I work for a company that helps people come off of medications. We have known for more than ten years that a Benzo withdrawal was comparable or even worse than a heroin withdrawal. If you quit cold turkey you may go into shock and cardiac arrest. One of the saddest client experiences was when a mother and her 8 year old came to us. His school counsellor mentioned that he was having problems with his attention and he seemed anxious in class. The boy was prescribed 3 different medications and two, TWO were benzos. Turns out that he wasn't sleeping well because he was being bullied by some older boys and he was fearful of recess and lunch because that's where they would corner him and that's all he could think about. This child had to go through the withdrawals that an adult should never have to experience, because some school counsellor thought that he needed drugs instead of looking for the root cause of the anxiety in the first place. What a world.

I was on Xanax and Clonazepam for 14 years. I was also addicted to oxycodone for 10 years. The benzos were hands down the worst to get off of. I've been off of opiates since June 22, 2018 and benzos since January 2017. While getting off of benzos I had multiple seizures and really thought I was going to die. When getting off of opiates I felt like I was going to die but knew I just had to ride it out. Thank you God for helping me through it all!

To those who don't know, he developed a physical addiction to the benzodiazepines that he was prescribed by his doctor for anxiety. It tragically happens to millions of people around the world all the time. Now cynical people with an axe to grind say he's a junkie because he's in recovery, but the fact that he's taking control of his situation is, in my opinion, a demonstration that he is following his own advice. A "clean room" is a process, not an event.

Genuine question really need help not doctor hasn't been there help real help. So a car mounted a pavement and broke 3 ribs fractured femur and bleed on brain from unconscious. Anyway I live alone, there's a list of severity of breaks hairline, compound avlusion, spiral there's was about ten but because of the loss of consciousness I'm having memory issues. Anyway, mine was the worst almost snapped through. Because this is a pseudonym I'll be honest. I was so frightened of moving in the night it snapping piercing my lung and me dying in my own blood because I have no partner. So I've been battering them for a month and valour. Weirdly for what are proposed to be muscle relaxants a weird side effect was the removal of my abject fear (crying, I've only ever cried when my dog died but I was genuinely so scared I couldn't control my emotion). My question is "how long does it take to form a proper dependency on them?" I've completely stopped now. So scared I hired an escort to stay over next day it was "this is like a holiday for me, I have my own room with projector etc and you want nothing but my company, I'll half the price I'm even gonna have a deep clean for you". I'm thinking great. Anyway, she was just looking what I had and where, I woke up went into her room with a coffee she's not their but around £4000 of assets are stolen. She robbed me. I'm so low I never wanna take them again but please advise me what I'm in for. Please. Genuine request? 🙏

So, benzodiazepines is an anti-anxiety drug? Is it possible that in 2017 when I gradually came down with CHF and hadn't slept in weeks because of huge anxiety that I might suffocate if I didn't stay propped up, and my nurse had mercy on me & gave me 1 tablet of something for anxiety that made me feel so wonderful I finally slept right through the night, and then, the next day, when I asked him what it was, so I'd know something that worked in case I ever experienced anxiety like that again, he refused to tell me what the medication was, even when I pleaded, just so I'd know what worked in that case. What do you think may have been the reason he refused to tell me the name of the medication? That it was perhaps something more addictive than benzodiazepine?

FINALLY, People are talking about how NASTY and EVIL Benzodiazepines are. I fell in love with those at a young age due to how much they helped with my anxiety, depression and stress. These things seemed like a life saver at the time. But they quickly stop working and then leave you struggling for YEARS to get off of them. Now I am trying to maintain sobriety from benzos..
I am finally 6 months sober and I am seeing a new way to live life. Still struggling with severe rebound anxiety but it is getting better day by day. It’s just one day at a time, you can get sober! Thanks Jordan Peterson for talking about this.

