  • That video took a little while to edit, it’s my first time using two cameras.
    I’ve accumulated a lot of fountain pens over the years, here is my entry-level collection. I also have a few more expensive pens (that I would call mid-range), I might make a video on them later if you’re interested.
    In this video I’m talking about the things I like and don’t like about those different fountain pens that are often recommended for beginners.
    Please tell me about your favourite fountain pen in the comment section and let’s nerd out about it.
    Here are the pens mentioned in this video as well as the time stamps.

    With the TWSBI Eco (and any TWSBI), I always screw the caps on until they stop and no more. TWSBI pens are made of polycarbonate which is super impact resistant but also really susceptible to environmental stress cracking. Even though you can drop them or hit them really hard and they won't crack or break, if the parts are tightened too snugly or there is too much tension, it will split or crack after some time. Polycarbonate is interesting because unlike other materials, it won't give you any indication that it is overtightened right away. You will only know a few months later when it splits. What I do with all my TWSBI pens when I first get them is that I undo the piston mechanism slightly and screw it back down so it just stops and stays. I cap all of mine carefully and don't tighten the caps down. I just screw them until they stop. I have a pretty big collection of Ecos and have been collecting them since they first came out. I haven't had any issues after I did what I did with making sure things are not super tight. In my family several of my family members also have the Eco, and they haven't had any issues either after following my advice. I kind of wish they made them out of PMMA like Pilot does, but if you drop that, the cracking is immediate. It's not as impact resistant as polycarbonate is

      That seems like a lot of precautions but I’ll try it out. Funny thing, my two eco-t did not crack 🧐

    thank you for sharing your collection and thoughts. you have a nice selection of fountain pens. I wish my collection was that manageable! I’m sorry you’ve had cracking on your TWSBI’s. They have the best nibs but I’ve read they sometimes crack. 😊

      I’m glad you enjoyed, it’s just part of my collection, I’ll show my more expensive pens an other time ☺️ the Twsbi nibs are so good, but I’m too annoyed with the cracking.

    My first pen was a charcoal black Lamy Safari. I ended up not liking it because the converter dried out after a few weeks of not using it. I swapped it out for a TWSBI Eco, but fell in love with the Diamond 580 ALR. Especially since the grip unscrews for filling with an ink syringe. That's probably the last one I'll ever buy. I've seen other pens I like, but I can't justify getting them.

    I bought 2 Lamy’s (Bright Pink and a Vista) and the Retro Pop dark grey Pilot MR3 a couple years ago now, so glad to know I picked a couple of goodies for my first ones.
    I also have 2 ‘cheap” Schneider Easy’s… and a red Platinum Peppy.. both of which I really like because they always just work… and the green Sailor Fude just because it was intriguing!
    I have all of them inked with Carbon Black except the Preppy (I just refill its cartridge with a Blood Red ink)….because I’m pretty much just into black ink that’s waterproof for line and wash sketching so I don’t have the ink addiction either 😂
    I did go down the rabbit hole and watch millions of videos but luckily I managed to hold onto my wallet by telling myself I didn’t need more FP’s (yet) and rode the want wave until my obsession turned to another craft (as it often does)… but I still watch videos like yours every month or 2 🫶

      Carbon black really is the best black I’ve tried! It won’t budge even with watercolours!
      A few good and reliable fountain pens is really all you need ☺️

    I think the Perkeo is the best pen from Kerkeo. It cost less and will take a long international cart.

    I have a TWSBI Diamond 580 ALR Prussian Blue. It's more expensive than the ECO but apparently less susceptible to cracking.

    Not a bad beginner collection, if you add up ur twsbis you could buy a solid pilot E95 or your capless for the price and a gold nib that is. Just sharing my view.

    • @SweetLittleCarrot
      @SweetLittleCarrot  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I know! I wish I thought of that earlier but at the time I was thinking, it’s just a 40$ pen, it’s not too bad! But it add up and could even be a cute sailor pen instead. Oh you live and you learn…

    If you have problems with twsbi use the warranty they replace all the parts I never have a broken one 😂. A Kaweco whit a crack 🤔is rare for me. Lamy Safari I realy don't like the triangular grip but one of my favorite pens is the Lamy 2000.
    For me the best beginner pen is the pilot varsity $3 cheap disposable fp. I like Benu pens the nibs are very good i think every one will have a favorite brand or pen we only have to discover it.

    • @SweetLittleCarrot
      @SweetLittleCarrot  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve used the warranty once for two pens but I don’t have the motivation to do it again.
      The crack on the kaweco is more a hairline crack and ink stained it, but it doesn’t go all the way. I think it’s more obvious because of the pastel colour.
      The varsity is such a reliable one! And it lasts so long too! Great choice.

      Yeah, I would dare to try an other model either, that’s just to risky, I can’t believe they won’t do anything to fix it.
