Evaluating a 3x3 Determinant

Determinant questions are somewhat bizarre because they put a lot of students off attempting them, feeling somewhat 'alien'. However in fact they are amongst the easier of advanced maths based College Entrance Exam questions once it is understood how to evaluate a determinant (invariably a 3x3 determinant as a 2x2 determinant is far too easy and a 4x4 far too messy). Once the determinant is evaluated according to the fairly simple to remember rule, the follow up question is usually fairly standard.
In this video we first show how to evaluate a 3x3 determinant and then answer a fairly typical question to illustrate, taken from a recent JEE Main exam.