I was convinced that my psychiatrist was working for the devil himself and she was poisoning me. I can't even describe the feeling, like wanting to jump out of your own skin; I don't understand how people use that recreationally. I was also prescribed Ambien and was shown a video of myself acting erratic and crazy in the homeless shelter. I couldn't believe my eyes. I did not remember ever doing what I was doing on video. I even considered that the video may be doctored but the security officers were showing me the actual stored video directly from the servers. The devil's drugs they are. Well of course you experienced a severe withdrawal syndrome, but this is not due to benzodiazepine , but due to your reckless decision-making. You built a 40+ year long dependence. Here, when I speak of dependence, I primarily mean in a psychological sense. You could not function properly without your medication, and it was your primary support system. Over time, of course, due to the nature of the human organism, this extended into the biological realm and your body adapted to this new neurochemical environment you-ve created. This also has nothing to do with benzos or any other medication : biological adaptation happens all the time at all levels of the human being (it-s an evolutionary mechanism for survival). For whatever reason, you decided to quit this medication, which has sustained you for the past 40 years. Then, just pay close attention to what you wrote in your comment: "I started a looong, slow, home detox, thought I was out of the woods until 2 weeks after quitting completely." So you attempted to cure a 40 year dependence with a HOME DETOX (this stinks of pseudoscientific garbage) , decided to quit essentially cold turkey (relative to the length of your dependence), and now think that what happened afterwards with you is a consequence of taking benzos? This kind of thinking is so flawed and dangerous: it reminds me of Germany thinking it can quit its dependence on Russian energy (which it sustained for decades) overnight, just because someone said so. You/ve made a huge mistake and ofc its easier to blame the medicine than to take personal accountability. These are my thoughts on this issue.

@@stanislavknezevic6684 awfully detailed response for someone who isn’t considering that this person developed a chemical dependence while their brain was literally still developing. You also aren’t looking at this person’s psychology or personal circumstance. How can you expect a developing child to know better than to abstain from a very powerful mind altering substance given to them at the hands of their own caregiver? You’re disregarding way too many factors in your argument for it to be even close to the full picture. What did you hope to accomplish by telling this person about what you perceive as solely their own mistake? Besides, they went through hell and came out the other end five years ago- no small feat. Many people don’t make it through what this person is describing. I didn’t take the medication for that many years but I did take it for 10 and the psychotic symptoms are very real. Consider the why this person was taking that medicine in the first place. Not everyone takes them, no? Something deeper is always going on with that individual that they need to literally turn the volume down on every part of their life to be able to tolerate it.

My dad was prescribed benzos for YEARS after having panic attacks. When he retired he decided he no longer needed the medication. He told his Dr he was just going to quit taking them. Dr. said "you can't. It could kill you". It took years for him to get normal. The weaning process was terrible. I watched a fit, alcohol & tobacco free man in his late 50s become a shell of his former self. My dad is 6'2" & normally around 210-20 lbs. During the prolonged weaning & withdrawal stages he dipped as low as 165lbs. He didn't sleep properly for years. He said even his hair hurt. Seriously, I bet it was over 2 if not closer to 3 years of withdrawal. Worst part was my dad took them as prescribed & nearly everywhere he went for help he was treated as an addict. "How long have you been abusing your medication?".
It was a shitty process & horrible to watch. I'm so glad he made it through it. Benzos are seriously bad stuff.

      Thank you for sharing.
I woke up after a decade of alcohol abuse, and after years battling with any semblance of sobriety, years of destroyed relationships, health and legal issues, I couldn’t do it anymore. I didn’t even recognize myself anymore. I shaved my head and said it was over. (For the trillionth time).
I just knew there wasn’t anymore “breaks” from it. I was down so bad, I knew I couldn’t survive if I ever went back. Like looking out over the ocean from the banister of a boat out at sea. One slip and you’re gone.
It took me years of education, outpatient, AA and relationships with people who were addicted, to overcome this codependency that was ultimately masking my problems. When it comes up, i openly admit that I’m an alcoholic, it is not a unique struggle, as well as any addiction.
I never could picture a happy life without alcohol. But with it approaching 2 years on April 21st, I have had the best year and a half of my life. I’m sharing this because I want this peace for everyone battling with their addictions. So much time is burned up in alcohol and drug abuse. You finally have time to address your issues piece by piece, and finally invest in yourself. So grateful for the life I have today, and that all came from my past self, taking it day by day, for my future self.
You can do it! Just one more time.

