First they had reformatory and they were an agoge, then they had group homes but kids and staff were lousy and the ones who did right couldn't do anything about the wrong, then they had boot camp for guys to feast on em again and now they just have jail because they get more money than ever by it. They are either nothing money chips or on the menu - even though there are non criminal homes, many, and some boys just rotate through em until 18. It has never been an area to "clean up" because they would have to pay monitors. We never thought reformatory was for anything but work farm of abuse....that was why they closed and "group home" opened.

My dad spent 6 yrs here. His stories, as little as he would detail, were horrendous. My uncle, his twin, was there the last yr of my dad's stay. He said my dad was sexually and physically abused and he believes even raped. They both told stories of beatings, slave labor, starvations and unbelievable punishments. Until my dad passed, 4 yrs ago, every single night as long as I can remember he cried out in his sleep several times per hour "momma" "mom" "momma". I wish he was here to see that the things he experienced are coming to light and he wasn't alone. Maybe could've got some help for his demons and wouldn't have drank himself to death.

During the depression this was common. My father and uncle were orphaned when they were 12 and 13
years old. They were put in a " boys
farm " in SE Wisconsin. They would
never talk about their experiences there. There were documented
lawsuits brought about by the beatings and mistreatment of
young boys there. For me I found
it strange my father spoke about
this. My father was a kind man,
he passed in 1996. He died of a heart attack and my mother found him on the bedroom floor. She called me and I immediately went there.
When the county coroner arrived hours later I saw something I will
never forget and wish I hadn't seen.
While he was examining my father's
body he asked me if I knew how my father got all the scars on his back.
I realized that in my whole life I had never seen him with his shirt off.
He even wore a shirt while swimming, saying he didn't want
to get sunburned. At that moment
    I put 2 and 2 together. I never asked
my mother or uncle what they knew.
I don't want to remember my dad this way.

This is very similar to Lyman Ward Military Academy. I went there when I was 12. It was extremely traumatic. There were a few deaths while I was there, a planned shooting that was prevented before it happened (he brought a gun on campus). Due to legal issues after a slew of sexual assaults, tortures, and beatings they rebranded as the southern preparatory academy for boys. It was a living hell and I remember when a student committed suicide, a riot was caused when ghost peppers were lit on fire and kids were using fire extinguishers as smoke screens. I was taken out after my parents found brands on my arms when I was held down and branded by other students. It was a living experience of lord of the flies. My roomate was sexually assaulted multiple times by an older cadet and when it was reported they ignored it. It was a nightmare where we’d have to figure out ways to lock our doors so we wouldn’t get beaten at night by other students.

There was a place like this called the Bethyl School for Girls. My first cousin thought the sun rose and sat in that place and one day the guy that ran the place came to our church with about 20 girls. I watched him and listened to him speaking and I looked at the expressions on the girls faces and it took me every bit of 3 minutes to see that something wasn't right. I told my cousin that the guy running the place just doesn't seem right. He had the facial expressions, mannerisms and eyes of a violent man. My cousin vehemently defended him and I told her "Just wait and see what happens. I guarantee you there is severe abuse going on there." Of course she still denied it. Then a few months later the state removed all the girls to an "undisclosed" location for their safety and shut the place down because of---abuse. The next time I saw my cousin I told her "What did I tell you about that place?" She said "I never would have thought it was happening." I asked her "Have you ever REALLY looked at that guy? Have you seen his facial expressions and then looked at the teen girls blank, emotionless faces? It was so obvious that It took me all of a few minutes to see it." Chances are that most places like this are the exact same way. They use violence to try to "break" the students. And, if it looks like abuse is happening it probably is.

This reminded me of the Glenn Home, an institution in our town where children who were abused were sent since the 1920s. It wasn't until the 1960s that a minister heading the school was accused by the teens living there of sexual abuse. The home closed in the early 1980s when foster parenting became a more favorable option for these kids.

In 1984, at the age of 15, I was sent to the Anchor Home for Boys in Corpus Christi, Texas. This was another similar place where we would get beaten, paddled (I say paddled to bring up the fact that they knew how to use a paddle to the extreme; more than one lick to the rear would cause blood blisters.) There was a solitaire confinement that was barely a closet. When I returned home, I had lost 1/3 of my body weight, and not even my parents recognized me when I came into the airport. Others that I knew could not recognize me. I asked my parents if they knew what happened in that place, and they had no idea.

The nuns carried the old thick hard wood yard sticks to smack you in the head with. Our neighbor was fbi, he would take his fist and smack you hard on the top of the head! Bastard! This was all ok back then to mistreat children! Children were to be seen and not heard! If you complained about the abuse, you got it worse.

The comment about people who were abused become abusers is NOT TRUE! I came from a family of 9 children and we were all abused by our father. Beaten with tree branches and belts until blood ran down our legs and back. 2 of the girls were raped by him and one was constantly raped over and over for 8 years . I can HONESTLY say that NONE of us ever abused our children or anyone else's children. I firmly believe that people make a choice to be an abuser and it's a copout against being held responsible for their actions ! Really ticks me off when people say , Well he or she were abused as children and that's why they are abusers !!! We didn't want to hurt our children like we were hurt. We did just the opposite, we over spoiled our children !! ALL of my children are Christians as am I and they are not abusers .. the abuse in our family history stopped with our father ! And none of our 6 brothers had any daughter's. I know of many others who were abused as children and they are not abusers now. To make a comment like you did is reckless and has no merit !! And I am sure that all the people who were sexually abused in the Catholic churches would be offended by that comment too.!

