While its all true, it doesnt mention the single most important piece of the puzzle in the person of Józef Bem. He was a Pole and a general who led a Hungarian national uprising in mid-XIXth century, becoming the greatest national hero of the country, despite being a foreigner. Id say you also have to mention 1919; when Soviets invaded Poland, Hungary donated literally its entire ammo stock and some other stuff. We would not have won if it wasnt for them.

A podczas Powstania Warszawskiego, Niemcy stwierdzili, że nie nadają się do pacyfikowania Polaków i wybrali do brudnej roboty ukraińców. Węgrom kazano tworzyć krąg wokół Warszawy, by wyłapywali uciekających Powstańców, a ci zamiast wyłapywać, to pomagali i jeszcze dawali Powstańcom niemiecką broń. My rozumiemy się bez słów. 😀

I thought the same thing. How on earth is it possible that he completely missed the 19th century and the period of enslavement of both countries. And this is an exceptionally important period of mutual help in our history, basically unity and dedication to the cause of the other. And you're right, he could have said more about the war of 1920, which was so crucial for Poland (and Europe), because the Hungarians (but also the French) helped us a lot in terms of arms supplies. Many Hungarians also joined the Poles and fought against Russia.

@@alh6255Hungarians call Polish as Lengyel which reffers to them as Gál-Gaul-Gaelic people which Hungarians where and are and which just as Lengyel is a common Hungarian surname just as Orosz (O'Ros) reffering to Russians when it was also Gál-Gaul-Gaelic.
While modern Slav-Slöwen speakers have a traditions of attacking and killing people to whom they are related similarly to other groups ...it is strictly forbiden in Hungarian which is why Hungarians are not willing to engage in killing of Russians for they havent attacked us.
Hungarians and Polish fought on the opposite side in WW2 and again they didnt foought another but helped eachother so your argument is not accurate especially since liberal-leftist Polish goverment took over Poland the Polish nationalist are seeking refuge in Hungary where they will be protected.

@@MAKDÁVID-KRIŽ Why are you writing all these nonsense? Wasn't it better if you open encyclopedia and learn basic facts?
First (as for Hungarians were not killing Slavs): albeit you were not attacked by any country in WW2, "Hungarians permitted German troops to transit through their territory during the invasion of Yugoslavia, and Hungarian forces joined the military operations after the proclamation of the Independent State of Croatia. Parts of the former Yugoslavia were annexed to Hungary".
Finally (as for your stance of HUN not killing RUS): "Although Hungary did not initially participate in the German invasion of the Soviet Union, Hungary and the Soviet Union became belligerents on 27 June 1941. Over 500,000 soldiers served on the Eastern Front. All five of Hungary's field armies ultimately participated in the war against the Soviet Union; a significant contribution was made by the Hungarian Second Army. On 25 November 1941, Hungary was one of thirteen signatories to the renewed Anti-Comintern Pact. Hungarian troops, like their Axis counterparts, were involved in numerous actions against the Soviets. By the end of 1943, the Soviets had gained the upper hand and the Germans were retreating. The Hungarian Second Army was destroyed in fighting on the Voronezh Front, on the banks of the Don River."
To sum up, since WW1 in international policy you literally do not have any principles apart of sticking to anyone that will give you hope to revise borders and gain territories from your neighbours. If there is more than one such country, you sre sticking to whoever you think is strongest.

