickups vs. and american standard with their stock pickups.
Lads.... what a great video!!! fantastic!!!! You guys are slowly replacing my TV at prime time hours.... Anyway.. ideas?? can we have an acoustic blindfold challenge? or is that too obvious? get some Martin's or Taylor's against some cheaper acoustic guitars out there... also... 12 string blindfold challenge? either acoustic or electric would be nice! again... compare a rickenbacker with a cheaper version.... you know what?? a blindfold BASS guitar challenge would be good, there's a lot of people out there who would love that. Even a PRS shootout... the USA ones against the cheaper ones... alternatively.... there are brands out there that are making decent quality stratocaster... telecaster... even Les Paul type guitars.... ( Greg bennett for example ) I'd like to see one of those brands against an epiphone and a Gibson or a fender. Cheers guys love your stuff
Over priced is a generality. You can buy a new 2016 faded SG for under $800.00 or a new 2016 SG Standard for under $1200.00 that doesn't sound expensive to me. I also agree there are some amazing Squiers, my J Mascis is proof of that!
Are you talking about guitars with Fender on the headstock? I think Epiphone vs Gibson is closer to MIM Fender vs MIA Fender. MIM and CV guitars are both import guitars. The prices also don't add up either. A faded SG costs less than an American Special. But a LP Standard costs much more than an American Vintage or Elite while a SG Standard is less than an American Standard.
And feeling the volume pointers ,truss rod screws, bridge pins, he just cheats, and pretends he can't find the volume knobs blindfolded, any player can find the controls without visual assistance, they should only touch the neck and strings, the tone isn't what their concentrating on.
@Stephen Bowyer what do you mean “what a hoax?” They’re humans, they couldn’t even find the damn pickup selector with their blindfolds on 🤣🤣🤣 chill dude...
As a reeds and keys player I know FA about guitars but this was one of the most interesting videos I've seen in ages. Fascinating to discover how subtle the differences are between various guitars and how you guys pick up on that. Excellent stuff :)
Aw, man, they shouldn't have had the guys play them and handle them in the Gib vs. Epi challenge, they should have had to listen to Bea play them like they did in the SG vs. LP vs. 335 challenge. Darn.
love all these vids. only found em yesterday and binge watched. very basic player and only play for myself really but definitely saving for a gibson lp so hopefully meet ye in the future
Gibson’s have Brazilian rosewood fretboards milled (not glued) mahogany bodies and 1/2 inch maple caps epiphones bodies are glued in sections and have maple veneers and have something called pau ferry wood on the fretboards
The biggest difference with the SGs is actually how the neck feels, I love my cherry red Epiphone but the lacquer does feel different when they're brand spanking new... Once you wear it in, you don't regret saving the 600 or so bucks... Switches and pots are good, sounds lovely through my old Marshall SL100 or my little 15W Marshall practice amp.
@@paintballTV1 Only Gibson's latest custom shop Les Pauls use Brazilian Rosewood and they are a special run. Brazilian rosewood is very scarce now. Most are using rosewood from other sources. Epiphone switched to Pau Ferro only recently. Fender and others also use it. You can still get rosewood or even ebony on some Epiphone models.
I think they bounced ideas off of each other, next time silent answers, like left hand for Gibson, right hand epiphone....after you've given the guitar back of course! Great video though
Guess the guitarist challenge. Write a series of famous guitarists names on cards. Lee and Rob take turns picking a card and trying to play like that guitarist and the other has to try to guess who he is trying to play like.
I like that one! Obviously not allowed to play any of that particular artists songs so it could be difficult but really great idea!
great idea! I would watch the s*it out of that video. :-D
+
the only thing is lee can't really shred so they might be limited but with Rabea it would be great
+matthew redmond Well no need to play their songs. Maybe just try to play in their style.
"Well either you look like Angus Young with your fine SG or I look like a Twat"
Brilliant.
Dude the captain nailed that one instantly but his comment was the funniest I've heard.....ever!
and he didn't censor it!
that's very surprising and weird because Chappers and Lee are censoring swears with breaking glass noises or chicken screams
twat is not a swear word , boy
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
As soon as he asked to hear AC/DC I was like "busted"!
7 guitars from different manufacturers, rob has to guess the makers by smell alone, no touching and lee gets to touch the lacquer.
im cryin :DDD
That'll be too easy
Hahaha brilliant.
Rory deserves a raise for this one. Edits on point
Haha thanks Matt! :D
agreed! LOL'd a'Plenty!
I need a gif of Rob dancing in his seat.
+Adam Winkelmann YES
I actually gave him s raise just a few weeks ago :-)
Need to hand them the same guitar and see if they think its a different guitar....
Yeah, that would be hilarious. "Same guitar challenge". It would be a good April fools joke.
Don't!! Its bad enough trying to guess when the 2 guitars are actually different - if you passed us the same guitar, my brain would probably implode!
I blindfolded myself to listen to this video and when the captain plays a Gibson, I thought it was Chappers playing an Epiphone !
It doesn't prove anything. In 14 century people thought that the Earth was flat.
Cap, I'm with you. I had a leak in my Custom Shop Reissue 58 like you have. When I turn my volume knob of the neck pickup, the sound of the bridge pickup changes. I made blind test tons of times. They only smell like that when they're new. Mine smell like beer and bad decisions.

