  • In this Vanishing Point Nib and Line Comparison, we are using our Nib Log template to determine line widths for each of the different nib sizes that a Pilot Vanishing Point nib comes in! Although Pilot VPs are only available in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad and Stub in the US, in Japan, they can also come in Fine Medium. This video is the follow-up to our Pilot Vanishing Point Explained video, where we introduce some of the special features of the Vanishing Point and talk about the history behind the world's best known capless fountain pen. Once you've figured out with Vanishing Point model you love, this video should help you to find your perfect Pilot VP nib out of the 6 available options! Thanks for watching :)

    Omg it would be so cool if you could eventually rank the different nibs in different brands that you’ve tested by their line width as a reference chart

      For sure! that's the idea :) Thanks for watching Christine!

    I'm definitely on the extra fine or fine side of this pen. I love your ink & pen tests, it's very conscientious, there's nothing missing. It makes it so much easier to decide. Thank you!

    I love my PIlot Vanishing Point! I currently have a M nib, which is very smooth and perfectly shows off inks. I am looking to buy a finer nib though and was torn between EF and F - but this video has helped so much! I think I'll go the F nib :) Great comparison between the nib sizes.

    The nib log template is such a good idea. Thank you for making it available as a free download. For people who are very organized, the template seems like a great way to standardize pen testing. Would you consider writing Chinese or kanji characters in your pen testing videos? It seems like Yoseka has a strong focus on East Asian fountain pens, so it would make sense to also test writing East Asian characters.

      Great idea!! I would love to but trust me...you don't want me writing characters hahah

    This is so helpful! In general, writing with any pen with a nib size > 0.5 makes me feel like I'm shouting though I go back and forth about choosing EF or F. I'd love to see you run the same tests with a European brand, for example Kaweco, so folks can have a better sense of the difference between a Japanese F and a European F. Thanks again!! 🙌

    Hi Daisy. I would have preferred that the tests were done using something other than a non coated paper like Midori (which I love and have been using for a long time now) and ink tends to be sucked into the paper rather quickly. However, since all the tests were done using the same paper the results are indeed valid and greatly appreciated. Thank you for sharing this. Love you guys/gals at Yoeska and I hope to visit Yeseka one of these days as I'm only a borough away lol.

    Super helpful video as I think about swapping out the Medium nib in my VP! It was thicker than I expected after using a different Pilot pen with a Fine nib (maybe because there's actually Fine Medium in between).

    • @Yoseka
      @Yoseka  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, that's definitely why there's a rather large jump from Fine to Medium across most Pilot fountain pens! Glad this video was helpful :)

    This video was very helpful. I have no experience with Japanese nibs. From what I see, they write a little finer than the TWSBI's that I use. The pens are not cheap and there is no place local to test one out. That means I have to buy online.I am starting with the fine and the stub. If all goes well I'll add a medium. The fine will be used at work since I need something good on copy paper. The medium should be perfect on my desk or at home when it is desirable to see what the ink really looks like. Finally the stub for letters and a few product labels that I want to look good.

    While on the subject of retractable fountain pens, I’d love to see a video like this for the Platinum Curidas. That’s the one I’m considering but I’ve never bought a pen with a Japanese nib so it would be super helpful for choosing a size because the fine nib Twsbi Eco is the line thickness that suits my writing best.

    The VP has pros and cons like any pen, I only wish the nib units weren’t 2/3 the price of the pen.
    I was given a stub nib VP as a gift, and I love it, but it’s hard to justify getting a fine nib for general writing where I’d use it more cause it’s so expensive.

    You guys are absofreakinglutely geniuses!
    Hou took an abstract idea of a nib sizes that are arbitrary oer each manufacturer and you standardised into the metric system! Just pure genius! 🎉❤
    I had been waiting for this video since you announced on oins and needles! But you did it even soo much better with your standardised nib-callibration sheets! 🤩
    Thank you soo much for this comparison... I have these in every nib size and now I can go back and decide which sailor or twsbi or 3776 or Faber-Castell Guilloche line-up (hint hint) I can buy from you! Arghhhh still completely mindblown! Genius! 🎉

    I LOVE Namiki Fountsin pens. I have on with the broad nib. While I love the broad tip as I use it for everday writing, I sm starting to want a smaller nib. My question: I am thinking of going to either a fine or medium. I would be using regular cheap paper. So would a fine wet and thicker? And would medium still be aa thick and wide like my broad nib using everyday paper?

    I think twisbis extra fine will be pilot’s fine, when i inked my twisbi vac 700 extra fine with pelikan 4001 brilliant black it short of gave me fine nib vibe as the lines were noticeably thicker being an extra fine

    Thank you so much! This was really helpful. Now I need to decide whether I want to purchase an extra fine or fine. I don’t want my pen to feel too “scratchy,” but I love writing with smaller nibs. Ugh decisions, decisions. Lol

    • @Yoseka

      It's a tough decision but would probably go with the F for smoother writing and still, a very fine line width :)

    Thank you so much for doing this video. I had been wondering about this. I have the EF VP (love how it writes, it's my main pen) and I have been on the fence about getting another one with a fine nib. Now I'm sure I want the fine nib one. In normal pens I never like anything above a 0.5mm and usually prefer something in the 0.3- 0.4mm range. I also write pretty small, which is one of the reasons I love Japanese planners.

    • @Yoseka
      @Yoseka  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching! Yeah I would say the EF and the F are different enough to justify getting both :)

    Love this test. Could you make a download with one template per page so we can print on A5 paper? My download had 2 side by side. Also, I might be splitting hairs here but wouldn't the use of the ruler in the line test constrain the tines on the nib from spreading naturally? :-) Love you guys and I love Yoseka!

    • @Yoseka
      @Yoseka  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Joe! Good point about the ruler but I think the difference would probably be very nominal? Definitely something to think about though, thank you!

    Hello, i saw a review that said that you have to hold the pen high with the stub nib otherwise it won't write as well as at a low angle. What do you say ?

  • @gorgoneion

    I have vp fine nub and at the upstrokes and right to left the flow is poor and also at fast writing is skipping. Very annoying for such a pen...... I really dont know what fo do since much cheaper pens are writing flawless..

    • @theibecks
      @theibecks 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That sounds like it needs a bit of tuning. I have multiple VP fine nibs and they're all perfectly well-behaved, so yours is definitely not the expected experience with these nibs.

    That is a very strange looking pen, and the pocket clip does not look like it would be comfortable to write with!

    • @theibecks
      @theibecks 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Strange-looking but a great pen. Comfort depends on your grip. Most people with a tripod grip find that their thumb and forefinger sit perfectly on either side of the clip. It can also help you to orientate the pen on the page without looking at it so it does have some advantages. For other types of grip it can be more of an issue but you'd have to try it and see.
