  • In this video I compare two very similar fountain pens, the pilot vanishing point (pilot capless) and the Moon man fountain pen (Mahjon). They're both great fountain pens for journaling and every day use, I use mine in my hobonichi cousin!
PS ITS AN ALLOY NIB - not steel, I knew I would mess it up lol!
Let me know what you think and I hope you enjoy!
Links to the pens are here:

Thank you so much for this video. I just ordered a Pilot Capless Deep Yellow pen on Ebay and couldn't find a review anywhere. When yours popped up I was sooo happy and grateful 😂🎉

I own a pilot vanishing point, several Moonman A1s, and the new Moonman A2's and I must say I love these Moonman's. I'm particular to the A2 because the acrylic body makes the pen significantly lighter and so more comfortable for long writing sessions.
Because the nib units are interchangeable, I have quite a few Pilot gold nib units inside of my Moonman body's although I like the moon man nib.

I live in Germany and I have 2 Capless with gold nibs, an EF and an M. I was always a little bothered by the clip and when I found the Majohn A1 Press on Amazon, I got the orange version without clip (just has a roll stop) and I love it. I‘ve had it inked up for 4 months now and it has never dried up on me, even when not using it for a week - that has always been a problem with my Pilot Capless. Last month I got the matte black version without clip and put a Pilot Namiki Black cartridge in it… such a plus to be able to use Pilot cartridges. I have so many of them lying around… finally a use for them. The matte black one writes super smoothly and I use it on a day to day basis. I wouldn‘t give away my 2 Capless, they will stay in my collection, but I actually prefer the Majohn A1 Press now.

Capless is what Pilot calls the VPs in other markets, like Japan and it is offered in gold nib and steel nib variants. In the US, they are called Vanishing Points and are only available with gold nibs.
There are some really decent Chinese pens out there, I have been pleased with the Asvine branded pens. They come in vacuum and piston filler models for ~$40 USD and write very nicely.

Thanks for sharing your comparison! I’ve tried the exact same pilot you have & a majohn and had terrible luck with both hard starting & skipping😢. See Amy Draw posted a platinum curidas retractable and I caved and bought in EF & F and effin’ love them! I have to use a retractable for work so that piece was super important to me! Love seeing others try these pens out with good luck!!

I have no business buying another pen🙈however… that Moon Man is winking at me! I love the darker body color, that bold writing and I was screaming “It looks like 0.7!” which I personally LOOOOOOVE…😊 Your pup at the end steals the show , I went from oooh pens to oooh pupper 😍💕🐾🐾

I’m glad you like it!! It’s a great pen. 🖤

Thanks for the comparison. I am having a PAD attack and I have been researching the capless pens. It's not like I need another pen, it's just like I NEED another pen and there is no capless clicker in the collection. Oh! woe is me...

I don't particularly find the design of the "capless/Vanishing Point/Decimo" my, ah, jam... but that "YELLOW" just calls to me... I have eyed it a time or two on Amazon just because of the color... It is so reminiscent of the classic Parker Duofold in (that gorgeous, gorgeous) Mandarin that is my grail, and would too quickly acquire if ever I won the lottery, lol. Anyway, the Moonman looks like a great value, but is too "orange." I have hunt and seized far too many fountain pens, and most at great expense, just because of the "Mandarin Yellow" color *(example, my Wahl-Eversharp Decoband in Mandarin Yellow, the Bittner/Pleasure of Writing exclusive). Far too expensive but I had to have it. And now because of this incredible video, I have the Pilot (via your link) in my cart. Why... why... did I click on this video... lol. Thank you, I think....

Steel is an alloy, that’s just Pilot giving the non-gold version a fancy name

Moonman, because it is cheaper and I do like a thicker line, the VP line looks okay as well I don’t think it would be to fine

Honestly...I would by a replacement actual vanishing point nib and put it in the capless and put the capless nib in the moomman... Personally speaking I love my fine vanishing point more than my fine 823 and soft fine 912... For some reason I just love it next...ymmv... Pen choice problems are the best problems to have 😁

    Pilot is 33 gms.
    Moonman is 32 gms.
Conclusion: Less expensive materials were used in moonman.🤡