A+ comment
Quality!
Next blindfold test must require nose plugs as well.
Or they can just spray some perfume in the room.

I'll start. *clap*

+Rory McLean Rory! Where are you and your videos?
Hey Teun, Back soon I promise! :D I've got some new riffs and vid idea's and can't wait to get back on it! Stay tuned! ;D
+Rory McLean Cool, looking forward to it and take your time and don't feel stressed ;)
got it, thanx!
no more smelling the guitars Rob you bloody Gib sniffer .
what a pervert , festering in his studio sniffing his range of gibs
yeah no one likes those
+William Stanway hasn't it been about 10 seconds since we've looked at our lemon tree
Next time Rabea should spray the guitars with car deodorant to mask the case smell.
I had to lock the door and put in my headphones to watch this filth. #ashamed
What the fuck, Rob is a wizard. He guessed both the color and the model of the first two guitars. "He doesn't sound comfortable playing it" for the 335 :o Jesus!

Neil Anderson they already did thay

The “E” logo on the pick guard kinda gave it away as they brushed it while looking for the knobs
Yeah, they definitely should've taken them off, the rods that keep the pickguard floating are completely different as well
The editing in this video is genius. Send my props to the bay
Thanks man! :D
yes. very "Fight Club" style editing at times.
Totally agree!
My god this editing. I`m concentrating on the comments of caption then suddenly a wild "hihi" appears, I can`t handle the hilariousness hahaha
46 mins of epicness. win.
And awesome editing :D
Agree. I'm not so epic but check my videos on guitars. I'm pro recording/mixing engineer. It can be useful for guys who are seriuos about recording.
32:09 "I prefer this"
-Rob Chapman playing an Epiphone 335
Says it once more at 33:00:
"Yeah, I prefer this one....... so I guess this is the more expensive Gibson?"
Chappers playing the mighty Epiphone Dot
LTD vs ESP next?... that will be the toughest yet... but they'll have to choose the models carefully .. or maybe not!
They don't have esp's in store. You have to be a certified dealer because they are all handmade
yes
I think they did that already... got a load of Eclipses and Rob had to guess the prices on them.
They have. Surprises me that people don't look through the back catalogue of videos before making a request, there are absolutely loads of great challenges they've already done. I came into the videos relatively late on and spent many an hour enjoying the older stuff.
They're never going to do a comparison of models they don't sell obviously. It is a business after all.
make a pick comparison
expensive 30 cent vs cheap 20 cent
Or expensive 10 dollar (stupid dragon hearts)
pick the pick, which one bought, which one stolen.
they actually just made one.....lol
Shawn is one of the lesser known guitar gods.

These blindfold challenges are the cornerstone of my gear choices now. They are so damn fun and fair.
esp vs ltd
I have a hunch that would be MUCH tougher than Gibson vs Epi
Exactley
I agree with you. It's been a long time since Rob and Lee doing review of ESP. I would like to see blindfolded test of LTD vs E-II vs ESP original/ESP USA.
This is long overdue and probably the most difficult to tell apart.
YES, THIS HAS TO HAPPEN!
Whoever edits these videos deserves a raise
Cast Rob as Sherlock Holmes, the Captain as Watson and Rabea as Moriarity.
They play Better blindfolded than I do regular.
Truth
I love the editing.. all the subtle silliness is hilarious!
Thanks Bryan! :D
I rarely watch 40+ min videos, but this one was absolutely worth it. Not only interesting but also makes me pick up my guitar more than anything for some reason. Loved it!