About Polish-Hungarian relations, we had a good king, who was Hungarian, coming from Transilvania - Stefan Bathory (elected to be a Polish king in 1576). Also earlier, in the XIVth century there were some important royal marriages between the dynasties, ruling in Poland and in Hungaria. For instance, Elizabeth of Poland, queen of Hungary (she lived 1305-1380). Later her son, Hungarian king Louis the Great (House of Anjou) was also the king of Poland in the years 1370-1382. But especially known is his daughter Jadwiga, crowned as the king of Poland (so a monarch, not only a queen) in 1384. She was Hungarian, but her grandmother was from a Polish dynasty. She died in 1399, but in 1386 she married Władysław Jagiełło (Jogaila), one of the best known Polish kings (he was Lithuanian) - who started the Jagiellonian Dynasty, ruling in Poland, Lithuania, as well as in other countries, for centuries. Jadwiga was also beatified by pope in 1986 and canonized as a saint in 1997. And later, we had also a common king, Polish and Hungarian - Władysław (Ladoslaus) of Varna, also from the Jagiellonian Dynasty. He was killed in the battle of Varna in 1444, at the age of 20, at the battlefield by Turkish, commanded by sultan Murad II. Also later, there were some connections, like Józef Bem, a Polish general, national hero of Poland and Hungary. And there's also a famous, traditional old Polish and Hungarian saying: "Polish and Hungarian brothers to be, good for saber and for glass" (so to fight and to party; the saying rhymes in Polish). It is said that this saying originated in 1772, after the collapse of first Polish uprising against Russia, so-called the Bar Confederation (Bar was a name of a town in Podolia, now Ukraine). It was inspired probably by the political asylum of the confederation's leaders in the territory then of Kingdom of Hungary.

One more thing - during Polish-Russian war of 1920 reborn Poland struggled ammo shortages as had no own industry yet. In the very critical moment Hungary sent to Poland a train of weapons and made a direct demand on neutral Romania (afraid of bolsheviks) to allow this transport through their territory. If you don't want to help to avoid war with Russia, you can still have one with us.
Much of bullets used in battle of Warsaw came indeed on that train

This video does not include the most important thing for Hungarians, i.e. the 1848 uprising. The army of the Hungarian insurgents was commanded by Polish general Józef Bem. Even though the uprising failed after a year and was defeated by the overwhelming Austrian-Russian forces, the Hungarians gained significant national autonomy. At the turn of 1867 and 1868, as a result of the earlier Hungarian uprising and to prevent a similar situation in the future, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was established on the principle of equal rights of Austria and Hungary, united by a real union under the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty.

Living ironicaly forget to mention several things, which basic because belonging to the most traumatic periods of our histories..
    1. During the 1848/49 hungarian revolution and independent fight, the hungarian army leaded by a polish general, Jozef Bem. His name became "sanctified" in Hungary.
    2. Both countries ruled by the other's monarchs: Poland ruled by the hungarian Monarch, István Báthory - with very succefully in the 16th century. Also in the 15th century Hungary ruled polish kings from the Jagello house.
    3. In 1920, when Poland recreated after 150 years long occupation, the Sovietunion attacked the weak and armless just created country. This was a crucual point in the polish reidentification, because Hungary has sent strategic amount of weapons to Poland (almost all of his own set), and with that Poland was able to defend itself, and stayed intact from the Russian occupational attempts (until 1939).
    4. In 1956 Hungary fought against the Sovietunion in a very bloody revolution. All the world helped - all the help come from the world was 50%. But the other 50 % was alone from Poland - with blood-donations to food, and all of this giant help with the fact, that Poland was very poor in those times...So in that time the countries changed blood too, so we can say we became real "blood brothers", when Poland helped us as much as the whole world...
In the present our political keaderships coming from different ideologies, sharing different views about the world and the current conflicts. , But on the level of the average people this difference hopefully not affecting our historically deep and unique "brotherhood".

