The amount of times Pyramid Head should be used outside of SH2: 0.
Pyramid Head has to be one of the most milked (non s.exually) characters in the 2000 to 2015s
Pyramid is literally the Nemesis of the silent hill franchise, doomed to be milked dry and remade into oblivion. Also the first guy to be pulled into movies and used very badly in them.
As a man named James whose beautiful wife died of cancer. This game hits me on all kinds of levels. I know very intimately the feelings of frustration of dread of regret and remorse. I sometimes feel like I'm in Silent Hill with my mind walking through the fog of life.
Since no one has commented I just wanted to say that I’m very sorry for your loss. This might be bold of me to ask, but would you like to talk about your wife if it will make you feel better? You can say no if you don’t want to.
Sorry for your loss, dude. The game is super powerful with it's presentation and I'm truly heartbroken to see someone relate to it.
I really hope things get better for you, James
May our acknowledgement of your suffering alleviate it.
I'm sorry for your loss, and I wish for you to find strength to live on

I was taking the big head nurses as that they "know alot" (the big head) but are blind so they miss stuff or not really see what is going on. So James thinks they aren't helping his wife, but also that they are hot.
That.. actually makes a lot of sense.
This was what I was gonna say
@@nyx7694 Well you didn't, so you lost. This guy is now smarter and better than you and you should hand him all your money. 😔
You can also apply a more pessimistic reading of them, in the idea that they are disinterested and leave an impersonal or soulless impact, thus making them unmemorable.
Interesting! I always thought of them as being airheads, like James just saw the nurses that treated Mary as attractive but stupid (aka bimbos, for lack of better terminology)
Original Resident Evil comes out.
Silent Hill team is inspired by it and attempt to do something similar.
Several years later, Silent Hill PT comes out,
Capcom is inspired by Silent Hill PT then release Resident Evil 7

To a massively lesser extent, but I get what James goes through in this game. People complain about being lonely and not having someone to love and be loved, but what's worse is being with someone and seeing them as the most beautiful thing in the world but you can't/don't have those intimate moments for months or years on end. A bit like an extreme version of being touched starved.
I'm just glad me and my other half are working things through and I really do feel like we're finally seeing that light at the end of the tunnel.
I look at James guilt similarly to how parents feel raising their kids. It’s a completely human feeling to hate raising children and a lot of people feel it but society tells you can’t feel that way. In the same way James craves physical intimacy (for various reasons like coping with stress), but Mary’s condition takes priority. It doesn’t invalidate how he feels, but it’s obviously something that’s not really talked about and looked down upon.
10:07 Theres a woman i saw on instagram reels a little while back who has this whole travel blog of her moving to ireland or some place ater LEAVING HER FIANCÉ BECAUSE HE HAD CANCER, because she didint think it was fair for her to put her life on hold for his illness. She posts these clips about how happy she is getting hit on and going out with random men periodically. Some people just have no souls.
We did it. We found Jamie Sunderland if she was evil.
@@voidmonger3831 James is nowhere near that vile, he had conflicted feelings and remorse at least, he only snapped under pressure of the situation and immediately regretted it. Simply leaving and openly flaunting it is on another level of evil.
