As a 56 year old white guy, this movie still brings me to tears each time I've seen it (which has been many) since it was first released. Yes, it's a African American story which I can appreciate, but it also truly crosses over any race and tells a very "human" story. One of my all time fave movies with perfect casting and can't imagine any other actor playing any of the roles. Truly sad that it never got the awards it truly deserved.
I'm a 55 year old white guy and I couldn't agree more. One of my favorite films of all time, I own it on DVD and every time I watch it, it brings me to tears. Especially when Mr. drives Nettie away in the beginning, her screaming "Why".... I choke up just thinking about it and the reunion at the end. I'm a puddle.
Quincy Jones poured everything he was into creating the music for this masterpiece. It left him exhausted. His incredible soundtrack deserved an Oscar.

An Oscar means nothing. The power this film and soundtrack emanate is incredible. Universally loved the world over. Watching it gets me right in the heart every time.

Oh my gosh, the scene of young Celie and Nettie being torn apart...I can never watch it without bawling. Just seeing bits of it here has me tearing up. Nettie's heartbroken "Why?!" just rips your guts out. Poor little girl. She'd done nothing wrong, and was being treated so horribly.

Great upload. _TCP_ received a somewhat muted response in 1985 but time has revealed it to be among the great American films & Whoopi gives one of the best performances ever captured on film. Top 4 Spielberg, easily - a miracle of a film. That he went from _Temple Of Doom_ in 1984 to *this* is incredible.

As someone who’s father abandoned him, when Shug Avery bursts into the doors of the church to win her father’s love… it always makes me cry. It is so spiritual and beautiful.
"See, daddy? Sinners have soul too." And she surrenders all her bitterness, anger hurt and pride in that moment and unbelievably, her father does too. When he returns her embrace, you see on her face and in her body the release of decades of pain and finally feeling love and acceptance from her father.
The first time I saw this movie I was pulled into it emotionally in a big way when Celie and Shug are sitting on the bed reading the very first letter. I realized in that moment that I was watching an exceptional artistic achievement. Thank you, Steven Spielberg for taking the risks to make "The Color Purple."
I cry when i watch it and I’ve seen it at least a hundred times. The way every character committed to character was amazing. Oprah was very wet behind the ears and she said that the actor who played the Mister’s dad, “Adolph Caesar” told her that she had to allow the spirit of the character to take over her. She understood the assignment!

There was a certain magic about Spielberg & Amblin Entertainment during the 80s, and this was one of their many classics! Long before Titanic, this film was nominated for 11 Oscars ... and it didn't even win ONE, which is just mind-boggling! I bet if it had come out today, it would have won several Oscars ... not just because it was such a great film, but because of the ongoing barrage of identity politics in Hollywood today!
Spielberg shared a story the world needed to see. No one else did it, he did. I think many were simply jealous they didn't have his clout or financial backing to do this film. It was brilliant - period. Thank you Stephen! 🕊🌿

I enjoyed the making of The Color Purple just as much as I did the movie. I don't think there is anyone on this earth who has watched this movie more than I. My family was sick of me and watching this movie, I went through I don't know how many vhs tapes, I played them until they didn't play anymore.

I was 5 yrs old when this came out. I remember scenes here n there but mostly I remember feeling sad and even frightened (of Mister). Now...at 40, mother of 4...idk if I could watch this and not alternate between anger and tears. I now know too much, have seen too much & have been thru too much to not internalize this story. Like OW said "its a classic story", especially in the ADOS community. Love, abuse, separation of family, joy, pain, degradation, triumph...so real and SO POWERFUL!
I’m in my 40s also, and I can understand what you are saying. For me, it used to be hard to see movies with families and lives torn apart, but as I e gotten older, I love the beauty in the sort of “full circle-ness” of it. That gives me hope now. And what Danny Glover said is so true about how age is an equalizer, it can help us see things differently. I hope you may find this true for you. 😊

Those scenes where Ceilie was envisioning being in Africa as she read her sister’s letters are the most breathtakingly beautiful to me! 📝📬💌 The acting, directing, costumes, soundtrack, and everything about this movie was Oscar worthy. Yet it didn’t win a single award. And I can’t understand why this movie didn’t win an Oscar at least for the cinematography.💔 I hope that the 2023 remake will live up to the original movie. If so, it will be interesting to see if the Oscar academy will grant it an award for any category or aspect of this film.😒

