  • In this video I talk about why I think the Nikon F3 and E Series 50mm lens are the best film camera and lens combination. I think this combo offers a lot of bang for your buck when it comes to features and build quality vs price.
    Of course this is just my personal opinion, and I'm always open to hear anyone else's best camera/ lens pair that you think trumps this combo.

    And although many people liek teh FM2 (that is in fact a great camera) i'd rather have that aperture priority than the 4000 speed.

    The f3 and 50mm is an awesome combo. It’s just such a beauty. I no longer have an F3 but I do have a Nikon FA with several lenses, my favorite of which is the 50 1.4. It is just an incredibly reliable camera and the matrix metering system, for me, works really well. I have a bunch of other cameras including a leica m6 but when I need to be sure that I’m going to get the shot I want, I grab the Nikon.

      Yeah the m6 is fun to use. It feels nice and looks awesome like the f3. And a bit smaller than most SLRs if you take into account that most of SLRs use larger lenses. I guess I find SLR focusing and composition more reliable than a rangefinder. Otherwise the the m6 is mechanically and electronically very reliable.

    I have used the Nikon F, F2, F3, F4, N70, N2000, and EM.
    I own and use the 50mm f/1.8 Series E manual focus lens as a backup to my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 auto focus lens. I sometimes pair it with a Nikon 75-150mm f/3.5 Series E zoom lens. When I need something wider, I add a 28mm f/2.5 Vivitar lens to make an inexpensive three-lens kit.

    May I suggest you find the missing rubberised eye piece glass, instead of running around without one being fitted. This will do at least two things, one is that your skin and/or glasses will not get scratched by the sharp edges. Two, you will help seal dust and other particles getting inside the prism inner glass area.
    While the 50mm f/1.8 E series Nikon glass is reasonable, unlike the standard 50mm f/1.8 Nikkor lens, all of the glass is not coated. There is a difference between the Nikon E series and the Nikkor version, subtle but there. I will agree that what you are suggesting is definitely good value and I do have two E series lenses.
    I would suggest that the E series 50mm is small(ish), but not a pancake lens, you want a pancake lens, look for the 50mm AI-s lens with the serial number starting with the number 2. Only sold in Japan I believe but available around the world on the internet.
    Your flash adapter is not a great one, the Nikon F3 AS-4 flash adapter is the one to have.
    You didn't mention the "T" setting, which is reasonably rare in 35mm film bodies, nor the fact you can take the prism head off and use the camera upside down with outstretched arms to take crowd shots, among other things. Use it hard for some time and explore just what it is capable of doing, I'm certain you'll appreciate it a lot more.

    • @filmismorefun
      @filmismorefun  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Allan. Thanks for the all additional info. As for the rubber eye piece, I've given up on replacing them. I've purchased multiple OEM ones for around $20 each, and they constantly fall off, so I've decided to just let it go commando. 🙂

    • @allanhugh2044
      @allanhugh2044 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@filmismorefun Interesting! I have had one F3 body for 35 years, while the other body is 33 years old, both bought new and neither of them has had issues with the eyepiece rubber falling off; or even looking like falling off. One of the bodies has had over 4,500 rolls of film through it, to say it looks second hand would be an understatement. The rubber eyepiece on that one has worn sideways, reflecting the pressure from my spectacles. Other than that, it's fine.
      If you ever get the chance, try any Nikkor lens with moving elements. In Nikon language CRC (Close Range Correction). Once you try one of those lenses, then you'll have a clearer idea of what sharpness is attainable. Sometimes the sharpness and colour rendition from these lenses can take your breath away.
      By the way, nice short review.
      If you can find one, try fitting a metal lens hood to your E series 50mm lens, I think you may find it helps quite a lot in certain circumstances by keeping stray light hitting the front element. I have one which extrudes approximately 28mm from the glass, straight sided with an overall OD of 65mm. It is a generic 52mm metal lens hood pretty much available anywhere via the net, cheap as, to boot. A metal hood has been a saviour a couple of times when my lens (mounted to the camera) has come in contact with something hard. Also keeps water off when using them in the rain.
      Speaking of rain, if you put a little screw in bullet bubble to the shutter release button, this stops water ingress into the body. It is slightly higher and not super great, but when it's raining, it is wonderful at keeping water from wet fingers pushing water into the innards. Within reason the F3 body is sort of waterproof, but not, if you know what I mean. The F3P is better in that regard.

    I'm not anywhere near an expert, but I love the fully mechanical Nikkormat FTn with a pre-AI 50mm 1.4. I will probably get some later Nikon models (like an F3) at some point, but I love this camera so I'm not in a hurry. I also love that pre-AI glass is relatively inexpensive, and I love the quirky clicky twisting you you need to do to manually index the lens on the Nikkormat 🙂
    Edit: one thing I don't love is how tricky and sometimes painful setting the iso is. I have two bodies and just keep one at 100 and one at 400 to try to avoid changing that stupid dial. Of course you could just not use the internal light meter... but I like the internal light meter.