H3R3T1C where it’s made really doesn’t matter it’s all snobby Gibson owners who think America = good. There’s my two cents. Nice pick btw
Whoever edited this is amazing! Loved all those little bits in between. Really cracked me up!
Haha Thanks Mark, I was cracking up editing this yesterday! Glad you liked it! :D
He heeeeee
Active pickup battle, emg's against Seymour Duncan Blackouts blindfolded
Fishman too, I've heard a lot of good stuff about them
Even better if you have those 10 pound Entwistle pickups cos they sound great
the fishman will stand out completely they blow away the active pickup competition. especially with the ability to switch between active and passive sound
MAJOR respect for going out on a limb like that. Really cool. Also love the little funny edits between clips.
These videos are more entertaining than 90% of what is on TV. Rock on!
Whoever edited this video is a genius!
Thanks man, glad you liked it! :D
Rory I love your editing and videos

I love Rob's nickname for Rabea..."Fro Bro" is just awesome! :D

these edits make the videos so funny, and I love when Bea gets featured in them because he's so good and funny :') bring him in more often
Hey Daniel, Rory here, I edit these vids... just wanted to say thanks for your kind words, glad you enjoyed it! :D
+Rory McLean no worries :) keep up the brilliant work!
surprised chappers didn't accidentally feel the E on the dot's pickguard
No way he didn't, just decided to make it interesting.
Thought exactly the same thing. I reckon the Capt would have spotted it immediately.
I was just thinking the same. I forgot the E on the pickguard and when I spotted it I was just stressed about it.
Same. He ran his hand over it several times searching for the knobs.
+João Rafael Tend to agree, but reluctantly cos I love my 2015 Epi 335 pro :-)
Gosh that SG is perfection. I'd kill for a deep burgundy red wood finish, some 11 gauge strings ugh I miss playing. Sold my guitar for heroin a few years back. Since then I've gotten my shit together, got clean and sober, but I miss the hell out of playing the guitar.
Matt Pattison well done mate!
The only thing better would be to never be stupid enough to start taking drugs
Why if i never was a junky, id never have the life i do now..
Rickey Ryan It would be better
I feel you bro, one of my sm57s, and my pearl snare drum is the pawn shop right now, not to mention how many of my synthesizers and guitars have been sold for H
Who does the editing? It's hilarious 😂😂
I believe Rob does
+The Illuminati nah I think it's Rory
For real! Somebody here has updated his skills :D
That would be Rory McLean. He's awesome!
+The Illuminati nope it's my right hand man Rory
The biggest difference is fret job intonation setup and action on a gibson, also sound
They don't sound as good thought. I'm buying my first guitar and it's a used Les Paul.
Probably my favorite blindfold challenge to date!! Thank you for smelling la difference!!
Make rob guess between Gibson and Epiphone based only off smell
and guess the color
That's easy as shit, if you ever owned a Gibson, you will know that smell immediately.
Can smell the nitro lacquer from a mile away
+NXN Music It's buffing compound, not the lacquer itself.
Yeah I have a martin and a taylor acoustic and they both have really distinctive smells from the cases. You'd never mistake them for anything else.
You know you early when even Hank Hill hasn't turned up yet
Wtf are these edits xD
I know, they're hilarious lol
I love their editing 😂😂
Hilarious
They have to be dying while they're editing it lol
DougShablowski they don’t edit it... they have a guy named Rory that does it all for them
The Cheapest Rig Challenge Metal VS Blues. Budget £250 price does not included leads, picks or power supplies for effects pedals.
Guitar - Up to £100
Amp - Up to £100
Effects pedals combined- up to £50
The only guitars they could get are a mini strat or a mini lp
This would be a really good one to do, mostly because beginners have a similar budget to that, atleast, I do.
+Mitch Raith they could use the cheap jacksons or ibanez not just those squires
colin bardswell Check the Anderton's website. Even a squier mini strat is 110. Any Ibanez they stock isn't under 100.
+Mitch Raith Might be interesting to still do this, though. Maybe not have a set budget, but try and get it as cheap as possible.
Dude! he was all up on that pickguard feeling the E
Rob guessed it wrong and Chaps already made his decision beforehand, idk how this would matter at all
Watching in the fall of 2020. This challenge shows basically two things: 1. Cheap affordable guitars are made much better nowdays. 2. A good setup makes a ton of a difference. I hope someone from Anderton's reads this comment and I will get a t-shirt.
