I will never forget standing on the parade deck at MCRD San Diego after my son and his platoon were given final orders on graduation day. My son was company honor man of India Co 3rd Battalion. I watched my son and his SDI off by themselves having a conversation and it was both of their last day at MCRD San Diego. My son has moved on to a very esteemed battalion and his SDI retired from the Marines that day. One of the last letters from my son home before we saw him for family day he wrote that he was most proud of the award that he was going to receive at graduation was not for himself but for his SDI. The Marines build men and instill in them a character and swagger that will stick with them for life.
When my oldest son graduated flight school at Ft Rucker I pinned his wings on him! He had to salute me at as I was A Captain USMC.. he deployed shortly after that!
If a Marine Officer or Enlisted adhere to the 14 character traits set forth by the Corps, and exemplify these; they while have success! Loyalty, Honesty, Trust
Since these programs change from time to time, the best bet is to meet with an Office Selection Officer (OSO) at a Marine Recruiting Station. Not all stations have an OSO but they are required to refer you to one. I wish you the best.
honestly the best way to be an officer is to enlist first and then get commisioned. for three reasons. one you gain knowledge through the eyes of the enlisted which will help with leadership skills. Two you earn alot more respect from your troops who are under your command. Three you might not like the way the marine corps is.
There's a lot of Marine 2nd Lieutenants and Navy Ensigns still here in NAS Pensacola. I was hoping that I would already have a first salute coin by now.
@GscottS16 hey, being an officer in the Marine Corps. is a big commitment as well as a big responsibility. Even though you're 16, you still have a long way to go before you can become an officer. Unlike the enlisted side, where you can join once you graduate high school you must have a bachelors degree from an university. So first thing's first, go to college then talk to an OSO about becoming an officer in the Marine Corps. Good luck!
nevermind he's a mustang..im hopefully going to do the same im just starting so i got time..i believe prior enlisted Marines are the best men or women to become officers since they already may know how to survive and lead PFC Gonzalez Semper Fidelis
Respect is earned by performance. A mustang may have an advantage right after being commissioned, but good officers learn quickly. Custer was a brigadier general of volunteers at 23.
I almost want to be an officer but I think I'd rather be a Warrant Officer. To those of you who would say they respect the Master Gunnery Sergeants the most, I'd have to respectfully disagree. Warrant Officers are the absolute authority on their MOS.
@benedickjosef hey I'm 16 and I really want to be a USMC officer when I grow up. Can u give me any tips on things to do now to prepare? Also, I really want to be an infantry officer. I have heard that it is very hard to be one. What could I do to increase my chances of becoming an infantry officer? Thanks
Dude, I don't understand you and I can almost guarantee that nobody who has seen your comment understood you either. Can you google translate it? I can't even copy and paste for some reason.
A mustang is a Enlisted marine who is Promoted to Officer and There for they are part of the Mustangs ... Oorah Semper Fi I am no Marine but i Honor all Marines how fight for Freedom , Thank too all Who fight for freedom
@antifawins19 Were you fooled by a recruiter, also? Enlisted-to-officer is the least taken pathway because it is simply not just a straigth path like "making your way through the ranks." Going enlisted first, and then getting a commission to become an officer is not at all guarantee and very unlikely. I'll message you for more info.
Far from it. The first salute comes from someone the new officer respects, often a family member. The coin impresses the commission's importance on the officer. "You pay for your first salute, you EARN the rest of them."
I liked the respect of the people in the audience. the guy said excuse me sir this is my son. right away the guy says ok go.

Thanks for your comment.
May the Lord be with you and your son.
Much, much older than your son, but I graduated from
MCRD Sand Diego 3rd Battalion, Mike Co. Plt. 3050. Semper Fi! Also was Blessed with a fine unit .
You gotta just love the traditions of the US Marine Corps. Such a smart Branch of the service.
This tradition is not unique to the Marines.