Light, small, and the glass is 2nd to none. They were originally designed to compete with the Leica M series. The bodies are so small that I can keep both eyes open when shooting with a 50mm 1.8. Funny story. I’ve been shooting leica film M’s for about 3 years and love them. They really are great. This summer I was going on a family vacation to Cape Cod and didn’t want to bring my Ms to the beach, so I researched and grabbed an F3 with the 50mm 1.8 non E, 28 2.8 and grabbed a couple extras at an estate sale (85 1.8, 24 2.8, 135 3.5). When I picked up the F3 I was in love. It’s every bit of the camera the M series is with some extra features that I love. Lenses are not quite as good as Leicas wide open, but who cares. The action on the camera is 2nd to none and when you use it, you know you’re using a quality piece of engineering. My only gripe about it is the metering is a bit hard to see. I use this thing all the time now when I don’t feel like using a rangefinder. Will never sell it.

    • @filmismorefun

      The Leica M's look super nice, and the people I know that shoot them really love them. The only rangefinder I was partial to for a while was a Yashica electro 35. Aside from that, I've never been big into rangefinder style cameras. I agree about some of the Nikon lenses (the more consumer friendly versions) might not be the sharpest wife open, but just like you mentioned it's no big deal to me either. For me the shooting experience itself is a big part of the fun, and if I come away with a few less than pin sharp images in okay with that. It's film anyways, just chalk it up some softness to having 'soul' hahaha 😂

    Unfortunately my tripod fell over with my Nikon F5 and 16 to 35 mm, 2.8 lens. I don’t know if they’re both savable but I need to replace the ones ASAP. Do you know which pro used zoom lenses in this range will fit on a film camera? Someone said the Nikon 16-35mm VR F4 is the sharpest Nikon ultrawide lens he has ever used, next to the 16-35 2.8. Will these lenses work on 35mm Nikon cameras? Do you agree with him and which lens would you purchase?

    • @filmismorefun
      @filmismorefun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there. That's a bummer to hear about the damage. You can always send the broken lens in to Nikon and they can repair it, as an option.
      As far as the other lenses, both would work on your F5, and the decision (I would think) comes down to how you use the lenses. Do you need the shallower depth of field of the 2.8, or not? If you shoot mainly landscapes either could work. I hope that helps!

      @@filmismorefun I guess that’s what I have to do is send it to Nikon. From the research I’ve been doing I think the sharpest lens is the Nikon 17 to 35 F4. I've owned various Nikon bodies since 1962, and presently rely on an F100. That said, I agree that the F3 is a bargain and very usable. I have to wonder about its buld up here for its multiple exposure capacity, since I do not think I've ever taken one in my 62 years of photography. Likewise, his concern over the flash adapter is misplaced, as he is not using the correct adapter. The correct one fits over the rewind crack in that same two-rail holder and locks firmly into place. Frankly, the build up of the Series E lenses is silly. Of the 5 primes and 2 (3?) zooms, one of the zooms and maybe 2 of the primes are good lenses, but it also includes the worst modern lens Nikon ever made (the Series E 28mm). Why in the world would you seek out a cheap plastic body lens like the 50mm Series E when you can by the regular Nikkor 50mm 1.8, or the earlier 50mm 2.0, for maybe $20 more, both being much better optically and in terms of build quality.. The Series E is not are durable and lacks multi-coating, It's a lens based on technology which Nikon had abandoned a decade previous to its making. (Same thing for the best Series E, the 100mm 2.8. Why buy it when you can buy the exceptional 105mm 2.5 Nikkor of about the same price.)

    • @filmismorefun
      @filmismorefun  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Randall. Thanks for your opinions. It is indeed the correct flash adapter. As stated in the video I wonder if the terminals on my copy are faulty making for a poor connection.
      Myself, and many others believe the multiple exposure lever is a great feature, and use it all the time. Just because you don't particularly use it doesn't make it any less so.
      As far as the series E 50 'build up', I've mentioned why I love it in the video- It's small, light, and sharp. And has a great focus throw. Not every lens has to be built like a tank dipped in a diamond multicoating to be a useable option. No hate towards gear snobs that like to compare and argue about cameras, but that's just not my thing. I like to shoot what works for me, even if it's plastic. You know what they say.. "PLASTIC FANTASTIC!" 🙂

My only other gripe is meter display. Not a fan of the lcd. The match needle system in the FE series is much better. As to the lens, those E series 50s were nuts. Crazy sharp for such a cheap little lens. I picked up the Nikkor version of this lens just to compare, and there was absolutely no difference in optical performance as far as I could tell.