  • @AnnaCsuzda

It isn't just that Hungary and Poland shared common enemies, but there were many instances in our history when Hungarian kings married Polish princesses and vice versa. There were also times when the two countries shared a king in a personal union, meaning that they had their own legislation and governing bodies, but under a single ruler. They even shared a common border for 800 years until the end of World War I where Hungary lost 2/3 of its original area to neighbouring countries.
During the many revolutions in both countries' histories, they helped each other out with ammunition, shelter, food supplies and even manpower. Just some examples which were missing from the video:
    - Poland helped Hungary during the Rákóczi's War of Indepence against Austria in 1703-1708,
    - Hungary helped Poland fight against the Russians in 1830,
    - A Polish General, Josef Bem joined the Hungarian army during the Revolution of 1848 and is regarded as a national hero in both countries.
    - The alliance which was mentioned in the video called the "Visegrád Four" between Hungary, Poland, Checz Republic and Slovakia got revived in the 1990s and is still active today.
Sadly the relationship between the two countries is getting worse due to the Hungarian government' policy regarding the Russian-Ukranian War as Poland strongly supports Ukraine while Hungary is trying to keep up a good relationship with Russia. But on the ground level where politics is not ruling everything, the two nations' people are still holding each other in high regard due to everything we've been together throughout history and hope that our governments don't destroy a deep friendship stemming from the Middle Ages.
Greetings to my Polish brothers and sisters and take care!

We should also add the fact that some polish and some hungarian monarchs were realated and sometimes were even wearing both crowns.
    - Ladislaus I (king of Hungary and Croatia) was son of Richeza of Poland - daughter of Mieszko II Lambert (king of Poland).
    - Elizabeth of Poland was a sister of Casimir III the Great (king of Poland) and daughter of Ladislaus I Elbow-high (king of Poland) married Charles I Robert (king of Hungary and Croatia). Their son Louis I the Great was both king of Hungary and Croatia and later also king of Poland and his daughters were crowned as kings of those two countries - Mary I of Anjou (king of Hungary and Croatia) and Hedwig I of Anjou (king of Poland and grand duchess of Lithuania).
    - Sigismund of Luxembourg (king of Hungary, Croatia, Germany and Bohemia, prince-elector of Brandenburg and Holy Roman Emperor) was great-grand son of Casimir III the Great (king of Poland), he was also a husband of Mary I of Anjou who also just like him had a blood of Piasts.
    - Ladislaus of Varna - king of Poland and Supreme Duke of Lithuania was also later coronated as king of Hungary and Croatia, his death was actually connected to the fact that he accepted hungarian crown.
    - Vladislaus II (king of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia) was son of Casimir IV Jagiellon (king of Poland and Supreme Duke of Lithuania) and nephew of Ladislaus III of Varna (king of Poland and Hungary and Supreme Duke of Lithuania).
    - John Zápolya (king of Hunagry) was son of Hedwig of Cieszyn (polish princess).
    - John Sigismund (king of Hunagry) married Isabella of Poland who was the oldest child of Sigismund the Old (King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania), sister of Sigismund Augustus (King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania but also the first ruler of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) and Anna I of Poland - who together with her husband Stephen Báthory were co-rullers of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and what is also important Stephen was also Prince of Transylvania and member of the Hungarian Báthory noble family.
    - Maximilian (King of Hungary, Croatia, Germany, Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor) was a son of Anna Jagellonica who was a daughter and a grand daughter of both Hungarian and Polish monarchs (honestly too much connections, it deserves it's own comment).
Those aren't even all the connections but those are the most important I think.

One of the first person to connect the history of Hungary and Poland was Princess Kinga, daughter of the King of Hungary - Bela IV. In 1239 she came to Poland, she was 5 years old. For political reasons (defending the borders against Tartar invasions), Princess Kinga was engaged to the Duke of Sandomierz, Bolesław Wstydliwy (son of Leszek Biały). When Kinga was 12 years old, she married Bolesław, it was a white marriage (no sex, no children), both were religious. Princess Kinga learned to read and write in Polish, imported orders, founded monasteries, managed the district under her control very well, supported her husband, also spent her dowry on rebuilding the damage after the Tatar invasions (e.g. Krakow), and treated the sick. Salt miners came to Poland from Hungary together with Kinga. Salt began to be mined (Bochnia, Wieliczka), which was a valuable and profitable raw material. There is a legend about Kinga's engagement ring and salt mining in Poland. After her husband's death, Kinga entered a monastery. In the 18th century, the Pope declared Blessed Kinga the patroness of Poland and Lithuania, salt miners, and she is also the patroness of the Tarnów diocese. Pope John Paul II canonized Kinga in 1999. In 2007, Saint Kinga was announced as the patron of Polish local government officials. There are many schools and streets named after Saint Kinga. Kinga is a Hungarian name, a diminutive form of the Old Germanic name Kunegunda. Kinga is popular in Hungary and south-eastern Poland. It means 'fighter of the family', 'from a brave family'.
    Regards from Poland 🙂

