I remember in middle school I didn't talk to anyone much. I worked up the courage to give the girl I thought was the most beautiful I'd ever seen an expensive necklace I saved for weeks to get picking up hay bales. I told her I thought she was a cool person and she was really pretty, then walked off awkwardly. Ill never forget watching her laugh with her friends and throw it in the trash as they left the cafeteria. That kinda sucked, but oh well 🤙 You never know unless you try and thats a bigger regret.
This song is about a time when the lead singer, Thom Yorke was at university. He was really infatuated with this girl in his class. He never had the courage to approach her and ask her out so he took a dark turn. He ended up stalking her through the uni campus. Even showing up at parties he knew she was there. He realises how much of a “creep” he was and he never thought that this beautiful woman would ever consider being seen with him. Anyway, he wrote a song about this dark history of him and this girl who was unobtainable to a guy like him. Years later, “Creep” became a huge hit and defined a generation of teenagers. Me one of them. At a concert Radiohead was playing at, this girl turned up to watch him play. He was incredibly embarrassed as it was well known by then that this song was about her. But because he was insanely famous now, this girl wanted to be seen with him and even asked him to date her. Thom Yorke politely declined her advances and never saw her again. He personally hates this song which is ironic because it was this song that put Radiohead into the stratosphere of fame and fortune. After so many years of playing this song at concerts all over the world, I think it was in the early 2000’s he refused to play this song again. I think it was in 2019 he decided to play this song for the first time in over 15 years and I think they haven’t played it since.
Two songs have made me pull over to the side of the road on first listen, this was one of them. I was twenty-one, running a landscaping crew over the summer, working in southern Ohio. I pulled my bosses '73 Chevy pick-up (straight six, three on the tree) and trailer full of mowers off onto a dirt patch and just sat there... listening.
I'm a brit, and this came out when I was at high school. It's very difficult to overestimate how big this track was and what a difference it made to so many people. Radiohead just went from strength to strength after this. Also for your sad playlist from Radiohead, Exit Music (for a film) and The Pyramid Song. I don't think anyone sings sad songs like Thom.
It's one of his early songs which talks about him not feeling good enough because of the way he looks. His insecurities as a child surrounding his lazy eye and that he doesn't feel like he belongs . It's a heartbreaking song and his live versions are amazing as you see that emotion play out.
Kind of but it's that people think he's a creep a weirdo and it makes him feel like he does not belong. He says "I'm a creep" with resentment at being seen like this hence the change in tone in that part of the song.
I think he expresses what many young people (particularly teenagers) think - from a boy's perspective - he's in love with a girl who is "special" etc and he is so lacking in self esteem that he thinks he can never have her, because he's just a creep, a weirdo... he feels not good enough and out of place, awkward. This song struck a chord with young people at the time, because being a teenager is full of this kind of self doubt and angst - the song expresses the worrying and depressing thoughts that many teenage boys go through. And teenage girls too.
@@MelanieMaguire hahaha unfortunately I can relate 🙃 I always figured once I was "grown" it would subside and I would magically have found my place... I am 29 and nope, guess my quirks and feeling awkward often is just part of being in the world for me
I love your videos because you appreciate the lyrics and you try to understand the story of the song. So many people don't learn the lyrics. To me the vocals and the story are the best part.
This song resonates with so many of us because at one time or another in our lives we have all felt we were invisible or disconnected from everyone around us. It hurts to feel as if you don't belong anywhere.
Radiohead are phenomenal. Their sound evolved from album to album. They are one of the most influential bands of the oast 40 years. Choose songs from each album. Thom Yorke's voice is amazing on it's own. They're brilliant.
Hello out there, to all my fellow CREEPS & WEIRDOS out there, we make the world a more interesting place to live!!! Bands like CREEP, take you on an emotional journey, so you feel the music, & that's what makes them exceptional, & seriously successful! 😎 Great reaction 😎
3:45 Completely agree, the desire for companionship is one of the deepest feelings we can experience...one big thing about Radiohead's lead singer, Thom Yorke, is that he has had strabismus from childhood (aka lazy eye, though his isn't as bad as Colin Hay's from another excellent band, Men at Work)...so he was very apprehensive about talking to women for fear of rejection...and supposedly that is where this song comes from, if you notice, he keeps his eyes mostly closed in this video so as not to accentuate his issue...to where you would never know it unless you saw him in person...we all cope in different ways...
lovely comment, I had forgotten the fact about his eye, thank you for pointing that out as it does give more meaning to keeping his eyes closed for this song. thanks
Bruhhhhh i just found your channel thru Kells (MGK) and wowwww my G.... i am blown away and forever subbed. Youre so accepting of EVERYTHING. Imagine if the remainder of the world was like you. Damn dawg. Keep doing amazing stuff like this please. You are more than appreciated 🙏👏🏽🤝
I just discovered your reaction channel tonight @Shon. Gotta day I love your enthusiasm and there's just a natural quality to you that no all 'tubers have. I'll keep watching!
