This is such a clear example of access mattering. European and Indian players have access to a ton of FIDE tournaments, so they tend to be properly rated. American players (south, central, and north) have fewer options, so they either have to spend a ton of money traveling, or they just stay incredibly underrated. The fact that Jospem is a top 200 player in the world despite playing so few OTB events is a testament to this.

    • @spasibushki

and given all that he is still top 25 in fide blitz, could probably be top 10-15 if he had a better access to tournaments

This surely is a thing but take it easy, Jospem will not be top 30 in classical if he moves to Europe, he is a blitz beast this happens to all levels ppl who are stronger in a certain time control

    • @shubomb

Some of these top players need to know that an innocent player being accused of cheating is worse than a cheater not getting banned. Publicly accusing anyone serves no purpose other than starting a witch hunt against the said player. And it takes nothing to accuse someone, just defeat a top player once and you're apparently cheating if you're not rated above 2700. And all it takes is one accusation for everyone to see all your subsequent results with doubt.

Hikaru saying so is what convinces you? Not him playing well in front of a camera crew? Hikaru fans are so weird with the way they treat his word like law. Hikaru has wrongly accused Tang, Erigaisi, and Supi, so I'm not sure how much his opinion on who's cheating is worth. Definitely not worth more than playing in front of a camera crew where it's impossible to cheat.

He played a tournament with people in the room watching him and filming him. With all that pressure, he came second. Then, he played a match with Danya - one of the strongest players in speed chess - and he only barely lost 4.5-5.5. It shows he is genuine and can compete with the best. It may be strange that he is much stronger in online chess than over the board. Maybe it is psychology. Maybe it's just that he doesn't get to play many OTB tournaments so that could be an uncomfortable experience. Most major OTB tournaments are still held in Europe and sometimes Asia. For someone from Mexico without the support system of countries with much stronger chess cultures, the expense of travelling would be a problem. The ability to fly all over the world just to play chess is still a luxury that many strong players from India and Eastern Europe don't get to enjoy. The Internet really is the big equaliser.

The only good that has ever come out of any of Kramnik's accusations is that we got this very well done documentary on Jose Martinez Alcantara. Very strong and personable player who never would have come on my radar otherwise since I am not fluent in Spanish. But chess transcends language. It is a perfect game in the eyes of many. Does cheating happen? Of course, there are cheaters in every popular game. But Kramnik really needs to hold his tongue. His constant string of accusations, both explicit and implicit, do more harm than good, especially when he's so blatantly wrong and has been caught cheating himself in the past. Kramnik is a strong player but his constant string of baseless accusations make him an embarrassment to the game, imho.