Serbs think so, but it's simpler than that. There was no conflict between the Hungarians and the Poles for 500 years, because we had no reason to attack each other. The mentality is similar. The two countries always helped each other because they were in a similar situation. The Polish left is trying to destroy this good relationship, but they are not succeeding.

This is only because many Poles are not educated in history enough to see, that since Trianon treaty Hungarians are pushing to change their borders. They want their pre WW1 territories from Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, ... Because of that they are hanging on with any emerging bandit state: nazi Germany, putin's Russia and so on. By doing this, they are strengthening enemy states that are huge threat to Polish security and independence. Nice gestures they made after Poland being attacked by their allies can not change consequences of their policy. Luckily Poles started to notice this after 2022.

So many centuries together and not a single war or betrayal. It's nice to have someone who will help if something bad happens in Poland. And I hope it will work the other way too. And regarding some comments, each country has the right to its own policy and no one has the right to say who to be friends with and who not to be friends with. Instead of applauding Hungary for guarding its borders, the European Union threatened and intimidated us. We have to take care of such a friend because there is no other like it in the entire universe. We should have a common border so that our love blossomed even more 😁😘

I love history so I know about the above mentioned and more reasons to have brotherly feelings towards poles. My experience on the other hand is also good. So whenever I meet a pole I'm glad. If they as people struggle I feel bad and I want to support them. This is what I feel natural since I know I exist.
When I read the small portion of comments below about 'it's not the case anymore', 'we are not friends', etc. that doesn't feel good, but I accept it, I understand it. I fear for Poland and the poles. I hope I'm wrong. However whenever you'll need help: my gate is open, and I'll still offer my helping hand.
As we say, "bajban ismerszik meg a jó barát". Which I could translate as "When you're in trouble, that's when you see who your really good friend is". Our ancestors learned that lesson for generations, and proved it's true for nations. It depends on us in the present if we pass this good tradition to the next generations to come. I will pass it, and I greet poles from Hungary.

Thanks, and also best wishes from Poland. And the reason of such comments is just that we don't like what Your authorities are doing currently with regard to attitude towards Russia. We just cannot understand this - knowing so well who Putin is and what Russia is and always was. And although we had some difficult historical relations with Ukrainians (the Volhynia and Eastern Galicia genocide on Polish civilians by Ukrainian nationalists in the years 1943-1945) - such pictures, as we can see now from Ukraine, we know very well from our own past, when the Soviets and the Red Army were killing our people. We know the pictures of mass graves in the forests of Russian victims, like in Ukraine now, earlier it was the Katyn Massacre in 1940 on Polish. However, with regard to the comments mentioned at the beginning, it's about politics and authorities - not of course about relations with individual Hungarian people.

BUT - it is interesting that Jadwiga was crowned as a king and not as a queen. She is buried in the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow in a beautiful white sarcophagus. As a Hungarian I still consider Poles as our closest historic friends, although Hungarians do not hate Russia as much as Polish people do. Hungarians also had some bad experiences with Russia but maybe less than our Polish friends. The way how we look at Ukraine is completely different. Ethnic Hugarians living in Western Ukraine have been deprived of their national rights similarly to ethnic Russians, that's why Hungarians relate differently to Ukraine and tend to show more understanding for Russia. This difference however should not and cannot overright 800-900 years of Polish-Hungarian brotherhood.