Nobody will ever top Radiohead's original version - it's just not possible. I've heard lots of good covers, but nothing comes near to Thom Yorke's pure raw emotional projection. Not only is the music beautiful, but those lyrics, combined with Thom's voice of Radiohead's *MASTERPIECE* ......And that's why this song is covered so much! It has been in my top 5 since it was released and it's never left it - I doubt it ever will. PLEASE listen to 'Street Spirit' (Fade Away) by Radiohead.....haunting is an understatement 🖤.
I love Radiohead! This song is so cool. It would be great if you could react to a live concert version Jools Holland live of Paranoid Android, as well as a live session of Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out) they did live in Japan from this channel rrn3000 also the Basement sessions of In Rainbows, the song "Weird Fishes" is so amazing! They are so gifted musically. If you follow their music from the start, you can see how gifted they each are and that creatively together, there is no other band like them. Check out Thom and Jonny's side band called "The Smile". They are amazing!!
I love this song so much. What really gets me is that The Hollies sued them because it sounds like The Air that I Breathe and I don't hear it, but that Ed Sheeran debacle...as if.
recently sub'd, I've really enjoyed your reactions and how you actually try to listen to the lyrics. You find the meaning or even just the feeling the song gives you. So many reactors just bob along to the beat and scream how great without even trying to understand. I appreciate ya, this was a lovely reaction to a grinding, sad song. Have you checked out any R.E.M. yet? I think it would be a great reaction to do Everybody Hurts and Losing My Religion (the official video version). Have a wonderful day!
It's a confidence thing, and sometimes even the coolest people are awestruck and dumbfounded when they run into a type of love that captivates them so much, they feel lesser, like an infatuated creep, out of their league, etc. Imposter syndrome, but on a romance level. This song skyrocketed the group though, "Exit For a Film" is my favorite of theirs, I believe it was in the end credits of Romeo & Juliet years ago.
Good vibes man 🤙 "I don't belong here" refers to him feeling like shes so much better than him that if he was with her it wouldn't feel right to him. I believe he did have a crush and either he was denied in a heartbreaking way or more likely he never told them how he felt because of his self-confidence...or lack thereof.
I love your reactions they're always fun to watch. The most fantastic Rock and roll ballad to me personally is "Edie (Ciao baby) by the British band The Cult.

You ever been crushing on someone HARD, but from afar? That's what this is. He's creepin' on this person and he's aware of what he's doing, and he's like, "What the hell am I doing? I need to stop (I don't belong here.).
I read somewhere that most people want to be with someone that they think is a little above them, maybe just slightly out of their league. What about when you are convinced the person is completely out of your league. That goes to all sorts of weird places; lots of what ifs. What if they get tired of me? What if they find someone better? Why are they with me? Should I believe they care about me? It's sort of dark because this is where a lot of domestic violence comes from. He says I want to have control and he's doing that by figuring out what will please her, another person might take control quite differently.
Think of the nerd/weird kid (boy) in High School who would love to date the 'Popular Girl', so he goes up at a dance and she is like, "OMG, Weirdo, you are such a creep, what are you even doing here, you don't belong here". I am sure many guys have encountered this, and many girls (now grown) feel bad for it.
He feels unworthy of their love. Even if they offered themselves up on a platter he wouldn’t be able to have a healthy relationship because his self-worth is so insanely low that he will, by default, expect to lose the one thing he wants and has. Better to have never lose it than to have it and know what it’s like to not have it.
The singer (Thom Yorke) would go on to describe this song as "a joke that nobody got," I've thought a lot about that, but I'm still not 100% sure what he meant. Its basically one of about 4 songs that sums up the entire generation that heard it for the first time. 💯
He feels creepy bc he's watching and admiring her from afar and is totally insecure about himself
