  • in this video i am replacing the inner tie rod on the drivers side. it had a little bit of play when i would rock the wheel back and forth. This job is usually pretty straight forward, i did run into a little trouble, probably could have gotten it with a higher quality wrench. Enjoy the video and let me know if i missed anything.

Some guys are good mechanics and some guys are good at explaining; Erik is both. That makes this video a pleasure to watch.

It is essential to hold the gear rack steady with a 24mm open end wrench while applying 110lb-lbs to tighten or loosen the inner tie rod. you always hold on the left side, so if you do the right side, you have to remove the bellows on the left, too, and ask an assistant for help. You are wrecking your rack and pinion, hammering on that nut without anything to hold it

@@TheCraftyTech You should try to get your hands on the mercedes repair shop manual for these types of repairs. lots of important things in there.

@@TheCraftyTech Interesting, I guess that is the kind of real life mechanics stuff that doesn't make it into the repair manuals. These repair manuals are basically all my source of DIY repair information, no mechanics background whatsoever. Sent you an email. CJ

Why did you cut the inner tie rod - to get the boot? Can't you get it without cutting it? Thanks for the video

So what is the torque value for the tie rod end nut? That feels about right is not a torque value.....

Well with the Cotter pin it's hard to nail and torque value and get it lines up,. Minimum 30 foot pounds id figure, then tighten more till the next hole lines up.