@@telefrag. To explain the reply, voidmonger said the woman is like James but evil. There you go.
I mean... strictly speaking, she's not inaccurate, and thank goodness her fiancé didn't end up married to someone who would treat him that way.
@@christopherclayton5500I will agree with this. Some people are just not mentally equipped to handle the burden of their loved one being sick and/or having to take care of them (very much like James), but very few people have the foresight to realize if they stay, this can build up anger and resentment. This woman walking away from her sick fiancé doesn’t entirely make her an evil person (better for the fiancé to spend his remaining time with people that actually love him and won’t resent him), what makes her evil is flaunting her new life and telling the world how better she is without the burden of her fiancé’s sickness, that shows how much of a heartless person she always was.
A somewhat better version of all this (better cause it has a happy ending), is with rapper Fat Joe. His son was born with a mental handicap and the mother of his child and her family explained they were not built to take care of a mentally handicapped child and argued for giving the child away to adoption. Fat Joe refused and said he is keeping his child, the mother and her family told him they will not be joining him on this endeavor and walked away. Fat Joe raised his and son and took care of him and still does till this day. Fat Joe has no resentment towards the mother of his son and understands some people are built different. The mother never came back or asked for any money and Fat Joe and his son are a happy family together.
The mannequins are such pranksters 😂 I love catching them striking a little pose as they try to remain innocuous standing upright against the wall. It’s like a dog freezing when you catch it trying to sneak a treat, just “who me? I’m just furniture, and you actually can’t see me :)”
16:03 The creature here is not a Closer, but a Mandarin as a Closer does not have mouths on its arms. Closers are creatures only found in Silent Hill 3.
Saying this game plays like every other survival horror game today is exactly how the original was as well so I can't understand people taking issue with that.
One thing that is really cool that I don't see many people talk about is how James looks over the course of the game. You can see bags form under his eyes and he just looks like he's been through it. They didn't have to do that and it's subtle enough that people are missing it.
I only really noticed it after the video tape. Dude looked like all the life got sucked out of him. In my opinion, that's what James looked like the whole time, and we only see it as he gets closer to the Truth.
27:30
Listen to Mary in the "Leave" ending. I think everyone but her having the weird voicework was definitely intentional, because they show that they could've done it the whole time at the end. Although, I do agree that the more convincing performances let people identify with the characters and their specific traumas far better and I really like the philosophy of the gameplay loop having to agree with the presentation
Also Silent Hill 3 just had great voice acting, so either they suddenly learned voice direction mid SH2 development or they made it weird on purpose
@@mono_lith_068 Sort of. "Team Silent" had drastic changes between the first 3 game releases, including directors and sound designers. I do love Silent Hill 3's performances, though
@@mono_lith_068I think it literally was just getting better at it between 2 and 3, because while 1 is dear to my heart its voice acting was terrible as well lol

