I bought this CD just because the album cover was so badass. I wasn’t really familiar with Deep Purple outside of Machine Head. However, when I first heard the guitar solo in BURN, I thought “this is way too modern for 1974”, it blew my mind. I’m a drummer, not a guitarist, but to me Blackmore really stands out as a guitarist. Legendary

People as Ritchie Blackmore were not educated to express their emotions by words. They protect their inner life with silence. So, they paint or make music to express or better, to talk. And some people as us, have no problems to understand Ritchie's expression of beauty and culture.

Daniel wildlife He was impressed with Hendrix’s presence and sound (even nicked his Afro hair style at one point) but I have heard him say in several interviews that he didn’t think he was a great guitarist.
He said he played a session with a guy in the early 60’s who looked at Ritchie’s hands to guide him as he couldn’t read music. When he played a solo Ritchie was blown away. It was Jeff Beck. He said “ When Jeff is on (in the zone), there’s no one better”. “He’s got notes on his guitar that I don’t have in mine”.

Interesting to hear it isolated, it has a completely different feel to it, compared to when you hear the solo with full band. If you should learn one blackmore solo, learn this one it sums up almost everything that is unique with his playing without overdoing anything. Maestro blackmore!!

Richie always had a perfect sense of timing and perfect phrasing in his lead playing, he played triplets sixteenth notes 8th notes, demisemiquaver 32nd notes, all in time with superb phrasing he never winged it like hendrix or Clapton, he had perfectly timed phrasing. Not to say that Clapton or Hendrix it’s not as good, but Richie had a different style, a more disciplined way of playing.

What I hear, besides stealing the magic away, is how sterile the studio must've been to record in. How hard it must be to record dry, and then hear the finished product with reverb put over the whole thing. Of course, mastering the entire song makes it difficult to actually learn this stuff as a player.
Also, the arpeggios are two guitars in harmony. There's only so much isolation you can do...

Sorry , im a bit late to this, but yes i agree with you there . I first became aware of Blackmore on a Rock Radio show , i was working in a Motorcycle Shop - Saturday afternoon , they played "Light in the Black" from "Rainbow Rising" . I struggled to hear who the band was due to the noise in the shop , but i was hooked , id never heard anything like it. When i figured it out , i was so excited , i got a bus to town and bought the album - it changed my life , and of course i also discovered he'd been in Deep Purple. I bought everything he'd done (1976).
So anyway - next thing- i went to see them , and was as equally disappointed as i had been excited. On record - Superb. Live- Atrocious . He just played trills and -as you say - whammy bar stuff .
Go back, listen to the record- Fantastic . Live - Never again . - Why?

In every street in the world there's a kid who can play Ritchie even smoother than him, but non of them can play Hendrix and SRV. They can play notes, but doesn't sound even close. It shows the difference between good guitar player like Ritchie was and guitar genius like Jimi and SRV. Without John Lord, Ritchie sucks a bit...