So many scenes make me cry in this movie... But the Scene when Shug dedicate the song to Celie also always break me up.. Because to me that was the doors of her independence unlocking. Shug was involved in all of those freeing moments for her... With this film... You don't watch it... You live in it... Just stunning.
This is by far my favorite movie. As far as I’m concerned, it out shines any film made before or since. Everyone who had a part in making it did the best work of their lives. The fact that Ms. Goldberg got an Oscar for Ghost but not this has always blown me away. The fact that out of 11 Oscar nominations it won nothing, shows me how little the Oscar’s really mean.
For the longest time it was referred to as "The movie that directed itself", because according to the Academy, by not even nominating Spielberg for an Oscar, apparently it didn't need one.
I could not have stated it any better. Every actor was perfect. So many parts of this movie were so memorable. Best movie EVER made. Some of it is brutally hard to watch but it’s all great and a great ending. After that movie every time I see the color of Purple especially in nature I am in aw of how unique that color actually is.
In my humble opinion, Spielberg, Scorsese, Coppola, Lucas, Eastwood, Tarantino, Stone, Ford, Wells, and Lee are some of the best directors of all time.
My favorite anecdote about the making of this film is that Quincy Jones always had Steven Spielberg in mind to direct, but Spielberg graciously declined because he felt he wouldn’t be able to do this story about African-American repression justice. Jones convinced Spielberg by saying “You didn’t need to be a Shark to direct Jaws or an Alien to direct E.T.”

Nobody ever wants to mention the lesbianism but wow Spielberg did a great job of giving them space for the scene. Can’t be as detailed as the book due to rampant homophobia but he also didn’t shy from it
I recall seeing this for the very first time.. BLEW ME AWAY!!! Incredible story, performances, EVERYTHING! While watching the movie, I felt transformed back in time to rural Georgia . Should have won best picture for 1985! All of the acting, down to the smallest role was stellar, in my opinion. Upon leaving the theater, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.😢The soundtrack was awesome as well!
I saw Danny Glover once,a few years ago..in My country , Uruguay..🇺🇾 I was about to guet in a very classic and historical tango bar in Montevideo, whith stairs close to the door. And I hear a litlle boy Yelling: Danny Glover,Danny Glover!!! (It was plenty Of people) Then I looked behind me ....and there he was!!!!Just standing behind me!!! 🤩Dinn't spect for this,But It was magical!!!
One of the BEST films ever made. Standout performances all around. Steven, Whoopi, and Glover should have ALL WON OSCARS for this film, but the Academy was not to terribly fond of Spielberg back then. You know how political it always was. I'm a Black person, your comment that this is how Black people live is insulting. Not even all true of Black Americans, let alone the the majority 96% of the Black population in the world who are not from or in the US. The themes of the story are universally relatable & that's why people from different cultures love the movie. It was the first movie I saw I moved to the US to attend university. It would have been ridiculous for me to think that this single fictional story was representative of the Black American experience.
Once I wrote / directed / /edited / produced this one short film. One of the main actors was in NY trained for the theater stage. We met abroad for a production and got along well. At the time I was working as the Assistant to the Director, and also was getting my things into gear. With the script done, I told him that this project would never be done unless he was the main male lead. So his initial reaction was that he wanted to work with me on the script. When he got my first draft, he was like "Don't change a word." It was more or less basically written for him, but I told him to say certain lines as a throwaway line (he emphasized everything on the first take as if he would be on a theater stage). And he had to act against an "amateur" actress, who flubbed her few lines and kinda wasn't used to how film sets work He - in later workshops that he held - told everyone that the best advice he was given was more or less like "Nikita told me that he wrote the script and he as a Director...this line is not important. Just drop it." Here's the key for movies. My other lead was severely intimidated, since she didn't understand that - even though the budget was poor - production values would be more than she expected them to be. The D.O.P. insisted to try to prove me wrong in pre-production when I, due to logistics (and for budgetary reasons), had to show him that his elaborate lighting set-rig never would work for this gig. It was a happy accident that I am still proud of.
Hollywood not giving Whoopi that Oscar for this film will never sit right with me.
Or Diana Ross for Lady sings the Blues. A true travesty, also Barry Gordy not letting the cast of Sparkle do the soundtrack

The book was an epistolary novel, so the mailbox being a character was so smart. Such a masterpiece this movie.

I enjoyed the making of The Color Purple just as much as I did the movie. I don't think there is anyone on this earth who has watched this movie more than I. My family was sick of me and watching this movie, I went through I don't know how many vhs tapes, I played them until they didn't play anymore.
When movies are so special to you, they become your friends. This movie and its music is a great friend to me, and it's always joy when we visit from time to time over the years. A classic. x
The Color Purple is a timeless work. A timeless representation of life. The acting and the direction were beyond great, they were genius.
I was 5 yrs old when this came out. I remember scenes here n there but mostly I remember feeling sad and even frightened (of Mister). Now...at 40, mother of 4...idk if I could watch this and not alternate between anger and tears. I now know too much, have seen too much & have been thru too much to not internalize this story. Like OW said "its a classic story", especially in the ADOS community. Love, abuse, separation of family, joy, pain, degradation, triumph...so real and SO POWERFUL!
I’m in my 40s also, and I can understand what you are saying. For me, it used to be hard to see movies with families and lives torn apart, but as I e gotten older, I love the beauty in the sort of “full circle-ness” of it. That gives me hope now. And what Danny Glover said is so true about how age is an equalizer, it can help us see things differently. I hope you may find this true for you. 😊