You're like the only person who has made a Silent Hill video who doesn't call James a bad guy and actually understands his turmoil. Thank you for being correct.
Don't get me wrong, his turmoil and suffering ooze humanity in all of its emotional complexity, but at the end of the day, he did kill his innocent wife. He is not malevolent, but he is not a good guy.
@@lenompasbanal2478 dude, she asked him for this, the game talks about guilt and loss too, he had lost a considerable time with his wife, then lost her, a mere slice of chance of her being alive, well and still loving him is what made him go to SH to see if it was real
You can have all the complexity and depth in the world and killing your wife would still make you a bad person, dude
James is borderline evil but he is very human, he’s still terrible though.
Sidenote: I don’t mean in the cartoon villain way.
Bricky confirmed Chud lol
You're correct about the bubblehead nurses. Their heads are explicitly meant to represent condoms.
You also might notice when you headshot them white "stuff" comes out instead of blood.
Now thats nasty wow
Is this confirmed or are you just talking out the ass
I always thought it was to represent the smothering James did to his wife? They're entire faces are covered. Makes way more sense than condom lmao
Is that true, or are you talking out the ass?
Bricky: *Calls OG SH2 "Extremely old".
Me: *Played OG SH2 when I was 19*
Also me: *Cries old man tears*
i always thought that james sticking his hand somewhere that can potentially be dangerous shows how little he cares about himself and his well being
So this was my first time encountering a Silent Hill game and I absolutely adored this game, no notes to add to your commentary except that my husband and I LITERALLY passengered it so hard he started asking me about any lore he missed when I played without him lmao
I knew the entire story of Silent Hill 2 before the remake came out. I knew what James did, why, and so on. But I never actually played or listened to the story. Mary reading the letter at the very end, I have never cried so much to a video game before.
I don't view James as an evil person. What he did was messed up, sure, but the dynamic between him and Mary was complex, and her in that letter recognizing that James might hate her (which he did in the end to some extent), I don't know... I guess that thought of being terminally ill, dependent on those closest to you to be around you, and have them hate you for something you cannot control. I felt so bad for Mary, and she's in the game for less than 1% of it, yet there's so much character, all told through the eyes of James. Not through his actions, his words, no, his eyes.
Yeah I already played the original a few times but the remake's ending still made me cry, James's actor did such an amazing job.
One of the things I don't like about the remake is that you only get the final talk with Mary in the Leave ending. Because there is one piece of dialogue that really defines James.
James: The truth is, I hated you. I wanted you out of the way. I wanted to live my life
Mary: Then why do you look so sad?
James didn't hate his wife Mary, he hated the thing she became, the person that would spew hate and vitriol at him when he visited. Only to turn around and beg him to stay, giving off huge mixed signals
Great video my guy, loved it. Just a couple additions:
The Nurses have some more symbolism in that their heads are covered in a thin, fluid filled sac that prevents them from breathing. So, James smothering Mary.
Also, those aren’t Closers, they’re a different monster called Mandarins. Though tbh they’re basically the same monsters.
I just said the same thing about the nurses in another comment who claimed it really does represent condoms 😂
Just today I was reading some really bad news about copyrights in videogames, to the point it made me question my love for games and if I truly want to enter the gaming industry in the future. This video and your excellent analysis made me remember why I love the ART that goes in games, even if the business side can get depression to look at nowadays.
Thanks you Bricky for this reminder and I hope the see more developments in the gaming industry like this one.
(Also thank you for your video on Roboquest, one of my favorites Roguelites now next to Hades I & II
Do NOT go into the games industry to join the big corporations. You'll be exploited and then fired to be replaced next game making cycle. Strike out on your own if you need. There's no passion for games, and that's what is needed to make a good one. There is only want for more money.
Ah yes, my favourite traumatic experience: Signalis.
Love how you discuss a lot of the topics and themes of the game. Very enjoyable as always.
The Gallows is a horse, supposed to represent the Pale Rider or the Grim Reaper