This is truly friendship and mutual understanding. When I'm in Hungary, I always feel great there and Hungarians say the same when they are in Poland. It's hard to describe, this huge, deep kindness and mutual understanding without words. And no matter what your political views are, a Pole always makes an exception for a Hungarian and vice versa. Polish-Hungarian friendship is "invented friendship". It is a concept developed by Oscar T. Ranger and Eric Hobsbawm. They established that people invent certain rites or rituals, become very attached to them and quickly recognize that they are eternal. A good example they cite is the British Monarch's New Year's speech delivered on the radio. Once upon a time, the radio was invented, the king spoke, and after a dozen or so years it was accepted as a permanent element of tradition. It is exactly the same with Polish-Hungarian friendship.
In the 19th century, when the identity of modern European nations was shaping, the Polish and Hungarian nations had a lot in common. First of all, they did not have independence, one of the important elements limiting independence was Vienna's cooperation with tsarist Russia. Both here and there the aspirations for sovereignty were suppressed, there was the Spring of Nations with the active participation of Poles, among others. Józef Bem, national uprisings - everything we know from history. This built a sense of community. Only if you look at history honestly, there are highlights and shadows. There were times when even the Polish and Hungarian crowns were shared, but there were times when Poles fought with Hungarians, for example during the Swedish Deluge. But when creating an invented tradition, one forgets what is bad and only brings out what is good. And that's when the saying "Pole, Hungarian, two nephews" was coined. It has its source in the nineteenth-century fate and misfortune of both nations. That was the beginning. Later, after the Second World War, a common history emerged: Soviet domination, the period of Stalinism, in 1956, there was a rebellion in Poznań and the October changes, and in Hungary there was an uprising.
Today, Polish-Hungarian relations are in a great crisis at the state level, but at the human level they are still very cordial and friendly.

Near to the city Mohács (where im from) there is an ongoing archaeological site where people were murdered and pushed into mass graves, and this archaeological site exploration started in 1960. At least 4 mass graves has been found so far with 2000+ skeletons (mainly young male, few 10-12 year old children who probably served as a steward) and still there are several untouched sites. Since 1783 we have once a year the so called Busójárás (check it out :) ) tradition and the Busó`s using 2 cannons (not with real cannon balls but simple rugs xD ) - one was used in the Battle of Mohács in 1526, and the other in 1687 at Nagyharsány against the ottomans, both cannon was found in the riverbed of Danube.

From then on the mutual intermarriages between the royal houses (and personal unions) were quiet common until the Habsburgs. But I dont think we had to fought each other directly in the last 500 years even once! Or more likely the armies refused to do it! Ehhm... for me, the channel *"Living Ironically" is full of hypocrisy* and does not reflect the Polish point of view at all, even if the film directly concerns Poland, *the author is unable to look at the matter from the Polish perspective*, although I understand what the Hungarians went through, after the first war, after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, they were cut down from ⅔ of their territory and what was left of Hungary looked and looks like a victim of gang r**e*, so it's no wonder that the Hungarians wanted revenge to get back at their neighbors, I understand all this, but why can't this channel understand that we also went through the same thing, we also want to regain the eastern borderlands, the taken lands, Zaolzie, Königsberg, and other lost territories, but somehow we don't cry about it and we don't pour out this grief anyone, not to mention the fact that the author of the film insulted all Poles by calling us *homosexuals* just because Polish-Hungarian friendship lasts so long... (_which is not entirely true._) ...then we need some * sexual thread...*, and apart from the general attitude of Poles towards *homosexuality*, although I don't know how it is in Hungary, in Poland there is such a higher culture that *you don't talk about sex in front of friends and strangers* because it's a topic reserved for spouses, and *a mixture of geopolitics and sex* is a *total perversion* for Poles, I'm not interested in what's happening in the Balkans or Romania, and almost the entire channel is full of it, even there are few films about Hungary itself, and You can count the number of films with at least a slight reference to Poland on the fingers of one hand...

Oh and they were neighbours, back then Slovakia was not a country. ( I am older than Slovakia but that joke is too young.)

This video is poorly made, no 19th century, no WWI, a lot of names aren't mentioned. You should watch something more historical Pol 😉