The acting, directing, costumes, soundtrack, and everything about this movie was Oscar worthy. Yet it didn’t win a single award. And I can’t understand why this movie didn’t win an Oscar at least for the cinematography.💔
I hope that the 2023 remake will live up to the original movie. If so, it will be interesting to see if the Oscar academy will grant it an award for any category or aspect of this film.😒

So many scenes make me cry in this movie... But the Scene when Shug dedicate the song to Celie also always break me up.. Because to me that was the doors of her independence unlocking. Shug was involved in all of those freeing moments for her... With this film... You don't watch it... You live in it... Just stunning.
This is by far my favorite movie. As far as I’m concerned, it out shines any film made before or since. Everyone who had a part in making it did the best work of their lives. The fact that Ms. Goldberg got an Oscar for Ghost but not this has always blown me away. The fact that out of 11 Oscar nominations it won nothing, shows me how little the Oscar’s really mean.
For the longest time it was referred to as "The movie that directed itself", because according to the Academy, by not even nominating Spielberg for an Oscar, apparently it didn't need one.
I could not have stated it any better. Every actor was perfect. So many parts of this movie were so memorable. Best movie EVER made. Some of it is brutally hard to watch but it’s all great and a great ending. After that movie every time I see the color of Purple especially in nature I am in aw of how unique that color actually is.

Watched it last night in preparation for directing a short in Spielberg's style. Astonishing film and story!
In my humble opinion, Spielberg, Scorsese, Coppola, Lucas, Eastwood, Tarantino, Stone, Ford, Wells, and Lee are some of the best directors of all time.
My favorite anecdote about the making of this film is that Quincy Jones always had Steven Spielberg in mind to direct, but Spielberg graciously declined because he felt he wouldn’t be able to do this story about African-American repression justice. Jones convinced Spielberg by saying “You didn’t need to be a Shark to direct Jaws or an Alien to direct E.T.”

Nobody ever wants to mention the lesbianism but wow Spielberg did a great job of giving them space for the scene. Can’t be as detailed as the book due to rampant homophobia but he also didn’t shy from it

While watching the movie, I felt transformed back in time to rural Georgia . Should have won best picture for 1985!
All of the acting, down to the smallest role was stellar, in my opinion. Upon leaving the theater, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.😢The soundtrack was awesome as well!

I saw Danny Glover once,a few years ago..in My country , Uruguay..🇺🇾 I was about to guet in a very classic and historical tango bar in Montevideo, whith stairs close to the door. And I hear a litlle boy Yelling: Danny Glover,Danny Glover!!! (It was plenty Of people) Then I looked behind me ....and there he was!!!!Just standing behind me!!! 🤩Dinn't spect for this,But It was magical!!!
Although I understand the disappointment with this film not receiving an oscar, but this film is remembered more than the films which did get oscars.
One of the BEST films ever made. Standout performances all around. Steven, Whoopi, and Glover should have ALL WON OSCARS for this film, but the Academy was not to terribly fond of Spielberg back then. You know how political it always was. I still watch this film at least once a year. It is just such a beautiful film to watch. 💜

I'm a Black person, your comment that this is how Black people live is insulting. Not even all true of Black Americans, let alone the the majority 96% of the Black population in the world who are not from or in the US. The themes of the story are universally relatable & that's why people from different cultures love the movie. It was the first movie I saw I moved to the US to attend university. It would have been ridiculous for me to think that this single fictional story was representative of the Black American experience.

Once I wrote / directed / /edited / produced this one short film.
One of the main actors was in NY trained for the theater stage. We met abroad for a production and got along well. At the time I was working as the Assistant to the Director, and also was getting my things into gear.
With the script done, I told him that this project would never be done unless he was the main male lead.
So his initial reaction was that he wanted to work with me on the script. When he got my first draft, he was like "Don't change a word."
It was more or less basically written for him, but I told him to say certain lines as a throwaway line (he emphasized everything on the first take as if he would be on a theater stage).
And he had to act against an "amateur" actress, who flubbed her few lines and kinda wasn't used to how film sets work
He - in later workshops that he held - told everyone that the best advice he was given was more or less like "Nikita told me that he wrote the script and he as a Director...this line is not important. Just drop it."
Here's the key for movies. My other lead was severely intimidated, since she didn't understand that - even though the budget was poor - production values would be more than she expected them to be.
The D.O.P. insisted to try to prove me wrong in pre-production when I, due to logistics (and for budgetary reasons), had to show him that his elaborate lighting set-rig never would work for this gig.
It was a happy accident that I am still proud of.
