I was excited about the SNACCCKS on your counter, but then finding out you have them for family DND night is so freaking wholesome. I'm gonna snack on some chips to celebrate.
Thank you for sharing this. You make me want to grow lots of vegetables this summer just for dyeing fibre! 😀 Can’t wait to see what you choose to dye next.
I am glad that TH-cam recommanded your channel, this is a great video, I was thinking maybe befor dying the skeins, we could put the herbs in a cheese cloth or any thin fabric you have around before putting them to simmer, what are your thoughts?
First of all , very nice work. Nice colours and good explanation. Can you dry the carrot tops for later use? I need to dye some square meters of linen, so I need a lot of carrot tops. As this would be my first dyeing project is it similar to your wool project or do I need some more preparation (sourcing).. how much carrot tops would you use for 400 grams of linen. Thx in advance and keep up the good work.
Thank you! I think that the carrots tops work best fresh. I haven't dyed linen before, but it is a plant fiber, so the fiber will need a different preparation (mordanting) process than wool. It will also likely need a higher ratio of plant material to fiber if you wanted a saturated green. Personally, I would want a 2:1 ratio of carrot tops to linen. But that is a lot of carrot tops! If possible try to dye a smaller sample as a test. Good luck!
Have you ever tried dyeing with mowed grass ? Thank you for this very nice video! And when you say "iron" what the chemical composition or scientific name, so I can find the exact product in my country, plz :)
I was just wondering myself about using cut lawn grass for dyeing. Because it's one of the most staining plants when playing sports and it's so hard to wash out 🤔 same with beetroot juice, cherry juice, blackberries, tomatoes, and spinach - they all stain like hell (and all delicious)
Comically tangled! During the rinse process most of the larger pieces are removed. It helps to rinse in a large bowl of water, and gently swish the skein back and forth. Once dry, any remaining little bits are easy to brush out.
just adoreble! Thanks for sharing this! I really like both of the colours and am going to try this, too! It kind of botheres me somehow, when I just throw away the green tops of the Carrot, without knowing what I can do with them. p.s. it looks like cooking noodles with Pesto.LoL I guess I will make Pesto Pasta for dinner😁

That’s some pretty good looking green dye

That is a good idea. Keep in mind that a cloth bag or cheese cloth may also absorb some of the dye.
i was waiting for the orange dye
I wish! That would be awesome.
Miracle 🧶🙏🏻💕

Iron: ferrous sulfate. I haven't tried mowed grass! Interesting idea!

Can I also dye a thin longsleeved shirt with this tecnique or does only wool work ?:)
I have only tried wool so far. You could try a shirt if it is cotton or another natural fiber. Synthetics don’t absorb the dye. Good luck!
How do you separate the carrot bits from the yarn? It looks so impossibly entangled! What's the trick to getting them all out?

I agree! 😂 I’ve heard the greens actually make a great pesto.
I make pottery and the iron we use is actually a rust color. What kind of iron are you adding that is white?
Ferrous Sulfate
Have you tried dyeing with chlorophyll? I'd be really interested to see that.
I haven't - sounds interesting!
Can you use wild carrot? (Queen Anne's lace)
Yes I believe you can. It’s on my list of plants to try. 😊
Thank you
Could I pressure cook the yarn with this
Cotton yarn
Have you tried dying cotton?
I've only dyed wool with carrot tops so far, so I'd be curious to see how well the dye bonds with a plant fiber like cotton.
lovely! where do you buy your iron from?
botanicalcolors.com (and thank you!)
Can you provide the link for the iron that you use?
I buy it from either Dharma Trading Company or Botanical Colors.
do you know if nettle also turns green in an iron afterbath?
I haven't dyed with nettles yet, but I believe it does. I suggest to try it and see what happens!
is it colorfast or will it fade?
Great question! I did a colorfast test and the color held.
That's what I wanted to know, too! Thanks, Myra! I love both colors.
165 degrees? Is that radians or university subjects passed? How many degrees of sanity do I need keep warm as a homeless person this winter?
Hi is this good with cotton macramy
I have not tried this dye on plant fibers, such as cotton.
Why do you have to use iron?
The iron shifts the color to green. If you want a yellow dye, then you don't need iron.
ارجوك ماهي المواد الكيماوية المستعملة؟؟؟
I presume you mean farenhight / can't remember how you spell that/ not centigrade like most of the world would use ?
You are right, I live in the US so I measure temperature using Fahrenheit.