How shocking that an institution of this size with such a tragic history should not even be known to me. My family has been in Manatee County for over 125 years, during the entire operations of this place, yet I've never heard of it. How do such atrocities stay under the radar of the general public being funded by our tax dollars? Thank you for bringing awareness of this black stain on our Florida history to my attention. @@aaronwalderslade Most US jurisdictions allow for charges/claims to be brought forward for a period of time *after* the "victim" turns 18. We don't allow them to be brought forward indefinitely, because that seems like a form of crazy, and opens the door wide to abuse people with false allegations that will never be capable of being proven or disproven. IIRC my state allows for a 2-3 year window after you turn 18, regardless of when the supposed incident took place. Problem is, a lot of people don't think to do something until they are MUCH older; like 30+.

I agree...there shouldn't be any statute of limitations for things like that! Who knows how long, if ever, it takes for someone to be able to work through that trauma enough to come forward about it? Every person and every situation is different! I don't care if it happened 70 years ago, if the offender is alive and it can be proven in court, the abusers should have it given right back to them! Fuck those sick bastards! God bless every single boy who had the unfortunate experience of walking through those doors. And curse every single person who looked the other way, or participated in the abuse. I hope they are burning in hell while getting tortured like they tortured those boys. I almost wish the souls of those boys who died were giving the torture, but no. They deserve to be at peace in heaven, away from any sadness.

I wonder, however, if not all the staff was quite so demonic. Notice how 'many reports/allegations of abuse & mistreatment surfaced'....who reported it? Not likely the students, as they were completely censored & threatened. People that left the facility? Perhaps some. But they would likely be ignored also, saying they were 'out of there, so why complain now? You're just bitter etc. etc.') I bet a FEW of the staff did try reporting it...at least as they could....but nothing happened. Very sad story.
It reminds me of being in a place for kids without parents, in former Yugoslavia.
We were mostly abused by grown-up boys and rarely by the people who worked there.
Abusings were severe in many cases. I listened to beatings that happens in the room above mine, and the screamings were terrifying. There were sexual things too, but not openly. Someone could force a kid to perform oral sex or something like that and a kid would probably later become Bi or homosexual.
The beaters were incredibly strong, about 18-19 guys who badly beat a 10-year kid for jumping on the bus, trying to take it (ironically, he became a bus driver as a grown-up, and he loved the buses).
I was once beaten with harsh slaps to admit something I didn't do it. When beaten too much, I admit and that guy let me go.
He pretend like he was the boss, the one who knows the best, so why not slap little kid around (I was about 8-9).
He was a very authoritative, intimidating, and strong guy.
One woman who worked there (she was short and therefore fired up soon after she came because of incompetence) watched all from close and didn't interfere at all. She asked me "Why do you admit?" and I said because that bully guy will continue to beat me. It wasn't the only case, but I'll remember the good times too.
This was far from the case in the video here, but we taste some of it.
    Parents should remember:
The worst nightmare in a child's life is without them.
Nobody will love that kid as parents.
I opened my heart to those people who were molested. You're not alone 💓

My parents would always say when we would get out of line, “y’all better act right, cause the bad boys go to the School for Boys on the other side of that pasture”..Looking back, we all didn’t know what really happened there but deep down it scared the hell out of me seeing them boys on the other side of the pasture. He told me about the beatings, the sexual abuse, the starving, the slave labour ect. If I'm being honest I never really believed everything he told me until now and I'm ashamed of myself. He escaped and hitched his way to ohio when he was 15 and ended up in an orphanage there until he was 18. Then he moved around for a few years and ended up immigrating to England where he changed his name. He was my neighbour for several years until he moved again.
He told of digging graves and wondering who they were for. Until he realised one day that it could be his own grave and that's when he decided to make a break for it. Luckily he got away. But the poor boys that didn't? Heartbreaking.

He said "he thought it would cause even MORE abuse to happen and he was already terrified". you'd be shocked to know that shit similar to this is still happening today. it's still being disguised as "help". i ended up at one of these schools in 2012. traumatic to say the least.

Taking a kid, who might have some rebellious tendencies (because they're kids for fuck's sake) and traumatize them is nothing short of deplorable, sickening and heartless. Why do people feel pain is the best motivator for "change"?! It only makes them worse in other ways. I've dealt with my own abuse as a child that affects me even today but, none of it was as bad as what these kids went through. I am truly sorry to every one of the kids who have gone through and are still going through things like what happened at Dozier at other facilities across the country. I know so many facilities like this fly under the radar and get away with their mistreatment and abuse.

My best friend just died. He told me about his childhood attending a Christian Brothers Catholic day school and orphanage in Irland. The beatings and sexual abuse were rife. He said at least he got to go home at night but the orphans didn't. The boys who did not comply would be sent to so-called Hospitals run by Nuns and you never see them again. One boy lay in front of a tram and died because it was preferable to living at the school. My friend suffered all his life and took to Alcohol at an early age. But he was one of the lucky ones and turned his life around. When he died he had been sober for 49 years. RIP Tommy F

I was in a religious boys home when I was a kid. I went in a clueless kid and came out more street smart than anyone back home. Never ever trust someone with your kid. Especially someone who's doing it in the name of god.

This reminds me so much of Canadian Residential Schools. The fact that people are capable of such atrocities, and disguising these facilities as "schools", is despicable.