Benzodiazepines, a devil pill, one that nearly took my life. The Dr’s kept pushing this as treatment as they thought my medical issues where all in my head. When in reality I had a rare neuromuscular disease along with ovarian tumors. By the time I had proper diagnosis my body was dependent on alprazolam. I was crawling on the floor in my kitchen one morning in a psychosis state from tolerance withdrawal. I had no idea what was going on, it hit me out of nowhere. I then found out what tolerance was and I was going in and out of withdrawal ON the benzo. My Dr was no help and wanted to up my dose and I knew if I didnt get off I would die. I researched online and found someone who lead me to the harms of the medication and proper tapering off and I mean strict tapering method and is approached by small percentage reductions to help the body adjust. It was torturous hell, like nothing remotely comes close to it, you wish you would die. The symptoms of withdrawal are on a level almost intolerable to what any human should have to endure and it takes sometimes years to recover to a point of living a life with any quality. There are thousands and thousands of people that are going through this, with little to no help and have to stumble upon help from ones that have been through it. Informed consent needs to be given to EVERYONE that is prescribed this and should never be given more then 2 weeks.

I found this video at the perfect time. My partner was addicted to benzos i guess worst than i even expected. He told me he stopped but now i see it’s not that easy. We went on vacation and not having any he went into withdrawal and psychosis. The craziest scariest thing i even witnessed in my life. The crazy outburst, the paranoia, the delusions, no sleep, he thought people were going to “k!ll him”, he was seeing things not there, he literally called the cops on himself on vacation! We were in the hospital on an island, he kept saying his stomach hurts which now i see is a symptom. I just thought maybe he took drugs and was dealing with paranoia and it will go away. It didn’t he was shaking, no appetite and the list goes on. I was so scared and couldn’t want to get back home! The plane ride was the worse! He thought everyone on the plane was after him, he kept telling me he had a “b0mb” on his foot, a lady was taking out an AirPod and he kept telling me “she’s shotting up! Look at her taking out the needle!”. I was so confused and over it. Now seeing how bad it can be i have sympathy. He was checked into the hospital ICU that’s how bad it was when they explained what the withdrawal symptoms can do. i say all this to say that sometimes we can make things about us because the whole time i argued with him for ruining MY trip, telling him i can’t wait to go home and leave him. And while yes, i do feel this way, i now understood what’s happening and it breaks my heart knowing what he was going thru. He didn’t mean to do these things or “ruin” the trip. I never knew benzos were this bad and i wish it was educated more so people would know the harm or signs to spot.

It’s the most horrendous thing I’ve ever experienced by a mile and it’s taken me years and years of battling. I’m suicidal every second of every day, it’s terrifying. Everyone please be careful since they are prescribed like candy with no warnings. They are not meant for long term use but these doctors are putting profit before patients and just keep people on it. Damn I’m sorry man, I’ve never been dependent on benzos but I did become dependent on phenibut which is quite similar in many aspects. I had to taper off over a whole year and it was absolute hell. I’m still not “clean” from it as I take a very very low dose of gabapentin.
I’ve also kicked opiates quite a few times and while that is miserable, it’s not nearly as scary or as hard as phenibut. Good luck.

Being a person who has suffered first hand from PTSD and anxiety. I can totally relate to Jordan not being able to sleep. When you are going through an anxiety attack, you may wake up many times throughout the night in a puddle of sweat. Or you simply just can't sleep. Because your mind is racing. At first you totally don't understand what's going on with you. There were times I had to just go for a drive. Whether it was during the day, or the middle of the night. Because it helped ease my mind. Once you start to manage it better, it gets easier. But sometimes you're overwhelmed to the point to where you just aren't thinking clearly and you try to look for an escape. That escape could be drinking, or drugs. Or it could be what I used to do and go to various parks to hike, going to a school track to run, or simply going for a drive to try to calm down. Hats off to those who suffered the same way. I understand completely how you feel. At times you just want to live like it's your last day on earth. Because you feel so awful and miserable and like it could really be your last day on earth. Just keep moving forward, even if it's a crawl. When you look back, you'll be proud about how far you have came and what you overcame while having to suffer so much and it not defeating you. I'll take physical pain over mental pain any day. Those who know what I'm talking about would more than likely tell you the same.