How long of a drive is it to Andertons from new york city?
About 7 hours if you drive an aeroplane
is this a serious question
Do you have a submersible car?
+Adam Winkelmann LOL
Anderton's US? maybe the first transatlantic store?! What say you Gentlemen?! Google Maps will show you that Anderton's is in Brighton - which is on the South coast of England, about an hour or so from london by car. So, in which city should anderton's US store number 1 be?
They were both cheating with ES-335, they kept touching the hand guard because Epiphone has their symbol on it and you can clearly feel that E on touch.
And the shape is different. Shenanigans!
Also the bar that holds the scratch plate off the body is different on that model. Flat vs round.
plus rob was pulling the pots on the epi lp looking for taps
Yeah Rob touched the logo.... and guessed a Eppi as Gibson........ "Real cheating".....
Hand guard? Sorry, no offense but that cracked me up. I use the hand wheel when driving my car, you?
I have watched this video 5 times since it has been out and cannot get enough lol I love it!
The editing is superb on this one go Rory
Thanks Harry! :D
+Rory McLean thanks for responding man your editing is hilarious
Cheers, and no problem amigo! :D
+Rory McLean no problem dude
Love you guys to no end, but you have to know you can feel the Epiphone logo on the pick guard for the 335! lol Not to mention Rob felt it like 5 times.
that's what I thought too, the pickguard from the Epiphone Dot and the Gibson 335 are completely different. I don't think they both got that though.
Casimir PB Yet Rob still guessed Gibson 😂
The epiphone les paul had coil tapping volume pots and rob pulled up on them when he was ‘looking’ for the switch
35:40
Rob always cheats.
Rob's ear continues to amaze me. The fact that he can tell what pickups are in a guitar from SOMEONE ELSE PLAYING and just be like "probably duncans" is unreal.
This was a great video! What i liked best is i can literally hear the difference in attack between rob n lee...goes to show just how different the hands of the player will affect the overall sound too
The Epiphone's had a muddier/bassier neck pickup.
And less certain attack on each pickup
Andrew Zeleno it was NASALLY to me, like the tone was constricted, maybe too much compression?
I know so little that I can't tell the difference on any of these challenges... but I love watching you guys prove that you can (usually). As a total beginner, though, I have to say that these videos also provide a great public service in letting me know that I can get into this hobby (for me) without feeling like my budget equipment is going to keep me from enjoying myself. And that if I get good enough to want to upgrade... there IS a payoff once you can hear it. Thanks.
Dat face Rubio makes at 12:08 when Rob guesses the 2nd guitar right all with the color xD
This has the best editing I've seen on youtube. Editor needs a raise.
I remeber watching this video when I started playing in 2017. I still am sh*t at guitar, but this stil gives me motivation to this day. So happy that I can watch it again. Thank you Rob!
man i forgot the konga line! damn i love it sooooo much!
You guys should do a blindfold test with some beginners or people that have only owned a maximum of 5 guitars in their life to see how well less experienced people notice the differences!
Especially since Lee keeps telling the difference only by the feel of the finish on the neck alone.
great idea. or get less experienced players to play them while rob and lee go blind.
TeKaMOTO and get an actual blind guy to join in
+Noisey Stooges
"I believe this is an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro in Alpine White played through a Marshall DSL40C Combo with a Tonecity Golden Plexi, a Dallas Arbiter FuzzFace and a Boss Jazz Chorus in the front of the amp. I hungry now."
Why would anyone want to know if a beginner or someone inexperienced with guitar can tell the difference? That’s the point of these videos. To help inexperienced people.
this guys are just the best fun on the internet for guitar players. Damn! (that pedal show is close, but guitars > pedals, so, its unfair)
Congrats Captain you got it! Chappers you too. Love these videos. Thanks! I have a Gibson Les Paul for years love it.
The Overdrive pedal challenge you mentioned last time would be great.
Slash signatures challenge. Gibson, Epiphone, Vintage and Harley Benton. Should bi interesting Between Vintage and Epiphone.
Guessed they probably don't. That'll make it more fun
But they don't stock Vintage or Harley Benton guitars so why would they advertise their products?
Harley Benton is Thomann's in-house budget brand.