@benedickjosef a Mustang is an officer who's served previous service as an enlisted Marine before being commissioned
Congratulations, brother. I hope to join you in officerhood in the near future.
"Excuse me, sir. That is my son coming out."
"Ok, GO!"
:D
Go for it! We wish you the best.
He was once enlisted
There's a lot of Marine 2nd Lieutenants and Navy Ensigns still here in NAS Pensacola. I was hoping that I would already have a first salute coin by now.
^Because you know him? LOL.
Seeing as how it's courtesy...how long have you been in so far? Lol
Was that guy a Maverick? Chest full of metals on him! Quite the honor for both!

I live near the citadel and we go there all the time
Go for it!
Best wishes for you.
that guy said "can you excuse me for a moment, my son is coming out."
XXXXXXXDDDDDDDD
that 2nd LT was enlisted to officer. he had the GCM. only enlisted Marines get the GCM.
Officers aren't enlisted, they're commissioned.
He meant the 2LT is wearing the good conduct medal which is only awarded to enlisted servicemen. The 2LT is a mustang.
Thank you.
This 2nd Lieutenant was a Mustang!! He has 5 or 6 decorations.
God bless America!!
That is exactly how he did it!
Padgett Thomas looking good as ever
I guess you said: In Russia, too, the first salute iron Ruble give. Such different countries and are the same customs
Thanks.
he must be mustang to already have so many medals
nevermind he's a mustang..im hopefully going to do the same im just starting so i got time..i believe prior enlisted Marines are the best men or women to become officers since they already may know how to survive and lead

@@markdodus6735 Thanks, truly wholesome.
@MrNinjaKiwi13 he handed off the silver dollar with the left hand.
Congratulations
No doubt about it.
They say u earn more respect if u start as enlisted then go officer, but it is much harder

@tcrock89 Ohh, thanks
The first salute is initiated ny the new butter bar, just saying.

What if I graduated college and am only now thinking about joining the military?
This may be somewhat old; but I joined the army after graduating college. I enlisted as an E-4 (Specialist). You should talk to a recruiter.
you can either get a officer commission or you get enlisted as a higher rank.
God bless Our Soldiers
@benedickjosef An officer who is formerly enlisted.
When do they issue the crayons???
@benedickjosef hey I'm 16 and I really want to be a USMC officer when I grow up. Can u give me any tips on things to do now to prepare? Also, I really want to be an infantry officer. if i go to college can i choose if i want to start as officer? because i dont
Yes, most of the military musicians are enlisted personnel with a bachelor's degree.
У нас в России тоже при первом салюте железные рубли дают. Такие разные страны и такие одинаковые обычаи.

Nice! Very nice!
@benedickjosef i just got accepted to the citadel!
The words Semper Fi,which means To Marines Everywhere, what language is that?
It's Latin. It means "always faithful".
@benedickjosef Judging by his bars, he's a mustang.
i don't support the war but I support your son. Cheers from Canada
It's was that gave you the freedom to post what you just did, stupid! And if you are in Canada, it means that you are a dumb-ass draft dodger!
@@bernardbrown5336 wtf
Ewwiwa i Marines. LOVE FROM ITALY.. Grazie...
Why did they shake both hands?
They didn't. They shook right hands, and the officer paid for the salute with his left hand.

Anyone saying you need ROTC to be a Officer is FALSE all you need is a College Degree and to pass OCS,
+Dogmeat1950 you can got to OCS, be in ROTC or go to the academy
Must be a mustang
@Reybaca No, that is the worse way to do it if you know right now that you want to be an officer.

Cool story, at last the US is now developing traditions of its own, which we in the UK have millions of them being a few thousand years older :)
At last? We've been showing the Brits how it's done since 1776 pal
congrats bro, im not there yet, please dnt be offended by my username, i dig this motto. but ill be there soon.
Sorry about that.
*JESUS CHRIST WILL FILL YOUR VOID , AMÉM.,*
Congrats, but a Marine Officer doesn't rate a Good Cookie...
Please don't let my pro, cons reflect sir
There is no such thing as Marine ROTC
Nobody thinks this is dumb?

Marines are awesome, but I hate symbolism. I think it's corny.