What's sad is that with benzos most people get hooked without even knowing it. If you take opiates or heroin recreationnaly you will get addicted but you know you caused it to yourself, it was somewhat of a choice, whereas with benzos doctors prescribe them like candies to millions of people without telling them once that it's a substance with one of the worst withdrawals you can imagine, and people end up getting horribly addicted to something they thought was going to help them because they trust their doctor

I've never gotten into them but I have been addicted to opiates. They made me energized and I could think clearly on them so when it came to getting off of them, it was hard but easy. Oh and also I didn't die going cold turkey (DONT RECOMMEND IT)
My girlfriend had a thyroid issue that cranked her bodies metabolism way up. They scheduled radioactive therapy so that her thyroid would go back to normal and regulate her body normally. In the 3-month window waiting for the procedure they prescribed her benzos to slow her down. A woman with the strongest mind of any human being I've ever met was becoming addicted. The funny thing is she came to me and said something. She could feel herself slipping down a hole she KNEW she could never climb out of. I knew it was a cry for help. I pulled that pill bottle back from her and slowly weaned her off with what she had. The dose she was prescribed was turning her into a zombie. After doing research and learning that alcohol and benzos are typically the only things that kill people on withdrawals, I was scared s***less.

In my teens, I remember being in an inhouse rehab that I stayed in for a week. I had my own room, but on both sides of the room I shared walls with one guy in his 30's coming off of benzos on one end and the other an older gentleman coming off opiods. 4 out of 7 nights I stayed awake, listening to what I can only describe as pure agony, screaming, crying, begging, praying, wishing for death etc, until, eventually, they'd either pass out or just go shower and go on about the day as if nothing happened. I pray they found that strength, the younger guy was a great guitarist and the older guy was genuinely kind and taught me some things. Anyone who knows the struggle my heart is with you. Tomorrow's always a new day.

The exact same thing happened to me Jordan. I was working 70 hours a week post separation from my wife and family. I was working so much to cover for my boss who had recently lost his wife and two years later his son to lymphoma. I did this for 5 years and at the end of it I landed in the hospital with 7% ejection fraction and on dialysis for kidney failure. Sleep and rest are no joke.

I was a drug addict all my life, starting from when I was very young when my mother used to drug me up to shut me up. But this is really fantastic that someone Of such intellect is so open about his drug addiction and recovery experience. It’s great because it lets all of us know that even people who you would think are above such problems can easily fall victim to it, I think it is important for everyone to keep that in mind and may inspire them to embark on the journey of recovery themselves. I think people often times think something is wrong with them and that is not a good mindset, people like Jordan Peterson remind us that Anyone can fall victim to this sort of personal failing.

I'm 27 been smoking for 12 years drinking for 10 and I was introduced to Opioids about 3 years ago, recently I made the bad decision of mixing the whole three and abusing the shit out of these substances on one occasion, I had a seizure as a result of the overdose, I felt like I've died for several minutes a then came back to life, It was a wake-up call for me to quit being in that loophole. I stopped cold turkey and it was the hardest thing I've done in my life, everyone talks about the emotional and mental difficulty of the withdrawals but the physical part is rarely addressed, fever, nausea, headache, dizziness, vertigo, shortness of breath, heartache and elevated heart palpitation rate I swear for about a week it felt like my brain was failing to control parts of my body, mainly hands and legs I literally had difficulty walking, I couldn't perform my job because I couldn't type on the computer also. I've had a few relapses but it only made the recovering more difficult so I'm 3 months clean now. I think I've said too much but anyway, this is my story that nobody actually knows about but me, THE FIGHT CONTINUES BUT VICTORY IS CERTAIN.

Even if you think you will be careful I would still bet money you OD. You are still young. One of the benefits of hard drugs. You either get sick of them super fast or die. You have a great chance of living a happier life and you're past the half way point of going the day with out a craving. Erase those numbers if you're holding them. Anyway, she was just looking what I had and where, I woke up went into her room with a coffee she's not their bur around £4000 of assets are stolen. She robbed me. If you haven’t had to come off of Xanax, it’s really hard to put into perspective how painful it is. I started using Xanax and Vicodin around the age of 20 and it was the first time in my life I felt like I could take a deep breath. It was the first time I was happy with who I was but I didn’t realize I was only hurting myself. I was the definition of functioning addict. I do high voltage electrical work and I had days i took on the upward end of 5-7 bars a day and I would run laps around other people at work. And because I would preform better at work I didn’t see an issue with it. I never took them to get fucked up. I just wanted to feel normal without anybody knowing what I was up to.. It was my little secret. But once that script ran out I went into full on withdrawals and had 3 seizures over the course of 1.5 years. One time I fell off an 8 foot ladder onto my head. I’m 23 now and clean off the Xanax. But because of those decisions I made I lost the one girl who meant the most to me because the drugs made me blind to what was important. Wish I could take it all back. One day at a time 🤘🏼

Yes it took a long time, yes I’ve heard I’m just an addict from people who don’t understand. I think because I went so slow, I really didn’t have a hard time when I made the final jump, made the time worth it. When I found out JP had been on klonopin my heart sank. It’s a very strong benzo and can make people really sick while on them, let alone the terror of getting off. I am so happy this man made it through. I was prescribed a Benzodiazepine when I was a teenager. After taking it for years as prescribed I started having random health issues. I didn’t think the medication was the cause until I tried to stop taking it. It was pure hell getting off it. I slowly tapered off over many months. I am feeling better than I was but I still have issues at a year off of it.