21:27 funnily enough the original sh2 does have heavy attacks and light attacks for melee. only really matters in hard mode though

I just wanted to say thank you for going into huge detail in this review, on every aspect of this Remake. Even for a game I do not like, I had hoped it would better frame the original story and not shy away from its subject matter.
Bricky you should check out Mouthwashing if you want more human misery.
I think people saying that the "soul" was stripped from the remake in the sense that it's not re-inventing the genre forget that Silent Hill 1&2 are kinda pioneers in the first place.
This game was not only my first time playing SH2, but playing Silent Hill at all! I played it on hard, and I 100% admit that you SHOULD NOT for your first run of the game, but even tho I was mostly ready for the gameplay to end halfway through the hospitals otherworld... after sitting on my feelings for the game for a couple weeks, its phenomenal! Dont think im going to go back and get any of the better/joke endings, but I agree it shouldve been a contender for GOTY.
This is one of those rare situations where the fact that gaming "journalists" aren't playing the game to completion and aren't understanding what they are playing, works in game's favour. I totally expected that some outlets would smash the game for being offensive, hurting somebody's feelings and misinterpreting the whole thing but, as fair as I know, it didn't happen.
4 seconds ago is fucking diabolical mate
Bricky : this is a child, she is the worst:
me : how can you say something so controversial yet so brave.
Really enjoyed your return to positive content for games that you care about. The passion really shows through.
At 26:00 this was by far the scariest moment in the whole game for me. Hearing something running in the mud. No static warning me on my radio. And right as the sound starts getting close it backs off. It freaked me out so much i had to pause
Your description of the story and how it covers difficult subject matter is masterfully expressed. You did a really good job vocalising why it will always go down in history as one of the best survival horror stories of all time; its ability to cover topics that are just not normally possible to cover without pissing people off
7:39 To my mind, when you ask Maria about Jennifer Carroll, she says "idk, some dumb bitch... now keep looking at my swaying ass, while we go all the way to the other statue, what's the exact same thing, we will unfortunately have to pass through the strip club to get there, whoopsie! What can you do, eh? Soooo... unlucky-and-not-in-any-way-contrived-at-all!"
But the human piñata concept is clearly associated with Pyramid Head, as seen in "Misty Day, Remains of the Judgement", the Desolate Area's Inner Sanctum, and Maria's punishment for failure. It also draws upon the 12th Major Arcana in Tarot, the Hanged Man, which refers to being trapped, surrender to circumstance or finding a new perspective, reversed it refers to false perspective, rash coping rationalizations and delusions (such as James pretending iz fine, he killed Mary because of blue balls, or Maria pretending that boyfriend door is only thinking of himself, or indeed Angela, pretending that she is a degenerate schizophrenic because her Abstract Rain on a Wednesday graped her for being way too sexy man face guurll).
11:45 Yeah, funny that. Women do the same kind of movement, when you smother them with a pillow. So that means... they like it? Also that juxtaposed leg spasm when they crawl, that's genuinely inefficient for crawling in the real world? That also looks like they're being choked to death. I watched Silent Hill 2 with a Therapist, he spotted that little plot point immediately.
Enough about being down bad, time to be down sad.
23:13 James took the phrase "every hole's a goal" a bit too seriously.
12:35 I hope my area doesn't explode
For me, Eddie's glow up from the original is the scariest part. I have known people like Eddie before, and the performance sends shivers up my spine.
I love how after centering on james, and the other two, the last one you center on in the intro is pyramid head in the background when you say "torture devices" as if we dont know on how many levels that is true
passanger game is awesome, this is a game my wife will play while i play something second screeny...we often do this when we want to hang out together but dont want to talk since we both do that in our job all day , maybe its strange idk but we enjoy it alot xD

speaking of down bad, whens the subverse 1.0 review bricky?
@Bricky I knew I would have to brace myself playing the remake, because I had a beautiful wife who recently passed from cancer and I knew it would dredge up some awful feelings. To hear you discuss it and break open the core message of the game so effortlessly was so damn refreshing, and I truly appreciate someone having the balls to analyze something so sensitive in a non-patronizing way. These things are true, those feelings and frustrations absolutely exist, and those who've been through it know there's lots of workshops and seminars designed specifically to help couples cope with it. It's something not many creators explore successfully or even approach the reality of without pandering or resorting to cliches, yet Silent Hill lays bare every taboo and ugly truth of it and somehow emerges as something strangely beautiful--if not grotesque and deeply broken. I'm happy to say that as I played the game, although some themes were gut-wrenching and familiar, there were some clear distinctions between myself and James. I wouldn't trade the happy times with her for anything, but the bad times can be haunting and it's hard to deny the reality of that.
4:24 I actually expected them to go too far