Here 4 years later in 2020 , Cap has not won a challenge since. 😁
He got cursed by the synth pedal gods
Maybe you could do some high end boutique pedals vs their cheaper (maybe tone city or something) counterparts.
I'd also like to see some Squier's loaded up with high end pickups and you could either challenge them against the stock models or against higher end guitars, something like a standard squier with duncan ssl-1 pickups vs. and american standard with their stock pickups.
11:28 the way lee sits lmao he looks like a soccer mom
Well done Lee! Your reputation was seriously on the line in this video!!
Damn rob knows his shit
Lads.... what a great video!!! fantastic!!!!
Cheers guys
love your stuff
The editor seems to be having massive amounts of fun when editing this video. Love it!
Some Gibson SGs do have pickup rings. It depends on the pickguard, full pickguards have no rings, half pickguards have rings.
Gary Dotson I think Rabea was referring to the 2016 standard sg's. The 2016 models had big scratchplates and no pickup rings.
Thank you did not know
"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" - Captain
On point analysis by The Captian on the Gibson vs Epiphone challenge!
I think it's more distance from best Epiphones to Gibson than Squier Classic Vibe series to Fender.
Well... Squires are incredible, and Gibson's are overpriced, so what you said makes sense
yup, I concur.
JELIFISH19 - Nah, I agree with the OP. Top of the range Squier are closer to Fender branded, than Epiphones are to Gibsons.
I like this test better because you know Rob likes to cheat feeling the head stock and smelling the finish lol
And feeling the volume pointers ,truss rod screws, bridge pins, he just cheats, and pretends he can't find the volume knobs blindfolded, any player can find the controls without visual assistance, they should only touch the neck and strings, the tone isn't what their concentrating on.
Just like any good date!
"Well, if that isn't a Les Paul, my name is Sheila."
You're a true wizard, Rob.
37:58 pickups fizzy and too hot? What about lowering them?
Rob got pretty quiet when he felt the "e" on the pickguard on the epiphone dot and he guessed a gibson first
yeah.... what a hoax.
@Stephen Bowyer what do you mean “what a hoax?” They’re humans, they couldn’t even find the damn pickup selector with their blindfolds on 🤣🤣🤣 chill dude...
@jfre riley naah I’ll chill thank you very much...
As a reeds and keys player I know FA about guitars but this was one of the most interesting videos I've seen in ages. Fascinating to discover how subtle the differences are between various guitars and how you guys pick up on that. Excellent stuff :)
the captains ears are just outstanding....
The push pull pots ruined it, or Chappers did depending on your viewpoint.
Knowledge though
Lol rob... feeling the pots for push pull 35:40.... he knows the gibson aint got them.
kennymax8 yes they do.
its an option but i don't believe its standard
it is standard, the non high performance ones have these dumb features too.
André Hernández not dumb
The Epiphone Push Pull Knobs Feel Different
this was the most entertaining video Ive seen in a long time. cheers boys
Would be cute to put the same guitar back in his hands, turn off the tone pots and a quick detune. “What do think of THIS one?”
7:09 - I see a gap! on the left eyepatch near nose
Of all six, the Gibson Les Paul's tone really stood out for me. Just special and really satisfying. Great vid!
So it almost basically boils down to, do I want to spend 5 times more money for a logo?
Gibson’s have Brazilian rosewood fretboards milled (not glued) mahogany bodies and 1/2 inch maple caps epiphones bodies are glued in sections and have maple veneers and have something called pau ferry wood on the fretboards
The les Paul that is
The biggest difference with the SGs is actually how the neck feels, I love my cherry red Epiphone but the lacquer does feel different when they're brand spanking new... Once you wear it in, you don't regret saving the 600 or so bucks... Switches and pots are good, sounds lovely through my old Marshall SL100 or my little 15W Marshall practice amp.
@@1973retrorabbit i have a red epiphone sg too :) the action and playability of a gibson is worth it though
Ben Brennan that was the point
Man i loved your opening riff in the shred collab I even went as far se studying your guitar work and after 4 hours I nails it
I laughed so hard when Rob said this smells like a Gibson SG.
When Lee asked him to play AC/DC clearly he knew it was an SG
3:11 was some top notch editing, not something I would expect in a guitar video, give that person a raise.
Well, there's one dead giveaway for the Epiphone 335 - that big fat "E" ornament on the pick guard.