I can concur. Quitting Xanax to,quickly was hell on earth for over a year. I was only on a small dose and I experienced paradoxical reaction.and my attempt at quitting was worse than death. I,actually considered ending it all. The Ashton manual saved me. I had to crossover to Valium and did a two year taper. Just wanted to say i am now well and healed so,there is hope

I’ve been completely off benzos since September of 2020. If you don’t get up and do something with yourself, everything can become too dull to stand. Give your best at work, exercise to whatever level you can. I do Jiu Jitsu 5-6x a week and it helps tremendously.

After watching Dr. Peterson's lectures, I had respect for him. That respect just skyrocketed because I never knew he personally had an addiction. Research is one thing, experience is another ball game. Kudos Dr. Peterson.

@Ryan Daniel physical dependence does not equal addiction to the medical community but I tend to agree with you. Dr. Peterson seems to make a clear distinction here though and talks about the physical dependence without ever mentioning addiction. I think this was an amazing opportunity to give first hand experience on what addiction is like, especially addictions that start with prescriptions. He does not admit to be an addict and hasn't categorized his situation as an addiction. I don't think that helps people like me, an addict

    • @SmokeIfYouGotEm
      @SmokeIfYouGotEm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@zombiechacha6076 I am an addict as well. And agreed, physical addiction is weird through the medical community. Where it stems from, is treatment better than rehab? Is there a choice? Is it genetic or is there a predisposition?
I think he knows that outright saying, "I'm an addict" can have detrimental effects on his career and theories and things of the sort. But he does make it clear, there was a problem, and sometimes you gotta fight like hell to work through that problem.
Good luck to you. Don't wanna throw a bunch of cliche "works if ya work it" at you. But I hope you have the tools to fight like hell.

@Ryan Daniel thank you, and I agree that him talking about his experience with addiction would hurt his career. That's why it is so disappointing, he has the ability to help people who desperately need it but does not seem to be willing to possibly tarnish his image to do so. I still agree with many of his ideas, but I can not help but think this is a cowardly way of self preservation.

Dude, I took Xanax and Klonopin for close to two years in my mid 20's. I weened myself down to .25 mg a day, and then stopped. No joke, it felt like that uneasy feeling during an LSD trip for like two months. So scary. I'm about to become licensed as a substance use counselor. My uncle is on a small dose of benzos, and then he cuts that dose in half. He is incredibly dependant on them so that shows how strong they are. The sad thing is, he needs anti depressants, not benzos. I've tried talking to him about it but he has so much trust in his doctor. My sister went from benzos to h3roin and eventually succumbed to her addiction. I wish doctors weren't so quick to prescribe that stuff 5/20 years ago because e long term effects are sad.

In my mid 20's I had panic attacks. I started taking my girlfriends Ativan prescription to help. The sole reason why she continued the prescription was for me. 1mg 3-4 times a day for like 3 years. I had to take it to feel normal. When we broke up, she took the prescription with her and I had to quit cold turkey. I had no idea of the hell that would follow as I suddenly had to recover. I had no idea that there would be withdrawal symptoms. The sadness of the breakup compounded with nasty withdrawal symptoms. I was taking classes for my job at the time and more than once had to leave the class because I was pouring sweat and couldn't focus. I was sick and didn't know why.

Fentanyl coupled with klonopin and ambien withdrawal made me want to blow my head off. Scary battle that I feel like I’m finally getting some control of after 18 years of use. Clean for a year and sleep, muscle spasms and frequent panic attacks are getting better. The community and fellowship I desperately needed, I found in AA and also my baby boy saved my life. So glad there is someone like Joe to provide a platform and give voice to these problems so many folks are dealing with and making people aware that drug use isn’t a moral issue.