11:40 always liked the interpretation that the fixation on legs, while having a *lot* of connections to James’ sexual frustration, had more to do with the fact that Mary was probably thrashing hers around when James was strangling her ☹️
Great work Brick, 10/10 vid would nut!
From watching a couple of playthroughs. I feel like they overdid it a bit with the Manikin Jump scares. The original leaned a lot more into the psychological and atmospheric horror. The remake does a great job of this as well, but it also leans way too much into jump scares. You can't really build up a tense and menacing atmosphere if you're constantly fighting manikins.
I think the gallows sounded more disturbing when it was horse room.
Luke Roberts really put his all into portraying James. It really made the character feel real to me and relatable too. All the VA's in this remake did amazing. Luke deserves an award!
Made it in the first minute for bricky boi "lover of sam "the hack" lake
I think one major thing with the gameplay of the Remake is it feels a lot better when you do not have the HUD elements on. It feels more like the original where you have little to no help with combat and/or exploring. Then, combat encounters can feel more daunting because you do not always know your ammo count or 100% where you are shooting (adds to the fact that James is just a regular guy and not some trained Resident Evil character). Plus, it just heightens the survival aspect by being careful with your resources and the horror aspect because, "Oh fucking god I panicked and missed a shot. Now, I need to reload while Pyramid Head is about to inject his Head into me."
The edits in this video are amazing truly loved them! cant wait to see more of this in upcoming reviews!
"Where goes the John Sunderland? That's right! It goes into the square hole!"
27:30 No hate to the new direction cause it’s great, but Maria is a prime example of the voice direction being solid in the original, there’s a level of venom directed in her performance that I think her remake performance lacks. And the letter read in the original is utterly fantastic and way better than the original.
I honestly like both versions of Maria, but in different parts, new maria shines really great with new lines and some great moments in general, but also OG Maria really was the best in the cast imho
There's a line from a Stephen R. Donaldson novel that came to mind:
"How do you hurt a man who's lost everything? Give him something back, broken."
One thing, the original monster designer worked with Blooper Team, so that's why the monsters are so well done.
And Akira's music score... still the greatest.
20:28 In my personal opinion this game's combat system is much better than in The Callisto Protocol. Also there's a little more depth to it than just swinging and shooting: hitting enemies in the back deals more damage (hitting them in the back while they haven't noticed you will knock them on the ground); shooting enemies in a leg with the handgun forces them to drop on a knee, letting you follow up with a melee attack that knocks them on the ground.
Honest to god, Bricky's dad like birds and the bees at 12:00 is just hilarious.
damn bro, the nurses got me acting silently
I’d like seeing him/you more than him/you being a voice in my head.

I feel like using The Thing as a reference to unnecessary movie remakes is probably the worst you could pick since the 1982 one is widely regarded as one of the best Sci-Fi movies ever.
Wow. I was never able to voice my feelings about ghost of tsushima, but you said it perfectly. It's difficult for me because I really like it because of how good it is but at the same time I can't like it as much as other people because I see that formula in there people have grown so tired of. Behind that amazingly beautiful wind mechanic, is the same checklist map that you just come back and forth to get all the checks done
3:02 HOLY COW can we get a The Thing video game remake

The game awards nominee section made me realise that MAN has this been a slow year for gaming, especially compared to the absolute insanity of last year

Glad to see a comprehensive review like this cause there are a couple of other people who are huge fans of the original so I was interested in their response to the remake but when I went to their playthrough all I heard was "James looks too good, combat is a bit too satisfying, voice acting sounds too coherent"
James , Mary and Abigail's head were 30% too big so they were patched lol. Having your character slide 5 feet toward the enemy sure is better than having to actually position yourself for combat and the voice direction is standard tv drama instead of something evocative fitting the story and themes
Went to silent hill looking for wife, left with the sickest dog ever.

25:15 Oh wow, they actually made two sperate cutscenes for this scene? One when you walk in the middle of the road and one if you are near the white wall.
As a huge fan of horror genre, I´ve been repeatedly disappointed by modern horrors throughout the years. Then Haunting of Hill House happened and I realized again why I love this genre. While not same in any way, I thought of Haunting series a lot while playing Silent Hill 2. It´s the relatable human factor. It does not just jump scare you, it crawls under your skin and live there, festering the thoughts and feelings we humans all know in some way. That is the true, pure horror in my opinion. Great observation on male depression btw, James really does portrati what broken man looks and acts like.
Somewhere sometime bricky is waiting to say quote “ Sam Lake you hack.”
21:26. I agree entirely as a veteran fan. The original Silent Hill 2 and 3 actually had block mechanics. 2, you stand still and hold "run." 3 you do the same with a weapon readied. It would negate 50% damage or so, I believe.
Bringing it back here wouldn't have been too bad, I think.
My wife hates scary movies, but when I played this game she was right there next to me. Helping through the puzzles and screaming through the jump scares lmao.
I watched Ray play this and I've been calling James "Sad Leon" in my head.
